Max says of green hellibore 'it did kill Alexander the Great; but those Greeks tend to overdo'. The accounts of Alexander III of Macedon's death vary, some say he was sick for 14 days others say 11 days, some say fever others gastric distress. In 2003 a BBC program did suggest white hellibore poisoning. But it could have been typhoid fever or malaria or West Nile fever or a perforated colon with peritonitis. Also, many Macedonians resent being called Greeks.
