Good thriller

It is captivating and addictive, with good acting given the circumstances. Just very good thriller, nothing else, does not have the wow factor. No emotions other than the desire to see what happens next in the plot line.

Mandy can't act
mihmichael29 October 2021
Mandy, who bailed on Criminal Minds (because it was "too dark" for him) jumped right in into even darker role. And he can't act, he is using the same facial expressions in every role, the same voice when angry, scared or disturbed in any way. Anyway, a great pilot episode and great potential, minus always-the-same Mandy. Hopefully, he gets killed off soon so we can enjoy in acting.

Engaging

After hearing all of the acclaim for Homeland's first season, I have decided to give it a go. The Pilot was was all pilots should be- engaging enough to continue. The Pilot wasn't perfect, but it moved at a brisk pace, and was always intriguing. I also want to say that Claire Danes is fantastic so far. Her character is very interesting, and Danes handled it magnificently. This character has the potential to become one of the classic TV problematic characters that we have (Tony Soprano, Walter White, Don Draper, McNulty). Al in a,, very pleased with this Pilot, and I will definitely continue watching. These days, it seems as if Television has come full circle... it is completely well-made and well thought out, and if this turns out to be half as good as Rubicon, The Wire, or Breaking Bad, then I am all the better for it.

Want a good mystery thriller? Don't look here.

Warning: Spoilers
Show starts off very well. Is the protagonist really about to unearth a conspiracy or is she simply seeing delusions due to an unspecified psychotic illness she suffers from? Well, this has the makings of a good conspiracy/psychological/mystery paranoia thriller...until the last 30 seconds of the pilot just curb-stomps the whole premise by having the audience magically mind-read the suspected mole. Completely deflates the mystery/paranoia/psychological element. Apparently the creators think their audience is too dumb to be able to piece together clues with the protagonist and has to spoon-feed us with god-like insight (aka spoilers). Now, we get to "root" on the spunky, moody agent episode after episode to slowly discover what we already know. Hooray!

Sometimes I feel that Showtime has an arbitrary number of sex scenes, violence and curse words they have to reach every episode, and they just sort of write episodes around these requirements. Sometimes, though, they actually write a pretty good show. This is a prime example. The show has a plot that's similar to its brilliant predecessor, "Sleeper Cell," but lacks the enormously high stakes and tension that made SC such an engrossing show. Luckily, it's managed to crawl out from under the 24/sleeper cell husk and find some new ground in a genre that has been very well trodden. It does this with the exquisite use of Claire Danes, making sure that the story isn't just, "intrepid CIA agent versus charismatic yet sinister terrorist," and is instead, "mildly psychotic CIA agent versus mildly psychotic terrorist." As I said before, I feel like Showtime is constantly throwing sex and violence in my face, sometimes for no good reason, just in case I forget what I'm paying for, but none of it actively detracted from the entertainment, just slowed it down, like they were running out the clock. Also, without spoiling anything, I want to say that the show has set up a rather unbelievable turn around in one of the character's motivation. And while they have an entire season to explain that turn (which I am very excited to discover), I feel that with all the other sub plots they've introduced and the myriad they will likely pile on as time goes by, I doubt that one season is going to be enough time. And if I have to wait until season 2 to figure out why a character is doing literally anything they are doing, I'm going to be unhappy.

Evil

Unless you like slow soap-operas where the actors mindlessly go through the motions that the "writers" have put together in order to prop up the mindset that The Ends Justify the Means, The Heroine can do No Wrong, The main character is the bestest ever because someone said so (not because we actually get to see her being good at her job), and that any agency would grant such high security clearance to someone with such an obvious mental illness/chemical dependency, and other mindless jingoism masquerading as Patriotism, then this show is not for you.

Only one character, seemingly as a joke by the writers, points out that the main character has hired him (and his brother) to do something amazingly illegal (and unethical). This is the only actually believable and remotely likeable character. This show won awards? Damn--how crappy must the competition have been?

I almost managed to endure the entire episode, but frankly, this is garbage. It may be better than the other garbage on TV, but that doesn't change the fact that it is a highly polished dog turd.
