The Fantasist (1986)
Directed by Robin Hardy.
Despite her family’s mixed reaction to her decision, Moira Harris‘ sheltered but curious character moves to Dublin to be a teacher. I never understood why Jurassic Park was the only dinosaur-related franchise to outlive the dino hysteria of the 90s. Don’t get me wrong, Spielberg’s classic is clearly the best movie to come out of that trend, but that doesn’t change the fact that dinosaurs as a concept are in the public domain and should have been featured in countless other films.
Fortunately for fans of all things prehistoric, Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’s upcoming 65 (March 10th) promises a return to the Jurassic-Park-less thrills of completely original dinosaur movies. And with that in mind, we’ve come up with this list highlighting six of the best non-jp dinosaur thrillers for all your prehistoric media needs!
As usual, this list is purely based on personal opinion, but since this is Bloody Disgusting, we’ll be limiting entries to monster movies and thrillers. That means no Super Mario Bros...

The Dinosaur Project is the (fictional) story of a missing Congo expedition and the findings of the Cryptozoological Society to audiences around the world. The film features stunning recovered footage of creatures thought to be extinct for 65 million years. As the search for the missing crew continues, questions remain about the source of the missing footage and the manner in which it was discovered.
Before I go any further, heres the now-defacto disclaimer: This is a found-footage movie. And you all know how much I despise the sub-genre. When its done wrong its usually done Very wrong and when its good Well I cant remember the last time it was! What also works against The Dinosaur Project is that you just cant help but compare it to Jurassic Park...

The giant monster movie on everyone’s mind right now is undoubtedly Gareth Edwards’ gritty blockbuster take on Godzilla, which opens in theaters tonight following about a week of steadily strong reviews (including ours). So, in that sense, the timing couldn’t be more perfect for Protagonist Pictures to release the first trailer for Monsters: Dark Continent, a sequel to the indie monster movie that put Edwards on the map.
Sadly, given his commitment to Godzilla, Edwards was unable to return for the follow-up, so Joe Green (Channel 4′s Misfits) is taking over behind the camera. Green is working from a script by the largely unproven Jay Basu (little-seen The Dinosaur Project), with a cast that includes Joe Dempsie (HBO’s Game of Thrones, BBC America’s The Fades), Johnny Harris (The Fades, Snow White & the Huntsman) and Sofia Boutella (Matthew Vaughn’s upcoming The Secret Service).

Universal Pictures' take on Electronic Arts' Dante's Inferno video game has found a helmer in Fede Alvarez. Deadline reports that the Evil Dead director will tackle the adaptation of the game, itself loosely inspired by the first third of Dante Alighieri's 14th century epic poem, "The Divine Comedy." Released in 2010, Dante's Inferno reimagines Alighieri as a Templar Knight traversing the nine circles of Hell to rescue the soul of his beloved Beatrice. Although the plot of the game represents a significant departure from the original text, the specific layout of Hell is directly inspired by Alighieri's words. Marc Abraham and Eric Newman are set to produce alongside EA's Patrick O.Brien with Jay Basu ( The Dinosaur Project , Fast Girls ) having turned in the...

While "Monsters" helmer Gareth Edwards has taken a huge leap from his tiny breakout film, directing next year's massive "Godzilla," the success of his eerie creature feature is something producers have been unable to leave behind. And so of course, no time has been wasted in mounting a sequel to "Monsters"—bearing the foreboding title "Monsters: The Dark Continent"—and though filming only got underway this past spring, we already have a teaser trailer to hint at what's in store. The follow-up (dubbed a "continuation") has swapped out Edwards for first-time feature filmmaker and TV regular Tom Green ("Misfits," "Blackout"), and the script from Jay Basu ("The Dinosaur Project," "Fast Girls") is set a few years after the original, with the U.S. military in the Middle East confronting another "infected zone." Johnny Harris ("Snow White & The Huntsman," "Welcome To The Punch"), Sam Keeley ("What Richard Did") and Joe Dempsie ("Skins,...

Ever since it was unveiled back in 2010, there's been talk of a possible sequel to "Monsters." And that's hardly a surprise: while Gareth Edwards' film wasn't a giant success, it made a very decent $5 million worldwide (plus much more on home video formats), which is an unqualified success for a film made on a miniscule budget. Edwards was snapped up for a much more expensive giant monster movie, helming "Godzilla" for Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures (filming just got underway last week, with Aaron Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, Bryan Cranston, David Strathairn and Ken Watanabe in the cast), and it feels almost appropriate that as he makes his second film, Screen Daily has revealed that the sequel to "Monsters" has begun filming. "Monsters: Dark Continent" is, as previously announced, the feature directorial debut of TV helmer Tom Green ("Misfits," "Blackout"), with a script from Jay Basu ("The Dinosaur Project,...

The biggest title of note in today's batch of MPAA ratings is Zack Snyder's Superman film, Man of Steel, which like producer Christopher Nolan's Batman franchise is rated PG-13. No surprise there, but I'm sure some will be interested in the reason for the rating, which is "for intense sequences of sci-fi violence, action and destruction, and for some language." Whatever that could mean, I'm not too sure, but there you have it. Additionally we have a rating for Raman Bahrani's At Any Price (watch the trailer here), the upcoming thriller Dark Skies, the Weinstein's animated film Escape From Planet Earth and a late-in-the-game re-rate (well, actually just a new reason) for this Friday's comedy release, Movie 43. Finally comes a rating for a movie titled Unfinished Song, which is actually the new title for the Weinstein's Song for Marion, which was once thought as a potential Oscar contender,...

Jake Gyllenhaal's new cop thriller is the latest in a tired movie trend
You know that feeling when you're working as a beat cop in South Central Los Angeles, keeping an assemblage of thugs, gangbangers and drug cartels in line on a daily basis, and yet you remain so starved of adrenaline that you decide to take up gonzo documentary film-making as a sideline? Brian Taylor, the renegade protagonist of Us indie hit End of Watch certainly does; or at least we can assume so, because the film is the latest in an increasingly long line of "found footage" movies, and Brian – armed only with a stockpile of handheld cameras – is its ostensible creator.
The central conceit of the found footage genre – fictional characters, be they priests, partygoers or palaeontologists, suddenly being struck by the inexplicable urge to immortalise the drama of their lives on film – can be a...

We have a gallery of new images and a trailer from the film, The Dinosaur Project, a “found-footage” movie about a group of cryptozoologists who enter the jungle to find the “Lochness monster of Africa.”
Here’s what the director, Sid Bennett told Bleeding Cool about the film’s style:
If you were going on a documentary expedition you would have a documentary cameraman and a documentary sound man and you would have high production value. You wouldn’t have the shaky camera that is associated with found footage. This premise means that if you are following an expedition with a TV crew, you are going to have moments where it is shot professionally and will have an epic feel to it, like big sweeping vistas. The movie has those elements that are not typical in found footage. The movie breathes.

In the grand scheme of things, there is a really small minority of actors who can claim to have appeared in a film about dinosaurs, yet joining that exclusive collective are young actors Matt Kane and Natasha Loring, stars of the upcoming adventure The Dinosaur Project – and we had the opportunity to speak to the pair ahead of the film’s release.
Sib Bennett’s found footage thriller is set in the Congolese jungle, where we follow a group of explorers who stumble across a colony of dinosaurs. Kane plays Luke – a troublesome youngster who sneaks himself on the trip to be alongside his father, whilst Loring undertakes the role of Dr. Liz Draper.
The pair discuss what it’s like working closely with CGI, the challenges posed by the found-footage genre, whilst Kane also tells us of his admiration for on-screen father Richard Dillane. The pair also discuss working with director Bennett,...

★☆☆☆☆ The found footage format is beginning to feel more than a little tired these days, no more so than in Sid Bennett's genre mash-up The Dinosaur Project (2012). Here we follow the apparent endeavours of the British Cryptozoological Society as they embark on an expedition into the dark heart of the Congo in search of an extinct plesiosaur. Seasoned explorer Jonathan Marchant (Richard Dillane) leads the team of intrepid explorers, only to discover that his teenage son Luke (Matt Kane) has snuck along for the ride.

If there is one thing you can say about Sid Bennett’s The Dinosaur Project, is that it is exactly what you would expect from a found footage orientated, British film about dinosaurs. And that, unfortunately, is not a positive acknowledgement.
The film begins as a couple of local inhabitants in the Congolese jungle find a bag which has tapes of footage within it, documenting a British group of explorers’ improbable journey into the jungle where they discovered a colony of dinosaurs. Amongst those ambitious explorers – who had set off to Africa based on sightings of an unidentifiable sea creature – are Marchant (Richard Dillane), his troublesome teenage son Luke (Matt Kane), Dr. Liz Draper (Natasha Loring), and Charlie (Peter Brooke), amongst others.
As the group’s helicopter crashes in the wilderness, they find themselves stranded, and as they delve deeper into the forest, they unearth a settlement of the creatures that had been presumed extinct,...

For the most part, found-footage films have largely been couched in the horror genre, and it’s always nice to see when they take a new direction.
Not only were we treated to the massive success story Chronicle this year, we’ve still got The Dinosaur Project to look forward to in just a few weeks’ time.
The trailer we saw earlier this month was more than enough to take us in, and now we’ve been sent over the new UK quad poster ahead of its release next month.

A new and admittedly less interesting exclusive quad poster for new British adventure thriller 'The Dinosaur Project' has arrived. It's not a patch on the previous quad, featured below, but just another reminder that the cool looking feature is set to hit UK theatres next month. The Sid Bennett helmed horror is somewhere between 'Jurassic Park' and 'Monsters' and uses the found footage style to showcase a small expedition group who discover a lost prehistoric world. It stars gorgeous blonde Brit Natasha Loring ('Beaver Falls') as well as Matt Kane ('The Cut'), Peter Brooke ('Wrong Turn 5''), Richard Dillane ('Argo') and Stephen Jennings ('Starship Troopers 3: Marauder'). Check out the new quad, old quad and previous trailer from the flick below....

Stumbling upon this little trailer took me by surprise, I must admit. Until this morning, I’d heard nothing of Sid Bennett’s new found footage flick, The Dinosaur Project, and after viewing the brief preview, I can’t understand how this one has flown under the radar as it has. The trailer looks pretty damn awesome, pitting man versus monster nearly too old to fathom. And, while the production looks a bit too polished (in my opinion) for a found footage flick, that doesn’t alter the fact that I really, really want to check this one out!

Studio Canal have released a new trailer for their movie, The Dinosaur Project. Not sure what to make of it but I do know that i’d quite like to watch out when it’s release August 10th. It stars Natasha Loring, Richard Dillane, Matt Kane, Peter Brooke, Stephen Jennings and is directed by Sid Bennett. It does seem odd that no one has done any other big budget dinosaur movie since Jurassic Park. Not that this looks especially big budget compared to the Jurassic Park franchise but it looks pretty impressive nonetheless.

There's been ghosts, super powered teens and giant monsters in found footage films, but now it's time for dinosaurs. Sid Bennett directs this horror adventure that makes dinosaurs deadly for the first time since Jurassic Park. In the film a father and son embark on an expedition in the Congo with a TV documentary crew in tow. The Dinosaur Project is the recovered footage showing stunning images of dinosaurs thought to be extinct for 65 million years. It sounds like John Hammond's creations are on the loose again! Honestly, this sounds interesting, but it looks a little hokey. It seems like the idea just wasn't executed well. Here's the trailer for SId Bennett's The Dinosaur Project from IGN: Sid Bennett directs and The Dinosaur Project and co-writes the film with Jay Basu. We told you last week that Tom Green (Misfits) is taking the reins on the newly titled film Monsters: Dark Continent, a sequel to the popular Gareth Edwards film that was more love story than horror movie, and now we have the plot details served up hot and ready!
Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas had originally been attached to direct the sequel, but obviously things have changed. Jay Basu, who wrote Fast Girls and The Dinosaur Project, penned the new screenplay for Vertigo.

Director Gareth Edwards' Monsters was one of the best slow-burn indie thrillers in recent years, so it was no surprise when Edwards was given Legendary Pictures' Godzilla reboot, or when a Monsters sequel was announced. Edwards wouldn't direct it, but executive produce. The new directors were to be Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas. That appears to have changed however. More after the jump. Our friends at Shock Till You Drop have just discovered via Screen Daily that a new director is being brought on to helm the Monsters sequel, currently titled Monsters: Dark Continent. Tom Green (the man behind Misfits) is now directing, and Jay Basu -- who wrote Fast Girls and The Dinosaur Project -- has written the script. No...

If you were a fan of Gareth Edwards' flick Monsters and enjoy seeing creatures hug, we've got some good news for you ... another flick is on the way to expand upon the world laid out by Edwards. Hopefully said world can go in a darker direction.
According to Screen Daily, Tom Green (Misfits) is taking the reins on the newly titled film Monsters: Dark Continent. Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas had originally been attached to direct the sequel, but obviously things have changed. Jay Basu, who wrote Fast Girls and The Dinosaur Project, penned the new screenplay for Vertigo.
The original sequel synopsis read as follows - The tale is set in a walled city, as a “Heart of Darkness” story about two brothers finding each other in a world of monsters. The variety of aliens will differ in the next installment.
More on this one as it comes.

Back in May StudioCanal has announced The Dinosaur Project which has already commenced principal photography in South Africa. Yet to settle on a title, the IMDb is listing Peter Brooke (Red Lights, The Dark Knight) cast as "Charlie Rutherford", Natasha Loring as "Dr. Liz Draper" and Matt Kane. In November 2010, TV programmakers Sid Bennett and Tom Pridham and producer Nick Hill walked into the London office of StudioCanal with an idea for a movie "about a father-and-son documentary team who discover dinosaurs in the African jungle." They had an outline, a showreel, a budget, a plan for the vfx and a clear timetable to progress rapidly into production -- but no script. StudioCanal took the bait. Budget is under $16 million. Check out the official Afm synopsis and art for what's being described as "the most exciting dinosaur action movie since Jurassic Park!

The first casting news for the upcoming cinéma-vérité effort from StudioCanal featuring nature's greatest creatures, dinosaurs, is finally here, and we have the scoop on who will be finding footage that was better left lost. Dig it!
The IMDb (so take this with a grain of salt) is listing Peter Brooke (Red Lights, The Dark Knight) cast as "Charlie Rutherford", Natasha Loring as "Dr. Liz Draper" and Matt Kane. The flick has already commenced principal photography in South Africa.
The film marks the directorial debut feature from CGI experts Sid Bennett and Tom Pridham, who recently formed their own production company, Kent Films. StudioCanal is handling world sales.
The project is described as “Jurassic Park meets Blair Witch in the style of District 9.” But producer Nick Hill also notes: “It’s not grainy hand-held; it will look beautiful and crisp and clear.”
