gore but also too much of talking
trashgang27 October 2011
This is again a hard one to review. The director, Thomas Newman, did most of the job himself, he edited this flick on Mac and used Protools for sound editing. He also shot the movie himself with one camera using around 350 shots. For that part alone I would give him a big cheer. He also wrote the script and that wasn't that good. Let me explain. I can understand that when you make a low budget flick you have to watch out for special effects because they use a lot of the budget. But this one clocks in at 98 minutes and if he should have made it a bit shorter then it would have been much better. It starts of so promising but after the old couple has turned into zombies and we move 6 months further we start to know the leading actors. It's supposed to be funny but it's so cheap to laugh with a fart. But I'm not into American humour. Most of the comedies coming out there weren't for me funny.

Let's say that almost 60 minutes of this flick is about joking and smoking pot and having fun and meeting a chick and again having fun and having beer and pot and talking much, way too much. After a while you have seen it all about the talking that you eager to see the zombies.

Once the zombies are out it's gore galore and indeed, the red stuff flows and all parts and heads of the zombies are flying around. The way they have been attacked by or friends did remind me of Peter Jackson's Braindead. But there again, some shots do have the latex and syrup but other effects are CGI and you can easily spot that.

But at the end of the day zombiegeeks will love it due the bloody and messy shots but for me the beginning was okay, then too much drivel to end with gory shots. Just watch until the end, in between the end credits there is a surprise.

Gore 3/5 Nudity 0,5/5 Story 2/5 Effects 3/5 Comedy 1/5

Painfully unimaginative
hellholehorror5 October 2017
It looked and sounded bad. Painfully unimaginative. The only bit I enjoyed was the montage of them getting drunk after getting stoned. This gives stoner films a bad name. They could have done something great with it by taking it way over-the-top but they didn't, they made it dull.

KEEP IT SIMPLE
nogodnomasters24 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
A zombie outbreak is caused by CG meteors. Two stoners (Jy Harris, Mark Wynn) survive and hook up with a woman (Simone Bailly). They travel to a place broadcast on the radio to be a safe zone. That's pretty much it. Plenty of stoner "humor". Acting is bad, the dialouge is idiotic. The plot is simple and stupid. The blood effects are mostly "Troma" style.

This film is supposed to be humorous, but it was just plain stupid. I had high hopes for it in the beginning, but once our Beethoven loving Hummel painter scene was over, the movie tanked.

Parental Guide: F-bomb, no sex. Nudity (Tanzyn Ambrose, Rose Greenwood)

Creative But A Little Bit Dull
empatmk28 April 2017
This is a zombie comedy movie but it was gore enough with blood splattered frequently, and not so bad special effects. The problem was in some scenes had long dialogues, and it make the film becoming lack of interest. But thumbs up for the movie idea, and zombie movie fans gotta see this film.

really really bad
cherrywaves-250-91451227 December 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Possibly the worst movie of all time. I feel robbed of my six dollars I spent to hire the disc. I would suggest that anyone over the age of twelve years of age should disregard this "film" completely. Unless you are into unrealistic glorification of Marijuanna use this could be a real entertaining 90 minutes for you. The script was so terrible that the fact that one man, with one camera, obviously put a lot of work into this disaster-piece, was still unable to gain respect from any one person in the room full of people in which I forced myself to endure this film with. All in all I genuinely feel robbed of .....my time, my money, brain cells and maybe even dignity suggesting that it may be worth watching when i seen it on the film store shelf.

Yeah, this was just... unique...

Wow, this was bad on a scale that can't even be measured.

"Bong of the Dead" is without a doubt amongst the top 10 of worst movies I have had to suffer through - or at least partially through, as I gave up on this nonsense after 20 minutes into the movie, where it was all teenage shenanigans and just downright waste of time happening on the screen. And a movie have to be extraordinarily bad before I actually turn it off.

I must admit that a movie about two potheads sitting around growing weed plants using mashed up zombies didn't really appeal to me in the least. Nor did the horrible and silly acting appeal to me in any way.

The movie started out alright, campy but with some potential for a zombie spoof, but then enter the two potheads, and the movie just went from bad to worse in record time.

I am sure that there is an audience out there for this particular movie. I just wasn't part of that particular audience, that's fore sure. Zombies and weed is just a combo that doesn't go hand in hand.

Hats off to director Thomas Newman for making this movie though and seeing it through. He did create something that is somewhat of an acquired taste. But as a zombie aficionado, and not much fan of stoner movies, then "Bong of the Dead" didn't really get me high.

To Watch or Not to Watch the Question Here
Tweetienator21 July 2018
I bought this movie after its release on DVD and well, you get what you get, if some dudes smoke brains of the undead to get high and higher ;)

This movie is not a B class movie but imo a C type but got some merits: lots of fun, some funny and weird ideas, some nice gore and the acting and production is not of that kind of "some buddies with a Canon digi-cam and a funny idea make a movie and the buddy who happens to be a designer makes a nice movie poster".

But, can I, or dare I really to recommend the Bong to you!?

Yes, but only if:

a) you like trash, and lots of it b) you like zombies c) you like some more zombies d) you like zombie comedies e) you find Cheech und Chong still funny.

Good, if Bong of the Dead hits your "neural fun-system", unwatchable if it does not, I guess...

Why be so down on this movie!!!
jb41623-96-8330031 October 2011
OK, this is not zombie-land which was great, but I would love to see anyone try and make a movie with 5 grand, there was some fantastic sfx especially at the beginning, and any "TRUE" Zombie fan will look at this as what it is, I am 50 years old and absolutely loved it, and I can guarantee that when George Romero see's this he will say the same, it is not the greatest movie out there but nether was Evil Dead ( which I own about 15 different copies) and people look at this for the great job that was done with the money that was spent. This is my first review. So those that I offend by this, TOO BAD!!! anyone that has a sense for the tradition of a director/producer busting his but, trying to give a piece of his horror and comedy, I stand up and applaud him, give me 24 million and I or anybody can buy (make) a good movie. now just set back slap that DVD in and enjoy...Thomas Newman you did a great job, and no I was not paid or even know this man but I do respect him and his movie.

Bong of the dead -- exactly what you want
davidlmarks9 February 2012
This movie has a happy slapstick feel to it, Cheech and Chong meet the undead. It was funny, it was heartwarming (sometimes a little too much)-- and it had an awesome ending that included perhaps one of the most awesome killing machines in recent zombie-killing history.

The two stoner leads (Edwin and Tommy) were perfect boneheads-- but boneheads with a mission. There is also one of the hottest chicks since Tomb Raider (wait 'til she gets all gussied up in leathers)... and it is pure and simple entertainment.

I understand the film was produced for $5000, and that in itself is reason enough to watch it-- but don't watch it for that! Watch it because its funny and clever and the zombie effects are first rate (by veteran Mike Fields). The final climactic scene is awesome... oh, and watch past the trailers for a taste of things to come.

Review of zombie movie Bong of the Dead
rtwhyte29 March 2011
Warning: Spoilers
We have had rash of "this movie was done on this really low budget" movies as of late and the problem is most come off as just that - a bad movie with no budget. Selling a bad movie that way doesn't make the movie any better.

With that comes the $5000 zombie movie Bong of the Dead by Thomas Newman. When I watch a zombie movie I expect a few simple things - good zombies, plausible storyline, and great zombie deaths. Anyone can shoot a zombie in the head but it's the movies that take the time to be creative in this niche that stand out. Couple that with a good story and you'll get my attention. Most low-budget movies might hit one of those expectations but rarely all. Bong of the Dead hit them all and shucks the recent trend of low budget=poor movie.

It's clear that Thomas Newman put thousands of hours into his creation. It just doesn't come off as a $5000 movie. With the special effects wonder-kid Mike Fields goring up the movie and Newman's directing the movie left me feeling entertained.

I was first turned on to the movie when I saw a trailer for it featuring a ramped up pickup truck sporting a trio of lawnmowers. Newman's movie doesn't disappoint here with some great zombie-mowing action. Fans of gallons of blood will not want to miss this. This scene kicks off the climax of the film and zombie pieces are flying everywhere. Our hapless potheads and their new hot female ally dish out the pain.

The sick factor was also plugged with a rather disgusting display of zombie on zombie cannibalism - I have a feeling this scene won't make it into the American market for just who gets eaten.

Jy Harris playing Tommy Peart and Mark Wynn who plays Edwin Peredo are the two stoner buddies who discover a miracle use for zombie brains that suits their 'green' side. They set off in search of more zombie fertilizer only to find themselves over their heads. They find themselves at the end of Leah Kroaker's shotgun (played by the sexy Simone Bailly) and the fun ensues.

Pot and zombies do go together. Don't let the $5000 total budget turn you off this movie. The quality is there in spades and Thomas Newman and Mike Fields made this zombie movie fan happy for an hour and a half.

Great example of film making at its finest.
Jman-the111 January 2012
Warning: Spoilers
First of all id like to say a big thank you to the the weird guy with big earrings and a stupid multicoloured haircut at the local videoezy. He recommended this movie to me while i was there last night and i feel he needs some credit.

As soon as i got home i got my massive mission impossible 2 combo cup and filled it to the brim with a little thing i like to poetry juice which is basically mango nectar and pineapple rind with a hint of Labradoodle DNA and an imported industrial sized box of pop corn of which i picked up on my way home from a roadside vendor named Deshawn Landry if you would like to get in contact with him his number is 1800 get-popped, then took the DVD out of the cheap plastic case that the store gave to me and handled it with extreme care because i knew already that it would be great just by judging the disc print. when in the VCR the DVD didn't actually work so i decided to change it and put it in my DVD player but then it didn't register so i worked out that i had to turn the DVD player on first.

i have a formula for a great film and here it is budget x number of cast members + the amount of letters the director has in his last name / the average rating on the sydney morning herald newspaper x the shoe size of the sound editors left foot = the perfect movie. and safe to say that bong of the dead equates out. but correct me if I'm wrong.

the opening scene set it all for me and the brilliant acting by the old couple was something to behold, the character introduction wasn't needed as Edwin and tommy were perfectly in sync with each other and the set explained it all for me. the story line is better than what i expect from a zombie movie and to tell you the truth it could stand up to any blockbuster like happy feet 2 or the Muppet's go to Manhattan. i was always wondering who or what was coming next and was biting my nails the whole way through (partly because i had long nails and i had forgotten where i put my nail clipper) but the character of Alex i found to be the best because no one was guessing that zombies had different sexual tendencies particularly because they lack any form of genitalia whatsoever. but they must.

Leah is very well played she comes across as cold and dark at first but with a bit light drinking and a large amount of illegal plant substances. she lightens up a bit and becomes one of the center points of the whole movie. the director has done extremely well with only the small budget he had to work with although the special effects were A class and i don't know how he actually did it.

towards the end it never got old and i found that the movie could have gone on for another hour and it still would have been entertaining. i loved the ending and anything with a ford f250 truck and multiple lawn mowers its going to be a good one. unless its a lawnmowing service then it may not be as entertaining as id hoped.

i plead you if you are at the video store and see this on the shelf rent it and watch it i think it will be the best hour and thirty minutes of the week for you providing you don't fall asleep first and don't intake any red bull(all rights reserved red bull and its logo are property of the Pepsi Company and is used accordingly) its an example of film making at its finest.

P.S the catering staff need a big thank you because without them the cast and crew wouldn't get the necessary nutrition they needed for the acrobatic stunts and intense dialog.

Great "B" Zombie Movie
nathanf115 July 2012
Zombie movie fans need to watch this. Sure the acting and dialogue is pretty terrible, but I found it to be highly entertaining. It's unbelievable to me that this movie was made for a mere $15,000. The special effects and zombie makeup are great considering the low budget, and Thomas Newman introduces some new ideas (at least ones I've never seen in zombie entertainment) that I found to be quite inventive. I thought that the "stoner" aspect would end up ruling this flick a bit more, but it was secondary to zombies, which I enjoyed as well. If you do take the time to check it out, make sure you watch it through the credits for even more fun.
