Since the main character is confined to a wheelchair, the director decided to shoot everything from the height of a wheelchair.
There were important moments of improvisation, one of the most touching when Santos, making love to Porfirio, asks him why he is crying. He answers: "Because I love you."
"I never wrote that," director Landes says. "I never planned that. It happened."
In the movie, Porfirio is shown accompanied by his son Lissin and by his wife Jasbleidy. The first is played by Porfirio's real life youngest son Jarlinsson Ramirez Reinoso and the second is played by Porfirio's real life young neighbor Yor Jasbleidy Santos Torres. In fact Porfirio's real wife has divorced him, and the 55 years old man himself decided that his next door neighbor (a 23 years old single mother) should play his wife. During the filming, a sentimental and sexual relationship was born between Porfirio's and Jasbleidy's persons, which in the film has its proof in the apparently unsimulated sex scenes between them.
In a sex scene Yor Jasbleidy Santos Torres is seen taking Porfirio Ramirez Aldana's erect penis and inserting it in her vagina. Asked about the sequence, Porfirio said that the woman's pleasure was simulated, because "there is not much that [he] can do anyway." In fact he explained that after the accident his body is almost dead from the waist down, he has to take mood-enhancing pills, because otherwise he can't have a strong erection, and with all this, it doesn't last as long as it used to. And the worst thing is that when he ejaculates he doesn't feel anything.
