The Man Who Saw Frankenstein Cry

Since the introduction of the Discovery Screen as part of the London Film4 Frightfest documentaries have made up a great part of the infamous horror festival. From I Think We’re Alone Now to Best Worst Movie, some of my all-time favourite documentaries have screened in the darkened depths of what Frightfest fans have dubbed the “disco screen.” This years offering, The Man Who Saw Frankenstein Cry, tells the story of the legendary Jacinto Molina, aka Paul Naschy, one of Europe’s most beloved horror icons who, despite not becoming a mainstream name, is hailed as one of the true horror cinema greats, right up there with Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney, Bela Lugosi, Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee.

It's times like this when we here in the States couldn't be more jealous of our friends across the pond. One of the best damned horror film festivals in the world, The Film4 FrightFest, has announced its full slate of films, and all we can say is ... wow.

From Thursday 25 August to Monday 29 August, the UK’s premiere event for horror fans will be at the Empire Cinema in London’s Leicester Square to present 37 films on two screens. Empire 1 will house the main event while the Discovery strand will play in Empire 4. Everyone’s favourite U.K. genre film festival is back to present a total of 37 spine-tinglers in two screens. Fantaspoa 2011, billed as “the biggest fantastic film festival in Latin America”, is gearing up down in Brazil, with a whopping 150 films in its line-up, including 55 short films and 95 feature films. Director Rodrigo Aragao’s “The Night of the ChupaCabras” will open the festival, which will also feature the world premiere of Kapel Furman’s “Pólvora Negra (Black Gunpowder)”. And for you International horror fiends, Italian maestro of the horrific, Lamberto Bava will be honored with the festival’s Career Achievement Award. The Fest will run from July 2nd through July 17th, and you can get more details and ticketing info at the festival’s Official Site.
