Prepare to see “Fallout” like you’ve never seen it before. Amazon Prime Video’s latest series may be based on the bestselling video games of the same name, but with new characters and mysteries, it’s sure to surprise even diehard fans.
Set in an alternate version of Earth, the series takes place in the same desolate world as the original games. After advances in nuclear technology following World War II led to the emergence of a retrofuturistic society, an apocalyptic nuclear exchange wiped out Earth as the people of 2077 knew it. Those who could afford it hid in their Vault-Tec vaults. As for the rest of humanity, they were forced to confront the horrors of this new world head on. Now over 200 years after that war, one young Vault Dweller will risk it all and travel to the surface.

With iconic roles in “Twin Peaks,” “Sex and the City” and the original “Dune,” over a 40-year career Kyle MacLachlan has established himself as both a chameleon and an on-screen legend.
So it’s no surprise that in the same week he’s launching his latest project – Prime Video’s adaptation of blockbuster video game franchise “Fallout” – he’s also the recipient of the Canal+ Icon award at Canneseries in France, where he’s giving a masterclass about his storied career.
To prepare for the masterclass, MacLachlan admitted he’d been watching YouTube videos of previous editions. “It looks like it’s more of an interview [than a class] that will go into some depth about my process, what I do and how I approach something,” he tells Variety ahead of the session on a stopover in London, where he joined the rest of the “Fallout” cast and creative team at a glitzy...

British cinematographer and filmmaker Molly Manning Walker had quite the year in 2023. She was the cinematographer for Charlotte Regan’s Scrapper, a British drama focusing on a broken relationship between a Father and Daughter. Most notably, she released her feature directorial debut ‘How to Have Sex’. This follows three teenage gal pals going on a rite-of-passage girl’s holiday to Malia, where they plan to drink, club and hook up to their heart’s content. What should be the best summer of their lives turns sour, when lead Tara experiences a shocking encounter with a guy they’ve buddied up with on their trip. Exploring the topic of consent in a heart-breaking yet honest way, How to Have Sex is an important slice of realism that showcases excellent direction, tremendous performances and tells a story worth telling.

The oldest post I could find for "Beetlejuice 2" in the /Film archives is from 2011, but director Tim Burton and Warner Bros. have been wanting to make a follow-up to the 1988 original for literal decades. As early as 1990, Burton was developing "Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian," which would have seen the Deetz family moving to the island state and Michael Keaton's Beetlejuice eventually winning a surfing contest. That version obviously never happened, but ideas for a sequel have been bouncing around Hollywood ever since, and the project has gone through tons of stops and starts and false positives on its way to finally receiving a confirmed theatrical release date of September 6, 2024.
A rocky development alone is not enough of a reason to doubt this movie's quality; plenty of films have been delayed for years and ended up being masterpieces. (Just look at "Mad Max: Fury Road.") But there are a couple...

Longtime lit agent and manager Shari Smiley has died. Smiley passed away Tuesday at age 53. Cause of death is not yet known.
Smiley had a long career in book to movie circles, and most recently had restarted her Smiley Management banner. Before that she had been at 3 Arts, this after a four year stint at The Gotham Group. There, she sold the dramatic rights to several titles, notably In A Dark, Dark Wood, The Barbizon and An Anonymous Girl, all of which resulted in bidding wars. Smiley had also been a consultant for the executor of the J.R.R. Tolkien Estate.
Smiley spent the bulk of her career, 18 years worth, at CAA, where she began as a receptionist in 1993 and was soon selling more books there than some of the tenured agents. When she left that agency, she called legendary literary agent Mort Janklow to tell him, and Janklow...

Andy Muschietti's recent superhero flick "The Flash" hoped to lure in audiences with a sprawling story that spans several parallel universes. It was the same approach taken by John Watts in "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and Sam Raimi in "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," in that all three films assembled multiple versions of certain superhero characters culled from various extant movie franchises. "The Flash" contains the Ben Affleck version of Batman as he appeared in Zack Snyder's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," as well as the Michael Keaton version of Batman as he appeared in Tim Burton's 1989 film called merely "Batman." The Flash, he finds, can run so fast that he can travel into alternate timelines.
In the film's climactic final scenes, the Flash -- having time-traveled too much -- unwittingly causes the fabric of reality to rip, allowing cameo appearances from a dozen...

Wednesday showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar remember vividly the unusual circumstances of their first conversation with Tim Burton. The filmmaker, who they hoped they could convince to join their show, was piping in from a garden full of “life-size” dinosaur models at his U.K. home. “He was wandering around his dinosaur garden talking to us on FaceTime about his love of Wednesday Addams, and the idea that the script spoke to him in terms of being the ultimate outsider,” remembers Millar of this virtual meeting in 2020 with Burton. Just a week before, the duo were doubtful Burton would even meet with them. They had already written the entire season with the help of a pandemic-era virtual writers room, but wanted Burton’s expertise and special touches. “We were told by everyone, ‘Tim’s never done television. We don’t even know if he’ll read it,’ ” recalls Gough.

After decades of fits and starts, “Beetlejuice” is back. On Tuesday, Warner Bros. announced a long-discussed sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 horror-comedy favorite will debut in theaters on September 6, 2024.
Most of the key original players will return for the sequel, including Burton and stars Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder. “Wednesday” star Jenna Ortega is in the cast as well, reportedly playing the grown daughter of Ryder’s character, Lydia Deetz, from the original. This would mark the second collaboration between Burton and Ortega after the blockbuster Netflix hit “Wednesday.” In interviews, Ortega has talked about how fastidious Burton was as a filmmaker on the set of “Wednesday” and said he was “a really great communicator and collaborator.”
“Beetlejuice 2” has been discussed for literally decades. Back in 1990, Burton hired screenwriter Jonathan Gems to work on a “Beetlejuice” sequel with the idea that it might be set in Hawaii. In the years that followed,...

Disney’s streak of live-action remakes of animated classics continues with “The Little Mermaid,” and fans are eager to see how this iconic 1989 movie comes to life in this new feature. The animated original is largely responsible for jump-starting a creative resurgence for Disney after a fallow period in the 1980s, as the film’s Broadway-level original songs and emotional story struck a chord with kids and adults alike. The resurgence continued and solidified with “Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin” and “The Lion King,” and while those three films have already gotten live-action remakes from Disney over the past decade (to whopping box office success), it’s finally “The Little Mermaid”’s turn.
Below we’ve rounded up a guide to everything we know about the “Little Mermaid” live-action remake so far.

So, we thought it would be fun to rank the Tim Burton movies list from best to worst. Of course, ranking movies is subjective, what we think is “best” may differ from others’ opinions.. But we’ve taken a few different factors like box office gross, IMDb rating, and Rotten Tomatoes audience score into account to come up with a list that we hope will spark some lively discussions.
In this article, we’ll be ranking the best and worst movies on the Tim Burton movies list. We’ll give you a brief synopsis of each movie, along with our take on its strengths and weaknesses. So, settle in, and...

How do you solve a problem like Wednesday Addams? On the face of it, the eldest child of the cheerfully goth Addams Family has it made in the shadows: She’s become the clear favorite Addams ever since her shift from a mildly morose little kid on the “Addams Family” sitcom from the ’60s (based on the comics by Charles Addams) to the deadpan comic engine of the “Addams Family” movies of the ’90s (based on both the series and the comics), where she perfectly played by a young Christina Ricci. But Ricci’s success in those Barry Sonnenfeld comedies has meant that future incarnations of the Addams Family have struggled to figure out how to keep Wednesday in the spotlight. A short-lived Broadway musical cast her as a conflicted young adult, yearning for her normie boyfriend and self-conscious about her family’s weirdness; the recent animated movies made her...

However, that’s about to change. At the showing of her latest designs, she steps away to take a call and a mangy-looking dog appears from nowhere to shower her with ticks before vanishing just as suddenly. How can Amazon Prime Video followup the first season finale of its biggest series ever in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power? The answer lies in its list of new releases for November 2022.
Understandably, Prime Video is probably pretty tired and won’t be opting for any more Middle-earth spectacle for awhile. In its place, however, are a couple of still intriguing Amazon Original series. British Western drama series The English is set to arrive on Nov. 11 to both Prime Video and BBC Two. Emily Blunt stars as a woman who heads to the American West in 1890 looking for revenge on the man she sees as responsible for the death of her son. Cool! Speaking of the English, the James Corden-starring Mammals also premieres on Nov. 11.

Autumn typically signals the start of the back-to-school season, but in Paul Feig's latest film, this return contains more magic, monsters, and mystery than pens, pencils, and homework. With Netflix's "The School for Good and Evil," the filmmaker behind "Freaks and Geeks" and "Bridesmaids" tackles his biggest fantasy comedy since 2016's much-discussed "Ghostbusters" reboot as he adapts Soman Chainani's popular young adult novel series for the small screen.
In this colorful, sweeping epic, Feig transports us to a familiar world with a magical twist: The would-be heroes and villains of tomorrow are trained at a legendary school. Split into good and evil wings, this is where everyone who's anyone in this fictional land wants to be, especially pals Sophie (Sophia Anne Caruso) and Agatha (Sofia Wyle). So, you can imagine their glee when they receive an invitation to study with the fairy-tale realm's finest tutors. However, the...

Wherever you stand on the great Disney debate of the current moment, there's no denying one simple fact: when Disney transforms one of its animated classics into a live-action remake, it's guaranteed to make lots of money. No matter how baffling it feels to look at side-by-side images of animated and live-action Simba, that doesn't change the fact that "The Lion King" pounced to the top of the box office upon its release. So sooner or later, the Disney classic you hold nearest and dearest will be dragged out of the Disney vault and brought into the uncanny valley world of live-action. But on the bright side, that's not always a bad thing!
Capitalism-fueled pessimism aside, this can actually present a fun experiment: can these classics be updated? Changed for the better? Or maybe they're just here to introduce a new generation to stories that were bound to be retold...

You may recognize Asa Butterfield from his many film and television appearances throughout his 15-year film career. Movies don’t need to contain oozing blood and gore to be considered horror fare. Psychological horror is a subgenre which can be quite effective at causing terror. Writer/director Sebastian Godwin’s first feature film Homebound is a good example of psychological horror that mostly relies on actors’ reactions to events, which take place off-screen, to scare the audience.
Homebound follows Holly, played by Aisling Loftus (A Discovery of Witches), and Richard, played by Tom Goodman-Hill, newlyweds traveling to the country to meet Richard’s family for the first time. Holly is concerned when they arrive to an empty house, but Richard shrugs it off. Apparently, it’s normal for his ex-wife Nina to refuse to talk to him, but at least she sent him a text apologizing for not being there. Eventually, Richard’s children show up one by one and none of them seem particularly happy to see their father.

“Yellowjackets” alum Ella Purnell has spent her career “trying to find the right balance” when it comes to her appearance onscreen.
“You can’t be too strong, you can’t swear, you can’t wear short skirts,” Purnell told The Independent. “You can’t be too sexy because they won’t respect you, but you can’t not be beautiful because then they think you don’t have value. We’re taught to hold our grudges inside because at the end of the day it’s still a man’s world and you’re trying to get paid.”
Yet Purnell, who made her film debut at age 14 in “Never Let Me Go,” was forced to grapple with being a woman in Hollywood during her teen years.

Ella Purnell has been cast in a lead role of the upcoming “Fallout” TV series at Amazon, Variety has learned.
Like the video games on which it is based, the “Fallout” series is set in a world where the future envisioned by Americans in the late 1940s explodes upon itself through a nuclear war in 2077.
Purnell joins previously announced cast member Walton Goggins in the series. As with Goggins, Amazon had no comment on the character Purnell would be playing. According to sources, however, her character is described as upbeat and uncannily direct with an all-American can-do spirit. But an intensity in her eyes says she might just be a tiny bit dangerous.
Purnell currently stars in the critically-acclaimed Showtime drama series “Yellowjackets,” which was renewed for a second season back in December, and lends her voice to the Nickelodeon series “Star Trek: Prodigy.” She recently starred in the Zack Snyder...

Alfonso Cuarón has set his directorial return with “Disclaimer,” a television series adaptation of Renee Knight’s novel of the same name. The project, Cuarón’s first directing effort since “Roma,” is set up at Apple and is the first series to be greenlit under the deal between the filmmaker and Apple that was first announced in 2019. Cuarón will write, direct, and executive produce the entire series, which has Oscar winners Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline attached to headline.
The project is Cuarón’s first TV series since the 2014 NBC series “Believe,” which aired only 12 episodes before being canceled.
Apple’s official synopsis for “Disclaimer” reads: The series “stars star Blanchett as Catherine Ravenscroft, a successful and respected television documentary journalist whose work has been built on revealing the concealed transgressions of long-respected institutions. When an intriguing novel written by a widower (Kline) appears on her bedside table, she is...
