Athens Burning review
eric-55-69408616 May 2011
This film is a dark comedy type documentary with a surprising depth of historical information, in a quick edit format, and covers the subject matter very well. The "characters" in this film (actually HD video) are the City of Athens, the bands, venues, and values that make up the music scene there (and nationally from there). The development of those characters leading up to the climactic burning of the Theatre drives the film. You can tell the film makers have a deep connection to the subject matter, and, indeed, they are Athenians themselves. This film helps raise money to revive the amazing historic art deco landmark of the Georgia Theatre. This is a must-see for those interested in the performance music industry, and people interested in Athens, Ga. as a city.

Great film with some really cool cameos

I learned a lot about the local Athens music scene by watching this. It was informative, shot well and entertaining. Had some awesome interviews and cool footage of some of my favorite bands of all time! There were some really big names in this film and I was surprised to learn about a connection between Billy Bob Thornton and this town and one of its bands. Such an interesting building and to be burned to the ground forever would have been devastating to Athens. So glad it's back in action and even better than before while still keeping the same feel as the old theater. It's an awesome venue in a great music town. This documentary illustrates the story quite well.
