- Special Agent Hana Gibson: I have a name and a face for our unsub.
- Special Agent Kristin Gaines: Really? How?
- Special Agent Hana Gibson: Magic. My kind of magic. I knew there had to be something with the unidentified DNA. Even though he's not in the database, no criminal record, no military history, with the DNA, we had to get somewhere.
- Supervisory Special Agent Jess LaCroix: So you matched his DNA?
- Special Agent Hana Gibson: Well, not quite. I widened the net to include all familial matches with the database, including NAMUS.
- Supervisory Special Agent Jess LaCroix: Missing persons.
- Special Agent Hana Gibson: Yeah. Now, families of missing persons can upload the missing person's DNA, say, a toothbrush, a coffee cup, a hairbrush, enough for a DNA sample. So our unsub is related to a missing person. There's 99.5% chance that he's the father of a missing girl named Brittany Walsh. Say hello to our fugitive, Caleb Walsh.
- Officer Tyler: We responded to several calls at Brittany Walsh's apartment before she went missing.
- Supervisory Special Agent Jess LaCroix: Domestic abuse calls?
- Officer Tyler: I don't know. Domestic disturbances?
- Special Agent Kristin Gaines: She was dating Craig Osterholm. Was he abusing her?
- Officer Tyler: She'd say he was, then she'd say he wasn't. Never wanted to press charges.
- Supervisory Special Agent Jess LaCroix: Well, that's common with victims of abuse.
- Special Agent Kristin Gaines: When Brittany went missing, did you question Craig?
- Officer Tyler: We're just a tiny town PD. I don't have the manpower or resources to conduct that kind of investigation. So I turned it over to Calvert County Sheriff's Office.
- Supervisory Special Agent Jess LaCroix: Was that Sheriff Lewis?
- Officer Tyler: Yeah. Why?
- Supervisory Special Agent Jess LaCroix: His wife is Jeanine Osterholm's cousin. It didn't seem like a potential conflict to you?
- Officer Tyler: Maybe if I'd known, but I didn't. I just assumed they'd handle it like any other case, like professionals.
- Special Agent Hana Gibson: Update from Jess. Caleb Walsh isn't home. His wife said he went off on his own for a few days. He went crab fishing, but she doesn't know where.
- Special Agent Kristin Gaines: And does Jess believe her?
- Special Agent Hana Gibson: Yeah, he said he thinks she's in the dark. I mean, she's suffering pretty major PTSS in relation to her daughter's disappearance, to the point of delusion. She seemed to think that Jess was there to question her about the day of Brittany's disappearance. She kept going over the timeline of activities on that day.
- Special Agent Kristin Gaines: Well, if that's what Caleb Walsh is living with, then likely, his endgame goes back to his daughter.
- Special Agent Hana Gibson: Brittany Walsh.
- Special Agent Ivan Ortiz: A local kid from Easton. Easton is a rougher part of town than Chesapeake Beach, where the Osterholms live.
- Special Agent Hana Gibson: Her parents reported her missing when she didn't show up for her 20th birthday, which is a year ago tomorrow.
- Special Agent Ivan Ortiz: That could be what triggered Walsh.
- Special Agent Kristin Gaines: What was the outcome of that missing persons investigation?
- Special Agent Hana Gibson: I mean, that was just it. The case was open, but there wasn't much investigating.
- Special Agent Kristin Gaines: Okay, hold on. According to this, Brittany was dating Craig Osterholm.
- Special Agent Ivan Ortiz: The women on campus cancelled Craig, so he went looking for someone with less power on the wrong side of town.
- Special Agent Hana Gibson: Domestic violence is progressive. It doesn't just pop up out of nowhere.
- Special Agent Kristin Gaines: Well, if their relationship was rocky, there might be a record of it. I'll let Jess know.
- Supervisory Special Agent Jess LaCroix: We need to know about your investigation into Brittany Walsh's disappearance.
- Matt Lewis: Walsh. Uh... that was a while back. I... I'd have to look it up.
- Special Agent Kristin Gaines: It was a year ago. Pretty sure you remember it, because her abusive boyfriend is the son of your wife's cousin.
- Matt Lewis: All right, it's not what you think.
- Special Agent Kristin Gaines: Well, what I think is, you failed to investigate the prime suspect in Brittany Walsh's disappearance because he's a relative of yours.
- Matt Lewis: All right, now hold on. All right, it's not like there was much of a case to begin with.
- Supervisory Special Agent Jess LaCroix: She's still missing.
- Matt Lewis: You know what? Sometimes adults leave. They just take off. That doesn't mean there was anything criminal going on.
- Special Agent Kristin Gaines: [to Jess] Is he really saying that with a straight face?
- Supervisory Special Agent Jess LaCroix: Did you know that Craig Osterholm was abusing her?
- Matt Lewis: No. No charges were ever filed. Every time she made a complaint, she withdrew it. Now, I had no intention of dragging Craig's good name, his family's good name, through the mud, you know, based on some rumors.
- Supervisory Special Agent Jess LaCroix: Is that what you told Brittany's parents when they were desperately trying to find their missing daughter?
- Special Agent Kristin Gaines: You may think you did the Osterholms a favor. Think about it this way, Sheriff. You set in motion the events that caused the murders of Jeanine and Darcy. They were killed because Craig Osterholm had a hand in the disappearance of a young woman with no name to speak of. And law enforcement did nothing to try to find her. You did nothing, and now you live with that.
- Supervisory Special Agent Jess LaCroix: You'll need to resign, effective immediately. I'm reporting you to Internal Affairs and the FBI's Public Integrity unit.
- Joe: I tried talking to the Sheriff's Office when Brittany first went missing, but they didn't want to listen to what I had to say.
- Special Agent Hana Gibson: We're here now. We're listening. She lived upstairs?
- Joe: Lived upstairs, worked down here.
- Special Agent Ivan Ortiz: Is this where she met Craig Osterholm?
- Joe: Yeah. Never really understood why a college kid with money was hanging out here. I warned Britt to be on guard, but she thought he was her Prince Charming.
- Special Agent Hana Gibson: Was he?
- Joe: He screamed at her all the time, so loud I could hear him down here when the bar was packed. I called the cops a few times. They'd go up there, but nothing ever came of it.
- Special Agent Ivan Ortiz: Did she ever leave him?
- Joe: Threatened to all the time, but in the end, he'd sweet-talk her or take her away for a few days. And that's what happened at the end. They'd had a real blowout.
- Special Agent Hana Gibson: Then they went away together.
- Joe: Craig's family has a house out on Lake Moffat. She packed an overnight bag, and they drove off in Craig's car. But she never came back.
- Special Agent Ivan Ortiz: Thank you.
- Special Agent Ivan Ortiz: [entering with Jess] Caleb Walsh! FBI! Put the gun down.
- Caleb Walsh: What are you doing here?
- Special Agent Ivan Ortiz: We're here because of Brittany.
- Caleb Walsh: You're too late. Just like all the rest of them. He killed her and shoved her body in that freezer. He didn't even hide her. My Brittany's been in that freezer all this time, dead, and nobody helped bring her home.
- Supervisory Special Agent Jess LaCroix: I know it, and I'm sorry. She deserved better.
- Caleb Walsh: You think I don't know that? You think I didn't try to get justice for her?
- Supervisory Special Agent Jess LaCroix: I know you did.
- Caleb Walsh: The Osterholm name meant more than my daughter's life.
- Supervisory Special Agent Jess LaCroix: I know. And it's not right. But Brittany wouldn't want you doing this.
- Caleb Walsh: How do you know?
- Supervisory Special Agent Jess LaCroix: Because I have a daughter. And I worry about her all the time. All the time. I know what you went through. It's like... It's like living in hell. But Caleb, this isn't the way.
- Caleb Walsh: What happened at the house... I didn't mean for it to happen. I only wanted to take Darcy with me for leverage, take their daughter like mine was taken, and then give her back when they told me where Brittany was. But then, nothing worked out right.
- Supervisory Special Agent Jess LaCroix: I understand.
- Caleb Walsh: I only wanted to know what happened to Brittany. Her mother needs to know.
- Supervisory Special Agent Jess LaCroix: And now you know. Let us take him into custody. He'll go to prison for what he did, I promise you. Isn't that worse than killing him?
- Special Agent Ivan Ortiz: Caleb, give me the gun. Let it go. Hands behind your back. Let's go.
- Special Agent Hana Gibson: Hey. You okay?
- Supervisory Special Agent Jess LaCroix: Yeah.
- Special Agent Hana Gibson: We got them all, Jess. Caleb Walsh, Craig Osterholm, Sheriff Lewis. He just handed in his gun and badge.
- Supervisory Special Agent Jess LaCroix: All of this because of one family. The power, the privilege, the entitlement. It's a funny thing, isn't it?
- Special Agent Hana Gibson: It definitely seems unfair.
- Supervisory Special Agent Jess LaCroix: Did make me realize something.
- Special Agent Hana Gibson: What?
- Supervisory Special Agent Jess LaCroix: I have a lot to be grateful for.
- Special Agent Hana Gibson: Maybe you should do something about it.
