Vikingland Director Xurxo Chirro's Vikingland is a notable part of a trend for documentary fiction in the recent cinema originating from Galicia (north west Spain). The film uses found-footage of a specific case of Galician emigration in the early 1990s and arranges it around the structure of Moby Dick - it is screening in Edinburgh as part of the 'Focus on Galicia' strand at the 2nd edition of Iberodocs. We spoke to Chirro about how the film came to be, the influence of Herman Melville on the project, and what the New Galician Cinema consists of.
How did you find the footage in the first place? And what was the process whereby you decided that there was enough material for a film?
Xc: I found the material under the TV in my house when I was changing the VHS machine for a DVD player. I started to clean and there.
