Dr. Montgomery tells her patient seeking an abortion that had it been 1972, she would have collapsed in an alley rather than in the elevator at the practice. This is a reference to the national legalization of abortion in the US via a Supreme Court ruling. However, abortion was legal in California in 1972 (and had been since 1967). Before 1973 the individual states controlled the laws in regard to abortion. Patty would have had no restrictions in CA in 1972. California, Alaska, Hawaii, and New York, by 1970, did not require a reason to seek an abortion.
