Good Interview with the Rocker Turned Director

Post Mortem with Mick Garris: Rob Zombie (2011)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

Terrific interview/discussion with genre director Rob Zombie has the filmmaker explaining what made him want to get into movies and then we go directly into the making of HOUSE OF A 1,000 CORPSES. It's obvious that Zombie could talk about this film for hours but he admits that he feels it's a very bad movie and that he really didn't know how to handle much of what was going on in it. He later talks about the various troubles he had with the press screening at Universal, his comments that got him kicked out of MGM and then how even Lionsgate turned the picture down before reconsidering. He then talks about THE DEVIL'S REJECTS and why he felt this was the real movie that he was always wanting to make. Then it came time to discuss HALLOWEEN and its sequel. Zombie mentions that originally he wanted the first film to just be about Michael's early years but the studio said no. Zombie apparently wanted to film both parts back to back but the studio wouldn't go for this so this is why the movie feels as if you're watching two films. The first being the new stuff and the second being the remake. Zombie talks about his lack of desire to do the sequel and what brought him back. Zombie certainly has a lot of great stories to tell and he is very fun to listen to. He also likes throwing out the "F" word as much as the characters in his movies but it's still a lot of fun. Hearing him talk about all the critics of remakes was pretty interesting and especially when Garris jumps in because he too remade a beloved classic (THE SHINING).
