Most know Karen Gillan as Nebula in the MCU or from the newer Jumanji films. Or if you’re a weirdo like me you remember her from her great work in the third season of Ntsf:sd:suv. As her time as Nebula draws to a close, she’s been popping up in some really interesting Indie work. While her role was brief, she had quite the screen presence in last year’s Next Exit. And I’m not sure if you’re aware but Russell Crowe has been absolutely killing it lately. So I was very excited to see Gillan and Crowe team up for a new crime thriller.
Sleeping Dogs takes the viewer on a very interesting journey of discovery. Gillan’s Laura Baines is quite layered and allows a little more grey area.

March brings a fresh slate of new shows and films to Hulu. The rotation of the catalogue also makes room for well-loved films arriving on the streamer this month. Sports buffs will enjoy “Love and Basketball” (2000) as well as “Kicking & Screaming” (2005). Animated family favorites include “Rio” (2011) and “Ice Age: Continental Drift” (2010).
As for new releases, Keira Knightley and Carrie Coon play hard-working journalists in the investigative thriller “Boston Strangler” (2023) from writer and director Matt Ruskin. Olivia Colman can be seen as Miss Havisham in FX’s rendition of “Great Expectations.” And a new twist on reality dating involves the charming countryside with “Farmer Wants a Wife.”
And Best Picture Oscar nominee “Triangle of Sadness” hits the streamer on March 3.

It’s ironic but unavoidable that the greatest annual celebration of film should be a television special — but that’s just how it is. March often means Oscar season, a time for cinephiles to boot up that small screen you use for movies and use it to see if they win any awards during a telecast.
If you don’t have TV service anymore, Hulu has you covered with a pre-Oscars telecast as well as two red carpet specials before and after the main event. Though the ceremony itself won’t be livestreamed on Hulu, it will be added the next morning, like regular ABC programming. Awards viewership has been in general decline over the past several years, but next-day streaming gives curious viewers a chance to join the conversation and boost those Oscar ratings after the live show. It’s also a chance for superfans to pause and rewind...

(Welcome to Under the Radar, a column where we spotlight specific movies, shows, trends, performances, or scenes that caught our eye and deserved more attention ... but otherwise flew under the radar. In this edition: a road trip dramedy takes a turn for the supernatural in "Next Exit," "Slash/Back" puts an extraterrestrial twist on a cultural coming-of-age tale, and "Something in the Dirt" goes for broke.)

Blue Finch Films has boarded international sales on European genre titles, Scandinavian thriller “Good Boy” and found footage film “Stéphane,” ahead of their world premieres at Beyond Fest.
“Good Boy,” which delves into the perils of the modern dating world, follows Sigrid who thinks she’s met the perfect match in Christian until she comes to find out that he lives with a man who acts like his pet dog.
French thriller “Stéphane,” a new take on the found footage genre, follows Timothée, as he documents his time with the larger-than-life, and almost unbelievable character that he meets whilst shooting a short film. As time goes on their jovial and eccentric talks become something far more sinister.
“Stéphane” directors, Timothée Hochet and Lucas Pastor, said: “Our movie is an homage to all of the Stéphane’s in the world. We all know a guy like him, in all of his weirdness and authenticity.

After a video surfaces of a child playing cards with a ghost – released by “life Beyond’ a scientific study based in San Francisco and run by Dr. Stevenson (Karen Gillan) – leads to widespread acceptance of ghosts, people begin volunteering to commit suicide so they can be part of the scientific research and move on to the afterlife. An afterlife that is no longer terrifying given what Stevenson’s research has revealed. Two of those volunteers are New Yorkers Rose, a woman who’s seemingly trying to escape her current life; and Teddy, a man who wants to be famous – even if fame is found through dying. Assisted dying is a thorny issue with strongly held views on both sides. Would that change if we knew that death was not the end? Set in a world where ghosts have been confirmed as real, this thoughtful, observant and surprisingly funny film follows two people as they drive across the US with the intention of ending their lives as part of a controlled experiment. The researchers’ idea is that they might find out more about the afterlife; the protagonists don’t attach much value to their existence as it is; but there are a lot of unknowns, not least what will happen along the way.

Next Exit Review: Ghostly Supernatural Drama Makes A Lasting Meal Of An Underbaked Premise [Tribeca]
What if there was life after death? And what if after death, the ghosts of our loved ones came back to ... play cards with us? That's the curious scene that opens "Next Exit," a supernatural drama written and directed by Mali Elfman in her feature directorial debut. And it's a revelation that shocks the world, which witnesses the scene of a young boy playing cards with the ghost of his deceased dad via a recorded video that proves once and for all that ghosts are real. And in turn, it sets off the chain of events that leads to...

"It's not just the end, it's the beginning!" A festival teaser has arrived for a film titled Next Exit, premiering at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival this month, playing in the U.S. Competition section. The film marks the feature debut of indie producer Mali Elfman, who is friends with Karen Gillan and has been producing tons of great indie films over the past few years. When a research scientist makes national news proving she can track people into the afterlife, Rose sees a way out and Teddy sees his chance to finally make it. These two strangers, both harboring dark secrets, race to join the doctor's contentious study and leave "this life" behind.
