Steven Spielberg’s Jaws left an indelible mark on cinema upon release in 1975, ushering in the summer blockbuster as we know it. Like its many taglines, Jaws also made people afraid to go into the water thanks to a newfound fear of man-eating sharks. And the film’s massive box office success created a tsunami of copycats, launching the “sharksploitation” subgenre.
But emulating Jaws only goes so far, and the subgenre has been forced to constantly find inventive new ways to reimagine the shark horror movie. One surefire but cheeky way to stand out from an increasingly crowded subgenre is to add novelty to the concept, often by altering the setting. If people are too afraid to go into the water, the shark should go to the people.
Luckily, there’s no shortage of weird, wacky settings that dramatically alter the formula…

Shark movies are a dime a dozen, especially with schlock like Jersey Shore: Shark Attack, Sand Sharks, Ghost Shark, and so much more. But what happens when Tommy Wiseau, the visionary director of The Room, takes aim at the ocean’s most fearsome predator? Tommy Wiseau has released a new trailer for Big Shark, which is somehow the first movie he’s directed since the release of The Room twenty years ago.
The Big Shark trailer cuts back and forth between shots of New Orleans with two boxers fighting in a gym, all while the text reads, “You can Run. You can Hide. But that won’t save you. The world’s most vicious hunter has come to the bayou and only wants one thing… blood.” The film stars Tommy Wiseau as Patrick, Isaiah Laborde as Tim, and Greg Sestero as Georgie, three firefighters who must save New Orleans from a killer shark.

Hulk Hogan’s daughter, Brooke Hogan, showed off a stunning monokini as she let fans know about something she doesn’t particularly enjoy, and ironically it’s all the work that goes into making photoshoots happen.
With that, she posed in a sizzling black one-piece and black high heels strapped onto her feet, as she posed with her head arched back and one leg bent to place a foot on a chair.
The former TV star and wrestling personality kept one hand on her hip and the other holding her blonde locks as she leaned her head back for a provocative pose.
Along with the gorgeous photo, taken in a bare-bones room with white walls, she gave fans all the reasons she doesn’t like participating in photoshoots.

Opens with an oddly “fake” looking scene that feels like it was shot entirely on a green screen soundstage – which for all I know might be true, especially given the copious amounts of CGI featured in the film as a whole… Yes, we’re in CGI shark territory (combined with stock footage – how very The Asylum of this film) in this one folks!
The Requin, aka From Below, stars Alicia Silverstone [Sidebar; who would have thought we’d ever see Alicia Silverstone in a shark movie? Seriously?] as Jaelyn who, along with her husband Kyle (James Tupper) are on holiday in Vietnam following Jaelyn’s miscarriage. Of course, being a shark movie we know things aren’t going to go according to plan for the couple. Kyle gets injured whilst swimming, his blood pouring into the ocean waters like some sort of obvious foreshadowing, whilst Jaelyn has flashbacks to her miscarriage.

Woah woah woah… 6 heads? Last time I took a look at this franchise the shark only had three heads! Ok, so a jokes a joke but a 6-headed shark seriously? Plus, whatever happened to the four-headed version? It seems The Asylum went from three heads to five without a thought for a four-headed version, but then sharks have pretty big foreheads already don’t they? [insert noticeable groan here]. Millions of Americans will flock to the beach this summer for sun-filled days of ocean fun. And while a sandy weekend getaway can be the ultimate relaxing vacation, there is one major concern many beachgoers share while swimming in the ocean - sharks. According to experts at the International Shark Attack File, last year there were 98 confirmed unprovoked shark attacks on humans. The majority of these attacks were considered "hit and run" bites that resulted in minor injury. But six attacks, worldwide, in 2015 were fatal. Experts say it is important for beachgoers to remember that humans are visitors of the...

Ever since Steven Spielberg's Jaws redefined the blockbuster back in the summer of 1975, sharks have been a big screen mainstay, terrifying film fans and spawning a horror sub-genre that's usually thrifty in budget but big on ludicrousness.
As Jaws celebrates its 40th birthday today (June 20), take a dive into B-movie heaven and fish out some of cinema's craziest shark-based cinema offerings.
1. Deep Blue Sea (1999)
A Jaws movie in all but name, this souped-up action-horror from Renny Harlin boasts a bigger budget than every other film on this list combined, but a script that rivals them all for hilarity.
The setup? A group of scientists in an underwater research base conduct experiments on sharks in a bid to find a cure for Alzheimer's. Boasting a cast that includes everyone from Thomas Jane to Samuel L Jackson (with LL Cool J as a parrot-loving chef), this is big and dumb - but most importantly,...

He’s fought to the death with Satan, Jean-Claude Van Damme, The Joker, and Richard Nixon. Now Michael Jai White braves The Asylum to star in their unimaginatively monikered mockbuster of the RoboCop remake: Android Cop.
I so hope there’s a scene where he yells, “Leave, bitches!”
Now you might be thinking that with a title like Android Cop and a release date not at all timed to coincide with the release of RoboCop, this is going to be an out-and-out rip-off about Michael Jai White getting turned into a cyborg policeman. You would be wrong. Despite its title this is one of those Asylum mockbusters that’s more thematic in nature than a plot-for-plot knock-off like they used to do in the old days. Reading the plot synopsis makes Android Cop sound less like a RoboCop rip-off and more like the premise of a 20-year-old Pm Entertainment flick:

Just when you thought it was safe to... actually, it's probably not safe to do anything anymore without getting your ass bitten off, thanks to SyFy's seemingly bottomless well of shark-based cinematic insanity. If you thought Sharknado was the final word in weather-themed monster shark scenarios (and a lot of people did – that flick was a hit), then you've underestimated the makers of Avalanche Sharks (and to answer your next question, it might get retitled Sharkalanche), who are apparently merging the concept of 2009's Malibu Shark Attack with a frosty variation on 2011's Sand Sharks. Plus, it looks like the finned fiend comes from outer space this time. The trailer (which debuted this week at Fangoria) pretty much speaks for itself... so bundle up, grab onto something and press play!

Thanks to Fangoria, we now have the trailer for "Avalanche Sharks," which continues the obsessions of making ridiculous shark movies. This one happens to be a sequel to "Sand Sharks" that was released recently and had sharks attacking people in sand. Check out the trailer for "Avalanche Sharks" below. Plot: After a massive avalanche, the staff of Twin Pines Ski Resort begin to receive reports of missing people and creatures that move beneath the snow. As the body count slowly begins to pile up, the management tries to cover up the situation, which eventually leads to disaster on their busiest day of the year: Bikini Snow Day. "Avalanche Sharks" is directed by Scott Wheeler (Transmorphers) from a script by Keith Shaw (Malibu Shark Attack). Trailer:...

The Asylum is the studio behind such cheap rip-offs as "Transmorphers" and "Snakes on a Train." It's now back with "Jack the Giant Killer," which is a rip-off of Bryan Singer's upcoming "Jack the Giant Slayer." And today we have a trailer for the new movie, showing that it also borrows from Guillermo Del Toro's "Pacific Rim." Check it out below. Plot: A giant beanstalk brings Jack to a land in the clouds filled with snarling, evil beasts. When the creatures make their way to Earth, Jack must figure out how to get back down before they destroy his hometown and everyone in it. "Jack the Giant Killer" is directed by Mark Atkins (Sand Sharks), and stars Jane March (Color of Night) and Ben Cross (Chariots of Fire). It's set to be released on VOD and DVD/Blu-ray on March 12th, just eleven days after Singer's "Jack the Giant Slayer" hits theaters.

The Asylum’s Jack the Giant Killer likely won’t prompt legal action from Bryan Singer’s similarly titled blockbuster since it appears to be set in the early 20th century, the giants are dinosaur-like monsters, and I’m unaware of any version of “Jack & the Beanstalk” that includes a giant robot.
Jane March (Color of Night), Ben Cross (Chariots of Fire), and newcomer Jamie Atkins star in writer-director Mark Atkins’ (Sand Sharks) Jack the Giant Killer, coming to VOD/DVD/Blu-ray on March 12th. That’s 11 days after Jack the Giant Slayer beanstalks theaters worldwide.
So how is The Asylum version of this classic fairy tale different?

Written by Mark Atkins, whose work you may know from films such as Sand Sharks, Battle of Los Angeles and Princess of Mars, and directed by Joe Knee (Cult), Dragon Wasps is best described as the ultimate cross breed between timely jungle thrillers like Predator and Anaconda and gigantic critter delights such as Eight Legged Freaks and Lake Placid, in other words it’s a relentless giant-creature action hybrid that blows Roger Corman right out of the water!

The Grand Illusion It's interesting to see the film with spine #1 over at the Criterion Collection coming to Blu-ray for the first time from another company as Studio Canal has brought over their previously released European version of the excellent La Grande Illusion to Blu-ray here in the States. I have not yet had a chance to watch this release but word is that it looks great and the supplemental material looks strong. I previously owned this title only in my [amazon asin="B000I5YUE4" text="The Essential Art House - 50 Years of Janus Films"] collection, but I love how Studio Canal and Lionsgate have teamed to continue to bring some classic foreign titles home to the U.S. Although, compared to the number of titles they've released overseas, they still have a lot of catching up to do.

There are lots of wacky b-movies with the word "shark" in the title: Sharks in Venice; 2-Headed Shark Attack; Sand Sharks; Psycho Shark; Dino Shark... you name it, and sharks have either become it or attacked it. But this is the first time in the annals of super-chintzy Jaws knock-offs that a swarm of sharks has taken aim at (gasp) reality TV show "stars." No, this cheap and goofy SyFy Channel flick is not actually related to the Jersey Shore series, but it does take place in a very slight satire of said program, and despite a typical laundry list of obvious low-budget problems, Jersey Shore Shark Attack earns some points for self-aware goofiness, a few surprisingly funny moments, and the appearance of several lovely...

The low budget horror comedy from director Mark Atkins features Corin Nemec, Gina Holden ('Saw 3D'), Eric Scott Woods, Vanessa Lee Evigan and Julie Berman along with stocky hottie Brooke Hogan (below). Hogan, who not only stars in this straight-to-video shark related project, will also be seen next in 'The Asylum's '2-Headed Shark Attack' along with Carmen Electra. Check out the ridiculously familiar DVD artwork below and make sure you click on Brookes sweet ass to enjoy the trailer too....

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water... Who needs water when a prehistoric species of sand-swimming sharks begins prowling the beach? Sand Sharks is poised to be the schlockbuster of the summer.
Corin Nemec (Mansquito) and Brooke Hogan (2-Headed Shark Attack) star in Mark Atkins’ horror comedy Sand Sharks, a movie that has “Syfy original movie” written all over it yet looks to be bypassing that channel altogether. Not sure why. Might have something to do with the movie being more comedy than horror; Syfy movie execs, by all accounts, have a weird thing about how their movies should never be intentionally funny.
Synopsis:
Jimmy Green, a prodigal party boy, is throwing the spring break festival of a lifetime on the island of White Sands. Little do the hundreds of teenage party-goers know, an underwater earthquake has cracked open a crater beneath the ocean’s surface.

This has to be one of the biggest MPAA rating bulletins I've ever had to put together with 11 prominent films getting new ratings or amended ratings. Included is Julie Delpy's 2 Days in New York co-starring Chris Rock, Pixar's Brave, the upcoming dramedy Celeste and Jesse Forever, Marjane Satrapi's Chicken with Plums, William Friedkin's Killer Joe which gets an updated Nc-17 rating reason, an R-rating for Ridley Scott's Prometheus, Tyler Perry's Madea's Witness Protection, the horror collaboration V/H/S, The Words starring Zoe Saldana and Bradley Cooper, the R-rated rom-com Ruby Sparks and Sylvester Stallone's newly dated Bullet to the Head. Like I said, it is packed and if you're wondering what that film called Kiara the Brave is considering its similar rating to Pixar's Brave, just click here and bask in the glory of some of the best animation you've ever seen. Piranhaconda isn’t the only new b-movie creature trailer dropping today. Gigantic fire-spewing wasps terrorize soldiers in the trailer for Dragon Wasps. Is it wrong I think this looks more fun than Piranhaconda?
Typically wasps are known for their stingers. Stingers look to be the least of your worries here what with these dragon wasps earning their namesake with their ability to project fire like flying flamethrowers.

To encourage adolescents everywhere to pick up a copy you may want to check out the sweet selection of bikini clad babes below in the group of screen captures courtesy of Joblo's Movie Hotties. There's sexy sunbathing, skinny dipping lesbian kisses and Brooke and Carmen rocking their bods. And the shark you ask? Sadly just one glimpse of a single fin in the distance. Stars: Corin Nemec, Gina Holden, Julie Berman, Brooke Hogan, Nick Hogan, Vanessa Lee Evigan | Written by Cameron Larson | Directed by Mark Atkins
When you get a movie to review called Sand Sharks you can already guess what is coming. This is going to be one of those crazy shark films that use dodgy CGI and bad acting but just don’t seem to care. They don’t make these films to be good, if anything they ham it up to insane levels and just go with it. You’ll either groan or just go with it and love it. I’m one of those people that usually groan but I gave Sand Sharks a chance.
The stories for these movies are pretty barebones at best but I’d say this one actually tried to some extent, being that it stole the Jaws idea and runs with it with...

The search for the bottom of the creature feature barrel continues with “Sand Sharks”, a film which explores the long pondered philosophical question as to what would happen if sharks could in fact swim through sand. Boldly tackling this controversial issue are director Mark Atkins (also responsible for the charming “Battle of Los Angeles”) and writers Cameron Larson (“Mysterious Island”, “Alligator X”) and Joe Benkis (“Shadow People”), with an intriguing cast of television stars and vaguely familiar genre faces that includes Corin Nemec (“Supernatural”), Brooke Hogan (“Brooke Knows Best”), Gina Holden (“Saw 3D”), Julie Berman (“General Hospital”), Nick Hogan (“Hogan Knows Best”) and Vanessa Lee Evigan (“Journey To The Centre Of The Earth”). For the brave or curious, “Sand Sharks” hits region 2 DVD in January through Chelsea Films. The plot, such as it is, proudly follows the time honoured “Jaws” formula pretty much to the letter, kicking off with a...

If you’re the sort of seedy individual who likes to spend your free time watching low-budget monster movies featuring small clusters of has-beens and semi-celebrities, then director Mark Atkins’ upcoming creature feature “Sand Sharks” is definitely the sort of thing you need to keep a close eye on. Needless to say, I’ll be watching this nonsense as soon as I possibly can. I’m sure you already knew that. After watching movies like Jaws and Shark Night 3D we all know it's not safe to swim in the water with sharks. What if sharks were able to swim in the sand and the water? I guess we are about to find out in a new horror/ sci-fi comedy movie hitting the American Film Market this week called Sand Sharks. The film stars Gina Holden (Saw 3D, Final Destination 3), Vanessa Lee Evigan (Journey to the Center of the Earth), Eric Scott Woods (Dark Metropolis) and Corin Nemec (3-3-3), Julie Berman and Nick Hogan (Hulk Hogans son).
