Overall, I thought the experience was enjoyable. It had a similar feel to the movie "See For Me", which I found entertaining and engaging. The pacing was good and it kept me interested throughout. There were some great moments that made me laugh, as well as a few touching scenes that left an impression on me afterwards. All in all, it was an enjoyable experience and worth checking out if you're looking for something different from your usual fare!

I would highly recommend giving this movie a chance if you're looking for something fresh yet familiar in terms of content delivery - there is certainly enough here to keep viewers engaged without feeling overwhelmed or bored at any point during its runtime either!

Flawed, But Fun.
meddlecore8 May 2023
Stylistically, Unseen is a pretty decent film.

It's got a bit of a cult vibe to it.

And the idea is pretty cool - a legally (though, not fully) blind woman, having been taken hostage by her psychopathic ex boyfriend, escapes, and gets lost wandering aimlessly in the woods, while trying to find her way to safety.

But conceptually, it's inherently flawed.

Mainly, because...if you were trying to escape from someone in the woods...the first rule of survival would to be as quiet as humanly possible.

Not talking incessantly on your phone at full volume, shooting the shizz with the random convenience store clerk you accidentally called to help you navigate your way back to civilization.

Humourously, most of the tension arises from the banal issues the convenience store clerk must deal with- in her bid to help save her new friend- as opposed to the situation the woman actually fleeing for her life finds herself in.

While, ironically, it's the psychopath stalker who ends up taking the brunt of the physical punishment.

The fact that everything is flipped on it's head, makes for quite a fun and engaging film.

So you quickly forget about it's more fatal flaws - like how her phone still works after falling into the river.

And just roll with the punches.

Because it's more rewarding to focus on what works...than dwell on the bits that don't, because they are completely implausible.

No matter which way you look at it, however...you've got to admit...it's pretty damn entertaining.

With lots of action, a decent amount of tension, and some truly hilarious scenarios.

So if you can go into it with an open mind, you're sure to enjoy yourself.

And leave knowing...that not all heroes wear smocks.

But some do.

5.5 out of 10.

Clever and Tension Driven with Some Flaws
zack_gideon9 March 2023
Enjoyable indie movie that dumps you into a real life crazy situation immediately. The concept of this is pretty cool. I won't write spoilers but it's another tech type thriller involving FaceTime to help a woman literally see thru it (thus the title).

It's cleverly directed, using split screens and some other techniques to keep the audience on edge. The characters are pretty well developed and it drives pretty solid tension throughout.

On the downside it's predictable to a certain degree, the ancillary characters are way too over the top and some of the character decisions might make you say "come on now wtf". But given that, it's effective and quick too so you don't get off track for the most part.

There's some ridiculous "suspend reality" moments and it's tries a bit too hard to be comedic with cartoonish characters but it's still effective.

I would recommend if you like a quick 75 minute run time and some thriller/action/creativity. 6.3/10.

Surprisingly good movie
kkd-5284920 August 2023
I watched the film not expecting much, but it was surprisingly good. The two actresses who carried the movie were great. Midori Francis and Jolene Purdy, who I hope to see more of in the future are very talented.

It was the theme from Cell taken to the next level with a creative twist of one woman (Sam) having to be the eyes for another woman (Emily) escaping from her homicidal ex-boyfriend. In the process the women become empowered, both refusing to be victims and help each other reclaim their lives. Missi Pyle, who is always great, tops it off with some comic relief as the stereotypical rich white lady from hell. You should check it out.

A Surprising Delight
arfdawg-12 April 2023
There are tons of movies lately being made / written / starring so called minorities and / or women. I guess it's a backer push for equity. Most of these films are pretty bad, so I went into streaming this with that in mind.

What a surpise. It's actually pretty decent. Yes, there are plently of holes in the plot and a few poorly rendered characters, and some under par acting here and there, but I have to say: it's nonetheless well made.

The director keeps the tension tight throughout -- even when a particular scene might be really silly, or unbelieveable.

I also liked how the two main female characters grow from each other by the end of the film.

Overall, I say it's worth a watch.

Two mismatched movies rolled into one
lousha-130 March 2023
This could've been a really decent movie if they stuck to one genre. It felt like they tried to make two completely different films and then somehow forcefully fit them together.

The main idea was not incredibly original, but it worked quite well. A seriously visually impaired woman is stuck in a dangerous situation and is trying to get help from a stranger through a video call. That part was mostly well done, with some forgivable flaws. (Characters making silly decisions just because with a logical step the movie would end after 20 minutes, or the fact that they tried to show the main protagonist's bad vision through an eye shaped "cutout" while nobody's vision is like that.) It had tension, it was engaging, it captured one's attention.

The connection between the two main female characters was also good, their shared journey was nicely done.

What sort of ruined it all more and more as the movie went on was the addition of the minor characters at Sam's work. At first they were just rather overdone and one dimensional. But later on they progressed into truly over the top burlesque, with zero connection to reality. And that's where the movie split into two. That sort of absurd comedy can work, but not paired with a fairly realistic thriller/drama. I get that they wanted to add obstacles, excitement on Sam's side as well, but it was really poorly done.

It's still a watchable movie, but it could've been a whole lot better with a revised script that kept the two sides more in balance.

Wow...
paul_haakonsen30 April 2023
When I opted to sit down and watch the 2023 thriller "Unseen", I had actually never heard about the movie. But the movie's synopsis sounded interesting enough, and the cover definitely was an eye-catcher. So yeah, of course I opted to sit down and watch what director Yoko Okumura had to offer.

And color me impressed. I wasn't really expecting such an entertaining movie. The storyline in "Unseen", as written by Salvatore Cardoni and Brian Rawlins, was such a refreshing approach to the stalked-in-the-woods type of movie. I really enjoyed the whole aspect of Emily (played by Midori Francis) having poor eyesight and having to rely on the eyes of Sam (played by Jolene Purdy) through video call on a battered mobile phone. It was quite a nice way of adding a very modern element, and a very well-functioning element I might add, to the movie.

I wasn't familiar with leading actresses Midori Francis and Jolene Purdy, but they really carried the movie quite well with their performances. I definitely was impressed with what I saw on the screen. The movie also has a nice appearance by Missi Pyle, whom was the only familiar face on the cast list for me.

Visually then director Yoko Okumura makes good use of distorted and blurred lenses to illustrate Emily's vision as she stumbled through the forest, depending on the eyes of Sam on the other end of the video call. "Unseen" is not a movie that uses an abundance of special effects, nor does it need to do so, as "Unseen" is a well-functioning psychological thriller. And it sort of gets under your skin and makes you feel like you're right there in the forest alongside with Emily.

I was genuinely surprised with the entertainment level from "Unseen", and it is a movie that I warmly recommend you to sit down and watch. I was genuinely and wholeheartedly entertained from beginning to end of this movie from director Yoko Okumura.

My rating of "Unseen" lands on a well-deserved seven out of ten stars.

Ridiculous like a bad car wreck
turnersa-7292225 June 2023
Unseen is absolutely ridiculous. But like a bad car wreck, you cannot stop watching, well some of us anyway. My friend couldn't take it. No spoilers, but all of it was highly improbable, unrealistic, and silly. Good for entertainment while you are folding clothes, brushing the dog or doing anything where your full attention is not required.

It could become one of those cult classics. But I just would not watch it again. Once for me is enough.

The movie seemed long and drawn out and I lost interest at times. It is never a good sign when you cannot wait for a movie to end.

A lot of the usual tropes present, but you can see for yourself.

Would have been good with just one story-line
Dottsylove25 March 2023
Would have been good with just one story-line but this movie is made even better with the absolute Bat nuts crazy second story-line they decided to throw in there.

Made even better by the split second scene at the very end of the film (right before the credits) that made it the cherry on top of a very bizarre Action drama. No spoilers but look for the business card at the end and pay attention to what it says on it - both sides.

The characters in the first story-line are your average characters that you would expect in any ol' movie and it's done well. A little over the top for the male lead but good. Now the second set of characters are a hoot I tells ya. An absolute over the top performance by everyone involved and it's weirdly wonderful..

If you want a movie that's your normal affair then probably not for you but if you like the weird than this will please.

Was going to give it a 7 but that end scene bumped it up to a 7.5 - 7.8.

So bad
alatlantic4 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I don't know where to even start with this one. The premise, a person in trouble calling a stranger, has been done at least 3 or 4 times before. This is the worst of that genre.

The lead is so unrealistically blind she'd need glasses the size of a telescope to see anything, yet is shown in thin, fashionable glasses. She has no less than 3 clear chances to kill her assailant, but each time doesn't...for no other reason than keeping the movie going. I remember thinking that the movie should have been over at about the 12 minute mark, the first time she stupidly leaves him living, walking around blind.

The gas station scenes were odd and over the top. Nobody is coming in with an assault rifle to get a stolen phone. Speaking of which, they way the blind girl yells at her helper because her phone is dying seems so completely out of place. Also, just unplug the stupid smoothie machine already.

I'll give it 2 stars because the two leads are decent actresses, but boy were they dealt an awful movie to showcase it in.

There's a lot of bad horror movies
Pukeonthestreet31 August 2023
This isn't one of them. Honestly all the bad to subpar reviews are people that don't appreciate an original and well done movie with likeable characters. Sometimes blumhouse produces bad stuff. This is one of the best blumhouse things I've seen. I really hope it gets a physical release as it's something i would definitely watch again. Horror is something that easily gets cheesy but everyone in this did a great job acting. It might seem like a crazy concept but it was so well done i look forward to more from this cast and crew. Definitely a highlight this year. Hope it's not overlooked it doesn't deserve to be.

Manages to build tension
ryanlion-3851428 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I thought this was a good effort and resulted a little better than most recent films. Although that might not be saying much. The points of this film and what they are trying to reach only work, if all the contrivances come together routinely. Of course they do, so this makes the film in parts not feel natural or real. For instance, how she is a ER Dr. So young and of course explains this away. It manages to build some tension in some parts is the best I can say about it. The guy of course comes back to life like Michael Meyers one more time. These kind of things bring the film down for me. They also take away some tension and believability. The end was just silly. The acting felt too forced. I don't know what to think. Worth a look if you are bored.

Could have been a better movie
Christopher37018 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The plot is interesting and the two lead actresses were good. What I didn't care for was how it didn't know if it wanted to be a horror, suspense or slapstick comedy.

Some of the characters were so over the top absurd that it took away from the suspenseful drama. Also, the split screens where it was unnecessary to have them only distracted me.

And the guy Emily was running from didn't seem to really want to kill her because he was genuinely upset when she fell off the cliff and thought she was killed.

Yet later on in the barn he wants to kill her again---so why was he so upset when he thought she died earlier? It made no sense.

Then there's the really overdone and tired "white people are monsters" and ethnic people are always their victims. Movies really need to drop that nonsense already and let it go. It only shows the film writers racism and hate and serves to remind me why I rarely watch modern films anymore.

I saw this free on Prime when I had nothing else to watch....but next time I get the urge to tune into a 21st century movie, i'll pop in a 20th century classic instead. 2 stars for this mish mash of a film and those stars go to the lead actresses who I thought gave good performances, but the movie as a whole is bad.

Watchable, but not easily!
renevasquez3422 August 2023
This entire movie is an advertisement for contacts and to stay in school. 🤣🤣. Also, make better choices. 🤣. If you are so blind you can't see directly in front of your face then there are adult measures to be taken way before this scenario becomes a thing. Movies like this attempt to entertain us with the motion that terrible things continue to happen to people that just can't catch a break. Unfortunately, this movie proves bad things happen to people that continuously make bad choices. Then, all of a sudden, these same people become the most unlikely heroes. I call bs. I live in reality, and this was just barely entertaining, but 100% a Gen Z thought up plot. Not quirky. Not witty. Just obvious.

Worth a go
macca20102913 April 2023
I went into this with low expectations, and it started out a little silly. However the second half showed some improvement and some decent acting performances. If you're like me and just whack a film on when there's nothing else to watch, this will do.

It's a good premise, and would probably be better if the weird garage guest had made any sense. However I'm writing this review whilst watching so in the end it may do, but at the moment I'm confused as to way. But one hour and four mins in and I'm still intrigued.

The lead performance was good, the second lead was good. The rest of the cast spoilt the film really. But still watchable.

One of the worst horror movies of 2023
karndaniel2 October 2023
This is a bad movie. The genre is not Horror. It has no suspense. Maybe a comedy, at best.

The acting is bad. The conversations taking place are awful. Every situation that occurs is completely ridiculous. It's just a very bad movie. The only reason I gave it a 2 is because I feel like there are movies that are worse, even though I have a hard time thinking of any. I watch horror movies, a lot. Usually ratings are bad, and there are A LOT of bad horror movies. This one though...wins the price, of the worst horror movie I have watched in 2023.

If you are a person who actually wanna get scared and watch a horror movie. Don't watch this movie. If you are a person who does not care at all what you put on, I still can't recommend it.

A pretty good offering from Blumhouse
lojitsu16 April 2023
Here's The 4K Lowedown on "Unseen" (NR - 2023 - Digital) Genre: Thriller/Crime

My Score: 6.5 Cast=3 Acting=7 Plot=7 Ending=8 Story=6 Intense=8 Pace=6 Suspense=7 Crime=8 Twist=5

A convenience store worker receives a random call from a nearly blind woman who is running from her murderous ex in the woods. To survive, the caller must rely on someone she never met to be her eyes.

"Could you video call me and guide me to somewhere safe?" This was pretty good. On the one hand, you have a great story centering on the caller and what she's dealing with. On the other side is a story in the convenience store that I didn't want. I love Missi Pyle, but she does not work here, They could have left it with the convenience store clerk dealing with her own demons and that would have been enough. It's worth a watch, but there are some groaner moments.

Uneventful and unoriginal
burgerman934 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The movie does accomplish one thing- we see how Emily fears for her life as she is held captive by an obsessive and domineering ex boyfriend. I could sort of get behind the premise of the movie. That is until Missi Pyle's character stormed the gas station to wreak havoc. I was so confused as to why Sam's character got arrested at the end. She had to defend herself against two armed goons.

In reality, the gas station clerk can simply call the police to help facilitate search and rescue. That's what I would do if a stranger was in a predicament.

This is low on the totem pole for Blumhouse productions. I can't really fault the actors here- it's more so that the script was lackluster and the plot devices were absent.

Tense and quirky.
jmbovan-47-16017319 November 2023
Unseen uses the storyline of a person with poor or no vision and the use of video calling to help the person "see" in their situation. Like See For Me, Unseen has two strangers bond while one is in jeopardy, and in this situation, the "see-er" comes under some danger herself. There is some black humor from Missi Pyle's character, and this does bring a different element to the film. I believe her plot line is to show the absurd version of entitlement that the stalking abusive ex-boyfriend displays in his twisted logic to kidnap, berate, and threaten the poor vision character.

Overall, the film was easy to watch as the main two actors do well in their characterizations and the interaction does come to feel genuine without being overly trite. And their developing relationship is what holds this film together.

Unique idea with a Ted Bundy lookalike
sednamorrigan24 August 2023
The gauche lime green aura of the GATORS GALORE quick stop caught my attention, and then the Tiger King wardrobed station owner, with his malignant narcissistic treatment of Sam, a Floridian female with little hope of advancement in this particular retail position, clenched it. JUST when I thought that there could be no more perks, the psychotic ex-boyfriend shows up ... and he looks like a young Ted Bundy.

Both female leads portray their characters wonderfully, but Emily's status as a doctor really conflicts with her insidious ditziness. The third female (narcissistic blond customer) completes a trifecta of malignant narcissists with her entitlement, gold handgun, 24k phone case, and 24k b@#$& attitude.

The ditziness of the characters is really the only thing that holds me back from rating it 10 stars. Unfortunately, it gets in the way on 2 occasions. I leave it to you to discover them. Otherwise, I was truly entertained by UNSEEN.

Okay, but not special
JohnM6331 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This South African crime drama is pretty okay if you're not to critical. Already the basic premise (a cleaning woman that starts killing) has some credibility issues, but one should be able to live with that. Acting and dialogues are fine, as is the storyline. I'm not opposed to slow developing stories, but this series definitely could have been told in four instead of six episodes, had it picked up a little more pace from the start. Too much wasted time without adding anything substantial. Other that that, the last episode has numerous crediblity issues. Unseen is quite entertaining up to a point but will for sure not stick.

Is dumb but not in the good way
bnc-3634021 September 2023
While the idea is cool, the execution is poor and aggravating to sit through. The characters are dumb, the plot is dumb, and it's reeeeeeeally slow until the last 20 minutes. It feels like a short someone thought would be a great movie but they didn't change it enough to fit the format.

Who knew you could be gaslit by a stranger over FaceTime? The protagonist takes on the situation with her entire soul despite the fact that this is an absolute stranger who she owes nothing. If most people found themselves in this situation, they would have rolled their eyes and hung up. This is one of those movies that would benefit from a remake.

The "omg watch this" have to be about the relationship
tknmzombie21 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I am assuming the visual impairment is a sort of CVI, where the character sees everything in a sort of blurry landscape without her prescription lenses. Kind of the Thelma from Scooby Doo situation.

But, even in today's world, the eye wear she would need for such an impairment, would be pretty dang thick. And today's eye glass lenses are made of polycarbonate plastics, that take some serious abuse even to chip, much less break (but scratches show up for sure). So, suspending belief in the whole paper thin eye glass lenses is required for the WHOLE film.

As such, we must accept her extreme version of legal blindness, that happens to be immediately corrected by the thinnest veil of lens...to be saved by a stranger via phone in the middle of nowhere where we know phones barely carry a bar of service.

Once you get past this, you can enjoy the fun of these two women getting to know each other through the fear of the moment. Our gas station lady having ethics not to kill the man that for sure plans to kill our blind girl in danger. This assures our film a longer run time. Because, if she had just defended herself and double tapped ... It would have been over in 30 minutes.

Lesson learned. Just double tap. And then let the gal on the other end of the phone call for help. Maybe make friends while you wait for help?

Riveting!
elbrant2 June 2023
I thought this was going to be lame... just something to make noise in the background while I focused on other things. Instead, everything else got pushed aside and all of my attention was on the story as it unfolded.

The direction and editing proved skilled. Together they gradually lead the viewer into a triple threaded story line that intensifies as new characters are introduced. What starts as 'yeah, okay', eyebrow raising introduction develops into a heart pounding chaotic collision, followed by learning the lead character(s) fated conclusions.

This was, truly, an unexpected thrill ride.

Flawed
jank-0749027 August 2023
This is definitely a films with flaws so if you're looking for a razor sharp plot or an in-depth character study look elsewhere. The theme for the plot was great, just that choices the characters made seemed strange and not quite appropriate for the situation or moment they were in - But it was very entertaining with a bit of thrill without horror or gore. I found that the two main female characters kept me hooked and in my seat for the entire film. The secondary characters were almost over the top how they behaved but I think that was for some comic relief. And the conclusion for both the main characters was both empowering and satisfying,
