Cinderella Part 1
'Cinderella' has always been among my all-time favourite stories. Just love and identify with the titular character, rooting for her to succeed and escape her obstacles, the story really enchants (both Perrault's and the more gruesome Brothers Grimm's) and how everything is described. It is one of the most beloved, most famous and most often adapted stories for very good reason, it is very much a timeless classic.
It is sad that 'Grimm Masterpiece Theater's' (known to others as 'Grimm Fairy Tale Classics'), an overlooked and nicely done if inconsistent anime series from the late 80s), two part version of 'Cinderella' (one of the longest adaptations of the series along with the longer 'Snow White') isn't known more. Found myself liking it very much and consider it on its own terms as good as more iconic versions (the most iconic being Disney's, love that film just to say with it being one of my first Disney films). As well as being near the better (both parts) episodes of the series.
Was not a major fan of the music, which has been uneven overall in 'Grimm Masterpiece Theater', in some episodes it's fine and in other episodes it doesn't fit and easily forgettable quickly. The latter is the case with 'Cinderella'.
The lip synchronisation also doesn't seem to match with the voice acting, the voices tending to be too fast for it.
On the whole, the voice acting was not an issue for me. Those for Cinderella and the Prince fit well, while those for the suitably nasty stepmother and the constantly angry but enormously entertaining King coming off best. Wasn't as crazy for the stepsisters, personally think the voices and the characters could have been nastier instead of being almost like comic relief. Did love though how the characters were written generally, what did immediately strike me was that the prince actually had a personality in this version and his chemistry with Cinderella was sweet. The King was a lot of fun and the stepmother is as deliciously evil as she should be. The doves appealed in personality and didn't come over as filler.
Did like the simplicity and charm of the animation, especially in the backgrounds. The finesse isn't always there but one can see the expressitivity in the character designs. The dialogue is not too complicated for children or too simple for adults, with some of the best lines coming from the King (more in the second part than here). The story has all the charm that it should do.
Summarising, very nicely done. 8/10
