It’s a great pitch: A comedy about bulimia. It sells itself. So well, in fact, that more than one person had the idea. “When I saw ‘The Skinny,’ I had a meltdown,” Angela Gulner, creator and star of “Binge,” told IndieWire. “I was like: ‘My story has been told. There’s no room for it anymore.’ But then I calmed down a little bit.”
Read More: How ‘The Skinny’ Creator Jessie Kahnweiler Got From YouTube to Sundance (Hint: Jill Soloway Helped)
She realized that there was room for more than one eating disorder comedy. The success of Jessie Kahnweiler’s “The Skinny” (the web series premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was co-produced by Jill Soloway) did not mean the failure of “Binge.” Quite the opposite — it meant there was an audience for her story.
Not only that, but such a universal and pressing issue deserves more than one story.

As Vox Media continues to devote more resources to its online video operations, it has launched a series that profiles creative, thoughtful individuals who have found success in the business world. BlackBoxTV has returned for a fifth series of horror and sci-fi shorts, and its first offering of the new season takes on a topic with which many YouTubers can sympathize. The episode, titled "How to quit YouTube", follows a down-on-his-luck vlogger whose life is dictated by his viewers. The episode is directed by BlackBoxTV founder Tony Valenzuela and stars Wilson Cleveland (the creator of web series like Leap Year and The Temp Life) as a YouTube vlogger who clings to a dream of stardom despite possessing only a few thousand subscribers. With such a small audience, Cleveland is beholden to the few fans he has, and he lets them dictate his life--even when it means a remote "Travel Tuesday" at Joshua Tree. The episode is particularly relevant given recent comments from YouTube personalities like Emily Graslie and Boogie2988 about the damaging effect of verbally abusive commenters. Both of those creators...

Hank Azaria can raise up his voice in victory — most likely in a wacky fashion. Azaria, who provides a number of voices on the animated comedy institution “The Simpsons,” has prevailed in a lawsuit brought against “Leap Year” actor Craig Bierko over one of Azaria’s characters, sportscaster Jim Brockmire. Also read: Hank Azaria, Sherilyn Fenn Book Roles on Showtime’s ‘Ray Donovan’ Judge Gary Allen Feess granted Azaria’s motion for summary judgment in the suit last week, finding that the Brockmire character is copyrighted material owned by Azaria and How to Pictures, Inc. Budweiser’s premiere commercial spot for Super Bowl Xlviii has already racked up 34 million views (and counting, quickly) since it went live on YouTube on January 29, 2014, four full days before the ad was set to air on television broadcasts nationwide. The advertisement and its viewership numbers reveal a few important things. One, Budweiser is very good at advertising. Two, everyone loves puppies and Clydesdales, and everyone especially loves puppies and Clydesdales together. And three, you’ve most likely already seen a lot of the big-budget Super Bowl ads hours or even days before the game was set to take place. The videos on YouTube’s Super Bowl commercial destination, for instance, have so far been viewed a collective 77+ million times. But what you may not have seen already are some of the fake Super Bowl ads entities that aren’t major commercial brands. YouTube, for instance, enlisted a handful of...

Yuri Baranovsky knows what it takes to make a successful web series. The writer/producer/self-described "web celebrity" has had a hand in creating winning shows such as Leap Year, Break A Leg, and LoveMakers. Baranovsky has long used his blog as a way to pass on the secrets of online video success. However, a new textbook is taking things to the next level by providing an official outlet for his thoughts. Baranovsky is one of the authors of Scriptwriting 2.0: Writing For The Digital Age, a scholastic publication now available for purchase. The textbook purports to be the first academic text aimed at new media screenwriting, and is already drawing positive reviews from various new media professors. "The important aspect of this book is...the blend of traditional story structure skills with heart, soul, conflict, and imagination residing in the discipline required to make the transformation from notions in...

Hank Azaria, who provides the voices for a host of characters on "The Simpsons," including Moe Szyslak and Chief Wiggum, is suing over the rights to one of his characters. Azaria and his How to Pictures, Inc. filed suit Wednesday against "Leap Year" actor Craig Bierko in U.S. District Court in Central California on Wednesday, saying that Bierko is jeopardizing a potential movie deal by falsely laying claim to a voice that Azaria claims he created nearly 30 years ago.

I first met Joshua Malina, an actor I came to adore thanks to his role on Aaron Sorkin's still-genius 1998 series Sports Night, for an interview in support of his wickedly warped 2010 webseries, Backwash. So it's only appropriate that our second chat also be in support of a webseries I adore, Leap Year.

It’s important for proprietors of small business to have small business insurance. Especially if that small business is a startup in possession of $500,000 in seed capital, the technological knowhow to make the kinds of holographic images that brought Tupac back to life as commonplace in internet savvy households as webcams, and a handful of cutthroat entrepreneurial enemies that thrive in the seedy underbelly of Silicon Valley. Announcing the August 2011 Tubefilter Hollywood Meetup! YouTube and its partner program have opened a clear path to online video monetization. Successful video creators are using YouTube to engage and monetize audiences elsewhere—from other platforms, to apps, merch, licensing, and beyond.
