Even if you’re not a fan of manga anime, it’s well worth it to watch. Based on the original space opera anime Space Pirate Captain Harlock, Leiji Matsumoto’s manga character is being brought to CGI life in a new theatrical flick from Toei Animation.
Directed by Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed) from a script by Mobile Suit Gundam Uc author Harutoshi Fukui, the story follows Captain Harlock as he fights for humanity with his 40 crew members aboard the invincible space battleship Arcadia.
The 1978 Matsumoto’s manga initiated a TV anime series, a few features, and the 1982 sequel called ‘Arcadia of My Youth: Endless Orbit Ssx.’
Despite the fact that this new Captain Harlock CG feature is technically an adaptation, the film still follows the same story and the look of the character is even similar, though decidedly darker than the original 1978 Space Pirate Captain Harlock.

With director Alexandre Aja’s next project Cobra: The Space Pirate coming to theaters in 2013, fan Michael Paris has gone ahead to create a fan film teaser that’s inspired by the upcoming live-action adaptation of the popular cartoon, the old-school manga by Buichi Terasawa, which stars Johanna Genet. Alexandre Aja’s big-budget, live-action version of “Cobra: The Space Pirate” won’t be landing for a while yet (if, that is, it actually makes it), but until then, check out a quickie fan-made teaser trailer from filmmaker Michael Paris. You don’t see much of Cobra himself, but I guess that’s the point. So what’s this Cobra guy all about? Set in the far future, the series tells of a man called Cobra, who lived an adventurous life until his enemies began to hunt him down. Cobra surgically altered his face and erased his own memory in order to hide from his foes and lead a normal life. He soon regains his memories and re-unites with his old partner Lady Armaroid and his ship Tortuga. Cobra travels the galaxy, fighting the outlaw Pirate Guild, but also fleeing the law-enforcing Milky Way Patrol. Along with his charm and wit,...

Heads up horror fans, we've got the scoop on new projects for a couple members of the so-called "Splat Pack" this week. (Wait, is the Splat Pack still a thing? Probably not.) Anyway, it looks like Alexandre Aja will finally be taking some time away from the many remakes he is involved with in order to do something original again. According to Heat Vision, he has signed on to direct an adaptation of Joe Hill's 2010 novel Horns. Who is Joe Hill? None other than Stephen King's son, who took on a pen name in order to dissociate himself from his father and to let his work be judged on its own merits. The story revolves around a 26-year-old man who wakes up with a hangover and finds horns growing out of his head. He slowly starts to suspect that he may be connected in some way to the unsolved murder of his own girlfriend.

Alexandre Aja, who was once circling a remake of Stephen King’s Pet Semetary, has now found himself attached to direct a Mandalay Pictures adaptation of a book written by King’s son, Joe Hill.
The novel is Horns, and it follows a 26 year old guy wonderfully named Ig Perrish who awakens from a black-out hangover to find that he has thorns coming out of his head, Hellboy style. They are growing too, as Ig sets out to discover who murdered his girlfriend and whether that has a relation to the horns that are coming out of his head which make people confess their darkest secrets. I haven’t read the novel but the reviews say it is one that conjures up amazing images and Aja has a track record in this department so he seems like a good choice.
Aja is a french filmmaker who has devoted his career to horror.

“Piranha” director Alexandre Aja is getting a little horny. The director has signed on to direct “Horns” for Mandalay Pictures. Based on a novel by Joe Hill (son of Stephen King, Fyi), “Horns” follows a man who “wakes up with a massive hangover and discovers horns sprouting from his head. He becomes convinced that their existence is tied to the unsolved murder of his girlfriend.” Aja, coming off the guilty pleasure killer fish movie “Piranha”, will direct the film from a script by Scott Bunin, with production set for late spring or early summer 2012. The French Aja, who really bust loose with the slasher film “High Tension” way back in 2003, also has the sci-fi action-adventure “Cobra: The Space Pirate” in the wings. He won’t be climbing onboard the big-screen adaptation of the animated property until he finishes up with “Horns”, though...

Paramount has been in talks for a Pet Sematary remake dating back to February and now things may be moving forward if they can lure their desired director on board. The studio reportedly wants Alexandre Aja for the job - a man who's no stranger to horror remakes. With films like The Hills Have Eyes and Piranha 3D under his belt, Aja "turns up on a lot of wishlists" for this type of property, but now he's moved beyond that stage as Paramount actively tries to hire him. The material seems like a good fit for Aja and he could probably take it on while he continues to locate funding for Cobra: The Space Pirate. The film will be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Steven Schneider, and written by Matt Greenberg (1408). This news comes just a week after we heard that Aja would be producing a Scanners TV series for Dimension Films,...

Nothing has been said about the 'Pet Sematary' remake for about six months. The last bit of news that came out was that screenwriter, Matt Greenberg -- known for such films as 'Halloween H20: 20 Years Later,' 'Reign of Fire,' and '1408' -- was ready to hand in his script for the film to Paramount, and that the studio was seeking a "high-level" director. Twitch has learned that the director that Paramount has in their sights is none other than the director of two other remakes, 'The Hills Have Eyes' and 'Piranha 3D,' Alexandre Aja. The director has one project in the works, an adaptation of the sci-fi manga and anime, 'Cobra: The Space Pirate,' but it's not expected to go in front of cameras until sometime in 2013.1989 saw the release of 'Pet Sematary.' We reported on news last August that Piranha 3D helmer Alexandre Aja had acquired the rights to a sci-fi manga series Cobra: The Space Pirate, with the intention of making it his next directorial venture.
Now, a very fine piece of promo art (which has a touch of Boris Vallejo about it) has popped up online for the film. From a script by Aja and regular co-scribe Gregory Levasseur, Cobra is the tale of a notorious rogue pirate whose refusal to align with the United Galaxies Federation or the Pirates Guild means a huge bounty is slapped on his head.
Casting has yet to be announced, but the gentlemen posing on this poster, bears more than a passing resemblance to a bleached-blond Vincent Gallo.
Now that’s a film I would rush out to see!

Back in August of last year, we brought you the news about director Alexandre Aja (Piranha 3D) and his plans to adapt the Japanese manga-turned animated series, Cobra: The Space Pirate into a tent pole-sized live action franchise for the big screen. Aja was granted the rights by creator, Buichi Terasawa (Goku Midnight Eye).
At the time, Aja said of the project:
“I grew up dreaming about Cobra: The Space Pirate. My day was, finish school, run home and switch on the TV and I was hardly the only one. Kids did it in France, Italy, Spain, all over Western Europe. For many people there is Star Wars and nothing else, but for me and my writing partner, there is Star Wars and Cobra. I am so surprised it never crossed the ocean and made the same impact in the U.S., because it is so big everywhere else. There are 60 books,...

Paris-based Onyx Films has signed on to co-produce the $100 million+ budget manga adaptation "Cobra: The Space Pirate" which Alexandre Aja ("Piranha 3D") is helming for Studio 37 reports Variety.
Described as a tent pole-sized live action sci-fi franchise, the story is set in a future where merchant spaceships and ruthless brigands sail across space. Cobra is a notorious rogue pirate with a large bounty on his head who teams up with a hunter and seeks a lost treasure hidden on Mars.
Buichi Terasawa's manga and animated series was hugely popular across Europe which is how Aja knows the property. Aja and Gregory Levasseur penned the script and both will produce alongside Aton Soumache and Dimitri Rassam.
Pre-production will kick off in the Fall, with production to start early Spring 2012 for a Summer 2013 release.

It’s good to see that “The Hills Have Eyes” and “Piranha 3D” director Alexandre Aja is tackling a property that isn’t a gore-soaked remake of a marginal late-70′s horror production. Although I know next to nothing about the manga on which it’s based — a statement I find myself writing at least every other week — the promotional artwork for Aja’s upcoming action flick “Cobra: The Space Pirate” looks exceptionally badass. Maybe it’s because I have a weakness for films that incorporate the words “cobra” and “space pirate” into their titles. The imagery the name conjures is absolutely wondrous. It’s no “Ice Pirates”, mind you, but it’s pretty darn close. Here’s what the film is about, courtesy of Coming Soon: The film follows the eponymous rogue space pirate, a man who has surgically altered his face and erases his own memory to hide from his enemies.

Though Alexandre Aja unfortunately gave us the horrendous mess that is Mirrors, thankfully that was the only major bump in an otherwise great career. High Tension gave us a gory slash and stalk that gave real meaning to its title. The Hills Have Eyes is quite possibly the best remake of a classic that many believe improved on the original. Then there is Piranha 3D. Which I think most horror fans unanimously praised last year. Now the french director is about to give us a modern day Flash Gordon, Han Solo, and Snake Plissken character all rolled into one. Get you first look at the poster for Cobra: The Space Pirate after the break.

I always love seeing this stuff, because it's really just early sales art to create some buzz. ComingSoon has posted a photo of a cover containing some promo art for Cobra: The Space Pirate, the new film from director Alexandre Aja (High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes, Mirrors, Piranha 3D). It's an adaptation of a Japanese manga about a rogue space pirate who teams up with a bounty hunter on an adventure to Mars in search of lost treasure. The pirate, who isn't even cast yet (as far as we know), has "surgically altered his face and erased his memory to hide from enemies," but regains those memories to find the treasure. Sounds fun. Update: We've added the nice, clean, high res version of the poster below, as it was debuted on Premiere.fr.
