What a way to end the New York City Horror Film festival, terrified and giddier than a 12-year-old school girl going to a One Direction concert. Seriously, Devoured completely floored me in almost every cinematic sense, and was a true stand out when compared to other festival feature presentations. Director Greg Olliver and writer Marc Landau shook the stigma that comes along with independent horror filmmaking, being looked at as a genre which either shoots for nothing but absurdity (ThanksKilling 3) or becomes a low-budget copy-cat of recent trends. Olliver’s film is neither of those characterizations, standing along as a strong paranormal tale and brilliant character driven thriller. Who says horror is a dying genre?

Well, this one certainly is a surprise. Prior to last week, Devoured was unknown to your humble reviewer. Hopefully it manages to find an audience, because for (what appears to be) next to nothing, it overcomes a very deliberate pace and establishes an odd, hard-to-define tension along with some effective jolts.
It also boasts an excellent lead performance. Lourdes (Marta Milans) is a young woman from El Salvador struggling to make money in New York City.

Stars: Marta Milans, Kara Jackson, Bruno Gunn, Tyler Hollinger, Sal Rendino, David Conley, Luis Harris | Written by Marc Landau | Directed by Greg Olliver
I’d heard of Greg Olliver, the director of Devoured through his work on the documentary Lemmy back in 2010, so was interested in what this, a horror film, would be like.
First off, the film has an immediate atmosphere to it, which put me in a good mood immediately. A feeling of ominous uncertainty from the get-go is always a welcome thing to run into when beginning to watch something you know little about prior to seeing it. Some might say that this is a slow moving film, but a slow build of tension is what is needed and I feel like it works really well here. It spends time with characters and allows us to see into their lives and their psyche.

An intense, troubling film boasting a spectacular lead performance from Marta Milans, Devoured (2012) calls to mind such bleak and visceral late-seventies New York urban dramas as Scorsese's Taxi Driver and The Driller Killer in its expert depiction of alienation and escalating horror. To celebrate the DVD and Blu-ray release of the new film from Lemmy director Greg Olliver this coming Monday (16 September), we have Three DVD copies of this gripping psychological horror to give away, courtesy of UK distributors Matchbox Films. Plein Soleil
Film
Plein Soleil was the first adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s The Talented Mr Ripley, and Alain Delon’s star-making turn as the beautiful and charming villain Tom Ripley is arguably the best of the four on screen portrayals of the amoral social climber.
Ripley is sent to Italy to persuade the playboy son of an American millionaire to return home to San Francisco, but when it becomes apparent that Phillipe has no intention of going home so that Ripley can collect his fee, Ripley decides that actually becoming Phillipe, and gaining control of his considerable assets, is a much better prospect. Gradually ingratiating himself with the playboy and his fiancé Marge (although she is annoyed with their boyish camaraderie and is dubious about Ripley), Ripley painstakingly constructs his imitation of Phillipe while quietly engineering the opportunity to make him disappear, the final step...

★★☆☆☆ Devoured (2012), the new horror from Lemmy director Greg Olliver, has commendable aspirations of being a shocking and twisted original. However, whilst it may be bizarre, this strange outing - an official selection of Grimmfest 2012 - ultimately disappoints due to its soullessness and an underlying sense of confusion. Lourdes (Marta Milans) is a Spanish-speaking immigrant who works as a kitchen assistant in a New York restaurant. The little money Lourdes earns is sent abroad to her aging mother and sickly son, whilst she's overcome by the hopelessness of her situation and the unpleasantness of her boss.
Haunted by the frequent manifestations of a strange and unexplained apparition, Lourdes finds her increasingly fragile mental state pushed to breaking point with devastating results. The marketing behind Devoured have tried to sell it as a modern horror which harkens back to grimy 1970's New York-based psychological shockers such as Taxi Driver (1976) and The Driller Killer...

From my experience, horror films are always the most interesting but least attended films at smaller film festivals as festival audiences seem to be more interested in stories about losing your virginity than werewolves and zombies. However, two venues in Telluride, Colorado hope to serve that small group of dedicated art-house horror fans with three days of horror films from around the world at the 3rd annual Telluride Horror Show.
Below is the list of films scheduled to screen at the Telluride Horror Show, which takes place on October 12, 13, and 14, 2012.

Following up his co-directing gig on last year's acclaimed rock documentary Lemmy, Greg Oliver is in post-production on his first solo feature film, a psychological horror film entitled Devoured. The first trailer for Devoured has been released, which you can check out here below.
The film stars Marta Milans as a single mother struggling to make ends meet by getting a job washing dishes in a restaurant where nothing is what it seems (or so the trailer would have us believe). She starts having unnerving visions, intense encounters, and it all builds to a "brilliant, shocking ending" (in the words of the trailer). It's a pretty basic horror trailer made solely to get early word out about the movie and it will likely come in handy when it's time to sell the movie to the general public.
