Much like the master illusionist on which the feature film is based, Lionsgate’s Harry Houdini movie has been a difficult butterfly to pin. Through time, we’ve seen the likes of Johnny Depp and director Dean Parisot come attached to the project, only for plans to unravel before any tangible progress could be made.
But the show must go on, with Deadline reporting that Dan Trachtenberg has entered talks to helm the Houdini pic, one to be based on The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America’s First Superhero by William Kalush and Larry Sloman. Little is known about the embryonic feature, only that it holds a script from Noah Oppenheim and will seemingly shed new light on the elusive Harry Houdini, who was described as “not just the master of magic, but as an adventurer and investigator of the occult.” Frank Marshall and Bruce Cohen (American Beauty) will produce.

Producer Jj Abrams says there'll be an announcement on the movie adaptations of Half-Life and Portal "very soon"...
It's already three years since Valve announced that it was collaborating with producer Jj Abrams on Portal and Half-Life - movie adaptations of the studio's hit videogames. And while we haven't heard much about those projects since, Abrams has said that they're both "very much in development."
In a brief chat with IGN, Abrams added that a meeting with Valve is imminent and, more excitingly, he's "hopeing that there will be a Portal announcement fairly soon."
Abrams had little else to say about the Portal movie other than that he's been having "some really interesting discussions with writers," but we'd be surprised if Abrams doesn't already have a director in mind. First-time director Dan Trachtenberg scored a surprise hit earlier this year with the thriller spin-off 10 Cloverfield Lane, which...

Batman V Superman, Scott Pilgrim, Hardcore Henry and more show the growing influence of videogames on film....
This article contains very mild spoilers for Hardcore Henry, Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice and 10 Cloverfield Lane.
For a while now, 'it's like watching somebody else play a video game' has been a nifty shorthand for film critics. Even though the popularity of playthrough videos, from YouTube to dedicated networks like Twitch, means that a lot of us might now be watching other people play the video games, we understand the implication whether we agree with it or not.
It's the same reason why there has arguably never been a great movie based directly on a video game, as these tend to transplant story and character elements into a big screen medium at the expense of the personal player experience, whereby you can actually inhabit and control a character.

J.J. Abrams is a creator presiding over many projects. Late last year, the director was able to juggle Star Wars: The Force Awakens and producing duties on this month’s claustrophobic thriller, 10 Cloverfield Lane. But when it comes to the dormant Portal and Half-Life films, don’t expect either project to emerge out of left-field bearing its own trailer in the vein of Dan Trachtenberg’s directorial debut.
Speaking in an interview with IGN, Abrams offered a brief status report on each video game adaptation, revealing that both projects are still very much in the early stages.
“Not yet, but they’re in development,” he said. “We’ve got writers, and we’re working on both those stories, but nothing that would be an exciting update.”
First announced all the way back at Dice 2013, there’s been nary a mention of potential directors or casting news for either Portal or Half-Life.

"It's a real potboiler that is boiling and boiling and boiling and erupts in a way that few films ever do," director Dan Trachtenberg, 34, exclaimed over his first full-length feature, 10 Cloverfield Lane. Well, it's certainly hard to argue with him.
From the opening Psycho-fueled moments to the allusions to Notorious to the surprising twist of a finale, it's hard to recall a recent film that made squirming in one's seat such a pleasurable pastime. Produced with a sure hand by J.J. Abrams, with a relentlessly unnerving score by Bear McCreary, razor-sharp editing by Stefan Grube, and wry plotting by Josh Campbell and Matthew Stuecken, there is a reason the audience at the screening I attended spilled its popcorn every which way. These folks were freaking out but without having to be exposed to the full panoply of gore and excessive physical violence that most horror films apply with a trowel.

10 Cloverfield Lane is the directorial debut of Dan Trachtenberg, who you may remember directed a short film called Portal: No Escape that went viral a few years ago. Along with directing a few shorts and commercials, Dan was also one of the co-hosts of The Totally Rad Show, a popular video show that ran for years on Revision3. The Portal short got a lot of recognition and allowed him the edge he needed to make his feature directorial debut with J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot Productions, and he knocked it out of the park with this movie.

Brimming with edge-of-your-seat suspense, 10 Cloverfield Lane is a wonderfully effective throwback to classic nail-biters and a terrific expansion of the Cloverfield cinematic universe.
The film opens with a woman named Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) walking out on her boyfriend (the voice of Bradley Cooper) after a fight. As she drives away down an isolated country road, she hears a radio broadcast about mysterious blackouts across the southern coast of the United States and Wham — her car is blindsided, and the movie intercuts its title card with chaotic footage of her accident in progress. Michelle wakes up in an underground bunker, where an intimidatingly large man named Howard (John Goodman) explains that he brought her there to save her life. He claims there’s been a mysterious attack on the surface that contaminated the air and killed everyone outside, meaning that the current occupants of the bunker — he, Michelle, and a...

Something is coming to Cloverfield.
Slashfilm published the IMAX poster for 10 Cloverfield Lane, which was created by UK artist Kevin M. Wilson or better known as Ape Meets Girl.
The movie stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman and John Gallagher Jr. and directed by Dan Trachtenberg (“Portal: No Escape”).
The poster certainly captures the desperation of being a prisoner while something is lurking outside. Wilson mentioned to Slashfilm that there are a few Easter eggs hidden in the poster.
The movie will be in theaters next week on March 10.
Check out the poster below.

I'm really looking forward to 10 Cloverfield Lane, Bad Robot's upcoming Cloverfield sequel (that reportedly won't feature the same monster that terrorized NYC in the first movie). I have my expectations in check as to what kind of movie it will be — which seems very important for this particular film — but even if it's just a contained thriller without many noticeable connections to the original at all, I'm curious to watch the feature directorial debut of Dan Trachtenberg (former co-host of The Totally Rad Show and director of Portal: No Escape) and see what he does with that great cast (Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman, and John Gallagher Jr).
In the meantime, /Film has debuted the poster at the top of this page, which is by artist Ape Meet Girl (real name: Kevin M. Wilson) that was created at the behest of IMAX and producer J.J. Abrams. I love the...

The ever-prolific J.J. Abrams has seemingly not rested on his laurels post-Star Wars, producing a sequel (or is it part of a bigger “Cloverfield Anthology”? – noone knows) to his found-footage hit Cloverfield – entitled 10 Cloverfield Lane.
This “sequel” (which looks to be taking place at the same time as the first film) is helmed by Dan Trachtenberg, who many will know as one of the hosts of the much-missed web series The Totally Rad Show and director of the short film Portal: No Escape. Whilst little is known about the film beyond the few trailers/TV spots we’ve seen, what we do know is that 10 Cloverfield Lane – which stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman and John Gallagher Jr. – will be release in the UK on April 8th.

"I saved your life by bringing you here." Paramount has debuted a new 30-second TV spot during the Super Bowl for Bad Robot's sneaky little sci-fi film 10 Cloverfield Lane, directed by Dan Trachtenberg, of the short Portal: No Escape (follow him on Twitter at @DannyTRS). Mary Elizabeth Winstead stars as a woman who wakes up in an underground bunker after a car accident, but doesn't know what's out there or why she's stuck there. She's joined by John Goodman and John Gallagher Jr., and most of the film takes place in the bunker with these three. The final shot in this TV spot is quite a doozy - either that's a huge reveal from the third act or just a big tease, but I'm not sure what they're showing. Don't miss this one. Here's the new Super Bowl TV spot for Dan Trachtenberg's 10 Cloverfield Lane, from Para's YouTube:...

I've been a big fan of Mary Elizabeth Winstead for years, but I was as shocked as anyone to find out that her new "trapped in a basement" movie Valencia (sometimes called The Cellar) is actually going to be released as 10 Cloverfield Lane, a surprise title change from J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot Productions. It remains to be seen exactly how the two movies will connect (is the monster from the first movie outside? Did John Goodman's character know about the New York attack before anyone else?), but you should definitely watch the trailer if you haven't already.
In a new interview, Winstead (who stars with Goodman and John Gallagher Jr.) spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the secrecy behind the new movie:
“There is this veil of secrecy to it from the very beginning. We were making this movie in this little bubble where nobody else knew what...

It's billed as a sequel to Cloverfield, but is 10 Cloverfield Lane all it seems? We take a look at the subject of unrelated sequels...
In an era where it's just about impossible to make a high-profile movie without at least something leaking onto the web, producer Jj Abrams seems to have pulled off the ultimate coup in recent months: he and his company Bad Robot have secretly created a follow-up, of sorts, to the 2008 hit monster movie, Cloverfield.
On the 15th January, a trailer landed for 10 Cloverfield Lane, a claustrophobic horror thriller that Abrams described in a statement to Collider as a "blood relative" of that earlier film directed by Matt Reeves.
The premise is this: Mary Elizabeth Winstead's character, Michelle, is injured in a car accident and wakes up in a bunker with 40-something survivalist, Howard (John Goodman).

Last night, something magical happened to Cloverfield fans – a trailer starring John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and John Gallagher Jr. played before Michael Bay’s 13 Hours, and at the end, the title Cloverfield turned into something more: 10 Cloverfield Lane. I Know, Right?!
It’s no secret that J.J. Abrams has wanted to re-visit Cloverfield through a sequel of some sort, but after early talks, plans seemed to dissipate, J.J. became a Star Wars hero, and Clover seemed to be put on the backburner. Or, maybe that’s just what J.J. wanted us to believe…

Following in the wake of the brilliant first trailer for "10 Cloverfield Lane," the 'blood relative' to 2008's "Cloverfield," the first poster has debuted ahead of its March 11th release.
How much the film ties back to the original is still a big mystery at this point, with the connection likely to be small at best. A source for Hitfix says they attended a test screening back when the film was called "Valencia" and says it ain't a direct sequel: "If it's 'Valencia' with a new title, then it's not Cloverfield 2. Saw a preview a few months ago, and it's big twisty fun... 'Valencia' is smaller in scale and a play on Misery. At least for the first half. Heh."

Cast your memory back to 2007 when a mysterious trailer appeared in front of Transformers from Jj Abrams’ production company Bad Robot. There was no hype, no fanfare, not even a title. All we had to go on was some grainy found footage of New York being destroyed and a date, 1.18.08. Of course, that movie turned out to be Cloverfield, and in the years following the movies release, fans have been clamouring for a sequel. And, maybe, just maybe, they now have it. In true Bad Robot fashion, a screening of 13 Hours: Secret Soldiers of the Benghazi (another Michael Bay movie) had a trailer for Dan Trachtenberg’s (the man responsible for the awesome Portal: No Escape short film) debut feature, a thriller starring Mary Elisabeth Winston and John Goodman about a young woman trapped in a bunker by a man who tells her the world outside has been destroyed. Dropping just hours after the project was announced, the teaser trailer has arrived for the J.J. Abrams-produced "10 Cloverfield Lane," something of a spin-off or sister film to the 2008 creature feature "Cloverfield". Like that film, the campaign here is playing up the mystery angle and that starts with this trailer which is executed brilliantly and is certainly the first great trailer of 2016 so far.
Starting out as what looks like a father and his two adult children trying to kill time together at home, the situation grows increasingly stranger and darker as the backing music of the original version of "I Think We're Alone Now" decelerates and the level of dread increases. Dan Trachtenberg ("Portal: No Escape") helms the film which stars John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Gallagher, Jr. and is slated to open March 11th.

The long rumored follow-up to the J.J. Abrams-produced 2008 monster movie "Cloverfield" appears to not only be on the way - its actually already completed.
Two years ago Dan Trachtenberg, the filmmaker behind the acclaimed video game inspired short fan film "Portal: No Escape," was hired to helm a post-apocalyptic thriller dubbed "Valencia" (aka. "The Cellar") at Bad Robot and Paramount Insurge. The film was shot with the likes of John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and John Gallagher, Jr. involved.
At last report it was in the can but not scheduled and nothing had really been heard about it since. That changed today though when an early screening of Michael Bay's Benghazi film "13 Hours" in the United States included with it a teaser trailer for "10 Cloverfield Lane". Collider reached out to Paramount and scored a statement from J.J. Abrams himself:
"The idea came up a long time ago during production.

Back in January of 2013, we learned that Dan Trachtenberg, one of the hosts of Totally Rad Show and director of the awesome short film Portal: No Escape, had taken over the long-gestating adaptation of the comic book Y: The Last Man. Dan Trachtenberg - who was attached to direct the project - revealed the news on Twitter.
Vaughan had previously said that he believed the rights may revert to him and Guerra.
The comic centred around a mysterious event that kills all male mammals on the planet.

Despite having the rights to the property for a decade and a director in place for over a year, New Line has truly struggled with getting an adaptation of the cult Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra comic book Y: The Last Man off the ground. Back in January, we learned that the studio was at risk of losing the rights to the creators if cameras didn’t start rolling quickly… and now the gauntlet has finally fallen. The Y: The Last Man film is officially dead in the water.
Director Dan Trachtenberg (Portal: No Escape) broke the sad news himself when asked directly by a fan about the project’s progress. His statement was very brief and matter-of-fact, but absolutely clear:

Way back in 2011, fledgling director Dan Trachtenberg’s first short, Portal: No Escape, became a viral sensation – and captured Hollywood’s attention. It wasn’t long before Universal and writer-producer Chris Morgan snapped up his next pitch, entitled Crime Of The Century. Hard at work developing the feature with writer Daniel Kunka (12 Rounds), Trachtenberg also took on his directorial debut project, Valencia, for Bad Robot. Whether or not this has slowed progress on Crime, it’s unknown. But Universal have hired Gary Dauberman to come aboard.

We have a look at some of the more obscure comic book movie ideas which nearly made it to the big screen…
We've recently been investigating the pile of nearly-made-its in the ever-growing world of cinematic comic book adaptations. You could be forgiven for thinking Hollywood will strap wads of cash to any old comic book writer who stumbles past their door, but so far we’ve written approximately 5,000 words that say otherwise.
First, we delved into DC’s chequered past and found heaps of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman projects that we’ll sadly never get to see (and some other projects we’re quite glad we’ll never have to sit through). We then did the same for Marvel, unearthing plans for a Paul McCartney Silver Surfer rock opera, James Cameron’s bizarre Spider-Man script ideas and an amazingly-cast Dazzler animation from the 1980s.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead has been cast in The Cellar.
She will star opposite John Goodman in Dan Trachtenberg's microbudget thriller, reports Variety.
Trachtenberg is best known as the director of short fan film Portal: No Escape.
Formerly titled Valencia, the film centres around a woman who wakes up after a car accident to find herself in a cellar with a man who claims the world has been devastated by a nuclear attack.
Trachtenberg was linked last year to the long-gestating adaptation of Brian K Vaughan and Pia Guerra's acclaimed comic Y: The Last Man.
Winstead will next be seen with Jeremy Renner in Kill the Messenger.

This sounds just about perfect. We've been following the development of filmmaking Dan Trachtenberg ever since his short Portal: No Escape blew up online a few years back. He's been attached to Y: The Last Man and a few other projects, but is now focused on developing a movie called Valencia, a secret micro-budget sci-fi story in development at Bad Robot set mostly in an underground cellar of sorts. Variety is now reporting that Trachtenberg has cast Mary Elizabeth Winstead to star in the film, which will also feature John Goodman (what - awesome?!) in the cast. I'm so glad this project is starting to actually come together. So what is Valencia about? From a script by Josh Campbell and Matthew Stuecken, revised by Dan Casey: "The majority of the movie takes place in an underground cellar, and revolves around a young woman who wakes up in the cellar...

Mary Elizabeth Winstead is set to star in The Cellar, the Jj Abrams-produced pic from Bad Robot and Paramount Insurge about woman who wakes up underground after a terrible car accident and fears she’s been abducted. Her captor, a doomsday prepper, warns her that a terrible chemical attack has left the outside world uninhabitable but as tensions rise she decides she must escape regardless of the terrors that await outside. Dan Trachtenberg (Portal: No Escape) is helming from a script titled Valencia by Josh Campbell and Matthew Stuecken that was rewritten by Dan Casey. John Goodman was also tapped to star last month. Abrams, Jon Cohen, and Lindsey Weber are producers. Winstead next appears in The Returned and Kill The Messenger. She’s repped by Wme, Anonymous Content, and Jackoway Tyerman.

John Goodman is in talks to star in upcoming thriller Valencia.
Dan Trachtenberg will direct the film, produced by Bad Robot and Insurge Pictures, a division of Paramount which distributes "micro-budget" projects.
The film is said to take place mostly in an underground cellar, following a young girl who loses consciousness in a car accident.
The girl - who is yet to be cast - awakes in the cellar with a mysterious man (Goodman), who tells her that the world has been devastated by a nuclear attack.
Goodman, perhaps best known for his roles in Roseanne and Argo, has worked with Paramount in the past, most recently voicing a Transformer in Transformers: Age of Extinction.
Trachtenberg, who directed the short fan film Portal: No Escape, was named last year as the director of New Line's planned adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra's acclaimed comic book series Y: The Last Man.

Back in April we told you that Dan Trachtenberg landed a pretty great gig after his short film Portal: No Escape got a lot of attention (watch it below). Here's a thriller that could swing in any genre direction, but we're going to officially put it on our radar. It sounds like it has a Twilight Zone-esque vibe. Has Hollywood found the next Neill Blomkamp? Like the South African director, whose short Alive In Joburg caught the eye back in 2006, Dan Trachtenberg made a big splash with Portal: No Escape, a short based on the dimensionally-abstract computer game. Now he’s getting a shot at a feature length project. It’s called Valencia and it’ll be the work of J. J. Abrams’ Bad Robot marque for Paramount’s indie(st) arm, Insurge. With a modest $5m budget, Trachtenberg will tackle a scenario in which a teenage girl awakes in a cellar after a car crash to discover from a strange caretaker that society has been devastated by nuclear attack. We’re assuming it’s a psychological thriller that will tackle some of the same themes of captivity and escape as that Portal short. The script is the work of Dan Casey, who reshaped an earlier draft by Josh Campbell and Matt Stuecken.

Now here's a project to keep an eye on. We've been watching closely and waiting for commercials director Dan Trachtenberg to make his feature debut ever since breaking out with that Portal: No Escape short. This might finally be the one. The Wrap is reporting that Bad Robot is producing a project for Paramount's low-budget label Insurge Pictures, a film titled Valencia, or at least called that (which might refer to the area this takes place in, among other things). Valencia has been greenlit for production and Trachtenberg will direct a script by Dan Casey, who rewrote an earlier draft by Josh Campbell & Matt Stuecken. Read on. While we always expect an air of mystery to every Bad Robot project, this one does indeed have a synopsis. Or at least part of a plot. The Wrap's description for Valenica explains that it's an end-of-the-world thriller: "The majority of the movie...

From "Portal: No Escape" to "Croft," there's been some impressively produced fan films based on video game titles in recent years. Add another to the list with Moe Charif's new twelve-minute short based on Eidos' well regard reboot of the series "Deus Ex: Human Revolution" which was released in 2011.
A proper feature based on the game has been in development for some time, co-written by "Siniser" scribes C. Robert Cargill and Scott Derrickson, but there's been little word on it since comments from Cargill at Comic Con last year.

It’s truly baffling to think that in an age dominated by comic book adaptations, Y: The Last Man has been stagnantly gestating in the hands of New Line Cinema – even with a director attached. It was over a year ago that I reported Dan Trachtenberg, creator of the brilliant short film Portal: No Escape, had signed on to helm this ambitious endeavor, but since then, there hasn’t been a single peep from New Line. No story, no cast, no production date – it’s like the film froze last January and still hasn’t been thawed.

"Man of Steel" scribe David Goyer says the long-gestating film adaptation of the acclaimed "Y: The Last Man" comic book series could begin shooting next year.
The comic follows young amateur escape artist Yorick Brown and his pet monkey Ampersand, the last two men on Earth. Something simultaneously kills every mammal on Earth possessing a Y chromosome - including embryos, fertilized eggs, and even sperm.
Society is plunged into chaos as infrastructures collapse and the surviving women everywhere try to cope with the loss of the men. Yorick goes on a mission to find his girlfriend Beth, who was on vacation in Australia.
Earlier this year filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg, who helmed the fan film short "Portal: No Escape," was brought onboard to direct the project from a new script draft by Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia. Goyer, who is producing the project, tells Crave Online:

According to Deadline Hollywood, New Line has chosen internet sensation Dan Trachtenberg to direct the long-gestating adaptation of “Y: The Last Man.” It comes as a huge surprise because of how much sense it makes. There was a way for the production company to play it safe (especially considering D.J. In the interest of full disclosure, I know Trachtenberg personally, but his talent speaks for itself. He rose to prominence on the Totally Rad Show and then made a name as a director with the short film Portal: No Escape.
