The 9th annual Calgary Underground Film Festival will run on April 16-22 at the Globe Cinema with a mix of outrageous comedies, documentaries about controversial personalities, cult flicks and some frank depictions of sexuality.
The fest launches on the 16th with the new comedy by Bobcat Goldthwait, God Bless America, in which Joel Murray stars as a terminally ill man who decides to kill as many stupid people he can can before he perishes himself. Also on the comedic front are Rick Alverson’s The Comedy starring TV’s Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareham as troublemaking urban hipsters; and Mikkel Nørgaard Klovn (Clown) about a Danish loser who takes a young boy on a brothel tour.
On the cult film front are Jack Perez’s Some Guy Who Kills People starring Kevin Corrigan in the eponymous role; Alex Ross Perry‘s abusive sibling flick The Color Wheel; the brutal Father...

Cine-Asie has done a wonderful job programming some of the best Korean films at the Fantasia Film Festival. Each and every year we find new gems to champion including last year’s Castaway On The Moon, which made our end year list of best films.
Founded in 1996 by visual media artist Mi-Jeong Lee, Ciné-Asie aims to foster and encourage cross-cultural dialogue between Canada and Asia, as well as support the creation of independent works by Canadian filmmakers. The organization’s director Mi-Jeong Lee has been actively supporting Asian film-related events for the last 15 years. In 2010, Ciné-Asie revived its own film festival, AmérAsia, to support Asian-Canadian cinema.
2011 is no exception, and this year they have quite a few interesting events happening in and around the festival. Below you can find some information on these events as well as on info on some of the exceptional Korean films screening this year.

The city of Cannes is getting that “after the party’s over” feeling. The Marché is now closed, and the festival is winding up, but I like to stay until the end. One of my favorite events occurs on the second Saturday of the festival and is well worth the stay, so at 11 a.m., I go to the official screening of the courts métrages en Compétition.
During the festival you can see the short films in the main competition at any time in the Short Film Corner’s screening booths, but viewing the screening of these films together is a rewarding experience. There are nine films, all between 11 and 15 minutes in length: “Badpakje 46” directed by Wannes Destoop (Belgium); “Soy tan feliz” directed by Vladimir Durán (Colombia); “Bear” directed by Nash Edgerton (Australia); “Kjøttsår” directed by Lisa Marie Gamlem (Norway...
