Promotions, Reunion and Religion
claudio_carvalho12 July 2014
Angel's sister Jamie is helping Dexter to take care of Harrison. The atheist Dexter is also looking for a Catholic school for his son following Jaime's recommendation. Dexter is invited to the 20th anniversary reunion of his high-school class. His only friend, Janet, died three years ago apparently committing suicide, but Dexter believes that her husband Joe Walker killed her and he wants to collect his blood sample to be sure. Angel and LaGuerta have divorced and she is promoted to Captain. But she recommends the lieutenant position to Angel. Debra and Quinn are living together and he wants to propose her to get married with him. When the intestine of a fruit street vendor is found on his scale, the Miami Metro detectives do not have any clue. But soon his body is found on the beach with seven snakes inside his corpse.

"Those Kinds of Things" is a good beginning of this season and shows a different scenario for Dexter and his friends. Sonya apparently left Dexter and now he hired Angel's sister to take care of Harrison. Debra and Quinn living together; LaGuerta and Angel are divorced. Now the serial killers seem to be two fanatic religious men. My vote is eight.

What would Jesus do?

Warning: Spoilers
I have held off reviewing any episode of Dexter so far by convincing myself that I will give the series a beautiful one once I am done with it in its entirety.

But this episode? Was just soo genuinely like "Dexter", I can not hold off anymore.

Dexter as a show is a masterpiece on satire. And this episode takes it to an even higher, mad level of fun and irony. With Dexter debating religion and belief in a higher power with everyone from a nun to a victim (on the freaking table, covered in plastic, I beg of you), this was a whole new level of black humour. They bring back the new season with a lot of changes and the concept of 'moving forward'. A new interesting killer has also been introduced.. I am really eager to see where this season goes.

Might I also add.

Dexter does the Hammertime in this one.

1. Harrison goes to preschool 2. Dexter awkwardly dances 3. Dexter gets a BJ

Pretty solid pilot episode for the season. Sets up the tone of the season - doesn't look like Dexter's sidekick is yet introduced but our villains have been introduced like season 4. The whole reunion concept was pretty funny and a little embarrassing but in a good way. But it does seem super unlikely he can set up a kill room in the middle of a school and be able to carry him out without anyone noticing... slight bit of unrealistic writing but I'm usually pretty generous about that stuff.

Quinn looks like he's going to propose to Deb and I'm not sure how I feel about them. Deb has changed a lot over the seasons and Quinn is possibly the least romantic relationship she's been in perhaps due to her change. Wonder how they are going to explore their relationship.

Dexter's back! Thank you Jebus!

Warning: Spoilers
Just finished watching a screener of this Sunday's New Episode of Dexter. Awesome. I love how they already start the season at a fast pace. I'm not sure how they are going to top last season, but I am almost certain they will. The first ep has tons of exposition for the "new villains" aka our two fantastic guest actors Colin Hanks and Edward James O. The religious theme this year is going to be fun. I like anything that challenges the question of god, good and evil, whats right and wrong, faith vs destiny, which this show clearly loves to push the envelope and walk one of the thinest lines. That's why we all love it so much. We get excited to watch a killer kill. Dexter fans, you're gonna love the new season. If the first ep is a relflections of whats in store for the other 11 episodes, hell to the freakin YEAH!

An Interesting Episode
TheDragonfly4422 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
It's hard to explain this episode. On one hand this was by far the funniest episode of the entire series so far. It isn't perfect - there is just a bit too much exposition at the beginning of the episode for me and it was hard to adjust to the drastically different tone of this episode compared to the last season. The scenes with Travis also felt too ominous for its own good. My last complaint with this episode is that while shocking, the bar scene felt a bit to abrupt. That being said, this was a hilarious episode. Too funny for it's own good maybe but hard to not laugh at Dexter attempting to dance to hammer time, Batista and his sister at a restaurant, Batista trying to explain religion to Dexter, Masukas interns, Dexter being seen as popular, Dexter playing football and Dexter receiving a blowjob. There's so much that was funny about this episode Im willing to forgive the errors. I enjoyed just about every minute of it. That being said It does leave me a bit uncertain about the future episodes.

Water snakes and class reunion
jotix10019 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Dexter does not take long to find the next victims. He pretends to have been stabbed in order to attract the attention of two EMT bad guys that have been selling organs of unsuspecting individuals they were supposed to help. He is relentless in his quest to deal with all the bad people he gets his hands on. A nightly trip on his boat to dispose of the bodies is the rule.

Harrison has a new nanny. She is the young sister of Angel Batista. The young woman, Jamie, a college student, has developed a nice rapport with the toddler. As Dexter comes home, he finds Angel at the new place he bought next to the old unit he had, in order to have more room. Angel acts as though being guilty of being with his attractive younger sister. Jamie and Angel both recommend highly a catholic school for Harrison.

Deb accompanies her brother when he takes Harrison for an interview at the new school. The nun in charge, of admission is puzzled by Dexter's answers as he confesses he does not identify with anything in matters of religious beliefs, something that is baffling to the nun. To compound on the problem, as Dexter is leaving the school, he sees a lot of paintings depicting God in a somber manner. Dexter is not completely sure he wants his son in that environment.

Maria LaGuerta is seen during her promotion to Captain. The ceremony is attended by all her colleagues. At the end of the presentation, as Maria is preparing to leave the parking area, the police chief who was instrumental in her promotion, pays her a visit. Maria's ascent in the ranks is partially the product of her saving the man from a possible scandal when she found his name in the address book of a prominent hooker. At the station, Maria is packing her things. Angel and Maria, now divorced, are in friendly terms. Maria offers a recommendation for Angel to get her job as a lieutenant.

Dexter has decided to attend his upcoming high school reunion. The main reason for going is to deal with former jock Joe Walker, who married Janet, the only girl that was kind to the nerdy Dexter in those days. Janet who supposedly committed suicide, had died under strange conditions and a drop of blood found in one of her nails, which was not her own, must be compared to match against the police evidence in the file. Her husband Joe Walker was never a suspect in the case. Dexter, who hates going to the party must figure out a way to get a sample from Joe, something that proves to be difficult, but eventually Dexter prevails, being sure now Joe killed Janet, so he must make him pay for it.

Two men are seen rowing a boat in what appears to be the Everglades. They are looking for a water snake, but not any one will suffice. They get lucky in getting a pregnant one. Later, the two men approach a street fruit vendor. The men have come prepared to do something to this poor man, acting as though they are part of some kind of cult. A passerby called the police to report the missing man from the stand. When the police and Dexter arrive, they find what appear to be intestines, which they think must belong to the missing man. When the body turns up two Greek letters are shown clearly on the man's stomach that has been cut open. Dexter decides to open the stitches and seven baby water snakes come out of the body.

Dexter succeeds in getting Joe Walker out of commission and takes him to the place where he will do the ultimate deed, avenging Janet. He has trouble though as he attempts to deliver the final blow because of the religious tattoo on Joe Walker's chest. Quinn, who wanted to surprise Deb that night, takes her to a restaurant. Quinn does not know how to ask her to marry him. He excuses himself to go to the men's room to rehearse. Deb sees a man enter the restaurant shooting randomly, she answers back, firing her own gun and she is shot.

The start of the sixth season of "Dexter" was worth waiting for, judging by the first episode. Dexter is one of the favorites from the viewing public. Part of the appeal is that one sees in him a sort of avenging angel that takes care of the criminals that cause so much harm and are able to get away with their murders. The first episode was directed by John Dahl. The screenplay is by Scott Buck, a frequent contributor to the program and based on Jeff Lindsay criminal novels.

Michael C. Hall is impressive as Dexter, now happily identified with the character. He delivers deadpan performances with his quiet no-nonsense style. The regular characters are well matched by the supporting cast. Jennifer Carpenter, Desmond Harrington, C.S. Lee, Lauren Velez and David Zayas, and James Remar show good chemistry together. The guest stars are Colin Hanks and Edward James Olmos, who did not have much to do on the opener.

S6.E1 - Decent Episode to Start the Season [8.4/10]
panagiotis199320 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
(S6. E1) My Reaction / Review for Dexter Season 6 Episode 1 ''Those Kinds of Things'': Season 5 was great and I gave it a rating of 9/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. Dex has been busy I see. Wow, Laguerta is now captain? Good for her. So Laguerta and Angel are divorced now? How did that happen? I didn't think that Dex would care about school reunions. Dex dancing is priceless. Dex doesn't really understand faith and religion but that makes a lot of sense for the character. So this new killer opens the victim's stomach and puts snakes in it? Disgusting but also I wonder why does he kill this way? My rating is 8.4/10.

"Those Kinds of Things" Critique
calgaryflames730 September 2011
Warning: Spoilers
OK... so it wasn't the most mind blowing 1st episode of Dexter, but it was wonderful nonetheless.

The high school reunion was very creative on the writers parts. Although I feel uneasy about how quickly Dexter accepted that blow job. He's rarely been sexually focused and this just didn't fit. Season 1 he was timid with Rita, season 2 he went crazy for Lila, but 3, 4, and 5 he was calm. 3 and 4 was regular sex with Rita and in season 5, he only had sex with Lumen after they were "dating." It just seemed odd... although it proved useful because he was able to grab her phone (which was not the smartest because if the cops found the body, they would trace his texts, find Trisha, question her, and she would point the finger at Dexter. So in that sense... not too smart.)

I was totally surprised by Quinn thinking about proposing. I mostly find it dumb that the writers ended season 5 with them starting a healthy relationship and opening the next episode with a near proposal. Things have been left out and I feel that the viewers need more in between time for the relationship to truly come together. As viewers, we did just get over Quinn being an asshole to Dex. He went from a character we were annoyed and frustrated with to a boyfriend, almost fiancé who were supposed to care about in 6? episodes?

I feel the same way with Batista and LaGuerta. They're divorce was unannounced, not explained and simply dumb. I loved them as a couple and in the end of The Big One, (Season 5 episode 12) they agreed that they would give their relationship another shot. What are the writers thinking? Its the same thing as before. We become used to a new personality in a character than they change it in a heartbeat.

Matsuka would have hired the babe for sure... or at least made some more jokes about the situation.

The murders and religious plot line are brilliant. Most seasons so far have developed and tested Dexter's sexual relationships. Rita, Lila, and Lumen all show this. Its nice to get away from that and focus something that many people can relate to. Everyone has a stance on religion and its good to know Dexter's. I'm hoping it will change due to the radical nature of the killers this season, and Dexter's nonchalantness about the subject. Its almost as if were seeing a new side of Dexter.

Every season so far, the killer's identity has remained a secret to the audience which has created the mystery and intrigue. The trinity killer was an exception but that mystery was replaced by the suspense of Arthur and Dexter becoming "friends." I am interested how the writers will keep the show fresh and unique this season. I do not know how they will make the show more intense. It better be good.

One of my favorite parts was the quick shot of the blood red moon. In Darkly Dreaming Dexter, (the first book) it opens and closes with the glowing of the red moon symbolizing the Dark Passenger urging Dexter to kill again. I'm pretty sure this is the first time we've seen the red moon in the series. I'm not to sure. Maybe its a sign of the beginning of the first season. Or maybe its showing the end of the glorious series.

Overall: After watching this episode and finding all of the inconsistencies within the story, I am starting the think that the best days of Dexter are behind us. Don't get me wrong... I'm a fan until the end and as fitting as it is for this season, "I have faith" that it will get better. The fact is that after this season, the actors' contracts will be up and they will probably want a raise due to the widespread success of the show. This could cause more plot holes and we could lose some characters.

It always has and always remain my favorite show.

Worst Dexter episode so far
Mafio19 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Now this is my first review on IMDb I ever made and I doubt that many people will care about this. But I have the urge to speak my mind about this awful episode of Dexter.

Now I do not know what has changed but if this show will continue this low standard I might stop watching it. I say this as a true fan of this show. Throughout the last seasons, Dexter kept always a very good storyline. The first season was legendary and the second and third were quite good as well. The last two seasons were the best in my own opinion.

Keeping this in your head, what can one expect of this season premiere? After 10 minutes I started to wonder what is going on. After 20 minutes I looked on the time to figure out when this episode will end.

(BIG SPOILER ALTERT) It starts with too many too big changes. Batista and LaGuerta are no longer a couple. LaGuerta has become corrupt and blackmails her boss to get a promotion. Now we all know that LaGuerta was always able to be a "bitch" but this move seems even kinda rough for her. Why Batista and her broke up was not even mentioned.

Also they bring a never mentioned sister of Batista to the show which is Dexters neighbor/roommate/babysitter. She is hot so that seems to be the only reason for her to be on the show.

Dexters son has aged quite a lot - he is about 3 or 4 now. What happened to Ritas children and if they are still in contact with Dex is also not mentioned. So Dex wants to get his boy into a good school. In order to do so he checks out a Christian school which was recommended by Batista. In this 5 minutes we get to see a "new side" of Dexter. He is being an atheist! What a surprise. Well, it is a surprise for his sister and she questions him about that. This whole scenario seems like the start of an entire new show rather then a season in which the writers try to establish the personalities of their characters. After 5 seasons we DO KNOW about Dexter and what he believes, so why going there?

About the killing: the first kill in this episode is ridiculous. You see Dexter bloody and weak, calling for emergency. You think "man, how did you screw this up". But he was just pretending. His targets are two medics who are coming to rescue him. How he managed to get the right ambulance at his place, I can't figure it out. Also why he pretended to be wounded even there was no one to see... doesn't sound like the cautious Dexter I used to know. But lets draw our attention to the main kill in this episode: Dexter goes to his high school reunion where his next target is to be expected. The target killed his wife 3 years ago. Why Dexter is in need to wait for a reunion instead of hunting down his target on his own is also strange. When Dex arrived at the reunion, he has become popular. His father appears and tells him that people adore him because he is good looking, lost his wife and has a "cool job". Instead of flying under the radar he should enjoy it.

So Dexter thinks "what the heck" and plays the cool fellow who tells others about his nice job. Later he does a little dance along with the others. Everything I see looks terrible - who wrote this? Anyway - so his plan is to get a blood sample of his main target. The target shot his wife and made it look like a suicide, although her fingernails were bloody. After Dex gets the sample he is able to match the new sample with the fingernail sample and guess what, they are the same. So if I understand it right... there was a suicide and there was blood under the fingernails of the victim. The blood of the victims husband, who was known to be a brute, happened to be match up with the one under the fingernails. What cop would have let the husband go?

But well. In order to get to his target (AT THE REUNION, WHERE HE IS POPULAR!) he gets blown by some stupid blonde whore who has now reason to be attracted to him in the first place. He steals her phone after his BJ, lures his target into a trap, ties him up and what then? Then he has a little religious talk. Seems like Dexter will find his way to god during this season. This seams stupid too because just a few scenes ago Dex talked about god with Batista. In his head Dexter mocked Batista and religion itself. Where do the writers want to go?

Last but not least, they also introduced the main villain(s) of this season. The killers have religious motivation (what a coincidence) but the acting was alright.

###

Alright. I do know that this review is not good; it has no structure and also English is not my mother tongue. Anyways, I just wanted to show my point of view because no one that has reviewed it yet has shared my opinion that this was a cruel episode of bad writing and even worse acting.

Have a good day

Pretty Underwhelming Premiere
tgrock25 September 2011
Warning: Spoilers
We are introduced to two villains, a new babysitter, and a lab intern for Season 6, Episode 1 of Dexter. That was the main the draw to the episode. This week got a rather ordinary target for Dexter to kill. At this point in the show, I want a more concise, fast-paced season to end the show strong. However, they've really added lots of filler here. At one point Dexter participates in a game of football and it just seems silly. Probably the best part of the episode was near the end of the episode and it didn't even involve Dexter; it involved Debra. Yet, what happens there doesn't even seem to have a place in the long run for the season; it's just a random event.

Dexter is supposed to learn about religion this season and the killers apparently use the Bible for as sources for their rituals. While, it would be unfair to judge the villains at this point, a religious freak-killer has already been done in 'Seven'. Also, it seems highly unlikely and unrealistic that the villain in the episode would get away with the kill that he did. So, already I'm unimpressed with the villain(s) so far.

I hope that this episode will be only filler of the season.

Promising religion-driven season and guest stars, hilarious and macabre scenes, fresh and exciting premiere, entertaining highschool reunion but shameful unsafe sex
igoatabase3 October 2011
Tonight is the night. I have been feeling the excitement for weeks now. Since the fifth season ended I have regularly dreamed of Lumen and how much Julia Stiles performance moved and inspired me. But it's only now that I remember that back in December, 2010 I wasn't able to review the last three episodes. But for the moment it's wiser to focus on the present because season 6 just premiered.

To tell the truth its trailer made me skeptical because it featured far too many characters and I wasn't sure its religious theme would well mix with the show spirit. Don't get me wrong Dexter isn't just a physical body it also has a soul considering how heartbreaking and shocking it can be. However until now it had been relatively rational and quite earthbound. What do you believe ? I wonder what your answer is because as far as the show is concerned I strongly believe Dex can be saved. Just watch Fringe's premiere or read my review of the Easy as Pie episode to better understand what I mean. But to go back to the question two characters asked it to Dex and one of them was his sister but we all know he's no fox when it comes to such matters. It was definitely enlightening because it unveiled a new side of his multifacet persona. For the moment his reflection in the religious mirror is inexistent so I can't wait that it reveals its true colors. Vampire or mere mortal ?

It leads us to the characters because my only worry was to endure a new mumbo jumbo relationship like the one between Angel Batista and Maria LaGuerta. Things slightly got better but it's still first in my rotten elements list. That's why I was so glad to finally have our friendly Batista back and the addition of his lovely sister should definitely spice things up. Their scene at the restaurant was hilarious and instantly made them grow on me. In fact contrary to My Bad, season 5 first episode, Those Kinds of Things really felt like a premiere because of the numerous changes that happened since the finale. As for Vince it seems we can still count on him to deliver the comic relief and his professor arc is promising. However it's really Dex who acted like a clown this time and delivered most of the fun thanks to an entertaining highschool reunion. Moreover it was supported by Harry's ghost. Toilet buddy ? Bloody coach ? A refreshing role that changed of his usual seriousness. As for the story it allowed us to learn more about Dex's student life. It would actually be quite interesting to continue in this direction and feature some flashbacks like the ones in early seasons where Harry taught his son how to control his dark emotions. Otherwise I have a major complain about what happened because I hate when unsafe sex is shown on TV. I don't mind gratuitous nudity, specially when the woman is so sexy, but doing a fellatio poses a risk of infection. Ever heard of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases ? Use condoms or better, do it with someone you really trust and have feelings for !

Parallel to the little escape in highschool land the mandatory villains of the season were introduced. Indeed for once there're two monsters apparently and I already anticipate how much Edward James Olmos will disturb us considering how his performance on Caprica was convincing. Will he surpass John Lithgow from season 4 ? At least teaming him up with Colin Hanks is a bright idea, even if I only know him as Alex Whitman (Roswell), because so far Dex only had to deal with one villain at a time. Last season he was the one tagging along Lumen so I'm curious to see how these two new characters will interact and evolve. Master and apprentice ? I suspect the writers will surprise us again with their usual vicious twists. Moreover as expected Deb, who didn't swear (Oh my #$& !) but pulled out her gun, and her gang have to investigate and the first crime scene will surely test your guts and sense of humor. The absence of graphic violence was also quite stimulating because it allowed our mind to imagine how things happened. Dex's admirative reaction was also reminiscent of the first season and confirmed that this season should illuminate the atheists and be challenging for the deists.

worst ever episode
kamilafras119 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I have never written a review on IMDb before, but this episode brutally forced me to give up my review virginity. After having watched all 5 seasons in the span of a few weeks I had a good sense of who Dexter is. A methodical, almost perfect killer who never leaves any evidence behind and relishes in the ritual of preparing the 'kill room' almost as much as the actual killing. He never puts himself out there and the family and friends he has were almost forced onto him by life's mysterious events. The first episode in the series changes everything you know about Dexter.

The opening scene is with him running away from something, supposedly after being stabbed in the stomach. Of course he was not stabbed, which leaves the viewer wondering why go to all the theatrics of pretending to be if no one was around to see and he was lying face-down anyway when the EMTs come. The 2 EMTs are organ-stealing murderers and Dexter kills them not by strapping them to a table with plastic, but by using defibrillators. No 'kill room'. No relished ritual. Plenty of evidence left behind i.e. from the phony stab wound. Uncovering the organ-stealing organisation would have made for a better plot line than the one with the horrible CGI snakes. Lets take a minute to appreciate how horrible the CGI snakes were. So far the TV show has done splendidly with the props, prosthetic and make-up when it came to the gory murder scenes. The lack of CGI made it so much more realistic. Please, no more. Next is the new nanny, which has to be an even worse side plot-line than Laguerta and Batista's romance. Last season the role of the nanny went to the talented Doyle Kennedy, who portrayed Sonya. The viewers, including myself, might have thought that by hiring a higher-calibre actress, Sonya's role will develop into something more than phoning Dexter about Harrison in his moments of murder for added comedy effect. But no. It is very probable that Mrs Kennedy packed her bags when she realised the extent of her character. The new nanny, who also happens to be Batista's sister (which we don't find out for a long time and we are lead to believe that Batista and her are a couple, for whatever reason) is given a much bigger role. We see her talking to Batista in a restaurant and winning the award for the most redundant and boring scene in Dexter so far. I don't see how her character can bring anything to Dexter's 'other side' other than phoning him to ask to sing for Harrison, so I see no reason in her plot-line at all. I would much rather watch Laguerta's and Batista's break-up (which was glossed over, for no reason) and that's saying something. Something I thought I'd never see - Dexter getting a BJ from former prom queen!! Dexter is a detached, calculating killing machine why shies away from feelings and any involvement with people who are not involved in his 'cover' (Rita, Lumen, Deb and the kids being the exceptions) and he lets this happen? The whole high-school reunion plot line felt like it was written by a high school social reject who is making his fantasy become reality through screenplay. It was very cringe-worthy, especially the scene with Harry in the bathroom. Has the actor who plays Harry got something on the producers? That's the only reason I can think of as to why he is kept on, season after season. I'd rather hear Michael's sexy voice talking to himself. I'd love to know more about the blood ring. I'd like to see how he came to the idea, how he developed it. No backstory is given. The backstory on that ring could have replaced the nanny story. Rings don't put out, however. All in all, worst episode so far. Kind of like when there is an app that you really like and one day a company buys it and all the good things about the app now you have to pay a monthly subscription for, otherwise you are left with a skeleton app. This episode was the skeleton app. Wish I could buy the rest. Oh wait, I already am, Netflix. Maybe the rest of the season will make this right.

This show jumped the shark after season 2 and has never regained its footing. I watch it now as a perverse comedy because that's the only way it even remotely makes sense. What a waste.
