Frank Turner will attempt to break the world record for the most shows played in different cities in 24 hours. Set to hit the road on May 4th for one jam-packed rotation of the Earth, he’ll perform 15 shows across the UK, wrapping up mid-day on May 5th.
The event arrives in support of a few things. For starters, Turner will be releasing a new album, Undefeated, on May 3rd via Xtra Mile Recordings. Beyond that, the jaunt will be executed in partnership with Music Venue Trust, with each the shows hosted at grassroots music venues and independent record stores.
Fans planning to attend one of Turner’s record-breaking shows can expect a set that’s at least 20 minutes long. Tickets for the jaunt are available in several options, including stand-alone tickets and bundles with physical copies of Undefeated. Head to Turner’s website to purchase tickets.

Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry said his next career may be in politics.
Curry appeared on CBS Mornings to promote his second children’s book, I Am Extraordinary, which aims to inspire kids to embrace their uniqueness. CBS News’ Jericka Duncan asked the basketball player if he would ever consider running for president following his time in the athletic world.
“Maybe, I have an interest in leveraging every part of my influence for good in the way I can,” Curry said. “So if that’s the way to do it, then — I’m not going to say the presidency but if politics is a way that you can create meaningful change or if there’s another way outside of politics.”
A stint in politics would not be too surprising for Curry. He and his wife, Ayesha Curry, are extremely involved in the Oakland community, even after the Warriors moved to San Francisco.

Fans of DC and Superman have something to looking forward to with one particular Steam title, and to make it an even sweeter deal, the game is free to play. Developed by Indie-us Games, Undefeated is a superhero experience that feels like it takes inspiration from Hancock.
That said, it will also appeal to many DC fans waiting for a Superman game, especially after seeing the superhero in action in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.
Undefeated was released back in 2019, when the original developers were still in college. Now, only five years later, they have teased a follow-up title available to be wishlisted on Steam.
Undefeated is the Perfect Unofficial Superman Game on Steam
Undefeated is a 30-minute game that was released back in 2019 by three collegegoers.
Fans have been clamoring for a Superman game for years now, but a Aaa title based on the DC superhero is yet to be properly made.

While professional football has always captivated American audiences with its gladiatorial drama and drive, it’s at heart a multi-billion-dollar enterprise, propelled by profits and ratings. But amateur football, especially at the high school level, is a galvanizing force for communities, both rural and urban. It brings hope and unity; it’s an escape and an outlet; and for some it’s a pathway out of poverty.
Pete Berg’s Friday Night Lights, the feature film and subsequent long running fiction series about football culture in a small town in Texas, arguably paved the way for such docs as Undefeated, Last Chance U and Outta the Muck, where football serves as the narrative throughline and pretext for a deeper exploration of race and class. Boys in Blue, Berg’s docuseries about a Minneapolis high school football team and the sociocultural challenges that its community faces, premiered on Showtime in January...

Some in the industry might be irked that the Oscars and SXSW are colliding on the same weekend this year, however, it’s a win-win for both tonight: For a year ago, A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once blasted off here in Austin, TX as the festival’s opening night film. The movie becomes the first world premiere to debut at SXSW and win Oscar’s Best Picture.
Overall, Everything Everywhere All at Once won seven Oscars including Best Picture, the Daniels for Director, Jamie Lee Curtis for Best Supporting Actress, Michelle Yeoh for Best Actress, Key Huy Quan for Best Supporting Actor, Best Editing and Original Screenplay.

“All the Beauty and the Bloodshed” seemed like a lock to win Best Documentary. The political exposé on artist Nan Goldin and the fall of a pharmaceutical empire was cleaning up among critics’ groups throughout awards season – including New York, Los Angeles, and Florida – as well as being named one of the top-five docs of the year by the National Board of Review.
But as we head toward the Oscars ceremony on March 12, “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed” feels more vulnerable than ever despite a comfortable lead in the Gold Derby combined odds. After missing a nomination at the Producers Guild Awards, director Laura Poitras lost to “Fire of Love” filmmaker Sara Dosa at the Directors Guild Awards. Then on Sunday at the BAFTA Awards, “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed” lost Best Documentary to “Navalny.”

“Black Bird,” a limited series starring Taron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauser, will premiere on Apple TV Plus this July 8, the streamer announced Thursday.
Based on James Keene and Hillel Levin’s true crime memoir “In With The Devil: A Fallen Hero, A Serial Killer, and A Dangerous Bargain for Redemption,” “Black Bird” stars Egerton as Keene, a police officer’s son who is sentenced to 10 years in a minimum security prison for drug dealing. While serving his sentence, he is offered a chance for early parole, on the condition that he move to a prison for the criminally insane and befriend serial killer Larry Hall (Hauser). Keene reluctantly agrees to the unusual case, and develops a complicated relationship with Hall as he attempts to discover the truth behind the murders the convict is suspected of committing. In addition to Egerton and Hauser, the series also stars Sepideh Moafi, Greg Kinnear and Ray Liotta.

There’s a euphoria among film sellers and buyers as SXSW finally convenes Friday in Austin, Texas after a three-year pandemic shutdown.
With the last two editions of the Sundance Film Festival being virtual, and the hybrid edition of TIFF seeing reduced capacities, few industry execs, and a muted atmosphere, SXSW marks the return to packed, receptive audiences; actual live pulses which can trigger good reviews and social media wattage, culminating in what some believe could be an active sales market here in Texas’s capital.
SXSW has a knack for programming comedies, genre, and genre-twisted features; titles which are best experienced by a reactive audience. Sellers previously told Deadline that virtual viewing of such fare at recent fests doesn’t really help their cause. While SXSW is enforcing vaxx cards and mask-wearing indoors, screenings will be at full capacity. In 2019, SXSW drew a reported 73K attendees alone to the...

Exclusive: Utopia has acquired U.S. rights to feature documentary Jerry’s Last Mission.
Directed by Louisa Merino (Managing to Win: The Story of Strat-o-Matic Baseball) and produced by Melissa Hibbard (The Glass House) and Oscar winner Ed Cunningham (Undefeated), the film tells the remarkable story of a World War II fighter pilot from New Jersey who flew the last combat mission over Japan.
On August 14, 1945, fighter pilot Jerry Yellin flew the last combat mission of World War II to attack airfields near Nagoya, Japan, carrying with him instructions to continue the assault unless he heard the word “Utah,” a code signaling the Japanese surrender, which never came. It was Yellin’s 19th mission over Japan.

Historically, most of the Doc NYC short list titles overlap with the Academy’s official 15-film Oscar Short List. Until last year, while Doc NYC did not screen Netflix’s Oscar-winning “My Octopus Teacher,” for nine years the festival had screened the documentary that went on to win the Academy Award, including “American Factory,” “Free Solo,” “Icarus,” “O.J.: Made in America,” “Amy,” “Citizenfour,” “20 Feet From Stardom,” “Searching for Sugar Man,” and “Undefeated.”
The festival has screened 39 of the last 45 Oscar-nominated documentary features. In 2020, Doc NYC screened 12 of 15 titles that were named to the subsequent Academy Award Documentary Shortlist.

Former Assistant Chief of The New York City Fire Department Joseph Pfeifer is among the first responders who have been celebrated and commemorated for their brave actions during the 9/11 attacks. Now, on the historical event’s 20th anniversary, Pfeifer says there’s a “new generation of heroes” worth honoring.
During a TCA panel, where he joined fellow 9/11 first responders and survivors Ron Difrancesco and Jason Thomas, and the producing team of National Geographic’s 9/11: One Day In America, Pfeifer recalled seeing firefighters applaud medical staffers who were on the front-lines of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“It was the moment where 9/11 met the pandemic,” the former Nyfd chief said. “We saw a new generation of heroes. So while we feel things are falling apart we have to take a look where we feel this sense of being together.”

In the Emmy-nominated HBO documentary Tina, music icon Tina Turner remarks, “I don’t like to pull out old clothes.”
She’s not talking about her wardrobe.
Turner is referring to distant memories—especially, the abusive relationship with her first husband, rock pioneer Ike Turner, who regularly beat and raped her. It’s not a past she’s ever cared to revisit, yet somehow the public or the media won’t leave it be.
“Why are we so fascinated with this? Why can’t we allow her to move on?” asks Dan Lindsay, who directed the film with T.J. Martin. “It’s definitely a question that we were trying to pose within the film.”
One reason we can’t detach from Turner’s story of trauma is that it’s so compelling—a woman surmounting incredible obstacles to achieve her dreams. There’s a mythic quality to it.

This September will mark the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York City. To recognize the significance of that day as well as honor the lives lost, National Geographic is releasing a six-part documentary series, “9/11: One Day in America.” Take a first look at the trailer below.
“9/11: One Day in America” will chronicle the events of September 11, 2001 through gripping first-person narratives of the first responders and survivors who were there. The first trailer should prepare audiences for the first-hand accounts of what they’ll be seeing; it isn’t just hearing the screams and shouts of people on the ground or in the building but, at times, watching debris fall from inside the Trade Center itself.
Each episode will focus on the different levels of heroism people resorted to during the event and boasts never-before-seen footage, including from apartments and streets just after the planes hit.

Oscar winners Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin teamed up to direct “Tina,” an HBO documentary that chronicles the turbulent life and phenomenal success of its subject, music icon Tina Turner. “The most important things is knowing that people are finding resonance with the film and Tina’s story,” Martin says when discussing how the film quickly became HBO’s most successful documentary of the year with over one million viewers its first week. “Tina Turner is doing a lot of the heavy lifting in that equation,” Lindsay adds. Watch the exclusive video interview about the rock legend above.
“We were actually kind of hesitant when producers Simon [Chinn] and Jonathan [Chinn] asked us to do it,” Lindsay admits. “Are two men really the right people to tell this story? We had been approached to do a lot of celebrity focused biopics or documentaries. That was just never really of interest to us.

“My Octopus Teacher” is looking good in our Oscar odds for Best Documentary Feature after its victories at the Producers Guild and BAFTA Awards, but what about “Crip Camp”? It didn’t receive as many industry guild nominations, but it has a similar uplifting appeal as well as a resonant theme about solidarity among a marginalized group fighting for quality, which feels especially meaningful after a year of Black Lives Matter protests. Could it upset the front-runner?
“Crip Camp” tells the story of Camp Jened, a summer camp for disabled youth who found community there and were awakened to their own political power, leading them to fight for accessibility rights in public spaces. Besides its Oscar nomination, the film won Best Feature at the International Documentary Association Awards, and it earned bids from the Critics Choice Documentary Awards and the Independent Spirit Awards. One of the most famous lines from Tina Turner’s career came in her introduction to the version of John Fogerty’s “Proud Mary” released by Ike & Tina Turner in 1971. “We never ever do nothing nice and easy,” she said in a sultry snarl. “We always do it nice and rough.”
“Tina,” the documentary about Turner that premiered at the 2021 Berlin International Film Festival, has moments where it tries to be nice and easy, sliding over difficult portions in Turner’s life in an attempt to find a celebratory tone. But the film, too, mostly settles for nice and rough, which fits a woman who says in the film, “It wasn’t a good life. It was in some areas, but the goodness didn’t overcome the bad.”

When “My Octopus Teacher” won the Producers Guild Award for Best Documentary on March 24, I started to wonder if that clears the path to it winning the Oscar. It’s an emotional, heartwarming film about nature, and feel-good movies sometimes have an advantage over investigative docs and grittier subjects.
First, it must be acknowledged that the PGA Award often veers wildly from the Oscars. In fact, the last three PGA winners weren’t even nominated by the motion picture academy: “Jane” (2017), “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” (2018) and “Apollo 11” (2019). But when an Oscar nominee does win PGA, it tends to win the Oscar too, like “Searching for Sugar Man” (2012), “Amy” (2015) and “O.J.: Made in America” (2016) in the last decade. The last time the PGA winner had an Oscar nomination but lost it was Michael Moore‘s “Sicko” (2007), and that was 13 years ago.

HBO’s feature documentary Tina is an intimate overview of Tina Turner, the person behind the musical icon. It is also a final statement, as the singer is moving on from the performance part of her life. The documentary tells Tina’s story the way the singer wanted it told: honestly.
Some of Turner’s musical highpoints are skipped, like her scene-stealing role as the Acid Queen in Tommy or her appearance on the bulk of Frank Zappa’s Overnight Sensation. But the story of her early rise to fame, and the oppressive influence her musical mentor, husband and onstage partner Ike Turner had on her personal and professional life is deftly explored. As is her fight for independence, recording the monumental Phil Spector production “River Deep, Mountain High,” and her 1980s global resurgence.

Directed and produced by Alex Winter, with Gale Anne Hurd and Glen Zipper also on board as producers, Mass Effect will be a gripping, frightening and, at times, hilarious look at the video-streaming platform, examining its humble origins within a pizzeria attic, and how it went on to become the largest media platform in history.
While looking at cultural phenomena like cat videos, the doc will also dig into weighty issues associated with YouTube. Offering access to key players in technology, business, media and politics, it will specifically tackle such subjects as surveillance, algorithmic capitalism, online radicalization, and the spread of fake news.

The latest from T.J.Martin and Daniel Lindsay, directors of “Undefeated” and “LA 92,” “Tina” looks like another documentary that came off of a factory line, complete with the usual panning shots of contact sheets, dramatic zooms into rolling tapes, cross-cutting between audio interviews and their published print versions, melodramatic score cues doing their best to emulate Philip Glass.

Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin co-directed the sports documentary Undefeated in 2011, and their Berlin Film Festival Special Gala, Tina, could have shared the same title. While this is set in the world of music, its emphasis is on the resilience, survival and comeback of its subject, singer Tina Turner. Featuring a contemporary interview with Turner herself, the HBO Documentary Films title mixes talking heads with archive interviews and footage to paint a vivid picture of a musical legend. This is clearly an authorized biography — it’s executive produced by Turner’s husband, Erwin Bach — but it has enough verve and insight to entertain and enlighten.

In the first look at the HBO documentary film “Tina,” Tina Turner recalls losing her mother when she was young, having watched her look out the window of their home until one day she wasn’t there and never came back.
Turner explains how this memory shaped her and helped the music legend overcome hardship throughout her career.

HBO has released the first teaser trailer for “Tina,” a new documentary about legendary musician Tina Turner. Drawing on a wealth of never-before-seen footage spanning 60 years, audio tapes, personal photos, and new interviews with Turner herself, “Tina” promises an intimate and fresh look at the notoriously private icon. The broad strokes of Turner’s life have been pop culture fodder before, from her 1986 autobiography “I, Tina,” and the 1993 film “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” which drew from the book and starred Angela Bassett in an Oscar-nominated turn as the singer. However, “Tina” represents the first authorized feature documentary on Turner.
Turner first rocketed to stardom in the 1960s and ’70s, performing alongside her then-husband Ike. Off-stage, the partnership was violent, though the extent of the abuse wasn’t known until after the pair divorced and Tina began to speak publicly about her experiences. “Tina” will prominently feature the...

The Oscars competition in the Best Documentary Feature category has more than 200 eligible films this year for this first time ever, due largely to rule changes that made it easier for nonfiction films to qualify in the year of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The previous record for entries, set in 2017, was 170.
But rule changes have long been standard in the Oscars documentary category, particularly in the last two or three decades. Often, they involve...
