Comrade Martha is the meanest Commie you'll ever meet
mrb198031 December 2020
Herbert Philbrick (Richard Carlson) is visiting communists in Germany when he encounters ruthless Comrade Martha (Emmaline Henry), who carries a Luger and shoots any party member who doesn't do his job. She sends Philbrick packing back to the U. S. after giving him a bullet shell as a reminder of what happens if you cross her. Back in the States Philbrick becomes enmeshed in another Commie plot with a visiting Martha, this one regarding a courier and a mysterious briefcase. After Comrade Martha accuses him of tipping off the FBI (the courier was arrested), he turns the tables and accuses her! Martha is sent packing back to Germany and Philbrick breathes a sigh of relief, ready to counter any new communist plans.

Emmaline Henry plays Comrade Martha with great evil energy. I can't remember a meaner character in any other television series. The script is pretty standard and I always wonder how Philbrick talks his way out of situations when he's suspected of being a capitalist spy, but he always does. This episode is worth catching, if only for Henry's flamboyant portrayal of the meanest Commie ever.

Henry had a fairly successful career from the 1950s through the 1970s but sadly died at age 50 in 1979 from brain cancer. This episode was one of her earliest acting roles.
