“All my friends have worked with the Muppets. Everybody I know has done a thing with the Muppets and I always felt a little bit left out,” Michael Caine told Et in 1992 on the set of The Muppet Christmas Carol, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. “But they only did half-hour television shows and I got to do a two-hour movie, so it's great.”
While Caine donned the trademark robes and night cap to portray Ebenezer Scrooge, the reimagining of the Charles Dickens classic also featured Kermit as Bob Cratchit, Fozzie as Mr. Fozziewig (modified from Fezziwig), Miss Piggy as Mrs. Cratchit and Gonzo as Dickens, who hilariously narrates the story with Rizzo the Rat. Despite the recognizable names and faces, some voices of the characters would sound a little different to Muppet fans.

Rosa Margarita Marulanda, 61, lives with one goal in mind: to become the first Hispanic to hold the Guinness World Record for having the longest nails.
Seven years ago, the native of Colombia’s capital city Medellín made the decision to grow her fingernails, which are currently about four inches long, to the point of not being able to use them to complete household chores, or button pants. The last time she cut her nails was in March of 2010.
“I am proud of my nails,” Marulanda said to Spanish-language newspaper El Colombiano. “I know that they are the longest in Antioquia.

When CBS’ NCIS: Los Angeles first came calling, New York-bred Renée Felice Smith had just graduated from Nyu’s Tisch School of the Arts with little more on her resume than an Off-Broadway show and a passed-over CW pilot — Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino’s The Wyoming Project, which she likens to “Little House on the Prairie meets Party of Five” — on her resume.

It doesn't take much knowledge of the horror genre to realize a final chapter hardly means anything. Just as many franchises that have had a "final chapter" have carried on with gleeful bloodletting as if nothing of finality has ever even occurred. So it's no surprise the Saw series has returned. Seven years after the series' apparent conclusion, the games are rigged back up, the unwilling participants are again in imminent peril, and the mysteries surrounding the Jigsaw killer and his legacy are at it once again. While the return of this franchise could have been used to shake things up, though, those traps and the mystery they bring offer little freshness or a sense of the new to the proceedings. Fans of the series will be happy with the franchise's return, but the Spierig Brothers' Jigsaw and its latest game won't be winning over any new contestants. The original Jigsaw killer,...

Lionsgate’s “Jigsaw” carved up $1.6 million at the Thursday previews at more than 2,400 locations. “Jigsaw” picks up several years after “Saw 3D,” with signs of Jigsaw’s deadly traps starting to reappear, hinting that someone is continuing the grisly legacy of John Kramer. Peter and Michael Spierig are directing from a script by Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger. 2010’s “Saw 3D” earned $1.7 million at the Thursday previews before it went on to gross $22 million its opening weekend. “Jigsaw,” however, is only expected to make somewhere in the high-teens to $20 million range. There was no way to predict that a low-budget, independent horror movie with a no-name cast would go on to become one of the most influential films in cinematic history. But 40 years ago, John Carpenter built the framework for one of the most successful franchises ever and helped create the “slasher” genre with the 1978 smash Halloween.
In the ensuing years, Michael Myers (aka The Shape) became one of culture’s preeminent boogeymen, Carpenter’s haunting theme continued to set an ominous mood and the fictional town of Haddonfield dealt with a serious body count problem. While the motivations for Michael’s actions grew more convoluted, he remained a terrifying force four decades later.
Now, with a new Halloween in the works from director David Gordon Green and writer Danny McBride, featuring original star Jamie Lee Curtis as the ultimate survivor, Et decided it was time to look back on the franchise to determine which film is a dull...

Michael Singer had ignored the small lump under his left nipple for months, when he finally decided on a whim to mention it to his doctor during an exam in December 2010.
After a surgical biopsy, Singer returned to the clinic five days later to get his stitches removed and was floored when the doctor said, “Mike, I’m sorry to have to tell you this, but you have stage 2 breast cancer.”
“I thought, ‘No way — men don’t get breast cancer,'” recalls Singer, a retired federal government facilities manager from New York City, now 57. “What in the world is he talking about?...

Seven years after the release of Skyline, a belated sequel to the alien invasion tale is about to arrive...and it's extremely good.
DVD & Bluray
Whilst the first Skyline movie, released back in 2010, made a decent profit at the box office (almost $80 million from a $10 million-ish budget), the majority of the reviews dished out to the sci-fi yarn were not exactly kind. With 15% on Rt and a current 4.4% from users on IMDb, the film has often received widespread derision from both critics and general audiences alike.

Carol Fowler Durham was at a faculty meeting at the nursing school where she teaches in 2010, when she began shaking so violently she couldn’t sit still. Fowler did not realize that her body had launched an attack on itself, and that she was becoming deathly ill. Seven years later and fully recovered, Fowler now raises awareness about sepsis, the condition that almost killed her.

“For an intellectual product of any value to exert an immediate influence which shall also be deep and lasting, it must rest on an inner harmony, yes, an affinity, between the personal destiny of its author and that of his contemporaries in general.”—Thomas Mann, Death in Venice Barry Lyndon. I can’t believe there was a time when I didn’t know that name. Barry Lyndon means an artwork both grand and glum. Sadness inconsolable. A cello bends out a lurid sound, staining the air before a piano droopingly follows in the third movement of Vivaldi's “Cello Concerto in E Minor.” This piece, which dominates the second half of the film, steers the hallowed half of my head to bask in the film’s high melancholic temperature. Why should I so often remember it? What did I have to do with this film? I only received it with...

Seven years and 99 episodes later and the stakes have never felt higher on The Walking Dead, which is an achievement in and of itself given how most majors TV shows tend to coast along on recycled ideas and shoddy storytelling in their twilight years.
Granted, The Walking Dead is not without its faults, and that’s something series producer and director Greg Nicotero discussed at New York Comic Con last weekend (via Polygon).
Nicotero, who has been tasked with directing season 8’s super-sized opener, “Mercy,” admitted that everyone involved made a conscious effort to up their game in anticipation for The Walking Dead‘s latest instalment, which is likely a reaction to season 7’s lukewarm reception. With the exception of April’s finale and that bloody premiere, “The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be,” not an awful lot happened during the show’s seventh season. However that may be,...

It may not be the best poster of the festival—though it’s not bad—but Binoche’s look of blissful abandon seems fitting as New York cinephiles head into another fortnight of cinematic nirvana. As usual I’ve tried to collect posters for all the films in the festival’s main slate, the only two I came up short on being Serge Bozon’s Mrs. Hyde and Chloé Zhao’s The Rider. When the original “Law & Order” was cancelled in 2010, people took the news hard. So hard, in fact, that the decades-spanning procedural was mourned publicly on the very network that cancelled it:
“I, for one, love cop shows,” Tracy Jordan says on “30 Rock” (Season 5, Episode 3, “Let’s Stay Together”). “I can’t wait for ‘Law & Order’ to come back,” he adds, right before Grizz whispers in his ear, breaking the bad news.
“Why? It was a tentpole! A tentpole!!” Tracy screams.
Seven years later, he’s not wrong. Though only one of the four spinoffs is still on the air — “Law & Order: Svu” returns September 27 on NBC — the franchise remains a memorable part of the cultural landscape, with its format, music, characters, and storytelling still easily identifiable to millions of viewers. Its influence on other series cannot be understated, including the hit limited series the latest “Law & Order” spinoff is emulating.

This thin documentary follows a handful of obsessives as they search for $1m in gold and jewels that have supposedly been hidden in the Rocky Mountains
Seven years ago, an eccentric millionaire art dealer claimed to have hidden a treasure chest stuffed with $1m in gold and jewels somewhere in the Rocky Mountains. In his self-published memoir, Forrest Fenn dropped clues as to the whereabouts of the stash. This thin, slightly exasperating documentary follows a handful of Fenn treasure obsessives as they chase fame and fortune.
Like gamblers chugging coins into a slot machine, the diehards among them are convinced they will beat the system to find the loot. One woman admits to spending close to $30,000 hunting. Is the treasure a hoax, as some have claimed? The film could have done with some tougher questioning of Fenn, a colourful, controversial figure now in his 80s. When Max Botkin’s high-concept sci-fi thriller “What Happened to Monday?” landed on the Blacklist of “most liked” unproduced screenplays in 2010, the film followed seven brothers living in a dystopian future world where families are only allowed a single child. Seven years later, Tommy Wirkola’s version of the film is complete, with one major twist: now it’s about sisters.
Although the film went through a number of rewrites during its journey from page to screen, it was Wirkola who hit upon the idea to change the gender of the septuplets, all the better to add a different dimension to an already clever concept. But his idea came with a caveat, as he could only imagine one star in the role (well, the seven roles): Swedish star Noomi Rapace, whom he had once considered casting in his “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.”

Remakes are not always bad things. Take, for example, The Breaking Point, based on a novel by Ernest Hemingway. First published in 1937, To Have and Have Not followed the adventures of Harry Morgan, a fishing boat captain in Key West, who is forced into the black market, ferrying contraband between Florida and Cuba. Seven years later, it was adapted for the big screen by director Howard Hawks, based on a screenplay credited to Jules Furthman and William Faulkner (?!). The film departed significantly from its source material, becoming a romantic, wartime thriller with comic elements, featuring the first screen appearance by Lauren Bacall, who famously fell in love with Humphrey Bogart during production. The shot of Manning, who smiles as she runs her hands through her hair, was taken by veteran photographer Annie Leibovitz.

“If something’s not representing you, you just have to change it,” queer filmmaker Silas Howard told IndieWire last month. “Because no one else is going to care enough to do it for you.”
That’s exactly what “BearCity” writer/director Doug Langway did when it came to addressing the dearth of movies about his community: Bears. A passionate niche within gay male circles, a bear, for the uninitiated, is an affectionate term for “the bigger, hairier guy,” as Langway put it. With only one feature under his belt from 1996 (“Raising Heroes”), Langway initially set to work on a script that would encompass all the colors of the bear rainbow.
Seven years and three movies later, the “BearCity” trilogy is the biggest gay movie franchise you’ve probably never heard of. It’s also a triumph of a grassroots independent filmmaking model that has all but disappeared.

Seven years have passed since The Walking Dead first shuffled onto the small screen, and in that time, AMC’s flagship has become a San Diego Comic-Con regular, bringing tons of goodies for fans to the convention each and every year. One of those is, of course, the new trailer for the upcoming season and this year is no different.
Yes, that’s right, the network stormed into Hall H today with a glorious preview for season 8 in hand, and we’ve got it for you up above to feast on – and watch over and over again as you eagerly await the October premiere.
It’s surely just the first of many promos to come, but if what we see here is any indication of what AMC plans to deliver this Fall, then we’re certainly in for an explosive season, one that promises all-out war between Rick and Negan...

As part of celebrating 100 years of Japanese animation, French distributor Kaze released a special edition of Perfect Blue, Satoshi Kon's debut film as a director. This happens to be one of my favorite anime. Satoshi Kon basically used the tropes of Italy's psycho-sexual "gialli" thrillers to create a unique perspective on extreme stress, and while many people wondered why this film is animated instead of live-action, it allowed for some seamless tinkering with hallucinations and illusions. Released back in 1997, Perfect Blue has been a major influence for many directors, and is openly referenced (sometimes credited, even) in films like Black Swan and Requiem for a Dream. Seven years ago, Satoshi Kon was unexpectedly diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and died a few months afterwards,...

For way too long now, the concept of #girlpower in comedies has been dominated by white female narratives in which women of color are an afterthought, either playing an assortment of nondescript characters or sassy sidekicks who are always a call away from the white heroine, just waiting to help her solve her problems and win the man. For every How to Be Single, Bridget Jones sequel, He’s Just Not That Into You, and Bridesmaids there are approximately 0.05% (not a real statistic, but it feels like one doesn’t it?) women of color-led comedies out there starring women who aren’t J.Lo. Therefore, Malcolm D. Lee’s Girls Trip feels like the first of its kind: a raunchy, endlessly entertaining comedy written by and starring black women.
Even though it doesn’t seem like Girls Trip is up to much — it has a by-the-numbers plot and a lesson...

The Criterion Collection continues to show David Lynch love. A month after releasing “David Lynch: The Art Life,” everyone’s favorite DVD/blu-ray company is doing likewise with his underrated “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me,” which was hugely polarizing when it first came out in 1992 but has seen its reputation grow in recent years.
Also joining the collection this October are “Personal Shopper,” making Olivier Assayas and Kristen Stewart two-for-two in receiving the Criterion treatment (“Clouds of Sils Maria” was similarly honored); Agnieszka Smoczyńska’s mermaid horror-musical “The Lure,” which also arrived in theaters earlier this year; and Stanley Kubrick’s “Barry Lyndon.” More information below.

Like so many TV series, Prison Break initially came and went way too quickly. Fans were crushed when it was canceled. Seven years later, the two lead actors, Dominic Purcell and Wentworth Miller got together on the set of another show they were working on and started talking about how great it would be to bring it back. And, bring it back they did. With the help of some Netflix popularity and producers realizing the show still had some life left, it returned. Season 5 just ended and it took fans across the world to yet another prison to escape
