Classic cartoon lovers rejoice! That fantastic feline superstar returns to UK movie screens in just a few weeks. As the Hoyt Curtin TV theme proclaims, “…but above everything, he’s the most tip top…Top Cat!”. Tc, as close friends call him, did indeed debut on American TV screens on the then fledgling ABC network in September of 1961 (talk about your nine lives!). This show, along with “The Jetsons” and “Jonny Quest” was an attempt by animation studio Hanna-Barbera to replicate the prime time success of that “modern stone-age family “The Flintstones” just a year or so before. Unfortunately Tc was not the rating smash that Fred and company were, so only one season (30 half hour episodes) were produced. But the kitty con-artist and his pals endured as a Saturday morning staple, then a syndicated smash. As beloved as the show was in its native Us, “Top Cat” was an even bigger hit overseas,...

Top Cat, the most effectual, is the star of the show in the first trailer for Andres Couturier’s upcoming animated feature, Top Cat Begins.
A tip of the hat to the original 60s cartoon in more ways than one, Jason Harris (Rio 2) lends his vocal chords to the titular feline, headlining a crew of alley cats comprised of Fancy-Fancy, Spook, Choo-Choo, along with Brain and Benny. It is, at its core, an origins story to Hanna-Barbera’s beloved trickster, shedding light on how Harris’ Top Cat crossed paths with Benny before forming their famous gang of felines.
First released in Mexico late last year, Top Cat Begins is also a prequel to 2011 animated flick Top Cat: The Movie, though early reviews for Couturier’s cheeky feature weren’t too kind.

Interview Duncan Bowles 13 Mar 2014 - 06:29
Duncan catches up with the star of Bullet and Machete to talk about stunts, dancing, and Miss Piggy...
The last but one answer in this interview has a slight spoiler for Muppets Most Wanted.
If there’s one thing I discovered from our chat with Danny Trejo, it’s that he laughs a lot. For an actor who’s made a career out of playing bad asses whose actions speak louder than words, it was a strange thing to hear him so openly chuckling – when our call was connected I asked how he was doing and he replied “Great, we were just talking about Mel Brooks and Blazing Saddles – probably before your time, but it’s really funny!” and what followed was one of the most entertaining interviews I’ve ever done.
We were lucky enough to get a good amount of Mr Trejo’s time,...

Today's bulletin is another light one in terms of bigger name films as only Only God Forgives and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters immediately catch the eye. Certainly a few people will see Uwe Boll's Assault on Wall Street on accident, Craig Zisk's The English Teacher starring Julianne Moore, Greg Kinnear, Michael Angarano and Lily Collins will be recognized by some as it is already in theaters and while I'm not interested in it, I'm sure some of you will be looking for the animated Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox. However, with Nicolas Winding Refn's Only God Forgives, which I just saw here in Cannes a few hours ago and will have a review for you soon, you're getting the anticipated R-rating and the continuation of the Percy Jackson story will continue one notch higher on the rating scale than where it began with Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.

Top Cat
Stars (the voices of): Jason Harris, Chris Edgerly, Melissa Disney, Ben Diskin, Bill Lobley | Written by Kevin Seccia, Timothy McKeon | Directed by Alberto Mar
I hope I’m not going to negate any of my assiduously collated street credibility, but when I was little I used to really like Top Cat. Looking back, I believe I’m correct in saying that it was a reasonably witty and funny programme and it’s not simply nostalgia that’s influencing these fond memories. I remember my sister and I used to watch a Top Cat VHS that we won in a competition run by Little Chef pretty much on loop some days. So when I was invited to attend the preview screening of Tc’s big screen debut, I was cautiously excited about it. Obviously, the film is aimed very much at youngsters, but surely there’d be plenty...

Rating: 1.5 out of 5 stars
With Top Cat just recently celebrating the 50th anniversary of his television show’s premiere, it is an apt time for Hanna-Barbera to indulge in a little nostalgia for their feisty feline creation. Putting out bare bones slop like this, however, is not the way to do it. Inside of 90 minutes, director Alberto Mar nearly undoes any and all goodwill, managing to make us forget most of what is fun and lovable about the titular character amid a lame-brained script delivered in the most appalling 3D presentation imaginable.
It would be nice to say that the spunky characters and zany situations are what sticks out to the viewer in Top Cat: The Movie, but audiences will instead likely be left agape at the garish, laughably substandard 3D textures applied to what has always been a perfectly functional 2D outing. While Top Cat himself looks great, as...
