- A new team assembles to restart the Quantum Leap project. Lead physicist Ben Song takes an unauthorized leap into 1985 as the team scrambles to figure out what happened and how to get him back.
- Physicist Ben Song goes into the quantum leap accelerator... and vanishes. He appears in another man's body in 1985 Philadelphia and finds himself in the middle of a robbery and a high-speed car chase. His only companion is a hologram from his own time, Addison, whom Ben can't remember because of amnesia induced by the leap.—Gislef
- A woman working on the old Quantum Leap computers calls Dr. Ben Song. Ben is at the apartment where a party is going on, and he tells his girlfriend Addison Augustine that he loves parties. However, he suggests that the two of them go off. Jenn, their head of security, joins them and they call over another member of their team, Ian Wright, who offers to talk to them about his quantum simulations. Ben points out that they agreed not to talk about work for one night. Another man, Herbert "Magic' Williams, who is also a member of their team, joins them.
Ben would rather not have anyone paying attention to him, and Ziggy and Magic get everyone's attention and Magic says that Ben wants to say a few words. Ben talks about how he and Addison are one entity even if separated, and Addison tells Ben that she's never going to let him go. They kiss and everyone applauds, and then as Addison goes, Ben gets the call and leaves
Later, the project starts up and Ben enters the quantum accelerator. He wakes up at the wheel of a car, and the man in the car next to him, who Ben doesn't so, talks about a woman named Katie and wonders if he's making a mistake. Ben wonders how he got there, and the man, Ryan, says that he's not going to let the one good thing he has slip through his fingers. He calls Ben "Nick", then puts on a mask and takes out a gun, and leaves the car. Ben looks at his face in the car's rear view member, and realizes his reflection has someone else's face.
Ben gets out of the van and finds himself on a street in Philadelphia. He looks around and sees a sign saying that it's July 1985. He checks his wallet and finds a driver's license for Nick Rounder, with a photo of the face he saw in the mirror. Addison comes over and addresses Ben by name, asking why he leaped when they weren't ready. Ben doesn't remember who Addison is, and he says that he doesn't remember anything. She says that they knew memory loss could be a side effect of the leap, and before she can explain a nearby alarm goes off. The masked man and two other people wearing masks run out of a nearby bank carrying a large box. They run through Addison, revealing she's a hologram, and Addison tells Ben that she's a hologram from the future and he's time traveled to the past. She tells him to get in the van, and Addison appears next to him and explains how to drive the van's stick.
Two police cars follow them, and Addison tells Ben to lose them. Ryan tells him to head for the restaurant, and Addison brings up the restaurant's location on her hand link. Ben loses one car, and another one follows him. He runs a light and pulls into a nearby alleyway, and the robbers get out of the bank. Ryan asks Ben what's going on, and tells Ben that it's not over and they have a big day ahead of them. He tells Ben to stay sharp, and once he's alone, he asks Addison what's going on. She tells him that he's a time traveler from 2022, they work together, and she's there to bring him home. She started to explain more, and then her hologram vanishes in a burst of static.
In 2022, Addison is in an imaging chamber seeing a projection of Ben, and he fades away. She leaves the chamber and tells Ian that they have to get the computer online. He says that he's working on it, but Ziggy is offline. Ian explains that right before he leaded, Ben uploaded a bunch of new code into the operating system. They were only in the simulation phase of making the project work, but then Ben wrote a whole new operating system, then leaped. Addison tells Ian that Ben doesn't remember anything, and Ian warns that he doesn't understand the new code. She tells Ian that Ziggy will have to wait, and Ian warns that Ziggy the computer is running thousands of simulations to work out what Ben needs to do to get home. He figures that Ben must have had a good reason to leap despite the risks, and Addison is going to have to trust that.
Magic and Jenn come in, and Magic is on the phone talking to their superior, the general, on his cell phone claiming that the power surge is routine and everything is still on-schedule. He asks Addison what Ben said, and she tells Magic that Ben has amnesia. Addison says that Ben kept her in the truth, and insists that Magic can't tell the Pentagon the truth because they'll shut down the project. Ian tells them that the imaging chamber is back online, and Magic tells him to find out what Ben is there to do and bring him back.
Ben goes into the restaurant nearby and runs water on his face, and Addison appears. She tells him that he leaped without telling anyone, and a lot of people would like to know. Ben admits that he doesn't know why he leaped, and Addison says that the machine controls the leap. She explains that 30 years ago, Sam Beckett created the project to help people in the past, that would let him leap. Addison says that Beckett never made it home, and Ben has been working on a new algorithm to correct the flaws in the project. Ben explains that Nick was part of a stickup crew, and he wonders if he trusts Addison. She says that he does.
Before Addison can explain they're connection, Ryan bursts in and asks Ben who he's talking to. Ben claims that he's giving himself a pep talk. They go to the kitchen where the crate is, and they open it to reveal it has C4 in it for the next part of their plan. Charlie, one of the other robbers, complains that Ben was talking to himself while Ryan comes to Ben's defense and points out that Ben got them there. The leader, Cole, says that he needs to know if Ben is getting cold feet. Ryan says that Ben saved their lives, and he vouched for Ben because he knows he'll deliver. Cole drops the matter and tells Ben to be ready. However, he tells Ben that if he screwed it up, he'll kill him.
Ian checks with the tech, and Jenn says that she's been monitoring the conversation and warns that the C4 is dangerous. She hasn't been able to find anything out about Nick, but the newspapers reported an explosion in front of Philly's Museum of Modern Art the day Ben is in. No one was hurt, and Addison wonders why Ben is there to stop an explosion where no one got hurt. Ian and the techs get Ziggy back online.
Ben thanks Ryan for backing him up, and Ryan says that Ben saved him. They go outside, and Ryan's wife Katie and child approach them. Ryan tells Ben not to say anything, asks their daughter Caroline to go off, and Katie tells Ryan that they missed another payment. Her husband claims that the bank approved their loans, and they hug. Addison arrives and Ben talks to him privately, saying Ryan isn't a criminal and figures he's there to save Ryan. Addison agrees and says that Ryan is shot dead that night.
Ben and Ryan go to meet with Horace, and Ben tries to tell Ryan that things are going to get bad that night. When Ben says that there has to be another way, Ryan tells him that he can't find one and had to mortgage the restaurant to pay for Katie's dialysis. They go into the bar Horace and his men are, and they search Ben and Ryan for guns while Horace talks on the phone in Romanian. Addison arrives as Horace gives the two men a fake Hope diamond. He wants to renegotiate and Ryan refuses. Ben says that they should make it personal, and tells Horace that he knows Horace loves his son Constantine, and he understands Romanian when Horace was speaking on the phone. He tells Horace that he knows everything about his life, and Addison takes the hint and checks the databanks via her hand link. She finds information on Horace's Cayman bank accounts and tells Ben, who says that if they don't leave with the fake, Cole will take all of the money out of the accounts. Horace gives in and tells them to get out with the fake, then tells his men to call his accountant.
Jenn tells Magic that Ben is working with a woman, and they found erased security footage to confirm it but it doesn't have enough detail to show the woman's face. The footage does show a military ring, and Jenn tells Magic that he should fire him because Ben disarmed her security system, and Magic took a chance on Jenn when no one else would. Magic refuses and tells her to identify the woman.
Outside, Addison tells Ben that he can't tell Ryan who he really is. Ben says that he knows things, about Horace and Ryan, and Ryan is going to die that night. He figures Ben shoots Ryan, but Ryan doesn't believe him. They get into the car and Ben warns that if Ryan goes through with the crime, he'll be shot and killed. Ryan figures he can't help his family unless he does it.
The two men go back to the restaurant, and Cole has his men draw their guns on Ben. Cole says that they did some digging, and Ben's name isn't Nick Rounder, but Matt Shaw: an undercover cop. Ben tells Ryan that he's not a cop, and Cole beats Ben, then turns on Ryan and accuses him of betraying the others. Ryan insists that he didn't know, and Charlie searches Ben for a wire and doesn't find one. When Cole prepares to shoot him, Ben says that they can't kill him because they won't let cop killers go. Charlie figures that they can use Ben as a bargaining chip, if the police catch them that night. Cole hasn't told Ben everything so he doesn't know the whole plan.
Cole's men and Ryan take Ben into the kitchen and handcuff him to a rack. Ryan figures that Ben used him to get on the crew. Ben tells him that Cole will kill him, but Ryan says that Cole will kill him if he walks.
Magic talks to Ian, who is taking a break, and says that he needed to take a break because one of his best friends is trapped in time. Magic tells Ian to focus, and Magic has Jenn confirm that the US covered up the Hope Diamond was stolen and replaced, and the government has the fake on display at the Smithsonian. Magic suggests that if they can get the specifics, they'll learn about how the crew stole the real diamond. That will save Ryan's life, which will trigger Ben leaping back to the present.
Addison tells Ben that in the original timeline, Matt wasn't shot. The crew gave Matt the slip, killed Ryan, and Matt retired out of guilt. She tells him to pull the plastic ties as tight as he can, and then bite them. Addison explains that originally she was supposed to leave with Ben as her hologram. Ben apologies, and Ben manages to break the ties. Addison tells Ben to call 911, but he refuses because Ben will get arrested and he has can't to stop the heist. She says that if Ben that if he doesn't stop the robbery, he won't go home and she's one of the people waiting for him. Ben tells her that he's sorry for hiding things from everyone, but he can't let Ryan down like he let them. Addison tells him to put on one of the tuxes the crew is using as disguises.
As Ben and Addison arrive at the museum, Addison tells Ben that if Matt dies, Ben will die as well. They go in and mingle with the guests, and see the Hope Diamond on display. Addison accesses the DoD file and confirms that the crew takes out the power at 8:00 and seals the security door. They'll swap out the real diamond for the fake, and Cole and his crew will be long gone and Ryan dies. It's 7:45, and Ben spots one of the robbers, Pete, heading for the security room.
Ben goes after Pete and punches him unconscious, then he goes out and looks for Ryan. He spots him on the balcony, and goes up and tells Ryan that he's stopping the heist. Before Ryan can respond, Addison tells Ben that Charlie is on the move. Ben goes after her, grabs Charlie, and tangos with her while keeping her from getting a car. He tells her not to make a scene, and Charlie waves to Cole to not interfere.
Ben tells Charlie that if they let Ryan live, he'll let the crew walk. Charlie wonders why she would do that, and Ben tells her that he already stopped Pete. Charlie figures she can still handle it, and Ben tells her that nobody will die in the museum because the guests are safe in the museum. Charlie pulls her gun from her leg holster and shoots into the ceiling,
Ben and Ryan go out to the car where the C4 is in the trunk, while the crew grab the diamond. Addison tells Ben that he has to cut the wire, but he has nothing to cut it with. Ben spots a nearby manhole cover, picks up the bomb, and drops it into a nearby sewer. Ben and Ryan run to safety, while the bomb goes off.
Afterward, Ryan thanks Ben, who tells Ryan to go home and not hide things from the people he loves. They shake hands, and Ryan goes. Addison confirms that the crew was arrested, Ryan went to the police, and the city heard his story and rallied around him. Katie got the treatment she needed, and Ryan eventually got his restaurant back. Ben thanks Addison for her help, and says that she made him feel safe. Addison repeats what Ben said at the party, and tells him that he doesn't like parties much. Ben leaps, and Addison goes back to the others.
Ian runs Ben's new code, but Ziggy can't locate Ben. Later, Magic heads to DC to brief their superior, the general. Jenn tells Magic that the mystery woman was wearing a ring from a Navy platoon that served in Vietnam. The last name on the list is Al Calavacci, who was on the original project. Magic figures that Al's daughter, Janice, is wearing Al's ring. She wanted to join the project but the DoD had concerns about her emotional ties to Al and Sam. Magic tells Jenn to find Janice and goes.
Addison walks around her and Ben's beach house, finds Ben's phone, and plays it .There's a message on it from Ben, saying that it's bigger than them and bigger than anything she can imagine. Ben is doing it because he thinks it's worth it, and it has to be done. He promises that he'll find his home to Addison.
Ben finds himself on the Space Shuttle Atlantis, and yells as the shuttle lifts off the pad.
