Read More: Review: Paul Thomas Anderson's 'Inherent Vice' is a Faithful and Endearing Thomas Pynchon Adaptation If you thought Paul Thomas Anderson's "Inherent Vice" was a magnificent love letter to the sun-soaked City of Angels the way that I did, then you're going to love the short behind-the-scenes documentary, "Chryskyloden Blues," which was uploaded recently to Vimeo. Shot on Super 8 film by filmmaker Laura Colella ("Breakfast With Curtis"), "Chryskyloden Blues" blends behind-the-scenes footage with a voiceover excerpt from the Thomas Pynchon novel upon which the Anderson film is based. According to an article published on The Chicago Reader website, which is how we came across the video (so hats off to them for making such an incredible discovery), Colella was apparently supposed to appear onscreen as an amateur filmmaker shooting on Super 8 during the scene where Joaquin Phoenix's character, Doc, crashes a private party. Check out.

Seeing Hook for the first time as a child, I remember being enamored with Spielberg's vision of Never Never Land. For days and days after leaving the theater, I was fixated on the idea of living in that magical world. Memories of that experience came flooding back while watching Laura Colella's uber-charming film, Breakfast With Curtis. With a loose structure that allows you time to just enjoy yourself, Colella has captured her own Never Never Land (albeit a somewhat more adult version) that is sure to make you want to pay a visit. Set in a friendly college-towny neighborhood of Providence, R.I., the entire film takes place at a funky house known as the Purple Citadel. Subdivided into three apartments, the Purple Citadel is...

Writer-director Laura Colella's Breakfast with Curtis is a coming-of-age film that defies the trends and traps that have lately made that genre almost insufferable in American cinema.
The hero, 14-year-old Curtis (Jonah Parker), doesn't spout an endless stream of pop culture references, he's not soaked in irony, and he doesn't stand in smug superiority to his surroundings.
A skinny, bespectacled, preternaturally gifted kid who is homeschooled in response to bullying, Curtis walks with his eyes downcast, and he rarely gives more than a two- or three-word answer to any question. In him, Colella perfectly captures what it is to be the outcast who is exiled both involuntarily and by choice. When he was nine, Curtis threw a rock at a neighbor's cat, causing a rift be...

The following interview first appeared on the Filmmaker website in June 2012 to coincide with the world premiere of Breakfast with Curtis at the Los Angeles Film Festival. Laura Colella’s movie goes on theatrical release through BOND360/Abramorama from today. 25 New Faces alum Laura Colella’s Breakfast with Curtis unfolds at its own pace, not unlike the leisurely chats it spends so much time documenting. Colella, who wrote, directed, and acted in the film, used her own home as a shooting location and cast her real-life neighbors and housemates in prominent roles. Centered around a bookseller named Syd (Theo Green) who enlists […]...

Weekend Of A Champion premiered in Cannes and is presented by RatPac Entertainment’s documentary arm Rat Documentary Films, who first acquired and restored the film.
“It’s an honour and a thrill to be working with Roman Polanski, Jackie Stewart and Brett Ratner to bring Weekend Of A Champion to a Us audience,” said Dan Braun. “This is an exciting and thought provoking film that should reach beyond the base of racing and cinema fans.”

For any filmmaker, particularly if you're working on an independent movie, accolades from critics and audiences are cherished and valued, providing validation for the long hours put in to realize your vision. But it must feel extra special when a director the caliber Paul Thomas Anderson takes the time to single out your effort for praise. "I absolutely love it. You've never seen anything like it. It's a smile from beginning to end," Anderson said about Laura Colella's "Breakfast With Curtis" after discovering it last year at the L.A. Film Festival. And now, we get a chance to see what captured his attention. Today, we're exclusively unveiling the poster and trailer for "Breakfast With Curtis," a movie which not only boasts the approval of Anderson, but won the Find Your Audience Award from the 2013 Indie Spirits. Each year, the awards season comes to a close with two of the biggest ceremonies in the Us. Tonight is of course the best known, with the Academy Awards being the most prestigious handed out in the industry. But every year, the previous night is reserved for recognising the achievements in filmmaking outside of the studio system with the Independent Spirit Awards.
I’m a big fan of the Independent Spirit Awards, and look forward to their results every year. Last night, some of the finest talents across the independent industry were recognised, and Silver Linings Playbook came away on top with an impressive four category wins.
David O. Russell’s latest feature took home the Best Feature award, it won him personally the Best Director and Best Screenplay awards, and Jennifer Lawrence’s remarkable performance in it won her the Best Female Lead award.

Although there rarely seems to be much (if any) overlap between the Independent Spirit Awards and the Oscars when it comes to the winners, it's always nice to see some of these movies getting recognition when they will likely be ignored by the Academy. Silver Linings Playbook does not seem to have much of a shot at winning anything tonight (with the exception of Jennifer Lawrence for Best Actress), but it dominated the competition last night winning 4 out of the 5 categories it was nominated in including Best Picture. Jennifer Lawrence also won for Best Female Lead and David O. Russell won Best Director and Best Screenplay. Other winners included The Sessions co-stars John Hawkes for Best Male Lead and Helen Hunt for Best Supporting Female, while Matthew McConaughey won Best Supporting Male for his performance in Magic Mike. Amour took home the Best Foreign Film Award and The Invisible War won Best Documentary.

It would be the film with the juju in David O. Russell’s zany black comedy that was the toast of the 28th Independent Spirit Awards beating Beasts Of The Southern Wild – its fiercest rival in all major categories. Silver Linings Playbook cleaned up, grabbing Best Feature, Director, Screenplay and Best Actress went to Jennifer Lawrence – the heavy favorite for tomorrow’s Oscar. Fox Searchlight might have grabbed only one award for Beasts in the Cinematography category, but it’s other Sundance pick-up The Sessions managed to nab a pair of acting prizes for Helen Hunt and Oscar snubbed John Hawkes for Best Male Lead. In our favorite grant categories, Adam Leon (Gimme the Loot) nabbed the Someone to Watch Award (last year it went to Mark Jackson), the Piaget Producers Award went to Mynette Louie (she produced Tze Chun’s sophomore film Eye of Winter which we are keeping...

David O. Russell's "Silver Linings Playbook" was the big winner at the 28th annual Independent Spirit Awards held in Santa Monica, CA this afternoon and hosted by Andy Samberg. "Silver Linings" took home the Best Feature, Actress (Jennifer Lawrence), Director, and Screenplay trophies.
McConaughey, who nearly stole the show in Steven Soderbergh's "Magic Mike," won the Best Supporting Male award for a performance that was largely ignored by the Academy Awards. As Samberg astutely observed, "We've got Matthew McConaughey...Hollywood fuck you!"
Jennifer Lawrence won the Best Female Lead award for "Silver Linings Playbook," while John Hawkes took home the Best Male Lead trophy for "Sessions." His co-star, Helen Hunt, won the Best Supporting Female award.
Michael Haneke's "Amour," a darling of the 85th Academy Awards, deservingly won Best International Film.

The 2013 Spirit Awards celebration is still ongoing at this very moment, as winners are revealed. A full post with all the winners is forthcoming, but you should know that, announced just minutes ago, Ava DuVernay's Middle Of Nowhere won the John Cassavetes Award - which is given to the best feature length film with a budget of under $500,000. The film's competition included Breakfast with Curtis, Mosquita y Mari, Starlet and The Color Wheel. Today the 2013 Spirit Awards were handed out and it was a dominating effort from Silver Linings Playbook as it won Best Picture, Director (David O. Russell), Actress (Jennifer Lawrence) and Screenplay (Russell). The only award it was nominated for and didn't win was Best Actor where Bradley Cooper lost to John Hawkes for The Sessions, but that's only a minor blip on the radar when you win this big. Among the early awards handed out, Stephen Chbosky's The Perks of Being a Wallflower won for Best First Feature while Derek Connolly won for Best First Screenplay for the romantic sci-fi film Safety Not Guaranteed. Then the Twitterverse exploded with a Best Supporting Actor win for Matthew McConaughey and his work in Magic Mike, which, for a time, seemed like it may be able to eek into that last Supporting slot at the Oscars. No dice, a Spirit Award it will have to be.

Laura Colella fell in love with filmmaking while studying at Harvard under Raúl Ruiz. Since then she has directed two other narrative features, "Stay Until Tomorrow" and "Tax Day", as well as many short films. Colella is currently a professor of 16mm Film Production and Directing at the Rhode Island School of Design. Her latest film, "Breakfast With Curtis", is currently screening in the narrative competition at this year's Laff. What it's about: A troubled teen embarks on a creative venture with his neighbor, an eccentric bookseller who has delusions of gradeur fueled by red wine. On working with neighbors and friends: "The most unusual aspect of the film is that the main actors are the five residents of the 3-family house I live in, and the family of four who live next door. All but one had never acted before, and they’re amazing and fun to watch. Early...

In Laura Colella‘s lo-fi charmer, Breakfast With Curtis, young Curtis finds some unexpected friends in his hippie neighbors over the course of one summer. Of course, the exclusive clip from the film that we’ve got for you below happens to take place before those friendships come together, but it can only serve to show just how remarkable the eventual bonds truly are. Yeah, they’re not quite pals yet, but we’ll just have to see how that all hashes out. Colella’s film is a true indie film, one that was filmed in her own house and uses her own friends, neighbors, and housemates to make up most of her cast. That sort of love just has to flow into the finished product. Check out our exclusive clip and poster from Breakfast With Curtis after the break, along...
