Exclusive: Netflix’s new feature Boss Dan Lin has tapped former DreamWorks Animation and Coyote Vs. Acme producer Chris deFaria to consult for the streamer’s animation department, we hear on very good authority.
Lin and deFaria worked together on the mega success of The Lego Movie when the duo were at Warners. Essentially, what is being sorted at Netflix is how to eventize their animation movies more. The streamer, together with Annapurna, saved the Blue Sky axed Disney LGBTQ+ movie Nimona, a casualty of the Disney-Fox merger; the pic wound up getting an Oscar nomination for Animated Feature.

The year 2023 was an embarrassment of riches when it came to animation. Movies like “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” became massive commercial successes and crossed the billion-dollar mark at the box office, while movies like “Nimona” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” hit big with audiences and critics. There were films that boasted wildly different aesthetics and showed the power of the animation medium, like “Blue Giant” and “The First Slam Dunk.” We also saw the return of legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki, who gave us his most personal film to date with “The Boy and the Heron.”
That’s a lot for 2024 to live up to — luckily, it seems the year will bring with it a healthy mix of big studio franchises and more grown-up animated fare. There are still big and highly anticipated animated movies slated to be released in 2024. Here is a rundown of 2024 animated releases with updates to come.

“The Imaginary,” an upcoming hand-drawn animated fantasy film from Japan’s Studio Ponoc that was selected for the main competition at the upcoming Annecy International Animation Film Festival, is set to debut July 5 on Netflix. An Oscar-qualifying run is also planned.
“The Imaginary” is directed by Yoshiyuki Momose, whose credits as an animator include Studio Ponoc’s 2017 debut feature “Mary and the Witch’s Flower” and Studio Ghibli’s Academy Award winner “Spirited Away.” Studio Ponoc founder Yoshiaki Nishimura, the Oscar-nominated producer of Studio Ghibli’s “The Tale of The Princess Kaguya” and “When Marnie Was There,” is producing.
Based on the novel of the same name by A.F. Harrold and illustrated by Emily Gravett, “The Imaginary” is described as a fantasy that “portrays the depths of humanity and creativity through the eyes of young Amanda and her imaginary companion, Rudger. Netflix will be playing catch-up with its slate of films in the latter half of 2024 due to last fall’s dual union strikes. And their slate of animated projects is set to be previewed at this year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France this June. Last year, the streamer had achieved a high-profile attendance for their showcase of Nimona along with their teasers for Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget and Blue Eye Samurai. According to Deadline, this year’s presentation will feature directors Nick Park and Merlin Crossingham as they give a sneak peek of Aardman’s upcoming new Wallace & Gromit project, which has yet to have an official title.
Additionally, just after his newest sci-fi epic, Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scargiver, debuts on Netflix, Zack Snyder will be joined by executive producer Deborah Snyder and Xilam Animation Director Slimane Aniss to reveal clips from his...

Once upon a time, Netflix was in the business of auteur-driven animation, allowing filmmakers like Guillermo del Toro work on his dream project "Pinocchio," giving Henry Selick his first movie in 13 years after Disney killed his previous project, letting Charlie Kaufman deliver an existential kids' animated movie in "Orion and the Dark," and rescuing "Nimona" after Disney pulled the plug. The streamer has partnered with the likes of Glen Keane, Sergio Pablos, Richard Linklater, Chris Williams, Craig McCracken, and Jorge R. Gutiérrez, but a name that won't join this list anytime soon is legendary filmmaker David Lynch.
Speaking with Deadline, Lynch offered an update on his long-gestating animated movie "Snootworld," which he's been teasing since at least 2009. Lynch co-wrote the script for his animated feature debut with Caroline Thompson ("The Nightmare Before Christmas"), with Lynch penning the second of the film's three acts.

At the Oscars 2024, there was a big surprise when The Boy and the Heron, the last animated movie by Hayao Miyazaki, beat out the hyped-up Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. People were scratching their heads, wondering why. Some folks even got into arguments about what makes a movie worthy of an award.
The Boy and The Heron
Then, to make things even more interesting, Chris Hemsworth, the guy who plays Thor in the Marvel movies, showed up to collect the award for The Boy and the Heron. It got everyone wondering why he was there and the film’s journey to the Oscar win.
The Oscar For Best Animated Feature Goes To The Boy And The Heron
The Boy and the Heron just snagged the Best Animated Feature Oscar! People are freaking out, and fans are totally stunned.
This flick, likely Hayao Miyazaki’s last hurrah, just clinched the top spot.

“The Boy and the Heron” director Hayao Miyazaki and producer Toshio Suzuki weren’t on hand to accept their Best Animated Feature Oscar Sunday night — the second for the Japanese animation master — but Suzuki issued a statement to press gathered backstage at the Academy Awards instead.
“We’re very honored to receive the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. We thank the Academy for the award,” Suzuki said in his statement. “I would also like to give my thanks to those who were involved in the production of this film and those who worked to distribute the film worldwide.”
Studio Ghibli’s chief operating officer Kiyofumi Nakajima appeared backstage to issue the statement via a translator, apologizing for Suzuki and Miyazaki’s absence, saying, “Please forgive them. They’re kind of up there in the age bracket.”

Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron,” likely his final film, has won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
It’s Miyazaki’s second Oscar after the Japanese animation master won for “Spirited Away” in 2002. Miyazaki is the most nominated director in the Best Animated Feature category (tied with Pete Docter) with four nominations, including for “Howl’s Moving Castle” and “The Wind Rises.” Miyazaki is now also the oldest winner in the category ever, at 83, with the previous record holder being Mark Gustafson for “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.”
“The Boy and the Heron” beat out an impressive field that included Pixar entry “Elemental,” Neon’s “Robot Dreams,” Netflix’s “Nimona,” and Sony’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” the follow-up to the Oscar-winning “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” from 2018.

Ceasefire pins among Oscar guests and nominees were numerous on this afternoon’s red carpet with Poor Things actor Ramy Youssef, Oscar nominated supporting actor Mark Ruffalo from that pic, as well as Barbie “What Was I Made For?” songwriting team Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell donning them.
Youssef told Deadline, “This is for Artists for Ceasefire” about the pin.
“We have a growing list of so many artists who want a permanent immediate ceasefire in Gaza,” the actor added.
“To get really universal about it, it’s about stop killing kids,” he continued.
“We’re using our voices to speak to people’s hearts,” he added, “we want people to have safety and justice.”
“It’s obvious something a lot of people have a lot of opinions about, and I think there can be a place and time to process feelings,” Youssef said, speaking about the divided political situation in Israel and Gaza.

Hundreds of protesters have shut down a major section of Hollywood during the Oscars red carpet, turning Hollywood’s biggest night into a traffic nightmare. With just a few minutes ahead of the telecast’s scheduled start time, much of the ballroom is uncharacteristically empty and people are running to their seats.
There was a growing sense of anxiety from production staffers and publicists on the red carpet that tonight’s Oscars will not start on time due to the gridlock. The broadcast itself kicked off five minutes late.
Protesters shut down Sunset Boulevard between Vine Street and La Brea Avenue. They marched down the street with signs that read “No awards for genocide” and drove school buses covered with Palestinian flags. Police ordered the protest to disperse and waited on Sunset Boulevard with battering rams.
Executives, such as Bob Iger, waited an hour to walk the red carpet due to the traffic jam.

The stage at the 17th Annual Women in Film Oscar Nominees was scarcely big enough for the impressive show of sisterhood on display.
The event, which celebrates the women, nonbinary and trans people nominated at the Academy Awards, coincided with International Women’s Day on March 8.
When Wif CEO Kirsten Schaffer invited dozens of honorees to join her on the stage, they crammed in, shoulder-to-shoulder on the tiny platform at L.A.’s Catch Steak.
Among the small army on stage were “The Color Purple” star Danielle Brooks, “Past Lives” writer-director Celine Song, “The Fire Inside” songwriter Diane Warren and many others. Other attendees included “Lisa Frankenstein star Kathryn Newton, “Riverdale” alum Lili Reinhart and “Flamin’ Hot” director Eva Longoria.
During her toast, Schaffer stressed the importance of continuing to fight for equality in the industry. “New reports from UCLA, USC and Reframe released in the past few weeks illuminate...

A medieval word with a highly specific (but often misused) meaning, “damsel” describes a young, unmarried lady-in-waiting. It’s also the broad title given many a helpless heroine in Hollywood movies — the proverbial “damsel in distress,” trussed to the train tracks or otherwise waiting to be saved. Elodie is neither of those in Netflix’s pleasantly disruptive fantasy story, which places “Enola Holmes” star Millie Bobby Brown squarely in control of her fate.
A revisionist fairy tale in which Elodie is hastily married off and served up as dragon chow to satisfy a generations-old curse, “Damsel” treats Elodie as an action hero for our less gender-rigid times. The loud-and-clear message, achieved by eliminating “distress” from the title (though it’s still an essential part of the formula): Passive damsels be damned! Here’s a woman who can fend for herself!

Exclusive: Chloë Grace Moretz (The Peripheral), Lewis Pullman (Top Gun: Maverick), and Academy Award winner Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) have signed on to star in Dutch & Razzlekhan, a heist film based on a true story that will go into production this summer under the direction of BAFTA nominee Jon S. Baird (Tetris).
Logan Miller and Noah Miller penned the script, with Andrew Lazar’s Mad Chance aboard to produce. CAA Media Finance will arrange financing for the film and represent its worldwide distribution rights.
Based on the 2022 Business Insider article “The $4.5 Billion Question” by Rob Price and Becky Peterson, Dutch & Razzlekhan is the explosive and unbelievably true story of the most expensive heist in history, with Heather “Razzlekhan” Morgan (Moretz) and Ilya “Dutch” Lichtenstein (Pullman) — lovers, hipsters, and aspiring rapper-entrepreneurs — at its center. “Nimona,” Netflix and Annapurna Animation’s Oscar-nominated film, is a compelling tale of passion, resilience and searching for community — both on and off the screen.
When brave knight Ballister Boldheart (Riz Ahmed) is falsely accused of assassinating the queen, he teams up with the chaotic, shapeshifting teenager Nimona (Chloë Grace Moretz) in the hopes of clearing his name and bringing peace to the kingdom.
Nimona and Ballister’s quest closely echoes the long journey of the film’s producers, who overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles — not only to bring the film to screens, but all the way to the Academy Awards.
Nobody relates more than producers Karen Ryan and Julie Zackary, who have been attached to the project for nearly a decade. Originally conceived at Blue Sky Studios in 2016, the animated production first hit a speed bump in 2018 with Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox.

In early 2021, Megan Ellison emerged from a self-imposed Hollywood exile and did something she hadn’t done in over a year: She signed on to back a movie, Nimona. There was a time when this would not have been remarkable, when Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures was producing five films a year and she was considered the industry’s own Medici, the premier patron of prestige cinema. But Ellison had backed away from Hollywood in 2019 after a series of missteps and become elusive even to some of her own executives. When her former distribution chief, Erik Lomis, asked her whether she wanted to look at some reels of Nimona, which was about to get axed in Disney’s closure of Blue Sky Animation, “I wasn’t really engaging in new film projects at the time,” Ellison said, answering THR’s questions by email. “But being curious, I said yes.”

When Chris Wedge's animated film "Ice Age" first came out in 2002, it was considered novel and striking for many reasons. It was set in prehistoric times yet eschewed dinosaurs in favor of megafauna living in the Pleistocene Epoch. The three main characters were a sloth named Sid (John Leguizamo), a smilodon named Diego (Denis Leary), and a mammoth named Manfred aka Manny (Ray Romano), and they were engaged in a great migration to flee the oncoming Ice Age. The plot of their first movie apes John Ford's 1946 Western "3 Godfathers," as the three animals discover a human infant that they must keep safe and deliver back to the then-evolutionarily-novel homo sapiens living nearby.
The design of "Ice Age" was striking, aiming for broad, stylized characters that were markedly different from the friendly, big-eyed protagonists of Disney pictures. It certainly helped that the "Ice Age" movies featured a character named Scrat,...

Best Picture favorite “Oppenheimer” and “The Holdovers” were the drama and comedy editing winners at the 74th Ace Eddie Awards, March 3 at UCLA’s Royce Hall. “Oppenheimer” editor Jennifer Lame is now a step closer to winning the Oscar for deftly balancing Christopher Nolan’s interlocking, subjective POVs of J. Robert Oppenheimer (Best Actor nominee Cillian Murphy) in color and adversary Admiral Lewis Strauss (Best Supporting Actor nominee Robert Downey Jr.) in black-and-white.
The other Oscar nominees are “The Holdovers” (edited by Ace president Kevin Tent), Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Anatomy of Fall,” and “Poor Things.”
“Spider-Man: Across the Universe” won the animation award, “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie” earned theatrical documentary honors, and “Escaping Twin Flames” took the non-theatrical prize.
TV editing winners included “The Last of Us” for drama series, “Beef” for limited series, “How I Met Your Father” for multi-camera comedy series, “The Bear” for single-camera comedy series,...

To say that Suzume is one of the best anime movies to have ever been created wouldn’t be a lie considering the tremendous ratings the film has earned from almost all platforms. Encircling the life of a young teenager of the same name who sets out to save Japan through her ability to see supernatural forces, the 2022 masterpiece was a critically commended blockbuster.

The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the creation of two separate branches, dividing the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch into two distinct entities: the Animation Branch and the Short Films Branch.
The Animation Branch will represent approximately 700 Academy members working in the animation industry. This branch will have two governor representatives on the Board of Governors to oversee the animated feature film and animated short film awards.
The Short Films Branch consists of more than 200 members whose work spans narrative and nonfiction short filmmaking. This branch will have one governor representative, who will be elected for a term starting in the 2024-2025 fiscal year and will oversee the live action short award.
“The Academy is dedicated to advancing and evolving with our growing global membership and with the film industry,” said Bill Kramer, Academy CEO and Janet Yang, Academy President in a statement.

In January of 2021, Megan Ellison got a call from Erik Lomis, the former head of distribution at her company, Annapurna Pictures, asking if she’d like to take a look at a movie whose filmmakers needed a lifeline. Disney was days away from announcing that it planned to shutter Blue Sky Studios, the 500-person, Greenwich, Connecticut-based animation studio it had inherited in the 2019 Fox acquisition, and with that closure, the Burbank media giant would be dropping Blue Sky’s most promising movie, Nimona.
“I wasn’t really engaging in new film projects at the time, but being curious, I said yes,” Ellison said, in an email.
Ellison watched the hand-drawn storyboard reels, which directors Nick Bruno and Troy Quane had adapted from Nd Stevenson’s 2015 graphic novel, and instantly connected with the title character, a shape-shifter voiced by Chloë Grace Moretz who appears most often as a young woman, but...

The 2024 Best Animated Feature Oscar race is in full force, and it is an interesting one. Once again, there is no Walt Disney Animation movie nominated, but an underrated Pixar gem instead. There's a sequel to a movie that already won an Oscar with "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," the latest (but seemingly not last) masterpiece from legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki, and a fantastic little indie dark horse in the form of the largely wordless "Robot Dreams."
Then there's "Nimona," the latest Oscar-hopeful from Netflix. The film is not small enough to be considered a dark horse like "Robot Dreams," but definitely feels like an underrated contender considering it didn't get as much widespread attention as the other theatrically released films in this category. Still, "Nimona" is every bit as worthy of the award as the other nominees.
The movie is based on Nd Stevenson's graphic novel of the same name.

Studio Ghibli, like Western counterparts Disney, Pixar and the UK’s Aardman, is one of the most important animation studios in movie history. Since its first feature film, “Castle in the Sky” in 1986, Studio Ghibli has delivered two dozen thought-provoking tales beautifully rendered in a unique brand of animation. To date, its output has racked up have a lucky seven Oscar bids for Best Animated Feature.
“Spirited Away” was the first Studio Ghibli movie to break into the Academy Awards conversation and did so with aplomb in 2003. It won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature (Miyazaki the recipient) over “Ice Age,” “Lilo & Stitch,” “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron,” and “Treasure Planet.”
In 2006, Miyazaki was again nominated — this time for “Howl’s Moving Castle” alongside “Corpse Bride” and “Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit,” with the latter movie, an Aardman creation, reigning victorious.

The Annecy Animation Film Festival, which hosts world premieres of buzzy U.S. movies each year, is set to expand its official lineup with the launch of a non-competitive section.
Called Annecy Présente, the section will give the festival the opportunity to host gala premieres of high-profile movies.
“Annecy Présente will allow festivalgoers to discover a wider range of films from different places and genres,” said Mickaël Marin, the director of Annecy festival and its industry market MIFA.
“The vitality of the Annecy festival underscores the exceptional dynamism of the animation industry around the world — every year we see the emerging of new territories in Africa, Asia and South America,” said Marin, who noted that audiences for animation content have evolved to comprise adults.
