Such a fun and charming show.
mtnvid18 November 2023
I see a lot of mediocre reviews for this show because it is not what was implied it would be in the promotion. A straight honest adaptation of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. I can understand the disappointment, but are you rating the show or the advertising campaign?

However it's quite apparent that they intended to subvert expectations, even with starting out the first episode or two exactly how you would expect a direct adapation to be. It makes sense to me that they wanted the audience to go in expecting a one to one adaption, to purposefully lead you on a chaotic path.

To say this is not for fans is a misunderstanding of the goal of this show. It nods its head to the story that came before, but gives space and a situation for supporting characters whom I had always found interesting and fun to elaborate on their role in the original story, as well as grow as characters themselves.

All the while staying true to the fun, rock and roll, nerdy video game, cartoonish off beat humor that made the original characters and overall work so charming.

This isn't Scott Pilgrim vs. The World **again**. This is **new Scott Pilgrim content.**, and to have that while staying true to the heart of the source material? How is that not for fans?

As a non fan I was pleasantly surprised
Orby228323 November 2023
I really enjoyed it as I went going in not expecting much, loved the sketchy pencil animation and art style, the fights were very creative and fun. I feel the only let down for me was that it wasnt really my thing, and that's a me thing, and it suffered from the same things some of the move did as well as things I never really gelled with in the source material, because I will admit I never really liked Scott Pilgrim franchise, but this is the best I got out of it and that's maybe due to how awesome the animation and songs and just the overall aesthetic was.

It was a well crafted show all round, great acting from a returning cast and it made me smile in places. I only watched it out of curiosity and while I wasnt fully entertained I am glad I did watch it. If you are a fan and want to see a new perspective you could do far worse, I say check it out.

Feels too good to be true
roaches_9719 November 2023
I was super excited for this show. Not only was a competent animation studio adapting one of my favorite comics and one of my favorite movies, but the cast of the movie was coming back to voice. I went in expecting an adaptation of the same story as the movie and the comic series, likely following closer to the comic than the movie did, but this show is something completely different and I loved it. I see other reviews on here that mostly criticize the fact that this isn't just the same story with a new paint job, and I think that's pretty stupid. Not only did Edgar Wright himself and other members of the crew say that this was something new in interviews, but this is really good. I think the only reason these people are mad is because they had a specific expectation and that expectation was not met. Anyway, the show is great. I'll avoid spoiling too much, but it's kind of like Final Fantasy 7 Remake, where it follows the original story to a certain point and then starts to do its own thing. The animation is great, the action scenes are cool, the voice acting is great, and an iconic duo from another Edgar Wright film have a few cameos. It's clear the amount of love and attention went in to this product. I highly recommend it if you're a fan of the series, and I would recommend that newcomers watch the live action movie and read the comic series before checking this out.

I Want More!

A great spin-off of a beloved franchise. Takes Off brings something new to the series by switching the narrative to Ramona's point of view. The animation is like reading the comics with hand-drawn effect, colorful scenery and effects. It has everything that people loved from the franchise with a lot of retro-gaming Easter eggs, absurd humor, hilarious characters, good pop-rock songs, and even the cast of the movie reprises their role as voice actor. I really like to give Ramona Flowers the first role, as not only she's fun to follow but also because it gives her a more to show than "this perfect alternative girl that makes people turns madly in love with", presenting her flaws even helps to give some humanity to her evil exes. Because of the absurd humor, there is a lot of "this happens, don't ask questions", people looking for a minimum of logic would see plot holes everywhere but if you are just there for the ride, it's a wild one.

Scott Pilgrim: Revelation
elonmusk-is_a_moron17 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I don't hate this show. It was okay I guess, with a nice animation.

But a part of me found it disappointing. Very disappointing.

It saddens me to say this because I largely prefer animation over live-action, but the 2010 movie was better than this.

In case if you are wondering, this is NOT an adaptation of the comics.

It is a completely new version, where Scott Pilgrim plays a secondary role, and Ramona is the main character instead.

Kinda what like Netflix did with He-Man in the Revelations series. (I don't hate that show either, but I lost all respect I had for Kevin Smith once I discovered he got into the nft scam too)

I think it would have been more honest to name this "Ramona Flowers vs. The World" or "Ramona Flowers takes off", but apparently pissing off viewers with false marketing is considered some sort of "genius" move by people who loves subverting expectations. (Note: Subverting expectations only works when the subversion is at the service of the plot. When is done for pure shock value, it comes as schlocky, kinda like a clickbait article)

The new plot is also more shallow. More..."sanitized" if you get me. (Despite the TV-MA rating) Female characters are not allowed to have flaws and make mistakes.

Some people would say: "Why you would want a 100% faithful adaptation if the comic and the movie already exist", and I say:

1) The movie was a somewhat faithful adaptation but made its share of changes in order to fit the whole plot into less than 2 hours.

2) When a person likes a book, comic, or videogame, it would be nice to see a faithful adaptation of said work. I mean, even when I prefer the Full Metal Alchemist series from 2003 to Brotherhood, I can see why the fans of the manga demanded a more faithful adaptation, and I am glad they got their wish.

And one more thing: Any writer or creator who genuinelly believes in equality and strong female characters does not need to dumb down, weaken or erase male characters in order to make the women look better. That is just condescending pandering. Good female characters shine and are memorable by themselves.

If the writer is ashamed of making a "Manic Pixie Girl" story, he could easily have created a whole series with strong female characters, rather than trying to bait viewers using a male character.

Surprise (sort of) sequel
mauricio-madrid18 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Went in expecting another adaptation, safe but comfortable. I was pleasantly surprised by Its approach.

To go back and considering a different way things could've gone can be a tricky line to walk, but the show pulls It off.

The show chooses to go for a path of healing in the way It confronts the issues of the characters, and Lets everyone grow instead of just being dispatched by our protagonists.

It Is a bit weird that Scott Is not as present in the story, but at the end It all comes down to him, sort of a "It's not Scott's story, but a story about Scott" angle.

While also bringing the perspective to a voice to the other side of the relationship, It's not that the comic didn't flesh out Ramona, It did, but always from Scott's point of View, now the show gave her a turn to tell It herself.

A very pleasing surprise a decade later
GryeD18 November 2023
I remember when I was a teenager, I watched this movie and was blown away by great margins. Some could even say Scott Pilgrim was ahead of its time. The series takes the radically awesome story a step further and explores new aspects.

I must admit it is damn straight impressive they got the original cast back even after all of these years. That fact alone is enough to earn my respect towards the Scott Pilgrim franchise and its creators.

The animation is vastly different from anything I have ever seen. It's tricky to describe it, but its a bizarrely epic style with brightness and motions like none other.

The story is unique from all expectations, but was explained properly in the Scott Pilgrim way. Like most people, we only have memory of the legendary movie, so this series takes it a step further.

Exploring sides of characters we have never seen before, and even for people like me who did not read the books. I didn't feel left out for a single moment throughout all of the episodes.

I have verified the story of this series is a spinoff compared to the source material. While this series is a great attempt, I do respect the fact this show was meant more to be a one time thing. As getting the original actors to come back to the series continously wasn't part of the agreement.

If this is the last of Scott Pilgrim we will see, I respect it. The series surpassed all expectations even if it was radically different. There was great potential to make this a continous series, and I guess that wasn't in the vision of the creators.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Another Approach
pdduhaj17 November 2023
WOW, just WOW. I had high expectations for this adaptation and every one of them were exceeded.

A note: this is not a straight adaptation. It is a new story, that explores the characters of this universe in new and unexpected ways, focusing on those who got the least development in the comics and film.

The animation is amazing, it reminds me of Mob Psycho 100 in the best possible ways.

The only small negative is the cast. While it is amazing they got the original actors back, it is obvious some of them are not voice actors. Most of them do a great job, but some of them are just OK. (It is not bad enough to take off a whole point though, as most of the main characters do a great job.)

As a fan of both the comics and the film, this is an amazing addition to the universe. However, those expecting a one-to-one adaptation might be disappointed. That is what I expected as well, but was very pleasantly surprised by getting an expansion of the universe instead.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off... literally
waterbottle-2046317 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I get they wanted to try something different, but they really missed the mark.

They could of easily had Scott AND Ramona with the same amount of character development, but I guess they had to fake us out because they had no faith in a Ramona only show?

I feel if they made it abundantly clear Scott was going to be sidelined, I would have zero issues. I feel there wouldn't have been any push back.

BUT it's the fact the trailers and even the intro pass this off as something it isn't.

Overall, not bad but not good. A disappointment to me because I was excited to see Scott in animation but whatever.

Different but glad it was.

Warning: Spoilers
Animation was great. Characters stayed true to what we know and love.

Yes it turns out to be a completely new story. A kind of sequel.

It took me completely by surprise. But watching the first episode I was enjoying it but felt it wasn't as good as either the comic or the live action movie. Those are classics and some of my favourite peices of media out there.

So for it to be something completely new that is made by the original creators was great news. I realized during that first episode that I don't need a recreation of something I already love.

My only complaint is that sometimes the acting was fairly obvious that they were filmed completely separately so you didn't get the same chemistry you get in the live action.

But everything else I enjoyed and will watch again. A great addition to a great series.

The Netflixification of Scott Pilgrim.
awsafzidane17 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
It's not bad per se, but it left me disappointed because I had huge expectations due to its name. It has some good moments and a decent story, but it doesn't meet the standards set by Scott Pilgrim Vs The World which is an all-time favourite of mine. And its titular character remaining absent for most of the time did not do the show any favour.

This animé styled show takes an entirely different approach to the movie (and comics) as it tells a completely new story. But the problem is it was not promoted as such. As a result, fans of the movie/comics who watch this with high expectations will feel disappointed.

It lacks the energy and dynamism of the movie and Edgar Wright's trademark humour. It feels like Netflix really hired Edgar Wrong to create this.

THE ARTSTYLE THE CHARACTERS
vbppmn17 November 2023
I LOVED THIS SERIE SINCE FOREVER and to see it finally get animated brings joy to my heart.

The art style is amazing, and the studio bringing the old movie cast back was such a small yet amazing idea, the colors are amazing, and the animation is fun for the eyes.

It's not completely flawless tho, So many scenes are missing and the slice-of-life moments older fans loved and enjoyed aren't really there which is not going to ruin the show for you unless you read the comics Other than that the series is going to be something fun and new and I really recommend watching it and investing some time in the franchise.

Kind of like "Masters of the Universe" but a bit better
cfinley-258013 December 2023
While I am happy that instead of just telling the same Scott Pilgrim story a third time in a new media form, I do have to say that like in Masters of the Universe where He-man was heavily featured in the promos but is missing for 80% of the actual show, this show does the same with Scott Pilgrim.

Despite being the titular character, Scott Pilgrim is gone for the majority of the episodes as the series instead focuses on Ramona Flowers and several secondary characters of the series. While this was not a terrible decision, it was more than a bit misleading.

Other than that, the series has all of the zany weirdness common in Scott Pilgrim media. While the jokes and situations aren't as good as the comic or the movie, I am definitely awaiting a second season, hopefully with more actual Scott Pilgrim this time.

Also, props on pretty much all of the film's actor's reprising their roles for the animated series.

Why the bait?
morin-a-philippe17 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Why did they promote this show like it was going to be an adaptation of the books? I absolutely love the comic it's one my favourite book ever and was ecstatic to know we were getting an animated adaptation I thought finally people who watched the movie and didn't read the books would get a chance of seeing the original story with its characters development.

Calling that an adaptation tho does a disservice to the original material and to this show and I don't understand what's the point of changing the story like that. It's not like Scott Pilgrim is a well established franchise where everyone knows how the story go so putting a twist makes it interesting. I would've honestly watched any story around those books, but this just takes a story I love and pull it apart.

This just makes me sad.

It was alright
GoatedPunisher1 December 2023
This is my introduction to the franchise, I've heard about both the movie and the comics being really good so I gave this a chance.

It was...alright? Only 8 episodes, it doesn't really drag for long but it wasn't anything special; the animation was great but the story was pretty meh, I really liked the first and last 2 episodes, which means that pretty much everything that had Ramona as the protagonist was average at best. I liked cool, non-stereotypical female characters and Ramona is that but she's just not that interesting as an MC. Finding out that this isn't a direct adaptation makes everything make sense, this was definitely something that was created for the old fans. She has a past, a IDGAF attitude and a cool design which on paper sounds good but just isn't as entertaining as Scott which is your average lovable idiot and watching him try his best is what makes the show shine.

I can now see why fans would be upset at the misguided promotion that led them to believe the show would be an adaptation of the original. Although I'm not so sure I'd enjoy it more if they had adapted the original story, the evil exes were just not entertaining to watch either, most of them were kind of cringe, and not fun cringe, just sad corny cringe. I think it'd been better if it had been Ramona who had disappeared or something, I don't know, I wasn't expecting anything and was sure not amazed.

Different, amazing, and stunning
operez-2788717 November 2023
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is uniquely in the sense of everything. Watching the movie and then coming to this you may think some parts are being rush or wrong, but SPTO retells the story in a new and original way taht is just perfect. This show adds lots of new and original content with the same old humor we love. The art style is perfect for Scott's story and does justice to all the iconic moments we know and love from the original movie and then some. SPTO cast and crew truly love this series and it shows from it humor, animation, acting and peak story. This is everything and more than what the fans expect. Netflix thanks you.

Perfect just like the Movie
camduh17 November 2023
The show was quirky, fast an so Spontaneous just like the Comics, Cera Winstead an Evans were the Highlights even Showing off Bhabha's Patel as more then the first Ex an leading man Material. The rest of the cast were great an bringing back the voices from the movie was Perfect. Larson and Culkins characters still iconic an Knives is still innocent as ever an you can't stop the language that Plazas character brings to the table. The animation was very defying an fit the vibe in every episode from the Ex's behind the scenes stories that we never knew we needed. Hopefully this show lasts a few more seasons because we need this. 10/10.

An interesting adaptation
calahao19 November 2023
Scott Pilgrim takes off has been heavily prommoted as an adaptation of the comics, down to the casting of most of the film's actors. And indeed, the first episode does more or less follow the events of the first issue.

Then it takes a radical swerve, and the events from then on make this it's own unique work.

This isn't a bad thing, as it acts as a sort of alternate timeline to the events of the comic, and allows a deeper exploration of Ramona Flowers, which has been criticised as a bit shallow. Here, she gets quite an interesting character development in dealing with her mistakes

The animation is artistically close to the comics, which is a mixture of western and anime styles. Its purposely janky at times, but capable of remarkable fluidity.

Overall, an interesting experience, so long as you're open to a "what if" scenario.

Honest Review - A funny mess of subverting expectations.
MiloSuperSpesh18 November 2023
They took the film and litteraly tore it to shreds (not read comics), they then took those pieces, threw them on the floor, then took turns to throw darts at the shreds and what ever got a dart was what they combined and to fill in some gaps just copied kevin smiths he man revelations.

Music - opening theme is trying a bit hard to emulate cowboy bebop, the episodes have some good tunes for the most part, not sure about ep2 song by scots ex.

Fights - lets just say if you want movie fights redone in anime you'll be disapointed by the mind boggling lack of them, but for the fights we do get are pretty good.

Animation - mixes the comic's look with an updated style, but can't decide between choppy action or smooth transitions, some of it is smooth but a lot is choppy which some might find jarring.

Voice work - some of them sound a bit bored / phoning it in early on in the season, then everyone seems to find their grove and it shows.

Overall - it's fun, seems to get a bit lost in the middle with all the changes and then scrambles to get back on track in the last 2 episodes. Ending is pretty good, but it still feels anticlimatic.

A good message, but a purely biased story
bayvibes24 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
My main critic on this is that the plot point where we learn about older Scott pilgrim, they show a bitter old and vengeful childish image of the character, in an attempt to villainise the male protagonist of the main show.

While they failed to elaborate older Scott's perspective, they portray Ramona as a flawless character. They also added an element of double standard at the ending when older Ramona told old Scott that he could have worked on the relationship when she was the one who left. She left but still expects Scott to do all the work on himself and woo her, without her taking any accountability or giving support or putting anything on the table.

Without providing older Scott's perspective, without depicting a realistic female lead and relationship dynamic, I feel that the story lacks a realistic dynamic, but still wants to impose a biased message on its male audience.

Some elements of the story and message were good, I felt a lot of the story was to make a satire out of the male characters in the story and show all powerful and flawless female characters, instead of bringing them to a point of understanding where both sides see their flaws and perspectives.

Scottpocalypse Now: Redux
residentgrigo18 November 2023
I read the comics before the film came out and even played the game making me the bullseye for the target demographic. The audiovisual aspects are top notch so let´s just move on. Would I have liked a more direct adaptation? I prefer the comic, so maybe, but actually not. The score would have remained the same and the anime would have also left my memory for the same reason most 1-to-1 anime adaptations do. I can´t stop thinking about this adaptation on the other hand and not only due to its "canonical" implications. Treating comics as raw storyboards is the easy path. Well, easier. Making a 00s nerd culture show would have dated the anime before it even aired and made it a side product to the movie, especially due to the returning cast. A deconstruction of that generation of entertainment and adaptations is hard to forget on the other hand. A few characters, Knives most of all, end up underserved (but not Scott) and I wouldn´t have minded a present-day, well 00s, version of Nega Scott either. Ramona develops less than one would think as the audience's viewpoint now switches to her for about 4 eps but this isn´t really "her" show either. The exes take the stage and boy howdy do they. Gideon being able to carry his own plots divorced from what came before isn´t surprising but Lucas and Matthew of all people really surprised me. Newcomers need to have experienced at least one older version of the tale to "get" what is happening here and why as this is sometimes a prequel and later even a sequel to the comic. That is the real "issue" with the show but I would argue that the anime is strong enough to get you interested in the rest of the story. Even the film version becomes a plot point and I liked those 2 eps the most. I wonder if Bryan Lee O'Malley will call it quits here. I don´t think so but a second season or a page-by-page adaptation makes little sense after unleashing this labyrinth of deconstruction.

Scott is still the protagonist. He still drives the plot even after he "Takes Off" and not Ramona but the people complaining clearly don´t know what defines a protagonist. Or that fans would be the first to want to read a comic about her and her social circle. Her new plot doesn´t even lead anywhere but how could it? The story is many things but it´s mostly a slice of life and no one is the protagonist of that. No real villains either. Putting "the plot" on pause for 5 eps was a ballsy decision and I wish that more people had the balls to lie about what their latest IP entry is about. Druckmann, Kojima and O'Malley certainly know how to keep an IP fresh. When the sun comes up, I'm down!

PS: The author divorced 4 years after the comic concluded after 14 years of marriage.

I like the artstyle but..
yukiali17 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I really loved the artstyle and the fighting scenes.

The first two episodes were great, but then...

It becames Ramonas show. And this really sad, because then they had should named the show Ramona takes off or something like that.

This is really irritating and typical for netflix, to replace male main roles with women.

I was so hyped for this and then i really was disappointed, it should have been Scott show not Ramonas or, like I said, rename it.

The show still got his moments and I also loved the music. But like others I thought, they would make the series more based on the comics.

This is only my opinion....

Not the adaption we expected, but the Sequel we needed(light spoilers)
ForeverRed0517 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I won't spoil more about the plot but go into this thinking of it as a sequel to the movie and you will enjoy it. It is not a straight adaption all though episode 1 would have you believing that. (Also I'll preface the review by saying I've never read the graphic novels.)

The cast is probably my biggest gripe about the show as it's evident some of them have never done voice work before. Particularly when it comes to Scott, he felt a bit flat and often I couldn't feel the emotion to him but I'm also not a huge fan of Cera so take from that what you will. That being said I really enjoyed the characters themselves and the directions they took. It really went out of it's way to flesh out more to all the characters that we never spent time with in the movie. Giving the evil exes more depth, showing more to their relationships with romana as well as their own stories was a great decision. Romana herself was also way better performance wise then she was in the movie. She felt way too cold and flat back then and now she actually felt like a character who all these people would want to date. She laughed, smiled, cared and didn't just randomly go called in the middle of the plot it was great and made her a much more likable character.

The animation, music, the comedy bits and setting all draw you into this story and paint a beautiful picture of romance. Which is worth watching if you liked the original movie and want something that expands on that world. If you never saw the movie, the show does a fairly good job of explaining the events of it at one point so it's good for new comers to this fandom too!

Scott Pilgrim: Smaller, Longer, and Uncut
blmulholland-142614 December 2023
If you haven't seen Scott Pilgrim the movie, go watch that. It's better than this in almost every way. While this is good in it's own right, it's significantly LESS good with alot more dead space that feels like time filler.

If I hadn't seen the movie, I might well have been impressed with this show's style and fun. But because of the movie, it feels redundant. Sure, the plot is NOT the same...actually, aside from VERY high level bullet points, it's not even close to the same.

But I still walk away wondering -- why? Why produce a less tight, less clever, less funny, lower budget, cash-grabby version of the movie? Again, not that this series is bad, far from it. There are good jokes. There are good action sequences. The voice acting is good (often the same people from the movie). I don't love the animation style that looks like a mashup of anime and cartoon network's minimalism...but whatever.

Much like the movie (and I presume the comic which I have never read), video game tropes are made real. Just about every superhero sci-fi or magic thing you can think of seems to be real in this world...though without ANY explanation whatsoever. It's like the show is thumbing it's nose at our desire for any of this stuff to make sense.

It has the same humor style as the original. I love the papparazzi. The evil exes get more space to be people and have character arcs, which is nice. There's time travel that comes out of nowhere. It's definitely not bad...it just can't hold a candle to the movie.

Incredibly disappointing
jellopuke2 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Hey, did you like the Scott Pilgrim comic, movie, or video game? If so, then here's a show that is NONE of those things. Now that doesn't mean it's bad, but you should know it's not Scott Pilgrim. It's a show about Ramona searching for him despite having ZERO reason to. They went on one date, not exactly searching for your lost love material.

Mostly this show is just a remixed version, taking some scenes or characters and messing with them in an attempt to focus on different people for longer periods of time. It's alternate backstory and motivations for people that weren't present in the other versions. Also, the people that had lots of focus in the other versions get the shaft here.

I guess I don't know who this is really for because you have to know the original version to know what's going on here, but it's so different that you will probably be annoyed.

The voice acting is pretty bad, especially Ramona who sounds like she's asleep the whole time BUT the art is tremendous. The last episode is okay I guess, but the endless meta stuff is lame as F.

Overall a crushingly bad adaptation and a so-so remix (but who wanted a remix?) BLEH.
