Quotes

  • Rodrigo Borgia : Who killed my son?

    Cesare Borgia : God.

Rodrigo Borgia : God is not so ruthless.

Cesare Borgia : He killed his own son. Why would he not kill yours?

  • Rodrigo Borgia : We command you to go to Spain and fulfill your pastoral duties.

Cesare Borgia : And what if, Father, I said I no longer wished to be archbishop? Nor wear the red robe of a cardinal?

Rodrigo Borgia : We would, like a deaf man, stare blankly as your mouth moves.

  • [first lines]

Site Excavator : [uncovering a figure]  Hey! Hey!

Rodrigo Borgia : [shift to viewing of the excavated sculpture]  The Laocoon, a relic from the magnificent days of ancient Rome. A cautionary tale, the high priest Laocoon tried to warn the Trojans about the large wooden horse. Fear the Greeks, even bearing gifts. The goddess Athena, as revenge, sent a serpent, which rose from the sea to destroy Laocoon and his sons. The Trojans believed that Laocoon's death proved him wrong. God may destroy a man, but the man may still be right.

  • Pedro Calderón : [taking his leave]  Pray for me, sweet Lucrezia.

Lucrezia Borgia : I was almost happy!

Rodrigo Borgia : Lust is not happiness, child. Being faithful to God's truth is.

  • Rodrigo Borgia : We will bury the past in the rich soil of tomorrow.

  • [last lines]

Rodrigo Borgia : The ancients had many gods, all cruel. How wise of us to consolidate them into one supreme being. And how foolish we are to love God - to love so deeply something as brief and fragile as life.

Rodrigo Borgia : This should be as it was, not as we wish it to be.

    [breaks off marble arms]

Rodrigo Borgia : Bury the statue where it will never be found.
