Meaningless Life
claudio_carvalho13 July 2014
Dexter investigates the crime scene where a prostitute was murdered and he notes that one of her tooth was broken. He recalls his collection of serial-killer cases when he was a teenager in the 80's, more specifically the Tooth Fairy killer from Oregon that has never been caught. He decides to investigate a nursing home nearby the spot and he stumbles with Walter Kenney from Oregon. Debra feels uncomfortable with the direct interference of LaGuerta in her job and she questions whether she made the right decision accepting the position of lieutenant. Marshall and Gellar have abducted a man that was jogging and are preparing him for something.

"Smokey and the Bandit" is an episode where Dexter correlates a murder case with old cases in Oregon. He follows his instincts and suspects of an old man in a nursing home. Debra is facing the difficulties to handle with Quinn and the team of the Miami Metro. What might be the connection of the new intern with the Ice Truck Killer? My vote is eight.

Tooth fairy

Warning: Spoilers
1. Deb hated her job 2. Dexter golfs 3. Dexter drops the box

Interesting episode. Dexter deals with a old timer serial killer and again pictures what he would be when he gets older and thinks about what he should pass down to Harrison. He is thinking about his legacy and heritage but also probably shifting towards how meaningless that may be after his interaction with the tooth fairy killer. Some interesting scenes in this episode as well. The ending scene with the horse was pretty gruesome. The intern stealing evidence is also very sketchy. Overall, good early season episode.

Philosophical but predictable subplot, déjà vu impression but welcomed changes, messy editing, intriguing Travis but anecdotic religious arc
igoatabase18 October 2011
How do you want to be remembered ? What heritage will you leave to future generations ? These deep and philosophical questions were asked in this third episode when I thought the season would mostly focus on religious and spiritual topics. Such a systemic approach was definitely welcome because now most people should be able to relate to Dexter's quest to get ride of his Dark Passenger. Yes because even if Lumen hasn't been mentioned yet, how disrespectful, she showed him the way toward the light. Let's also not forget the benefic impact his love story with Rita had, even if it ended tragically. But her Lemon Tree keeps growing and last summer it gave us the juiciest fruits ever !

So the legacy subplot was inspiring and should get your attention. However it was predictable from the very beginning so its outcome didn't surprise me. Viewers who have followed Dex since its first encounter with the Ice Truck Killer know better. Don't under estimate us writers ! To sum things up the twist I was expecting all along never happened. Otherwise it pointed out the complex relationship we have with old people. I still remember a short story from Night Shift, a Stephen King's collection. It's about a society where grandparents are killed by the new generation, their own children, to control demography. Sadly our reality isn't far from the fiction at times and this installment tried to express how aging can be tough for some individuals. And it became even more controversial when Dex had to look himself in the mirror !

But in the end these few interesting elements weren't enough to hide the fact that the show is getting old. If you think about it things haven't drastically changed since the earlier seasons. Hopefully Deb got promoted and her new career as a lieutenant is double-edged. It was entertaining to see her slightly struggle and it should be moving in the upcoming episodes because yes Deb rocks and Jennifer Carpenter is Talent, even if she isn't voluptuous enough (Guest comment by Vince M.). A new recruit also has potential and its first encounter with our favorite lieutenant, damn I already miss her as detective, could have been over the top if such sexist situations were history. In the end it was chuckling and the scene was well acted on both sides, specially our tiny bratty – almost super deformed – Deborah Morgan.

As for the religious arc its development was anecdotic compared to Dex's usual serial killing session. The editing has also never really been one of the series strongest quality but I found it more messy than usual. It just didn't fit properly with the other arcs and the cliffhanger was thrown into the mix in the worst fashion. In fact even Dex's side was awkward. Still I'm starting to find Travis Marshall interesting. His sister was introduced in the previous episode and here we learned why he was chosen by Professor Gellar. I also think Colin Hanks is probably not such a bad choice after all because he seems to be the actor for the job. What the writers have planned for him also intrigues me. Does he have a Dark Passenger of his own ? Will he ever realize that what they're doing is wrong ? Wait… we still don't really know what they're up to. I just hope they won't harm his lovely sister. No Gellar said she can't be saved so let's slice her life ! Please God protect her I have done very bad things so I should be the one to get punished. Sorry, I just missed the One Masuka Show this time even if he was featured for some seconds. However what his precious student did and revealed definitely came from nowhere and I can't thank her enough for that because references to past seasons can only appeal long time fans.

The tooth fairy killer
jotix10031 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
After a prostitute is found dead, Dexter who came to the scene, notices the woman has a front tooth missing. The incident triggers something in his mind, which is confirmed as he looks in the scrap book about serial killers he has kept through the years. If he is right, this murder was committed by a criminal that was named 'The Tooth Fairy" by his m.o., but if his calculations are correct, the man should be a senior citizen by now.

Things at the police headquarters are a bit tough for Debra, who must hold her first staff meeting as the lieutenant in charge of things. Maria is clearly trying to interfere with Debra's job. Appearing to be helpful, she is nothing but a woman that resents Debra's promotion. At the meeting everything goes wrong, with even Quinn being not too helpful in supporting Debra.

Dexter gets lucky at one of the senior centers in his area in locating whom he is almost sure is the serial killer he is looking for. By deduction, he has figured Walter Kenney is his man. Pretending to be checking the premises, he gets closer to Walter, a crabby old man, who does not have a partner for a round of golf. Dexter is hoping to discover whether the old fellow is whom he thinks it is.

Meanwhile, back in the church area, Travis has been checking on his prisoner, the man he attacked in the park, now being held at a room of the strange place. Travis comes to see if the stranger shows signs of repentance. The poor man has no idea where he is, much less what it is expected of him and what Gellar and Travis have in store for him. Managing to loosen his hand restrains, he is surprised by a stallion that kicks him down as his captors arrive to the scene.

Getting to know more of Walter, makes Dexter cater to the man. He is almost sure this man is the serial killer. When Kenney asks him to take him to a storage facility, Dexter hits the bingo! Now he can really check what is being kept inside, hoping to know if the old man is whom he thinks he is. Little does Dexter realize Walter Kenney wants to turn the tables around, for the senior citizen has figured out about his true identity as well.

Many Coto, long involved with the series, wrote today's installment. Stefan Schwartz, a man that has worked a lot on television was the director. The episode touches lightly on the religious-like figures of Travis and Gellar, who are the season's guests stars, but nothing is clear as to what they are really after. The other guest star, Mos Def has nothing to do in today's chapter. Ronny Cox appears as Walter Kenney.

Tooth fairy killer
rcb2009127 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I goggled your name. The greatest Dexter antagonist to ever grace this show. The tooth fairy killer is old yet cold. The tooth fairy killer needs to have a 30 season spinoff show. In fact I think he should have another spinoff show with another 15 seasons and it should be titled the misadventures of the tooth fairy killer or tooth fairy himself, Walter Kenny. We can takeaway the tooth fairy is careful and dare full considering he put a body in a cops lawn. If this doesn't convince you about how good he is I do not know what will convince you. I think the general conclusion here is that Walter Kenny (aka the tooth fairy killer) >>>>> any Dexter antagonist.

S6.E3 - Killing The Tooth Fairy [8.6/10]
panagiotis199321 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
(S6. E3) My Reaction / Review for Dexter Season 6 Episode 3 ''Smokey and the Bandit'': Episode 2 was good and I gave it a rating of 8.6/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. Masuka is absolutely in love with that girl. These two new villains, the old guy seems to be the leader but still I don't understand what they're trying to do. I really like brother Sam's vibe, he seems like he actually cares about his people. Could this old man be a serial killer? He can barely walk but you never know. These two new villains are completely nuts. Walter knows what Dexter knows, this is bad news. He got what he deserved. Masuka about to get the girl, good for Masuka. What was that ending, pretty nuts. My rating is 8.6/10.

Worries
fokuro4 January 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Should I be worried about this episode? It was an anecdote and a reflection on aging and its impacts on life and the things we leave when we're gone. Well, OK. But... was that it? Sure, Dexter got another bad guy on his table, Debra is having problems with her new position(something that HAS TO develop into a tense and interesting situation), and everybody else is looking for some meaning in what they do.

But, three episodes into the season and we do not even know what it is really about. Alright, religion and philosophy, and topics about those things. It is interesting if the approach is right. However, sadly, it's not. Forrest Gump the second seems too meek for the job, but maybe that's the point. His "guide" hasn't show his true colors yet, and it's time he showed 'em. That last scene was interesting, but it came out of nowhere. It was almost random.

I guess I should be worried, because this is Dexter, and I (and all the viewers) have all the right to be demanding with the show. But once again, I'll trust the writers, who seem to be really out of hand lately, to do the marvelous job they have showed us they're capable of. Please Dexter, tell me you're not dying.
