Exclusive: Oscar winner Brandon Oldenburg (The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore) will make his feature animation directing debut on Mouschi: The Cat Who Lived with Anne Frank — a new film based on the children’s book The Cat Who Lived with Anne Frank by David Lee Miller (My Suicide) and Steven Jay Rubin (Silent Night).
Billed as The Lion King meets Inglorious Basterds, Mouschi is a work of fantastical, historical fiction, reimagining the cat who lived with Anne Frank as an Amsterdam swashbuckler who becomes a freedom fighting hero of the Dutch Animal Resistance.
The Penguin imprint Philomel published the book with illustrations by Elizabeth Baddeley in 2019. Miller and Rubin penned the...

AnimationFix: Your regular round-up of the latest animation news, from HitFix reporter Emily Rome Moonbot Studios released their latest animated short online this week, and it’s a sweet ode to imagination and forever being a child at heart. The five-minute short, Taking Flight, is also a tribute to Antonio Pasin, inventor of the Radio Flyer wagon and depicts a small boy’s boring day that turns into an adventure spent with his grandfather. It’s cute, and it has a timely if oft-heard message urging kids (and adults!) to stop looking at their screens all the time and get outside. But the film falls short of the creativity and unique charm of Moonbot’s first short, The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, an ode to the power of story and a tale of renewal inspired by the destruction left by Hurricane Katrina. That short, which used a hybrid of stop-motion,...

The Annie Awards are the most ebullient part of the awards season, always beaming with a real love for animated film. You can tell just by looking at yesterday’s list of nominees, which includes a whopping eight films in its Best Animated Feature category. The Los Angeles branch of the International Animated Film Association, which runs the show, seems to prioritize quantity and excitement over self-serious rule-making. The whole list feels like an enormous, giddy smile. The biggest hit yesterday morning was The Boxtrolls, with a grand total of 13 nominations. Almost as much love was given to How to Train Your Dragon 2, which was mentioned ten times. Even Cyndi Lauper made the list, nominated for a direct-to-dvd baseball drama to which she lent her voice. Yet while that film might be a bit hard to find, some of the shorts that made the roster are already online. Eight films are nominated for Best Animated Short...

Moonbot Studios, who won the 2012 Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film with "The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore," has just released a new animated short entitled "Silent." The film is anything but silent, following two aspiring silent film technicians who happen upon a magical organ. The fantastic instrument transports them through a vibrant evolution of cinematic sight and sound, with the film's sound created by Oscar-nominated sound designer Steve Boeddeker ("All Is Lost"). "Silent" debuted at the Scientific and Technical Academy Awards on February 15th.

You can call it branded entertainment, but we'll call "The Scarecrow," the lyrical video from the Oscar-winning animators at Moonbot Studios, a short film -- a really lovely short film. With cinematic nods to both "The Wizard of Oz" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," the animated film contains some of the same sweet whimsy and luscious images as those classic live-action ones. Setting the video to Fiona Apple's cover of "Pure Imagination" from "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" was an inspired choice. Just as Chipotle did with their "Back to the Start" video in 2011, they have created something here that is beyond spurring social conversation and creating warm feelings about the brand. This film, which has the dark undertones of a Tim Burton film, evokes genuine feelings and -- dare we say? -- aspires to real levels of art. Moonbot, which won an Academy Award for Best Animated...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed its 276-member-strong class of 2013.
The list, published by The Hollywood Reporter, includes actors, cinematographers, designers, directors, documentarians, executives, film editors, makeup artists and hairstylists, "members-at-large," musicians, producers, PR folks, short filmmakers and animators, sound technicians, visual effects artists, and writers.
Jason Bateman, Rosario Dawson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Milla Jovovich, Lucy Liu, Jennifer Lopez, Emily Mortimer, Sandra Oh, Jason Schwartzman, and Michael Peña are among the roster of actors, while "The Heat" and "Bridesmaids" helmer Paul Feig made the directors' cut.
"We did not change our criteria at all," says Academy president Hawk Koch of this year's larger-than-usual class. "Yes, this year there is a tremendous amount of women, a tremendous amount of people of color, people from all walks of life. This year, we asked the branches to look at everybody who wasn't in the Academy but who deserved to be.

The catch: “Diggs” is a Wonderbook game, the strangely under-utilized peripheral Sony announced almost a year ago at E3. Since then, only one game has been released for it: J. K. Rowling’s “Book of Spells.”
Still, “Diggs” seems interesting -- albeit a bit cutesy and kid-oriented -- if only for Moonbot’s pedigree. As the gameplay trailer and dev diary point out, the studio won an Academy Award for The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore.

Watching Moonbot Studios’ Kickstarter campaign for “The Golem,” I can help get the impression that they’re punching above their weight: they need to raise a lot of money in the next few weeks.
Still, you don’t win an Academy Award -- as Moonbot did for the short film, “The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore” -- without making some friends, and the team have enlisted Guillermo del Toro to the cause. “Moonbot has some of the finest storytellers in the world,” the “Pan’s Labyrinth” director enthuses in a recent video update to the project. “I believe in them. “I believe Bill and his team are the ones to make it happen,” del Toro continues, noting that they’ll be working together on a “Golem” proposed film.

"Rise of the Guardians" marks another turning point for DreamWorks Animation with its sincere embrace of pure enchantment. "The Avengers"-like take on protecting children with Santa, the Easter Bunny, the Sandman, the Tooth Fairy, and Jack Frost is as far from "Shrek" as you can get. At the same time, "Guardians" doesn't get as dramatic as "How to Train Your Dragon." So it's definitely a tricky proposition to uphold innocence in this age of post-modern cynicism. But that's always been part of Oscar-winning William Joyce's retro ethos ("The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore"). He takes ther film right to that Wicked Witch of the West place where it's deliciously terrifying yet not too scary for kids to be afraid to look at the screen. Thus, the "Guardians" is an inspired reinvention of folk tale mythology that taps into the superhero hunger so prevalent today. And for first-time.

For all that it is, I enjoyed Rise of the Guardians as a film that offers a twist to the iconic holiday and mythological characters adults tell their children about, and does so in a way that doesn't taint what attracts us to these characters in the first place. This isn't to say you should expect anything too far outside the norm from a storytelling perspective, but the fact it's based on the book by William Joyce, whose magical animated short film The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore won the Oscar last year, should give some allusion to the imagination that inspired it into being. Adapted by David Lindsay-Abaire, whose genre reach spreads from Inkheart to Rabbit Hole as well as a hand in scripting an upcoming Poltergeist remake, Rise of the Guardians begins by introducing us to the titular Guardians -- Santa Claus (voiced by Alec Baldwin...

Rise of the Guardians will be honored at the 16th Annual Hollywood Film Awards with the Hollywood Animation Award, which means they either know something we don't yet or it's simply a preemptive effort to name the Best Animated Feature Oscar winner before anyone has even seen the film. Either way, it doesn't hurt the film's chances at being recognized next February as the animated race for Oscar is certainly still wide open at this point, though right now my high expectations for Wreck-It Ralph make it my personal favorite at the moment. Upcoming fantasy adventure Rise of the Guardians is to receive this year's Hollywood Animation Award.
The 16th Annual Hollywood Film Festival and Hollywood Film Awards announced that the DreamWorks Animation project will receive the accolade at the festival's gala ceremony on October 22, 2012, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.
Directed by Peter Ramsey and written by Pulitzer Prize winner David Lindsay-Abaire, Rise of the Guardians is based on the children's books by William Joyce.

Why is it that an animated film can cause more of a stirrup of emotions inside of a person than most of the live-action films out there? Okay, let me put it this way-- they can make you cry like a baby and you have no shame telling the world about it. I'm looking at you, Up. I'm also talking about Wall-e. Recently during a viewing of The Fantastic Flying Books Of Mr. Morris Lessmore, I spent most of the short crying like I was left on a dock alone like Dawson Leery. Now Disney is releasing...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences brings you the Oscars (yep, that's why they're called Academy Awards), and on Friday, the organization announced that it was prepared to invite 176 new folks to its fold.
In a list posted on its website, the Academy deemed Matthew McConaughey, Jean Dujardin, Terrence Malick, Jonah Hill, Berenice Bejo, Jessica Chastain, Octavia Spencer and a host of other film luminaries worthy of inclusion in its nearly 6,000-member army.
The Academy has drawn the ire of critics who bemoan its overwhelmingly male, white population. A Los Angeles Times investigation found that of all Academy members, 94 percent are Caucasian and 77 percent are male. A mere 2 percent are black, with Latinos constituting an even smaller portion. Only 14 percent of members are under the age of 50.
Full members of the Academy select and vote on Oscars nominees. The organization was started in 1927 and is now governed by a 43-person board.

Because you loved seeing Josh Hutcherson fight off bad guys in a forest setting for "The Hunger Games," he's going back into the woods, only this time he's animated.
The Hutch came on "Good Morning America" today to introduce the trailer for a very aptly named "Epic," the latest effort from the CGI wizards at Blue Sky Studios and director Chris Wedge, which will likely be attached to July 13's "Ice Age: Continental Drift."
Virtually dialogue-free, the trailer is set to the haunting chords of "What If This Storm Ends?," by Snow Patrol, and ushers us into an exotic fantasy world with creatures derived from leaves, dandelions and tiny warriors who ride on saddles atop hummingbirds. They're fighting a battle of good against evil with the help of a teenage girl from our world.
Of course we say "virtually" free of a dialogue, as there is a hilarious tag at...

There’s a new Pixar movie opening this weekend! This is exciting for a number of reasons, the biggest of which has nothing to do with Brave. Pixar flicks give mainstream audiences the lone annual opportunity to see a short film on the big screen. My personal favorite might be Day & Night, which played before Toy Story 3 two years ago, but this year’s short is definitely in the running. La Luna has already been nominated for the Best Animated Short Oscar, losing back in February to The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore. Now that it’s attached to Brave, a much wider audience will get to experience the marvel of short form animation. La Luna made its world premiere last year at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, the world’s...

Though "Brave," the latest animated feature from Pixar, hits theaters this weekend, there's already been a whirlwind of discussion surrounding the movie's impact. Why? Because it's Pixar's first film to feature a female lead: the independently-minded Princess Merida of Scotland, a fiery redhead who argues with her parents because they expect her to follow tradition and find a suitor as soon as possible. Instead, she decides to control her own fate, inadvertently sending her on a magical adventure involving mythic bears of folklore. Pixar movies have become a summer tradition at the box office, but how will this new cinematic endeavor play to the masses? Let's find out in this week's Pro-Con. (Mild Spoilers Follow) Pro: "Brave" is a simple fairy-tale adventure that appeals to young audiences. The humor is youthfully cute, the pace is refreshingly brisk and the adventure is imaginative and straightforward. This is Pixar's spin on a classic fairy tale,...

Santa Claus has graced the silver screen in countless holiday movies, and this November, he’s back again. But this time, in DreamWorks Animation’s Rise of the Guardians, he’s joined by a crew of other creatures that accompany the visions of sugar plums in children’s heads. Today Paramount, which is distributing the film, released a series of character posters featuring a formidable Easter Bunny, a birdlike Tooth Fairy and four other characters. In the film, these classic characters are all known by nicknames – Santa is North, the Easter Bunny is E. Aster Bunnymund – but on the posters,...

Earlier this year we featured the entire Oscar winning animated short film (The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore) and, despite my love for Pixar and their film La Luna, it was easy to see why it won the Oscar. It's the same case here again, with the short that won the 2011 BAFTA for Best Animated Short, titled The Eagleman Stag about "Peter Eagleman", made by UK animator Mikey Please. The short is beautifully stop-motion animated and made out of this white, foam that adds a very unique aesthetic to the overall story. I always love discovering great work like this and I highly suggest seeing the entire film below. Thanks to Colossal for first finding this. It is now available in full from their official website or watch it here: Here's an excerpt from Short of the Week which also covers the plot: "Animated through stop-motion, the film...

Chicago – Now that most of the big summer movies have already had their trailers hit the internet, studios are realizing that we’ve probably decided whether or not we’re seeing “Avengers” (yes) or “Battleship” (no), and, as such, they’re now releasing previews for some of their more interesting films coming out later this year. In their minds, the marketing battle for Summer 2012 is already over and now it’s time to turn our attention to the fall and holidays seasons.
Frankly, though I love big, blockbuster, $300-million-dollar previews, it’s nice to get a look at how movie studios plan to thrill us for the rest of the year. And, from the looks of these trailers, it seems like their main strategy is to wow us with high concept premises. What do I mean by “high concept”? I mean, big gimmicky wild ideas. We’re not talking about...

Have you ever believed in something so strongly that you made it real?
William Joyce definitely has.
The artist and storyteller, who wrote the books Dinosaur Bob and George Shrinks and did character design for the movies Toy Story and Robots, wanted his daughter, Mary Katherine, and son, Jack, to have no shadow of doubt that Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy were real. So he began planting evidence — like a bad cop, or maybe the world’s best dad.

Forget "The Avengers," because Dreamworks Animation has the year's Real event team-up movie. All of the most famous pagan aspects of the holidays are combined into one rollicking adventure in "Rise of the Guardians."
As seen in the new debut trailer at Apple Trailers, this amazing looking fable presupposes that childhood icons like Santa, Easter Bunny, Sandman and the Tooth Fairy not only exist but occasionally form an elite squadron to destroy evil, in this case Pitch, the Nightmare King (a.k.a. The Boogeyman) voiced by Jude Law. Alec Baldwin leads this A-Team — or should that be H-Team? — as a European accented St. Nick, Hugh Jackman goes from wolverine to bunny, Isla Fisher as a toothsome Fairy and Chris Pine as a jolly Jack Frost nipping at your nose.

A new trailer for DreamWorks latest animated film, Rise of the Guardians, has just hit the web and the sense of wonderment and scope is stunning. Based on the books of William Joyce, the flick twists the modern day fairytales in an interesting and fresh way by throwing a handful together to fight evil. Oh, that’s been done before? Well, not like this.
Executive produced by Guillermo del Toro and Michael Siegel, the imagery jumps off the screen. Joyce, as you may recall, recently won an Oscar for writing and co-directing the animated short The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore. He will co-direct Guardians alongside Peter Ramsey with Pulitzer Prize winner David Lindsay-Abaire behind the script. The film features the voices of Chris Pine, Isla Fisher, Hugh Jackman, Alec Baldwin, and Jude Law. Check it out below via Apple.

Dreamworks has debuted the first trailer for the upcoming CG-animated feature Rise of the Guardians based on the forthcoming books by William Joyce, who just so happened to be a writer on the recent Oscar-winning animated short The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore. Directed by Peter Ramsey (Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space) and co-directed by Joyce, the film features the voices of Chris Pine, Alec Baldwin, Hugh Jackman, Isla Fisher and Jude Law in a story that brings together well-known childhood legends with Baldwin as North (Santa Claus), Jackman as Bunnymund (Easter Bunny) and Fisher as Tooth (Tooth Fairy) as they set out to battle an evil spirit known as Pitch (Law) who lays down the gauntlet to take over the world. The immortal Guardians must join forces for the first time to protect the hopes, beliefs and imagination of children all over the world.

DreamWorks Animation previewed the first footage from its upcoming adventure saga Rise of the Guardians on Wednesday with the most detailed look so far at the movie’s take on some beloved childhood myths.
Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, the Sandman …
Anyone who grew up hearing stories of these figures can conjure an image of them, but the animated feature debuting Nov. 21 this year fuses those kindly characters with a warrior mythology. They don’t just bring candy, presents, and dreams; they are relentless protectors of innocence and imagination locked in an ongoing war against fear itself.

Everybody who claims an Academy Award is feeling pretty good in that moment, but perhaps no pair of winners on Sunday night were walking on air as much as the directors of The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore.
