This article contains spoilers for Battlestar Galactica.
Think back to the early 2000s. Star Trek‘s vision of an optimistic future no longer kept pace with the post-9/11 world. Instead, Trek writer Ronald D. Moore left the franchise to work with David Eick on reviving a cheesy sci-fi show from the 1970s best remembered for its weird cyborg dog and cool-looking evil robots.
And yet, somehow, Moore and Eick made Battlestar Galactica into a hit, an ambitious mix of deep lore, compelling character building, and religious yearning. Not even the controversial final season, which took leaps that rivaled the ending of Lost, could diminish the series popularity.
So why in the world did the Battlestar Galactica spinoffs flop so hard? For Eick, the answer is simple: Poor planning and lack of vision.
“Ron’s involvement vacillated so there was less consistency and less reliability and, as we shored up his absence,...

For the 15th anniversary of the "Battlestar Galactica" finale, I spoke with several of the show's writers and actors for an inside look at how it reached that conclusion. One of them was David Eick, the series' co-creator (with Ronald D. Moore). I asked the man who resurrected "Galactica" out of its campy 1970s roots why attempts to keep the franchise going faltered.
You see, "Battlestar" hadn't even been finished a year when a prequel spin-off debuted: "Caprica," an ensemble drama set more than 50 years before the series on the eponymous planet (one of the 12 colonies razed by the robotic Cylons at the outset of "Battlestar Galactica"). The series debuted in January 2010 and wrapped that November after a single, 19-episode first season -- its planned multi-year run aborted by low ratings.
Next, Eick and co. pivoted with "Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome," a second prequel (but after "Caprica") set during the first human/Cylon war.

Battlestar Galactica has a compelling premise. Twelve human space colonies in a distant part of the universe are at war with a race of artificially intelligent robots called the Cylons. A human called Baltar betrays humanity and the Cylons wipe out the Twelve Colonies and most of their space-faring ships, the Colonial Fleet, in a nuclear attack that leaves their planets uninhabitable. The only surviving vessel from the Fleet is the Battlestar Galactica, along with a ragtag collection of other space vessels. So the human survivors travel across the universe led by Commander Adama of the Galactica, looking for the legendary 13th colony, Earth, to make it their new home.
With such a fascinating setup, it’s no surprise that Battlestar Galactica (1978) has had several sequels, spinoffs, and remakes: the short-lived sequel series Galactica 1980, which was hampered by a lack of most of the original stars; the very successful 2003-...

The line, "So say we all" is a classic part of the reimagined "Battlestar Galactica" series. The show, which was based on the 1978 television series, aired on Syfy (then the Sci-Fi Channel) beginning with the two-part miniseries in 2003, followed by four seasons starting in 2004. It spawned the under-appreciated prequel series "Caprica" in 2010, and a spinoff called "Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome" which was first released as a web series in 2012, then as a television movie on the channel in 2013.

It's finally arrived fans of the series! The new chapter in the Battlestar saga - Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome, a prequel to the reimagined Battlestar Galactica series, which co-stars Canadian actors Karen Leblanc (Nurse.Fighter.Boy, Defying Gravity, High Chicago) and Adrian Holmes (Frankie & Alice, Red Riding Hood) as Jenna and Lt. Decklan Elias, respectively. As Emmanuel noted about a year ago, the SyFy network eventually settled on releasing Blood and Chrome as a web series, in ten 12-minute acts, instead of as a TV show. However, it's since been revealed that the series will...

Earlier this week, Machinima announced that the long-awaited Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome prequel series had finally found a home on Machinima Prime. The first two episodes of the series have premiered on the YouTube Original Channel, and as with previous SyFy Digital productions, they are of extremely high quality. A Machinima rep explained the process by which the gaming network gained distribution rights for Blood and Chrome. "The series came up after a marketing discussion with Syfy about their current series and a simultaneous discussion with Ucp about how to partner together on big opportunities. Battlestar came up as a perfect opportunity." The series is being released two episodes at a time; therefore, the entirety of Blood and Chrome will be released over the course of five weeks, the same length of time over which Machinima released Halo: Forward Unto Dawn. The first episode features a young William Adama,...

This highly anticipated chapter in the Battlestar Galactica saga takes place in the midst of the first Cylon war. As the battle between humans and their creation, the sentient robotic Cylons, rages across the 12 colonial worlds, gifted fighter pilot, William Adama (Luke Pasqualino, The Borgias), finds himself assigned to one of the most powerful battlestars in the Colonial fleet: the Galactica. Full of ambition and hungry for action, Adama quickly finds himself at odds with his co-pilot, the battle-weary officer Coker (Ben Cotton, Alcatraz). With only 47 days left in his tour of duty, Coker desires an end to battle as much as Adama craves its onset. Lili Bordán (Silent Witness) also stars. Battlestar Galactica: Blood And Chrome will continue its run of 10 7-12 minute episodes on Machinima Prime, and then in 2013 the prequel will air as a two hour movie on Syfy before hitting DVD & Blu-ray.

Battlestar Galactica fans are ready for a serious spin-off. Let’s face it, Caprica was mostly made of high-concept fail. Battlestar proved there is still a market for a high drama space opera. Battlestar Galactica fans have only four days to wait until Universal Cable Productions’ long-awaited Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome series premieres on Machinima. Taking place in the 10th year of the first Cylon war, the upcoming series follows a young William Adama as he begins his first assignment aboard the Galactica.
Originally developed as a series for the Syfy channel, the network eventually wound up passing on the project earlier this year after keeping it in limbo since the conclusion of their long-running Battlestar Galactica series.
Since that time, producers have now struck a deal that will allow fans to get their Battlestar Galactica fix through Machinima, who will release the pilot episode through 7 12-minute installments that will begin posting on Friday this week. The remaining episodes will be released over the next four weeks before the full two-hour version of the pilot episode is scheduled to air on Syfy early next year.

The long-gestating pilot-turned-tv movie-turned-web series "Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome" will see the light of day starting this week.
The show will premiere on YouTube's Machinima Prime channel on Friday (Nov. 9). What had initially been conceived as a two-hour pilot/TV movie for Syfy will now run as a series of 10 webisodes, which will roll out over the course of four weeks.
"Blood and Chrome" fills in some of the time between "BSG" prequel "Caprica" and Syfy's original series. It follows a young William Adama (Luke Pasqualino), a fighter pilot assigned to Galactica during the first Cylon War. Ben Cotton ("Harper's Island") also stars.
Syfy still plans to air "Blood and Chrome" as a two-hour movie early next year, but whether that will lead to any ongoing series is up in the air. (EW first reported the news of the debut date.)

His presentation discussed the science in sci-fi, and included a reading, of sorts, of an excerpt from his book The Science of Battlestar Galactica.
He finished with a jaw-dropping flourish, however, when he screened for the audience this trailer from the hopefully-upcoming Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome:

As part of SyFy’s largest original programming in the network’s eighteen-year history, SyFy will premiere four scripted dramas this coming July beginning with brand new show, Alphas, leading the pack. July is packed with the return of summer scripted dramas Warehouse 13, Eureka, and Haven.
Check out the official description for Alphas and take a whiff at what SyFy is cooking in terms of scripted dramas and reality TV in development. With Stargate Universe and Caprica off the table, the network is sure keen on developing programming that expands the scope of what we’re used to at SyFy. Looking at ratings for the first quarter of 2011, the network has experienced a 17% increase in adults 18-34 and 13% in total viewers with the launch of new shows, Being Human and Face-Off.

The two-hour pilot for Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome (2011) has begun filming. As a fan of Battlestar: Galactica (both the original and the reboot), Battlestar: Galactica: Razor, and aspects of Caprica, I am looking forward to what the scifi show’s creators come up with. I am also looking forward to the early experiments on human beings by Cyclons and the space battles that occur with “a young William Adama during the 10th year of the first Cylon war.” We already reported how Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome cast Luke Pasqualino, Ben Cotton in the key roles in the upcoming series.
Here is the official press release.
New York – February 10, 2011 – Production has begun in Vancouver on Syfy’s highly anticipated 2-hour pilot, Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome, the all-new chapter in the Battlestar Galactica saga. Universal Cable Productions will produce the event with Syfy utilizing cutting edge CGI and virtual technology.

Moviehole have managed to get a look at the script for the pilot ep of Battlestar Galactica: Blood And Chrome and what follows it their breakdown. Of course as is always the case with these sort of things, don't read if you want to be surprised!.. “Blood and Chrome” is set in the 10th year of the second Cylon War, which – unfortunately for our gung-ho hero – looks like it’s about to come an end. Not only am I lucky enough to know some of the folks working on the series but I’ve been fortunate enough to have read the pilot script. And let me say right off the bat, if you like Ron Moore’s “Galactica” reboot, and to an extent J.J Abrams’ “Star Trek”, you’re gonna love “Battlestar Galactica : Blood & Chrome”. It’s Frakkin’ Excellent. Obviously inspired by Orci and Kurtzman’s “Trek” reboot script (and to some extent,...

SyFy announced today that Luke Pasqualino, late of the third and fourth seasons of Skins, has been signed to play young Commander William Adama in the upcoming Battlestar Galactica: Blood And Chrome series.
EW reports:
Pasqualino will star as the young, talented fighter pilot William Adama, a recent Academy graduate who finds himself assigned to the newest Battlestar in the Colonial fleet: the Galactica. Full of ambition and in pursuit of the intense action that the Cylon war promises, Adama quickly finds himself at odds with Coker (Cotton), the battle-weary officer to whom he reports. With 45 days left in his tour of duty, Coker desires an end to battle just as much as Adama craves the start of it. Though they clash at first, the two men forge an unlikely bond when a routine mission turns dangerous and becomes a pivotal one for the desperate fleet.

U.S. Catholics are to get guidance from Rome in advance of election day, according to U.S. Cardinal-designate Raymond Burke. The guidance will be to vote against candidates based on their pro-choice, pro-stem cell research, pro-euthanasia, and pro-gay marriage. Catholics will be told they must do “their civic duty in accord with their Catholic faith.” That includes:
So, the Catholic Church in teaching that sexual acts between persons of the same sex are intrinsically evil, are against nature itself, is simply announcing the truth, helping people to discriminate right from wrong in terms of their own activities.
Gay down! We’ve lost Sam Adama (Sasha Roiz), because SyFy has pulled the plug on Caprica, just days after greenlighting Battlestar: Blood and Chrome. I’m not surprised, but they owe us two gays, minimum, on the new series. Plus, they’re pulling it from the schedule, and we don’t...

The prequel to "Battlestar Galactica" has canceled by Syfy. 'Caprica", starring Polly Walker, Eric Stoltz and Esai Morales, will be replaced by a new spinoff pilot, titled "Blood & Chrome." According to Variety, "Caprica" will run the remaining five unaired episodes in the first quarter of 2011. "Unfortunately, despite its obvious quality, Caprica has not been able to build the audience necessary to justify a second season," said Mark Stern, programming head at Syfy. "Caprica" was a moody Earth-bound drama that was loved by critics, but failed to light up audiences.

With sinking ratings and a plot that has... drifted, Caprica, one of two Sf shows with a gay character in the cast, and the only current series with a gay male character in the cast, was cancelled, according to SyFy Evp Mark Stern.
"Unfortunately, despite its obvious quality, 'Caprica' has not been able to build the audience necessary to justify a second season," Stern said.
SyFy announced that a new back-door pilot / movie Battlestar Galactica: Blood And Chrome will be premiering later this year. Set during the First Cylon War, the series will follow a young Lt. Adama and his battles against the toasters.
I can't say I'm sad to see Caprica go. Since it came back from its imposed break, its been a meandering mess. While individual storylines have been fascinating, and this past episodes line: "Task Completed. By Your Command" rocked the house -- it...

A lot of fans of Battlestar Galactica (Ron Moore's remake, not the original, just to be clear) are getting stoked about Syfy's second spin-off series, Battlestar Galactic: Blood & Chrome, which the network recently announced.
One of the things that has fans excited is the opportunity to see the original conflict with the Cylons, and the possibility of VFX that will showcase the vehicles and ships characterized by the 1978 series—chiefly the original Cylon Basestars, Raiders and Centurions (which were glimpsed in "Razor").
Now, in a new interview with the La Times' Hero Complex blog, producer David Eick reveals a new character and several of his ideas for the fledgling series, which takes place when William Adam is in his 20s and fresh out of cadet school (the series is set against the backdrop of the First Cylon War—40 years before the events of Battlestar Galactica). There'll be no rag-tag...
