Decent add on to the Paranormal Activity series
TheFinalGirl1319 July 2020
I enjoyed this sequel more than American Paranormal Activity 2. The pace is much faster and the characters are more likeable. The movie is nicely connected to the other Activities and doesn't feel out of place. Still not a thrilling movie, but, in my opinion, none of the PA movies are. I liked the ending - whenever you think everything is over, you get something more. The movie does mirror the first PA a lot (some scenes are very similar), but still felt different enough and wasn't boring to watch. I wouldn't call it a masterpiece of the horror genre, but comparing to the other Paranormal Activities this is one of the best.

Tokyo Night is a tepid and lackluster sequel...
jmaruyama3 April 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Nagae Toshikazu's Japanese-made sequel to the American horror sensation "Paranormal Activity" (2009) is a tedious and somewhat confusing film that tries to go for the pseudo-documentary/found footage style look of the original but soon degenerates to a by-the-numbers shock film. Its over-the-top finale is self-indulgent and shatters any realism that the film had hoped to accomplish.

"Paranormal Activity 2: Tokyo Nights" supposedly takes place after the events of "Paranormal Activity"(Tokyo Night was released at around the same time as the American-made sequel "Paranormal Activity 2"). Pretty college student Yamano Haruka (Aoyama Noriko) has returned to Tokyo after getting involved in a severe car accident in San Diego, California where she was studying. She broke both of her legs in the car crash and is now recuperating at her younger brother Koichi's (Nakamura Aoi) house in Tokyo.

No sooner after settling into the two-story house, does strange and unsettling occurrences begin to happen - weird thumping noises are heard in the night, glasses break without explanation, doors open and close by themselves etc. Believing the house to be possessed by evil spirits they call upon a Shinto Priest to do a traditional blessing of the house but to no avail. Soon the poltergeist effects escalate and intensify. Haruka later reveals that the person that she struck with her car in California was none-other-than Katie from the first movie. Haruka surmises that the supposed demon that possessed Katie has now latched on to her.

Nagae Toshikazu is no stranger to the ghost/horror genre having directed "Ghost System" and "Gakko No Kaidan" but as with those films, his tendency to overplay the fear factor does do a disservice to the audience. The pacing and tone of "Tokyo Night" was also a bit weak.

Some of the scenes seem forced and scripted and did not seem to attempt to go for any sense of realism. It was also unconvincing how "conveniently" Koichi was able to capture all these paranormal events on his camera at the precise moment of their occurrence. There didn't seem to be any battery-time limitations to his camera and they seemed to always be on even during the most mundane of sequences.

Aoyama Noriko and Nakayama Aoi do decent work as the haunted siblings but their acting shifts wildly from good to over-the-top.

While Tod Williams' "Paranormal Activity 2" was also a disappointment compared to Oren Peli's original, it still tried to distinguish itself from the original (the use of night-vision technology, expanding on the back story of the original movie etc.) Nagae seems to want to go the other way and draw as much inspiration from the original as he can even going so far as borrowing the same sequences from the original. "Tokyo Night's" only distinction seems to the the setting (Tokyo) and the fact that Haruka is unable to walk (which they don't seem to play up as much as they should have).

It would have been much more interesting if Nagae could have been more inventive with the story (have the setting in an apartment complex or have Koichi broadcast the events to YouTube etc.) It was interesting to see the Shinto blessing/exorcism rituals and I wish they would have played that up more.

In the end, "Paranormal Activity 2: Tokyo Night" seemed to be more like a "one-trick pony". A shameless tie-in and gimmick movie that piggy backs on the success of a much better film.

solid, but not great
GeraE15 May 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I bought this for 10 pesos and it's about the right price for it. The sound effects are as creepy as the first one and the movements of the possessed actress are quite good. As others have mentioned, there's a little twist at the end and for some reason it didn't seem as creepy as the rest of the film.

Unlike the other films, there's no real explanation as to why the entity chooses this pair of siblings to play with.

Another aspect that must be mentioned is that it's pretty true to the formula, so if you liked the other two you'll probably dig this one too.

Overall, if you can get your hands on it secondhand or used, then by all means get it. Full DVD price, I don't think so.

remake of the original one
trashgang5 March 2012
Toshikazu Nagae, the director already made a horror in 2002, Gosuto shisutemu. 8 years later he picked in on the success of Paranormal Activity. It is said that it was a sequel to the original one but I guess that it was said for promotional reasons only. This is just a remake from the original one. Funny, we are used to see it go otherwise. Normally Japanese flicks are remade by Hollywood.

You love or hate the Paranormal franchise. I like them but with this one I missed something. For me the best part were the last 20 minutes. The movie starts with the telling of a girl coming back from the states after a carcrash. Almost after 5 minutes in this flick things go wrong but what I didn't like was that her brother already guessed that an entity was in the house. And from there on it's a pure rip-off of the original. Of course the ghost is being cast out by a priest in Japanese rituals, that's the only difference but towards the end we get that typical The Grudge or Ringu girls, you know the face when you see it.

I never really jumped while watching or ever got a creepy feeling because I have seen it all before. And don't get me wrong, PA3 did give me some goosebumps. But then again I wouldn't recommend it for those who are easily afraid because it all happens at home.

It fits perfectly in the franchise (as did Paranormal Entity)but yes, I think most geeks will hate it.

It's just alright
krithikrs6 September 2023
Tokyo Night is... strange. It was released right when the actual Paranormal Activity 2 came out and is supposed to be a forgotten side-quel(?) which is not even canon anymore. This is a shame because I enjoyed it way more than most of the actual sequels that came out in this franchise. That's not to say that Tokyo Night is some misunderstood gem. It's mostly just a retread of the first film, but this time in Japan. I was expecting it to put a J-horror flair on the Western Paranormal Activity formula but it didn't do anything to carve out its own identity. Although it did manage to somehow terrify me during its last 20 minutes but I do think that it needed a bit more ambitious approach. Unfortunately, Tokyo Night is a strange anomaly that has been forgotten in time because it couldn't be bold and just did more of what already became tired after the first Paranormal Activity.

The Remake of a Bad Film May Be Better, but Never a Great Film
claudio_carvalho24 October 2011
Haruka Yamano (Noriko Aoyama) returns from America to Tokyo in a wheelchair with both legs with multiple fractures in a car accident and is helped by her father and her brother Koichi Yamano (Aoi Nakamura). Their father travels to Singapore for business meetings and Koichi takes care of his sister and films her most of the time with his camera.

On the next morning, Haruka tells that her wheelchair had moved during the night and Koichi check the windows of her room to see if a stranger has broken in their house. He tells that probably a spirit had moved the wheelchair and he uses salt near the door of Haruka's bedroom to protect her against evil spirits. However, on the next morning they find that the salt is spread near the door. He checks the tape and believes that the house is haunted by a ghost. He decides to tape his room too and along the days, weird noises and events happen in the house.

They invite the priest Saionji to purify the house against ghosts and along four days nothing unusual happens. Haruka tells to Koichi that, in America, she had hit a woman called Katie that had just murdered her boyfriend and appeared in front of her car. Their father returns home but he needs to travel again. But on the fifth night they see in the tape that the house is still haunted. Koichi decides to call Saionji again, but they learn that the priest had died five nights ago after leaving their house. Haruka discloses to her brother that weird things had happened to her also in America. Further, she tells that she had researched the life of Katie and had found that the girl was also haunted by ghosts. Now the fiend is more violent and still haunts the siblings and they do not know what to do.

The low-budget "Paranômaru Akutibiti: Dai-2-shô - Tokyo Night" is a remake of "Paranormal Activity", with a similar story. After the original "The Blair Witch Project", many low-budget movies made with hand-held camera have been released. "Paranormal Activity" is ridiculously overrated but this Japanese remake is better than the original. However, the remake of a bad film may be even better, but never a great film. Last but not the least, this is the first time that I see a Japanese remake of an American film and both do not worth watching. My vote is four.

More like Tokyo Nights
Fields20118 April 2011
When I first heard about a Japanese take on Paranormal Activity, I thought it was a joke. Then I saw the trailer for it and thought it looked horrible. Being a big fan of Paranormal Activity films, I really wanted to see it. Unfortunately, they didn't release it here in America, and I'm still waiting. However, I managed to get that chance to watch it but I couldn't understand a word they were saying since there was no subtitles on the transfer I saw.

To be honest, this film feels just like the first Paranormal Activity. It begins with the guy in front of the mirror adjusting his camera, a lot like Micah's opening scene on the first one. Then he goes out to his driveway to a car where some girl is..... hmmm... feels like the first Paranormal Activity again. But unlike the first Paranormal Activity, it begins with something happening early on in the film. He puts a mound of sugar on the door and finds out that it mysteriously gets wiped all over the floor.

I also like that they kept the whole Night #1 title card that the Paranormal Activity films have. The unfortunate thing is that the first half of the film just feels like a rehash of the first one. Doors opening and closing, the girl screams out of her sleep, sometimes just going nuts for some reason. As I'm watching, I'm waiting for something different to happen. It has to offer something new eventually.

It does.

For the last thirty minutes or so of the film, things get a little crazy. There's a moment in the film that is creepier than any of the American Paranormal Activity films never achieved. I won't spoil it, but let's just say you will know when you see it. There's also a little twist in the end, where you think it's going to end the same way as the first film.... but it doesn't.

Paranormal Activity 2: Tokyo Night is a worthy entry in the Paranormal Activity series. It does tie into the franchise and worth a watch if you like these films. Next time I see it, I'm watching it with subtitles so I know what they're talking about. There's a lot of slow parts, though. Then again, so did the American versions.

This movie just makes you angry!!
TerribleKatherine9 August 2018
I have come to known Japanese horror movies as a form of art. This piece of tihs is a below average American horror movie, it just happens to be made in Japan. Absolutely nothing even remotely scary happens, just another movie that benefits from Paranormal Activity's success. A prime example of how easy it is to fool the audiences to watch a dozen horrible sequel- prequel- bs when the first one is actually some what decent a movie. I have completely given up on all of the PA-movies, even the 2nd one was garbage.

The only reason why I give this 2 instead of 1/10, is the fact that it is in Japanese and filmed in Japan. But still this makes as much sense as the American ones; e.g. if your sister and/or sister's room is haunted and you want to protect her, why do you sleep in your own room like 2 floors down? You talk about leaving the house but you don't, why won't you? Your sister walks around loudly and you don't wake up on the noise? BS.

No more this, now I will release myself of the horrible franchise that is Paranormal Asstivity. Gomennasai, Arigato gozaimasu.

Meh...
bearfaceproductions16 September 2011
Well... I saw that many people have different views of this movie. Just like the other American Paranormal Activity movies, this one has its pros and cons.

In some aspects it's a little better than the American Version, but in other aspects it's not as good.

When it comes to scary, it delivers pretty much the same amount of frights (and if not somewhat better). When it comes to the story, it drives off from the original story into a new one that doesn't seem so creative. There were some surprising new elements into this installment, some that were good and some that were not as much. The ending was a bit weird, but I thought that was better than the original American ending. I just wish that the script wasn't so rushed.

In short, some aspects are better and some aren't (I wouldn't say worst), yet it's a fine entry to the Paranormal Activity saga, I just think it was a bit unnecessary to do this semi-sequel/semi-remake. But some people differ from this opinion saying it's better than the American Version and some prefer the American one. But this is just my point of view, I think I'll stick to the American version, though I wouldn't mind seeing another Japanese installment.

Every where you go ...
kosmasp12 March 2016
... always take a camera with you, every where you go ... Well that's a version of a popular song, that could apply to this movie as well as to other found footage themed ones. It's more fitting in this case, because of the jump across the "pond" from America to Japan. But even there and with a different culture, evil never sleeps. It might be dragging its feet and its still slower than a turtle (until it puts in the high speed gear that is), but it seems to work its charm every time.

Having a camera while you run for your life or rather catching it and still be able to film coherent material is tricky. But manageable as it seems. All jokes aside, this is a slow burning affair, one that is considered to belong to the Pananormal Activity universe. For whatever reason, other than to make money of advertising and compel to the Asian market that is of course ...

Better the US sequel
atinder17 August 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This movie Japanese spin off or there own sequel to the original American Paranormal Activity.

Her brother is filming (One of the others reviews already said it start, so I not going repeat that) his sister Home coming, she as just back from US but involved in Car crash, that broke her legs and as to be in wheel chair, Brother has to care of her until she get back on her feet.

This movie did have the some of same idea like US one but they use it different way as it they put bit of salt on floor but it get blown away, it just like powder scene in US version which is was much better scene.

Also liked the fact that girl was pulled by her hair in this movie and dragged from the bed. (Hair replaced the ankle)

They soon found that girl who died in crash in US, pass evil thing to her after the crash.

It may seem a bit like of re-harsh of the first movie for most of time, the ending was really good,

Some really good entertaining moments near the end and some really good scare that creepy you out (scary stuff that happens out of the house)

I enjoyed this movie a lot more then US sequel.

Really good movie

Much better than the original
eyestoremember11 March 2013
Being so much hyped i had watched in my college time the original Paranormal activity and let me be very frank found it too over hyped. I was disappointed. Is this better? that would be saying the obvious and the effort shows especially in the writing.

The acting is good and i found it to be one of the few satisfying horror flicks...The jumps may not be much but the chill is eerie...

I will say this that i did like the film...not a great film may be but definitely a one time treat for the horror fans and even for its found footage style it rarely bores you Now how many flicks can say that? Go for it if you ask me!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Japanese retelling of the Paranormal Activity films
Leofwine_draca7 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
A film that remains hard to get hold of outside of its native Japan, PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: TOKYO NIGHT is a straightforward Japanese remake of the US hit horror flick PARANORMAL ACTIVITY. Hey, it makes a change from all those remakes of Japanese horror films, right? I'm not sure whether this was an officially licensed film or not, but it's a general disappointment, although fans of J-horror might still enjoy it.

The story sees a Japanese girl returning home from America to live with her brother in Tokyo. She's been injured in a car accident, which left both of her legs broken; after a while, it transpires that the accident involved the Katie character from the original PARANORMAL ACTIVITY (this twist was my favourite moment in the film). Soon enough weird paranormal stuff starts to take place, none of which will be a surprise to anybody who's watched any of the other movies.

Like most remakes, this is pretty much a pointless film if you've seen the original as the format sticks very close. Many of the set-up scare scenes are the same, albeit with Japanese twists on the formula (like the scene with the priest). The acting is acceptable as are the effects, but the air of familiarity that hangs over the production is, in the end, its detraction as we literally have "seen it all before".

I swear, that bich's annoying ass squealing made me wanna rip my ears off, and almost hurled my laptop across my room. Unnecessary, annoying long squealing. Why are most Japanese girls annoying like that?

Not scary at all
alanintalan26 May 2019
Very boring because of the slow pace of the movie. Does the director have a foot fetish because there were a couple scenes of some close up's of her feet...just an observation. Last part of the movie was partly reminiscent of Paranormal Activity. Overall, not worth watching again

not memorable
henriqueac-6278327 December 2022
Not an out of the box movie. Not being innovative is actually common. It is hard to do something unique. The movie is not bad though. Nakamura is good in his brother hole, trying to help his sister and such. Perhaps the plot should involve the two youngsters seeking for more help. Perhaps those friends who came by their house should have said something more. I don't know how big was this movie's budget, maybe it does lack some more action scenes. Maybe some knifes flying through the kitchen would do the trick. However, that ending owes me no excuses. The girl all of a sudden makes me lose it...

It's not worth watching!
Baifrank3 November 2022
A really disappointing film and that nothing represents the official franchise, although it is not canonical at all.

There is no connection, there is no understanding with what happens in the course and you, already in the first half-hour, realized that apparently it will be something that will not be worth your wasted time, you will begin to demonstrate that it is very monotonous and is much more a comedy that is being told by one of the protagonists than a movie that will cause you scares, will give you total pleasure in watching and more.

Unfortunately it has nothing to do with the original franchise and that was too disheartening. I hope that if there is ever another non-canonical one that will at least be more pleasant.

This explains PA4
dutchchocolatecake21 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I think one reason why people didn't like PA4 is because it seemed so random and without reason that "Robby" would come over to stay at the neighbor's house while Katie was in the hospital. Paranormal Activity 2: Tokyo Night fills in this gap.

This is a fairly slow moving movie, but I enjoyed it. I think if the version I watched had better subtitles, I might have concentrated less on what was trying to be conveyed and more on the characters. I am giving this a 10 star rating because it does not deserve 5.0 stars at all.

The ending is very freaky for sure. I don't scare easily either. I like how they spliced the footage from the house and the footage from the morgue to finish it. I think multi-footage adds some realism to the genre.

An interesting sequel
jomcma12 January 2021
When I heard of this sequel I was curious, but couldn't find a way to watch it because it is in Japanese and finding a copy with subtitles is very hard. Once I was able to find a copy and finally watched it I will say if you are a fan of Paranormal Activity films this is worth trying to find a way to watch it. I wouldn't normally give something this high of a score, but it had some scenes that were creepy. This is coming from someone who is considered a hardcore horror fan if that means anything. If you can find a way to watch it I would definitely recommend it, but if you don't speak Japanese you will have to find a copy that has subtitles which is near impossible and they are possibly bootlegged. Good luck and enjoy the film if you get a chance. I thought it was worth hunting down.
