So bad yet so good
joseph-bouchelle7 July 2013
This really is a poorly acted and executed movie. I hate to say that, but that's my take on it. But here's the thing, my young son LOVES it! It's one of his favorites. It hurts me to watch, but he would watch it over and over and over. So if you're looking for a silly, lighthearted movie that kids will like, this could be the one.

IF, however, you're looking for fine acting, great special effects, nuanced directing, a evocative script, or any other good characteristics of movies for adults, you will not find them. Sorry. But your kids might really enjoy it. It's like a bad cartoon on Saturday morning: "Do you REALLY like this?" as their giggling themselves silly on the couch.

So Incredibly Strange
abbyadams197630 December 2015
This is so strange. A "homemade" type movie. Looks like something you could make with your friends at home, assuming all your friends are little people. The plot is all OVER the place. The green screen effects are obvious. The dialogue is so weird it almost seems like it was translated from a foreign language, but it wasn't. There's a lot of background noise which drowns out the dialogue. Most of the characters act goofy, creepy or high.

The villain is hammy and wears the same greasy makeup kids wear on Halloween. Props are things like squirt pistols. I won't say it isn't entertaining, but for all the wrong reasons.

Really?
chewbaer904 January 2012
Oh my sweet lord. This movie is terrible. I like the show pit boss so I thought I would give this movie a try. I like cheesy TV shows and movies but this was below even that. The acting is terrible. THe lead role reminded me of an 8th grade play.Actually the whole movie reminded me of an 8th grade play.Last but not least. SHorty doing the voice over for Hercules was just disgusting. NOt everyone can do voice over and you do need some acting skills to do it. His vocal tone stayed the same no matter what situation. No excitement at all.It sounded like shorty was doing the voice over in the bathroom. I warn all of the people in this world. Do not watch unless your half asleep. I love Christmas movies but this is not one that I wish to share with my family.

Badly made film and poorly acted
colin-232-28834714 December 2011
I wanted to like it, but the film is poorly made. The actors don't seem to have any direction. Was there even a script? Was there a director on the set? The movie starts out being about "naughty and nice list" and then that gets dropped. Then the star Hercules is hardly ever seen. The voice for the dog is terrible. I see a lot of praise for the movie on this board but that seems to be mostly family and friends of the cast. If anyone sees the film, you will realize how bad it is. Santa was good. The girlfriend was good. But the rest are forgettable. Too bad. We need some good holiday films. But this is definitely not one. Keep away from this one! You read all the reviews on this movie but by watching the film itself, you will realize who is telling the truth.

Is this for real?
Brianpr414 December 2011
Read the other reviews so I figured I'd have my 8 year old watch it, after all, it is the holiday season. There really wasn't anything good about this flick. The dog isn't in the movie much at all, which actually turns out to be a good thing after hearing his "voice". The acting is painful to watch, especially the lead male. With low budget movies like this (I can only assume it is), you have to be creative in someway, and there was none of that. I'm not sure who these other reviewers are, but they couldn't be more wrong about the film. Don't believe me, watch it for yourself and write a review to save people from wasting their time.

Not The Worst Christmas Movie in History
chadwick287 December 2011
I think this movie went straight for the "Christmas Story" appeal. The story line was a little cheesy and the direction was clearly not very good.

Most of the acting seemed boxed and over directed (ad lib is an amazing tool). In the scenes where the actors had some freedom, you could see real potential for some great acting, between Rick Wilder (Danny Arroyo) and Max Moogle (Anthony Robinson), and between Rick Wilder and Sally (Maggie VandenBerghe), but it seems that in most scenes, they were over directed, and not given license to let themselves act.

This was not the worst Christmas movie I have ever seen, but the director should definitely go back to film school. Give Danny Arroyo, Anthony Robinson, and Maggie VandenBerghe a chance to show their talent. They should be stars....

Finally, please stop casting Mackenzie Phillips in anything. She does not have star power.

From the Bottom of My Christmas Movie List . . .
Take6027 December 2011
To my mind, this is the absolute stinker of all time, the "Plan 9 from Outer Space" of Christmas movies. Appearing on Animal Planet, you get the idea that this might not be a classic. While the treatment and script are absolutely miserable, their stinkyness is exceeded by the director, actors, and technical crew.

Plot - Hercules the pit bull has a magic collar (it glows red when Herc talks . . . sometimes). As one of Santa's minions, he is sent to an orphanage to reform a 12 y/o boy, but runs afoul of a young man seeking a job, one of the goofiest toy manufacturer in history, and a rival candidate for the job, all as the young man pursues the store receptionist. So far, not too unusual for a cable Christmas movie.

Director/Cast - Edward Hightower claims to have made three other movies, but it looks like a semester project for a second-semester film class. With a cast composed largely of dinner-theater rejects, he has nothing to work with, but even a few semi-competent actors, Kathy Garver and Mackenzie Phillips, their performances are either stilted or horribly uneven. I'll blame the director. Danny Arroyo as the romantic lead delivers a performance worthy of Ed Wood's dentist. I think he was actually upstaged by the performance of the dog. At least Herc's voice was looped in, leaving the other actors with no excuse. Anthony Robinson has to be somebody's relative, recruited off the stage of his local middle school. He shows flashes of talent, but no consistency. At least Arroyo was consistently bad.

Technical - Here's where the movie achieves true "Plan 9" status. Lighting is sufficient to see, but that's it. Shadows fall all over the set, a couple of green screen sequences are so poorly lit that the chromakeyer can't make much out of the effect, so it looks ragged. Note that these same sequences appear to be lit in blue because the clipping isn't responding to the green screen - making everyone look like they're freezing to death. Cutting seems to have been done measured by the foot - almost totally random.

Audio was incredibly poor, boomy and off mike in interior scenes, shot obviously in real locations rather than on a sound stage. Exteriors were not filtered for background noise, so the actors' lines were buried in street noises and incessant carols broadcast from a storefront. With only a handful of setups, it's obvious this project was shot on a shoestring, but low budget doesn't have to mean such miserable quality is acceptable. Apparently there was no budget for post-production, so special effects approximated those of a fifties Japanese monster movie.

I actually have to give "Hercules Saves Christmas" a very guarded recommendation. If you want to see ugly, this is your Christmas movie. It has a truly miserable script with a barely discernible plot, a director who's only other credits must include a kid's birthday party, and a cast slightly more wooden than that of "Team America", and a tech crew that probably had a week's experience on a student project somewhere.

My wife and I decided to erase the DDR about three minutes in, but we stayed until the credit roll because it was like watching an hour and a half train wreck. You couldn't avert your eyes, it was that bad. A similar movie, "The Search for Santa Paws" (Disney) was far superior, if you can take one of the sub-plots lifted directly from "Annie".

fun cute movie
kate-638 December 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This is a fun, cute and heartfelt movie. Watching it is a great way to escape stress and lose yourself in a delightful Christmas film. Fans of Shorty Rossi will especially like Hercules, the friendly pit bull, as Shorty provides the voice. Finding classic favorites, Kathy Garver, Mackenzie Phillips and Marc McClure in this movie was a hoot. George Maguire as Santa was one of the most believable Santas I have seen. They all did a great job. It seems there is a lot of movie here for not a great deal of money. I look forward to any sequels as it seems the story could go on! Do yourself and your family a favor and check out this sugarplum treat! It's worth it.

Cute Christmas Movie
fastforwardcoaching13 December 2011
I enjoyed watching this movie with my 5 year old, and he just loved it. I was a great feel good Christmas movie and we really did enjoy it, especially liked seeing Mackenzie Phillips as the role of Helen Dunn and really enjoyed seeing Danny Arroyo who played Rick, these seemed to be the two characters that really seemed to stand out for me thought the production. It is something that is a must watch if you have children, the message in the story is very heartfelt and meaningful for the spirit of Christmas. As far as animal Christmas movie's go and we know how many there are during this time of year, I would safely recommend this one for sure, you will not be disappointed.

Please read these reviews with a bit of skepticism..
mailroom-286-4712218 February 2012
It obvious that anyone over the age of twelve who posts a bad review about a fairy-tale story made for children is probably a failed critic with an ax to grind who struggling with a poor adult self image. Hercules Saves Christmas is a movie about A TALKING DOG FOR Christ SAKE!! Did any one of these sourpuss reviewers actually read the synopsis? Did you really think this movie was going to be an Oscar level art piece targeted to an adult audience? One reviewer actually writes about the technical flaws in the movie. This is clearly an act of self-gratification on the part of a frustrated wannabe movie critic. Message to Take60: get over yourself. Your extensive knowledge of green screen effects and audio levels is not important to us. You are not qualified to make this judgment in my opinion. Qualified reviewers of the appropriate age (3 -7) watched this movie in my household and they loved it. In a world of rational-thinking adults - a child's opinion about movies made for children is the only thing that matters.

Amusing, you'll find yourself laughing with AND at it
christophercurtiskelley11 November 2012
It's a pretty harmless flick. I went into it expecting it to make me kind of sad (at how bad it might be), but there's a smattering of originality in the writing and enough excitement from the actors to lend it a sort of magic that makes it too fun to hate.

Sure, it's awkward, has a few scenes that linger too long, and generally doesn't make sense, but it's better than your general Hallmark tripe. It has plenty of dad-style jokes to make you yuk-yuk-yuk in spite of yourself, and it has cute visuals. I think my 5-year-old niece will like it.

I recommend it to anyone who can lighten up, anyone who likes weed, anyone who likes to riff, and anyone with chill kids who love dogs and Christmas.

Entertaining family film
ltmn7 December 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Hercules Saves Christmas is a charming family film. I saw it on the cable channel Animal Planet. The Hercules in the title isn't the Greek god, but is instead a talking dog. Hercules teams with Max, a twelve year old boy who wants to make Santa's "nice" list. Toward that end, Max and Hercules are assigned to help a bitter man named Rick Wilder find the spirit of the season. Danny Arroyo shines in the role of Rick Wilder, deftly balancing the dramatic and comedic sides of the character. Arroyo is joined by an engaging ensemble of actors that includes Mackenzie Phillips and Marc McClure. Max is portrayed by endearing newcomer Anthony Robinson. Hercules is voiced by Shorty Rossi, who also served as a producer on the project. This film is a gem. Kudos to the cast and crew for bringing such heart and humor to what is certain to be a holiday favorite.

A fun, family Christmas movie!
tklewhite12 December 2011
My entire family had a blast watching this film. It was filled with Christmas spirit and good humor. My kids laughed so hard at a few parts that they made us rewind (we DVR'd it)so they could watch them again. Always a good sign for the kids. The actors were charming, especially Wick Rilder ;-)played by Danny Arroyo who we were rooting for the entire film and George Maguire who played a very lovable Santa. It was also fun to see Mackenzie Phillips again and I could tell that she enjoyed her evil villain role.

We will add this to our list of holiday films that we make sure to watch each year!

Excellent Film for the Holiday Season
JoeTJr12 December 2011
I'm glad to know that Holiday films like this are still being made. I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Yes, it's out of my demographic but it's a great family film for this Holiday Season. Danny Arroyo and Anthony Robinson gave great performances and had great chemistry on the screen. It was also good to see Mackenzie Phillips on the screen again...especially playing such a funny role. And I haven't seen Kathy Garver since Family Affair!I hope to see more of her in the future. All the rest of actors were fantastic as well especially the elves. George Maguire played an excellent Santa. And what can we say about a dog named Hercules. Having a lovable dog in any film is always a nice touch. This film should have been available in the Theaters so the public could have a chance to embrace it. Well done everybody.

Delightful Movie
chrismarroyo7 December 2011
Hercules Saves Christmas is a great family movie. It's a modern day version of Scrooge. All the characters were great. The actor who portrayed Rick Wilder was outstanding. Handsome as well I might add. Was nice to see a young man play the role of Scrooge as opposed to an older man. Hope to see him in more movies in the near future. Hercules also did an outstanding role as well as the rest of the characters. Good Family and Christmas Movie!! Highly Recommended. All the characters performed well. Great movie for the young kids to watch. Teaches a lesson of love, giving and sharing. Would watch it again if it's repeated.

Hercules Rocks!
sixandstones7 December 2011
Great family holiday film! Kids will love it. Unfortunately there are always a few deadbeats who love to trash films and everyone associated with them but pay them no mind. They obviously have to much time on their sad hands. Trashing children's films? Ba- Humbug! The actors all did a great job and Mackenzie Phillips, Marc McClure and Richard VanVleet are really funny. George McGuire plays a fantastic and warm hearted Santa. Anthony Robinson as the orphan Max Moogle was terrific and Danny Arroyo gives a great performance. Delivers a nice positive message for the kids and Hercules is a very lovable dog. But perhaps not for those nasty few who root for Scrooge in the movies! Give it a try for more then ten minutes - you won't be disappointed.

A Fun Xmas Kids Film Great For the Entire Family
rbylakx7 December 2011
Hercules Saves Christmas is a fun Xmas kids film great for the entire family. The film had humor and holiday spirit. There were good characters I cared about and good acting all around. Rick, Sally, and Helen stood out.

Top it off with cute talking animals, magic elves, and some good holiday music.

My family enjoyed it. It held good moral values. My kids and nephews wanted to see it again the next day. They connected with the Max character and they loved Hercules. What more can one ask for in a Christmas film?

Recommend!!!
