Joko Anwar is a master at his own game
theffachrif14 August 2022
I would say that this movie is slightly better than the previous one, but this one is more filled with a lot of spooky stuff that you can expect from a good horror movie. The plot didn't have much difference, it was still filled with a lot of mystery about the cult itself and left us with more questions and theories. They definitely saving something big for the next one. I'm surprised when they somehow connect the story with a real-life history, that's just a smart move by Joko Anwar.

The technical aspects of this movie are top-notch for an Indonesian horror movie and superior than the first one. I still can't get over how beautiful the cinematography is, especially for the exterior shots. And the production design is great as well, we got traveled back to the 80s.

My favorite part is the moment leading up to the elevator accident, there were so many things going on, and the music that plays along with it makes the moment very chaotic and intense.

Less than Impetigore but better than the first SS (in technical achievements)
ravensomeproduction4 August 2022
A new breakthrough for Indonesian horror films of course, but the weakness lies in the forced and hasty plot. Regarding technical achievements, there is rapid progress compared to the previous film, the cinematography is superb, sound design is really good and the IMAX's crystal clear mastered is tye new game here!. But the problem is on the direction itself, i think is not as good as Joko Anwar's previous work Impetigore, it's too rushy, the plot seems forced to be associated with historical events, but the correlation does not make any sense at all if you think about the first Satan's Slave details and plot. But so far, Satan's Slave 2 provides an interesting and exciting spectacle and a roller coaster ride! Tari characters? What a wasted talent! This character supposedly got more interesting role play better than just a layer character guest.

7,5/10.

Joko Anwar raises the bar again, others but few might not be able to catch up!
hiraishinnojutsu5 August 2022
Bigger, braver, more brutal, Joko Anwar sets new standard for Indonesian horror visual storytelling with each release of Pengabdi Setan's installment. But as usual with Joko, some parts work really well, others seem to be unfit in a 2-hour movie medium that are sometimes hard to ignore. But other than that, it's an excellent alternative for those suffering from Hollywood fatigue, thanks to all those homages towards 60's - 80's horror movies, the period where Hollywood still knew how to make movies, including horror/thriller

8.5/10.

Same-same but different. And not for the better ones
pasaribuharisfadli4 August 2022
While the canvas seems to get broader, Pengabdi Setan 2: Communion basically is a rehash of its predecessor with a different setting. The atmosphere and anticipation build-up are admirable but the flow of the action tends to drag and be repetitive. And like most of Joko Anwar's films, the third act is somewhat half-baked and anticlimactic.

An electrifying ride
Ansango8 January 2023
SATAN'S SLAVE 2:COMMUNION is a terrific horror film which has a great atmosphere and succeeds immensely due to the competent direction of Joko Anwar. The plot is good but could have used more focused writing. The pace is slow but it methodically builds towards a tremendous finale although the information-dense climax leaves a lot to be desired in terms of the resolution of various threads, due to that the film feels a bit like a filler for the third part of the franchise.

If you want to see how to effectively build a great thrilling scene, look no further than the elevator crash scene and how Anwar builds it to a great crescendo using superb camerawork and sublime cuts. Also, the scene of Tari's prayer is exceptionally conceived and the use of close-ups and long takes is exemplary.

On a standalone basis, it's still a solid horror film with an effective mood, awesome technical aspects, brilliant acting and excellent scares but could have been much better only if the plot gave us some idea of what we are dealing with here. Let's hope the next part gives answers to those burning questions. But for now, I am extremely contented by what was offered and would easily term it better than its predecessor simply due to its expansive scope and the way it organically builds upon its predecessor without falling into the traps of redundancy and ridiculousness.

Just go for it!

A fun rollercoaster ride with too much 'huh?'
daryopeek4 August 2022
Watching this film is an enjoyable experience. Joko Anwar can optimally use the setting to create a fun haunted house throughout the runtime. Not only that, we also get more explanations (and additional questions as well) about Satan's Slaves universe.

This shows the director already has strong concept about where the saga would go, but at the same time I know this sequel won't be the end, hence the ending feels like an abrupt intermission with lots of flashing lights. However, I think this movie is a great sequel from the predecessor, and it shows with the right hand, Indonesian horror sequel can be a good thing to see. I might want to watch this movie again.

My opinion
mak7shurko17 January 2023
No so bad no so good. The actors acted very strangely. There were lingering moments. In some places it was interesting and there were feelings for the characters, sometimes not. I can't call it scary, but I can't call it calm either. The idea is very good, I liked it very much, well, like all classic horror films. I advise you to watch it, but do not expect a super duper wow and a very big fear from everything. I liked the moment a lot, I hope people who watched me will understand, I don't want to spoil it. Good luck to everyone, delicious food, cool sensations. Pleasant viewing. And of course Glory to Ukraine.

Whirlwind of familiarity manages some unique creepy horror fun moments
PutneyTrope10 November 2022
Indonesian horror film that reminded me of Terrified (2017), The Shining (1980), The Gate (1987), and approximately 238 haunted apartment building films. It was fun enough and had enough young protagonists that I was initially inclined to suggest it as an intermediate horror film for early-teens. I changed my mind when I realized that it's not really a good film to get too attached to any characters. It's violent, gory, and has some solid make-up that was genuinely creepy. Some excellent set pieces. The film takes advantage of blinking lights and sudden room illumination via lightning for many of it's scares. A few moments were chilling enough to have stuck with me. The story itself was fairly easy to follow (this is a sequel, by the way, a fact I learned after viewing. It didn't seem to detract from the flow or require having seen the first film). Plenty is left for you to assume until towards the end when the film dumps almost too much information on you. I found the Indonesian culture and burial practices interesting. The characters and actors were all solid. No one was unwatchable. The film is two hours long and feels it. I'm not going to complain much because it kept me interested all the way through. I enjoyed having trope after trope flung at me because some did have interesting twists. I liked it and can't think of any real reasons not to recommend it. I'm definitely going to seek out the first film, which should be a recomendation in itself.

The whole movie is all about jump scare. There is no clear story.
bebyhanzian5 August 2022
It is not make any sense if someone can scream and the other people can't hear. Because the building has hollow in the middle.

This movie has too many unneccessary characters and scenes. For example, the three children died in the ground of the lift, the tree boys do some unimportant scenes that do not support the main story, etc.

I think, Joko Anwar has failed this time. Sorry.

Pengabdi Setan 2: "Communion" it's easily Joko's best directed effort to date!
oliverschofield5 August 2022
5 years ago, director Joko Anwar made an Indonesian horror movie called "Satan's Slaves" (Pengabdi Setan) which was a remake of a 1982 Indonesian horror movie that had simply been called "Satan's Slave." Now Joko has made a sequel titled "Satan's Slaves 2: Communion" and took to social media to announce that this will be the first film from Indonesia to be released in the large screen IMAX format!. Satan's Slaves 2: "Communion" will be showing on 9 IMAX screens in the country when it's released on August 4th.

Starring Tara Basro (Rini) Satan's Slaves 2: "Communion" told the story of a woman and her family who are terrorized in their apartment and learn that the woman's dead mother was involved in the occult. Tara Basro reprises her role in Satan's Slaves 2: "Communion," where she is trying to break the curse on the apartment.

REVIEW: This movie is powerful haunting, chilling and engrossing. A gripping, intensely frightening watch. Joko Anwar is an absolute genius in the horror genre, he knows exactly how to chill you to the bone. "Pengabdi Setan 2: Communion" it's easily Joko's best directed effort to date, this movie is creepy as hell intermittently nightmarish, tense, gross, unsettling and in its purest form scary. The cast is well chosen, the kids are good too. The directing by Joko Anwar is well-paced and effective showing you all you want to see, providing real scream out loud scares. He doesn't use unnecessary shock tactics or film too much in the dark.

"Pengabdi Setan 2: "Communion" is my very first time after 20 years didn't watch horror movie its because Joko Anwar directed and this movie is simply one of the best horror movies I ever seen. The lighting, color palette, the screenplay, the stunning cinematography, clear visual storytelling, great background music and phenomenal pacing and great performances just engaging. This film is not about a jumpscare scene but more than that every chilling scene build with a gorgeous tone of colours. This is classic and do yourself a favour to watch it, worth every penny and I think I should watch it again for the 2nd time and for Joko Anwar you have done a great job!

Horror films were better years ago feel like haven't seen a new horror movie that's truly had me scared to close my eyes or wanting to watch a kids movie after but this one perfectly haunting.

The portion scene of each character, well make up and Joko Anwar didn't do CGI neither Green Screen and shout out to well scoring by Bembi Gusti, Tony Merie and Aghi Narottama.

Good atmosphere in every scene, an interesting story line and all the movie players with perfect acting quality for this movie. This is the best Indonesian horror movie I have ever seen, many scenes are scary and also good film soundtrack ringing me thoughts for days after watch it.

One has to be impressed by the rich cinematography from "Ical Tanjung" and a great use of the Indonesian landscape not least of all in the old apartment sequences, not being familiar with Indonesian cinema so I would assume it is a fairly high quality budget affair and one would never know that from the crisp colors and even well-chosen brown tints on screen. Perhaps technology is becoming affordable and the world is playing on a more even field because this is Hollywood-grade art.

For the most part, its horror is really well done. The flick is rather gripping too with an interesting story that unfolds naturally and deliberately, it's a really solid effort even if it isn't particularly scary overall and it's really well made in almost every regard.

FINAL VERIDCT: Joko Anwar did a very good job to bring out the best of the actors on this production, the child actors gonna blew you away in admiration. I was shocked that there are comedy in this movie, a good one but for me the portion are a little bit too much but still worth to watch.

I expected this movie to be good and it doesn't disappointed me, what really shines here is the outstanding and confident direction by Joko Anwar. He does a good job with the horror and the scares but even more so with the human relationships, this is a very well thought out movie with a clever plot and storyline and solid execution. Definitely worth a watch, don't let the title mislead you!

Indonesian horror never disappoints
I am a big fan of Indonesian horror, and a lot of that has to do with this director. I definitely enjoyed the first movie in the series and enjoyed this one as well for similar/ different reasons.

I found most of these characters quite endearing and relatable which I think really helped the appeal here. Opposed to the first, I felt this one did not take itself quite as seriously and had lighter moments throughout while still keeping you in the creepy, atmospheric ongoings. Also, I'm not a huge fan of jump scares so be forewarned, they are utilized here.

The story was chock-full of different layers and intricacies that were interesting details... but also may have gotten a tad convoluted at times. I found myself questioning exactly what was going on at points, but this is also as an English speaker reading subtitles. It is inevitable some things will get lost in translation.

I would like to view this again as I think I will enjoy it even more, especially if viewed right after the first one. I really enjoyed both, this is a high 6 and I would recommend.

In many things the director was able to motivate the audience, but the story was weak and had no meaning. The first Movie was excellent, but this one was disappointing.

Felt like a 10$ trip to horror mansion of jump scares.
HotDoggyBoomBooM20 December 2022
2hrs almost 2hrs and what got me to sit was the hype where a guy fainted watching this. So i decided to watch this movie and dont get me wrong the filim deserves praise for a scary right from the begining but as the movie plot goes on and on it get more scary the eerie appartment and tenants all addding up to the horror thats about to happen.

And this i gotto say it is not a type of movie to watch alone at midnight i tried to give it a go till around 50mins but couldn't which i give a thumbs up not all horror movie gives that vibe the elements of burnt corpse poppin ,suicide, mutilated corpse bags moving around and apparitions giving the silent hills vibe was good But depending on all these alone with a story so bland was a big let down.

A slow build up...
fatamorgana-4020825 February 2023
While I did like this movie, I think it was the victim of being the second movie in a trilogy. Everything that happened could have been done in an hour instead of the two-hour run time it had.

But it was beautifully shot. Many of the scary scenes are carried out to perfection with excellent lighting, or lack thereof, and the creepiness was off the charts. The characters were good, the story was good. It's very hard to make an entire apartment building scary but Joko Anwar did a fantastic job. I am a big fan of his work.

This movie was basically a set up for the next film to follow. But if you want to be scared at home while watching a movie, this has the ability to do that...

what I like, what I hate, but overall this is good
zaennuriluthfi3 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Moving on from the first series, well the first series is bad in my opinion. The Old Mama vintage gimmick ain't a tense at all...just like a few jumpscare and a.dim low lights for no reason.

Then it comes this second series, well this character acting is really well done and really good, 90's vibe is really amazing job done, but some times it still...make it's lighting so dim, like a smoke and mirror.to gain a scary vibes, that is doesn't make any sense to me, cause it just can be a jumping ghost and scare without lighting gimmicks and it's still works, instead of exaggerate dim lights unrealistic. And later on the old old formula to make jumpscare, (a bit spoiler) when a kid.had done to dump, he got a noise from his dead father.then the old formula jump is used, bombing scare at behind...I mean come on, that suck...why don't just use its dumping.aisle to slowly show a ghost aesthetically, instead of just boring old formula...

Well yeah, after all the horror elements is good, beside all those usual shroudy ghost, the 3 child ghost from lift accident is really hit me hard...sinister element, liminal space, a tragedy

but a.minor thing is using a flashy lights, that can cause a health risk to viewers..flash lights warning is.should be added.

Love the movie so much, Joko Anwar did it again and even better but will never be as iconic as the first one. Definitely not 10/10 but a must watch, it's bigger, scarier and better.

Not as good as first one
jeremy-sigarlaki14 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
To be honest, its kinda let down since i came to theater with hopes high up.

First hour of the movie is sure boring, i don't feel the tension, only a few jumpscare.

They introduce a few characters, with no relevance for the story, just some scared folks at the apartment, and we never know what their background, how can they relate to the stories overall and then they just die, its just not making any sense to me.

And when it reached the ends, its surely anticlimactic, a man came, firing few shoots, and show off his staff to expell the demon, and just march safely even when they being outnumbered.. duh.

Disappointing, i'm not even scared.
bfkpqxq14 August 2022
The jumpscares are very predictable and overused. Lots of sub plot that just adds to nothing. Basically this is just your average jumpscare and no story progression at all. Joko anwar is trying to milk this series dry and cant really develop the story.

Good character and theme enhanchment
alryausteners30 August 2022
Watching it feels like watching ''the conjuring'' and playing 'resident evil' at the same time. I have to watch and think about the little things I missed in Ssatan slave 1. Many easter eggs and mysteries of Satan slave 1 are revealed here. I hope that Mr. Joko Anwar can provide surprises and more development moments coming from the Easter Egg from Servant of Satan 2 for the next sequel.

The insertion of dark historical events in Indonesian conditions at that time in my opinion is a storyline framework that is very well added to perfect the ''story telling'' in this story.

Can't wait for the next mystery to be revealed in the next sequel.

amalpbabu-268833 January 2023
Really disappointed with the second part it doesn't meet the standard of first part . First part is awesome and the second one is a totally disaster . I'm not even scared in single scene. The jumpscares are very predictable and overused. Lots of sub plot that just adds to nothing. Basically this is just your average jumpscare and no story progression at all. Joko anwar is trying to milk this series dry and cant really develop the story. I have troubles while submitting this review because i don't have more words to add in this review there's nothing interesting scenes in this movie to describe .

NEW INDONESIAN HORROR MOVIE STANDARD
megseyo10 August 2022
I have watched this movie 2 times and every second I watched the movie is so siiicckkkk.

My first experience: The movie is so scary, the scoring and the cinematography are 100/10. How he built the ambiance slowly but deadly but then we were surprised with the jump scares. Like riding a rollercoaster, after make we tensed up then we laughed but then tensed up again. I felt like I can't breathe there because the movie is scary enough to make me cover my face for half of the last movie.

In the background of a large building, he can create a claustrophobic impression with just epic natural lighting. How we care for the characters because of their excellent acting. Oh, this movie is fulfill my expectation and standard of horror movies.

My second experience : I tried to be braver than yesterday, I didn't close my eyes and tried to watch the entire story. And then I realized so many things, every detail, and I was like, "this movie is so dope! The theories, the facts, the plot" Genius!

I recommend to watch in the IMAX studio and experience it properly!
