The inspiration behind Melbourne based filmmaker Jeremy Bliss' debut short film, Toy Soldier, arose from some pretty raw personal experiences. "I spent a year abroad after school, in Israel mainly," Bliss, whose family is Jewish, tells Filmink. "I was there during the war in 2006. Living in such an intense environment with people being affected by it every day has a big effect. Then one of my friends was sadly killed in the war. These were the obvious first inspirations to writing the film." The resulting film Toy Soldier, set to premiere at the upcoming Melbourne Film Festival, tells the story of Magnus (played by Bliss), a soldier so consumed by a traumatic event that occurred at war, that he loses any meaningful connection to life.
