This is another in the innumerable series of street scenes turned out in the early and middle 1890s. The impulse was to offer the illusion of travel to distant lands and well-known locations -- and once you've taken a look at the local clothes and noted the famous landmark, they're pretty much all the same. They're more more or less crowds of people heading on their busy way whether it's Dresden, Manhattan, London or Bangkok.
That said, this example from the Lumieres ranks above the middle of the pack of this particular genre. Their compositions were always impeccable. Furthermore, their cameraman set scene so that there is a police officer directing traffic at the center of the action. That creates a flow of movement that most others lack.
