A generally jumbled mess
bowmanblue4 October 2014
I know that not every British gangster flick should be measured against Guy Ritchie's work. And, to be fait, I Against I is nothing like Ritchie's work - in other words it's pretty awful. Whereas as Ritchie can make a complex narrative with numerous characters come together and let the viewer easily make sense out of it, I Against I just seems to want to play around with the narrative structure for the sake of it Basically, it's a jumbled mess. Again, the far superior Pulp Fiction moved beginning to end and vice versa and got away with it. Some films can do that. This one can't. Scenes seem to happen in random order, making it increasingly hard for the viewer to follow what's happening.

Then there's the characters - who cares about them? They're not particularly likable and the fact that the story's told out of order makes it hard to keep track of them.

A low budget British gangster film without any major names attached to it was always going to be hard work. And indeed it was.

Its rather a standard fare.

Not nearly as good as the poster claims. A bit hit and miss throughout and barks more than bites. One of those films I would have completely forgotten about, if indeed I had not noted it down.

Very boring

Warning: Spoilers
Really disappointing film. Plot was no surprise and coming across a drugs buy four rooms away from a potential murder scene was ridiculous. Drugs buyers had automatic weapons yet it cut to drake starting his car. Its high performance so why not start first time? Overall i thought it was disjointed and a poor reflection of the underworld. Based on a son murdering his father and trying to frame two men for it, one of whom was banging the wife! A gangster would example him. Based on the British gangster this is an awful film with a lead who has been made to look like Danny dyer. I suspect the director of the film had more footage to explain the story but this must have been trimmed away as the jumps were so evident and took the story away.

Has a hit-man getting paid for murder ever turned up with a hammer? That was an ill conceived idea and needed more coverage

This movie just sucky sucky
aadamson-602-9055547 February 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this movie couple days ago, and it was not even slightly enjoyable. I have to say I forced myself to finish it just because it was movie night and I paid for it.

The only entertainment me and my friends had during it, was making fun of how stupid it is. I expected so much more.

Story is rather unbelievable, even tho we normally suspend disbelief for this type of movie. They could have added zombies to this disaster and it would have made no difference.

I did not get this movie at all. Why did guy kill his father? Why did guy kill himself? What was supposed to be terrifying bad guy is really just based on some spoiled 40 year old, living with his parents. I had a friend like that once, and maybe if both of guys parents were present in movie, and he was not a gangster and his mother kept nagging him, maybe I can see why he kills them, hikkomori's do crazy things all the time. But to believe crime boss is doing it and behaving like some spoiled overgrown child, it just makes no sense.

This is my first review, and I am not professional, just a guy that likes watching foreign movies, so don't hate. This one is just a total miss as far as I am concerned.

Against Better Judgment I Saw This Movie
BingBangBoom2 February 2013
Warning: Spoilers
... and I regret that decision. I was hoping that there would be something watchable, something redeemable about this movie. Truthfully it is just very boring movie.

Scenes are placed out of order. Lots of movies do that as plot divide. Except, in this movie, its nonsensical. Entire movie happens over course of one night. Not only that, but I got feeling that they used filler just to reach 84 minutes so it will be OK for cinema duration guideline. What that means is, script might have been meant for 15 minute sketch. They stretched that 15 minutes into 84 minute bore-fest.

I try to find little bit of good in everything. But I find this movie lacking at everything it tried to be. It tries to glorify murdering own parent, torture, Russian roulette, and killing people. But it does so tastelessly, stupidly, without tact or sense, and without organized time-line.

If I did not commit myself to seeing entire movie so I can give it fair review, I would not have bothered to finish watching it. As a matter of fact it took me three attempts to get through its 84 minutes as first two it was putting me to sleep.

Having endured this movie, I would have to advise others against watching it.

Bloody Awful!
realvedmak14 May 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Let me save you couple hours of your life. Bad guy (BG) has his wife cheat on him with Guy 1. She hires Guy 2 to kill BG. She tells BG's father. His father tells BG what is going on. BG kills his father, for no apparent reason whatsoever. BG goes up to Guy 1 and Guy 2 and tells them to kill each other. Then BG proceeds to play Russian Roulette with his wife, which ends with him killing himself. In meantime two incompetents, Guy 1 and Guy 2, kill each other, again for no reason at all, as they already agreed not to kill each other. There are no actual action scenes, its all left to imagination. Total waste of time. If I want to use my imagination last thing I need is this movie.

My summary is lot better than actual movie plays out. Whoever did cuts, positioned them into a jumbled mess, back and forth in time, but to say it was done badly is understatement. For example of movie that actually did it correctly, watch Reservoir Dogs by Tarantino. The only possible reason anybody should watch this movie is to see how NOT to do it.

Utter and complete garbage whose only purpose should be to torture people by making them watch it.

Interesting thriller, some bad points though
k-wojas3 February 2013
A couple of 1 star reviews given, so amongst the worst films ever made. And a 10 star review, so amongst the best ever films. Mmmm. Probably somewhere in the middle. Good points, cinematography is great, and there is a dark ambiance and mood to the film, it's not immediately obvious what is gong to happen, but it does confuse at times. Bad points, acting not so great, and maybe too much driving in cars. Also, is a bit tough to like he characters or care for them. I can think of loads of worse films, but I can also think of loads of better ones too. I recently saw The Master, and this film is nowhere near that, but is better than a film called The Covenant that I saw on DVD recently.

Really enjoyed this film
mariak_home30 January 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Set in a metropolitan underworld, two very different protagonists are unwittingly caught in a slowly escalating nightmare over one night in which each has to find and eliminate the other or be killed himself. It is only through flashbacks and sudden twists that we the audience gets to find out what is really at stake, and to disentangle the motives in this psychological thriller. As a plot it really works well.

It may not be a big budget gangster movie from Hollywood, but there are enough close up car chases and fast action for one critic to have written that it's a bloke's film. Yes, but it's also a film you can watch alongside your girlfriend or boyfriend. Why? Because it has universal themes of someone ordinary being pushed beyond their limit, and love that ultimately has no limits. So we voted it our film of the month. There are 12 of us in the film club and we see 50-60 films a year. Go watch it.

Keeps you excited during the whole movie
john-roger-601-4103646 February 2013
I have just watched it and must say that I was constantly excited. The actors, especially Kenny Doughty, make the whole movie worth watching it. Of course it is not a Hollywood one but it is from UK! What I like on this movie that it was filmed in London which makes it really authentic. Of course some scenes are quiet tough but the good actors in it makes it a good film. I wish my English was a little bit better so that I could describe in more details. If you want watch a thrilling movie that comes from the UK, also with UK actors then I would say you got to watch it.To summarize it: over popcorn and beer I can really recommend watching it. Best greetings from Germany

Worth watching
mcswhyte21 February 2013
Not a bad film. It is different to a lot of your usual Brit gangster films . OK there are a few flaws but this film was obviously not made with a Hollywood budget .

It is a well crafted fast paced stylishly shot film noir which reminds me of some the old black and white movies from the 50's. The London locations add to the atmosphere and there are some good performances especially Ingvar Sigurdson who's ice cold demeanour is a constant plus throughout the film. This film is different from what I expected and the twist is also unexpected.  So if you like a femme fatal , a dark film with a good twist you should check this out .

Well though out plot, surprising ending!
TracyRB24 March 2013
Great cinematography, with a dark plot set to explode and confuse you along the way. A bit to much driving around in a few parts of the film but well thought, could have done with a nice car chase but hey budget was tight and it worked out okay in the end. Good acting from the cast with a well thought out plot. Looking forward to seeing the evolution of his next films. The dark theme contrasted with the back drops of London, which was nice to see. Some parts were a tad bit violent but added to the suspense. Unsure why there are some bad reviews as it was thoroughly enjoyed by all of us ignore the bad remarks and make another. Keep the cameras rolling.

Enjoyable fast paced crime thriller
Welshy815 February 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This film is by no means perfect, but i still loved the way it is shot in London. No Danny Dyer clichés thankfully and keeps the story moving with lots of flash backs adding twists as to who did it. Similar in style to Reservoir Dogs, i thought it might be just a boys film, but i was pleasantly surprised it was more of a crime thriller. No flash bang gangster nonsense but a thinking film. Far removed from all the Hollywood nonsense they churn out, that you can predict the ending 5 minutes in. If you want something different watch this. This film is very much like Marmite you love it or hate it for what it stands for and the genre. I love it :)

If you want to look at London in a slightly different way than usual, try I against I !
matart198210 February 2013
When asked why I enjoyed this film so much I would say its charmingly grim atmosphere. I am struck by its mood-feeling of solitude and claustrophobia and yet paradoxically it takes place in London, one of the biggest and the most populous cities in Europe.

Its absence of top Hollywood stars is even an advantage. We expect such actors to play particular roles, but here it's different - for precisely this reason you look at the movie without preconception and get on with enjoying the puzzle. With Isaac and Ian (Ingvar Eggert Sigurðsson and Kenny Doughty) you can sense the fear, not of undefeatable heroes or immortal supermen, just people pushed to the limit. At the same time, the behavior of these characters gives the hint that they are not what they appeared to be at the beginning. With his craggy look and a natural performance, Ingvar was especially convincing to me. Joseph (Mark Womack), with an expressive manner, brings even darker balance to the script.

Here's bit of sad news - I missed seeing London crowds in the main storyline. To my eye, insignificant details like chatting couples or .. even a stray dog, that would have created a little more realism. On the other hand wasteful scenes and people don't work for me with a predominantly grim plot. What I did find frustrating was the unexplained bits. Why for example did it seem that Sophia(Sónia Balacó) plays the role of an ingénue as well as someone very shy? What was the origin of hatred between Carmichael and his father? There are hints but not quite enough.

Although once into the film you get to know who is who, paradoxically there is also some sort of unpredictability, and the final scenes are a surprise. Not only that, there are other turning points in store and an unexpected twist. Genuinely, I against I is pretty atmospheric (the action takes place at night) and in all likelihood it is not a likely film for fans of blockbusters or so-called epic movies that include spectacular explosions, millions of casualties etc. In this story there are no winners in spite of appearances. If you want to look at London in a slightly different way than usual, try I against I .

Better than expected
fedc8 October 2014
Pretty good. Clearly super low budget but I enjoyed it, nice ending too.

Not being a professional critic I'm sure I missed some of the finer details but its a thriller that delivers on that front.

I thought the beginning was a bit slow but it picks up quite a bit after the first 20 minutes or so.

The acting was OK (I'm being generous) but forgivable considering how clear it is that corners had to be cut to make it to the end.

Overall, it was a decent rental that delivered what I expected. You wont be blown away with special affects and first class acting but I don't regret seeing it.
