A little pat but the delivery carries the tone

I'm not sure what the deal is with the Bloomingdales connection at the start of this short, but I'm guessing it is their own funding programme and if so then fair play. This short is about a romantic relationship between an Asian man and an African-American woman, a pairing one doesn't see very often. This seems to be the point of this short film, indeed the title is a response to the standard question asked to someone dating an Asian man. The film follows them through a few interactions but rather than build a realistic picture it shows snippets of romance to make this the impression we get while cementing the images of race within the two actors.

It is a little pat to say the least but I still liked it. Jenkins' may not have a lot of substance in here but his direction is excellent, not to mention the editing from Brian Gaynor. The two actors are good together although both of them are a little bit obvious in their throws of romance. Lin and Cotton are both cute in their own ways but they never felt like real people – so they fitted the film but didn't have too much to do.

Overall this is a cute little short film that is a little pat but more or less works because the delivery of it carries the tone.

Weak enough

Warning: Spoilers
"Tall Enough" is an American live action short film from 2009, so this one has its 10th anniversary this year. It runs for slightly under seven minutes and that includes a minute of credits as well, so it is really not a long movie by any means. It is all about romance here as we witness a couple talk to each other and talk to others about each other. The title is a reference to a response the girl gives to her mom when asked about the man's height. This question probably only arises because he is Asian, which may be a bit racist to be honest. But it doesn't matter really. What coujnts is the cuteness factor and this one is virtually non-existent to be honest. The two did not have great chemistry, not even in their more intimate moments. They tried to make up for that through the fact that here we have an interracial couple, rare combination of Black girl, Asian man, but this is only enough to the untrained eye to make up for the weaknesses and emptiness. Overall, it is an extremely forgettable movie and this one would not be known at all, completely forgotten now hadn't it been for Barry Jenkins, the Oscar-winning filmmaker who wrote and directed the film. He was actually fairly prolific in short filmmaking during the stage of his career when he was not famous yet. This one here does not make me curious at all about his early works. Thumsb down. Not recommended.
