Netflix’s “Dahmer,” created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, wants to offer a more progressive view of Milwaukee serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, who killed 17 men and boys over the course of a decade and a half.
“Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” which is indeed the title, aims for that progressive viewpoint in two ways but also, sneakily, a third one.
The series considers how the internal failures of law enforcement ultimately enabled Dahmer’s killing spree; a bulk of the 10 hour-long episodes are also devoted to giving voice and face to the victims often overlooked by similar fictionalized serial killer shows and movies; yet it also, in showing Dahmer’s occasional flashes of guilt or self-doubt or feelings of futility about the murders and himself, succeeds whether on purpose or not in humanizing him to a degree.
That’s already proven to be a huge problem for...

There was a brief period of time during the first Obama administration when Hollywood tried to make Jason Segel a leading man. Freshly minted by the ever-expanding Apatow Cinematic Universe, he was being pitched as the next romantic comedy star. Things didn’t really pan out, and whatever charming qualities can be found in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Jeff, Who Lives at Home, and The Five-Year Engagement, those films revealed the limits of Segel’s on-screen charisma. This was a supporting actor through and through, always at ease performing in the friend zone.
So it’s not at all surprising that Segel shows up as Dane, the saintly bestie in Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s Our Friend, one of those prototypical American indies that tries to be comedic, dramatic, and life affirming all in the same breath. Based on an autobiographical article entitled “The Friend” written by Matthew Teague, the film jumps...

If you were interested in importing Japanese games in the late 80s, or if you're just into far-eastern retro games today, you may have stumbled on Kato-chan & Ken-chan - a platform game released for the PC Engine 30 years ago this month. Released in America as Jj & Jeff for the TurboGrafx-16 (the console's name on those shores), it quickly vanished without trace, largely because the system only sold in relatively small numbers.

So its been over a fortnight since Chris and myself got back from Cinci and although we shared our experiences on episode #90 of the 365 podcast, I also wanted to do a cheeky little write up for the website…
First off we have said it about a hundred times but we can’t thank Matt and Andrew enough for having us over to the Expo and looking after us leading up to the event. Also to the History of Bad Ideas lads who made us feel so at home, as if we have known them for about 20 years instead of the actual 2 and a bit. Meeting them face to face was honestly something i thought would never happen. Special shout out to Jeffrey Nau for being our chauffeur.

Grasshopper Film has acquired Us rights to Spettacolo, the follow-up to the 2010 documentary Marwencol from Jeff Malmberg and producer Chris Shellen.
Spettacolo premiered at SXSW and will open theatrically in the autumn followed by VOD and home video release.
The film centres on the 50th anniversary of a unique theatre group in Tuscany whereby villagers depict themselves on stage as a way of working through their issues.

The Episode | “Serious Mothering” (Feb. 26, 2017)
The Performance | Oh, how we’ve missed this Reese Witherspoon. The living and breathing firecracker from the Election/Legally Blonde era who would toggle from bitchy to emboldened to entitled to vulnerable in the span of seconds. The one who could deliver a well-crafted one-liner with Bette Davis-like precision before melting your heart with a simple glance.
Luckily, with HBO’s Big Little Lies, the Oscar winner has triumphantly returned to her darkly comedic wheelhouse, and that was especially so with Sunday’s second episode.

Hell Or High Water is definitely one of the indie films you have to check out this year.
Set in modern day West Texas, two brothers are set in robbing banks to save a ranch from an auction. With these string of robberies, two buddy cops are on their tail to put a stop on these bank heights. With great dialogue, story twists and drama, Hell Or High Water proves to be one of the best indie films this year.
Lrm had a chance to connect with director David Mackenzie for a phone interview to discuss the film. We talked a lot about genre films, Texas-American culture, the cast and the plotlines.
The film stars Chris Pine, Jeff Bridges, Ben Foster and Gil Birmingham.
Hell Or High Water is available on Blu-ray, DVD and digital download today.
Read the full transcript of the interview below.
Lrm: You’ve done so many indie films.

Director David Mackenzie talks about making Hell Or High Water with Chris Pine, and the state of modern cinema...
A blend of western and heist thriller, Hell Or High Water has one foot in the present and one in the past. Its rugged atmosphere recalls classic thrillers and dramas of the 1970s, yet its setting - among shuttered towns of a post-recession east Texas - is unmistakably modern. Its big skies and Stetsons recall classic westerns, yet its story, brilliantly written by Taylor Sheridan (Sicario) feels like a eulogy for a vanishing way of life.
Even the casting feels like a nod to both 70s and contemporary cinema. There are plenty of parallels between Hell Or High Water and Michael Cimino's 1974 thriller Thunderbolt And Lightfoot, not least the casting of Jeff Bridges. In Cimino's film, Bridges stole just about every scene as a live-wire outlaw...

For many years, British filmmaker David Mackenzie’s work had received most of its acclaim on the film festival circuit, whether it was his period drama Young Adam or the thriller Hallam Foe or the prison film Starred Up. These films had Mackenzie working with some of the finest actors in the United Kingdom, many of them early in their careers.
Mackenzie’s upcoming film Hell or High Water may finally get him attention on these shores. It’s a modern-day take on a Western starring Chris Pine and Ben Foster as Toby and Tanner, two brothers committing a crime spree, robbing small banks across Western Texas in order to save their mother’s farm. Hot on their heels is Jeff Bridges’ Texas Ranger Marcus Hamilton, who is ready to retire but decides to solve this one last case with his partner Alberto (Gil Birmingham).

Two couples got their swerve on in this week’s Nashville. One was a foregone conclusion. The other was an abomination.

What combination of things makes even less sense than a tornado made of sharks? How about a post-apocalyptic zombie Western made by and starring boy bands? Sheer absurd randomness (and its attendant clickbait) seems to be the well from which Syfy's Dead 7 was sprung, the latest original movie from the network that has brought us such single-serving classics as Sharknado, Dinocroc vs. Supergator and Titanic II. Like many that have come before it, this genre mash-up walks the crooked line between knowing how bad it is and taking itself just a tad too seriously.

The nerves leading up to a first kiss—we’ve all been there! This short film out of Hofstra University in Long Island, New York, is seeking talent for two kid leads (one girl, one boy), one supporting boy actor, and several kid extras. “The First Kiss” is the story of—you guessed it—a boy’s first kiss! He’s a middle schooler who’s struggling to get the courage to express his feelings for a girl schoolmate with a smooch. In what’s described as a an “adorable, innocent, and comedic story,” it’s the kind of short form offering that’ll make you go, “Aw!” Auditions are being held April 2 in New York City for Chris, the middle schooler who loves Emily, his “girlfriend but not exactly,” who he grew up with. In addition to those two roles, supporting character Jeff is also being cast. He’s...

As you may recall, Aubrey and Chris played adorably weird couple April and Andy on Parks and Recreation, while Jennifer definitely has a sex scene with Chris in their upcoming movie, Passengers. Anna really took advantage of the opportunity with her guests to talk about the actresses' respective experiences. Keep reading for all the hilarious quotes. Hi Everyone! I hope you’ve had a great 2015 – at the very least, survived, and can stumble into the New Year with renewed vigor and reduced credit card charges. For me, 2015 was pretty great overall, especially as this website took a chance on a Canucklehead who loves to write about horror. So before I get started I’d like to give a shout out to the amazing folks at Daily Dead: Jonathan, Heather, Derek, Patrick, Monte, and Tamika (and if I’ve forgotten anyone, I apologize). Great writers and horror junkies, all, but more importantly – great people. Thanks everyone for letting me do my thing. Without any ado, my faves of 2015!

They may not be General Zod or Darth Vader, but these characters are the kind of mundane villains you might encounter in everyday life...
The most memorable movie villains are often also the most outlandish. If you were to stop most strangers on the street and ask them to name screen villain, they’d probably either tell you to leave them alone and stop making them nervous, or they’d instead name one of cinema’s big hitters: heavy-breathing cloak-wearer Darth Vader, or flesh-eating aesthete Hannibal Lecter.
In reality, villains are more mundane. They seldom wear outlandish costumes, and they don’t necessarily even kill or injure people. Real-world villains can range from bullying and self-important bosses to aggressively opinionated news anchors, and from sadistic physical education teachers to heartless politicians.
So here are 10 or so screen antagonists who've stuck in the memory without wearing hockey masks,...

Chicago – Actor Sam Eliott will make you smile. The distinctive voice, his famous mustache and his character presence in a film or TV show increases any potential in the production. He recently was in Chicago with director Paul Weitz, as they teamed up in the film “Grandma,” starring the incomparable Lily Tomlin.
“Grandma” has a very unique premise. Tomlin is the title character of Elle, who is visited by her granddaughter Sage (Julia Garner). The girl is seeking an abortion, and her feminist poet grandmother seems like the right fellow traveler on her way to the procedure. Sam Elliott portrays Karl, Elle’s ex-husband – she left him for a same sex partner – who harbors a resentment toward circumstances in their relationship. The two meet along the way to the clinic, and the resentment boils to the surface.

The cast of "Community" has come a long way from where they were when the comedy premiered on NBC in 2009 to where they are now as "Community" begins its latest rebirth on Yahoo. Not to take anything away from the career arcs of Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi or Alison Brie, but Jim Rash's journey from comic day player perhaps best known for a resemblance to Moby to beloved supporting performer, Oscar-winning screenwriter and acclaimed indie director seems like the biggest leap. American Sniper, directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Bradley Cooper, sets out to tell his story from his early days as a Texas youth, through his four tours in Iraq and his subsequent attempt to return to family life with his wife and two children. Eastwood clumsily directs Jason Hall's (Paranoia) clumsier script, based on Kyle's own memoir, bringing a little bit of energy to the story with Kyle's time in Iraq, mixed with embarrassing, soap opera level melodrama whenever he returns home. However, even the Iraq moments feel false as anyone making a film involving Navy SEALs better pay close attention to Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty as she set a high bar for anyone hoping to capture the intensity of tactical warfare with a sense of authenticity.

Just call him the Sexiest Sniper Alive. Bradley Cooper worked hard to get in shape to play real-life Navy Seal Chris Kyle in the Clint Eastwood-directed American Sniper. People caught up with writer-producer Jason Hall for the inside scoop on how Cooper trained to become the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history. In order to bulk up 40-plus lbs., Cooper "had a strict, crazy diet," Hall says. "He was eating about every 55 minutes or something like that, and I want to say it was about 8,000 calories a day." "Bradley used his own trainer, who was busting on him.

Last week, I asked a simple question: Is the DC Cinematic Universe–the Warner Bros. back-of-the-napkin plan to launch an all-out assault on Marvel Studios by unleashing a double-digit boatload of superhero movies between now and 2020–actually a thing? Will the Man of Steel-verse actually transform into a cape-ier alternative to the Avengers-verse? Or is this a Valiant-Comics-in-1992 thing–a situation where all the elaborate and ambitious universe-building plans will ultimately dead-end...
