Writer/director Eric England has made a name for himself in the horror genre by bending familiar genres into new and unique shapes, whether it's his debut feature Madison County, a take on the slasher movie mixed with ’70s survival horror, or 2013's Contracted, his version of a body horror film and more (although to say exactly what would spoil one of that movie's best surprises). England's fourth feature, Get the Girl, continues this tradition of genre-bending by mashing up a dark comedy, heist movie, crime thriller, and romance into one slick, sharp package.
Daily Dead recently spoke with England (listen below) about the process of writing and directing Get the Girl and how it differs from his previous work. As always, England is candid and funny in talking about his movie—arguably his most accomplished effort to date.
Get the Girl is available on VOD and iTunes now. Genre fans should totally watch it.

Ever since it's release via IFC Midnight on March 18, 2014, filmmaker Eric England's indie 'body horror' flick Contracted has been burning up DVD and VOD, and we've got first word on the successful feature's inevitable sequel.
Starring Najarra Townsend, Caroline Williams (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Alice Macdonald, Katie Stegeman, Matt Mercer, Charley Koontz, Simon Barrett, Ruben Pla, Dave Holmes and Celia Finkelstein, Contracted revolves around a 20's something Los Angeleno (Townsend), who finds herself infected with a rather potent sexual disease after being date-raped at a party.
"IFC has asked us for a sequel," filmmaker England, whose previously wrote and directed the genre feature Madison County, told us this morning of a potential follow-up to Contracted.
"I told the producers I wasn't interested, because I never envisioned a sequel in the first place, but if I came up with an idea that I felt lived up to or surpassed the first...

In college, I remember taking a class in which the professor showed a public service announcement that warned young adults about date-rape. The overall message—like in any stranger-danger warning—was that the effects of the incident don’t end with the morning-after guilt and that there is a fair chance that it could have been prevented all together.
It could be easily said that Contracted (2013) is like an hour and a half-long PSA, but it digs so much deeper than that. It reveals the daily self-consciousness and indignity endured by many women and the great lengths to which they are willing to go in order to achieve love and acceptance.

With four feature films already under his belt in the last few years, including Madison County and Contracted, Eric England is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with in the world of horror. And he's got two more headed our way. Read on for details!
Deadline reports that England, who was just signed by the Gersh Agency, is next set to direct the Tj Cimfel-scripted Hellbent, and he's also actively developing another horror film, called The Sirens.
Hellbent centers around a woman who joins a rescue crew to look for her husband after a mining accident and instead discovers a demonic presence.
As for The Sirens, that one is about a group of deep-sea fishermen who encounter four mysterious young women and get hooked into a ritual sacrifice.
Keep 'em coming, England!

We’re back with another edition of the Indie Spotlight, highlighting recent independent horror news sent our way. Today’s feature includes VOD release information for Armistice, multiple teaser trailers, a Q&A with Matt Thompson from Bloodline, and a preview of Dept. of Monsterology:
Dept. of Monsterology: ”Officially, it’s the Department of Cryptozoology, Mythological Studies, Parapsychology and Fortean Phenomena. But to the rest of the students and staff at the Dunsany College, baffled by the cloak of secrecy that surrounds the Department and its affairs, it has another, more dismissive, name: The Department of Monsterology. Funded by the mysterious Hampton Foundation, the Dept. operates several field teams that roam the globe on extended research expeditions.
Their brief: to investigate the dark and unexplored corners of our world – the places we’ve forgotten, lost or believe to be mythical. And to study those things that may still be lurking there.

Tagline: "Not Your Average One Night Stand." Director/writer: Eric England. Cast: Najarra Townsend, Caroline Williams, Alice Macdonald, Katie Stegeman and Matt Mercer. Sometimes horror films are morality plays. They warn you away from certain behaviours. Sometimes horror films play on a viewer's fears. Eric England's (Madison County) Contracted is a little bit of both of these concepts. Contracted involves one character's struggle to deal with a sexual infection. Samantha's (Najarra Townsend) devolvement into something monstrous puts the film squarely into body horror, while the consequences of unprotected sex reach a nightmarish conclusion. Contracted is a dramatic indie horror film, which will unsettle much of the film's target audience. The film begins with a scene of necrophilia, but quickly transitions to Sam and her struggles. Sam is a normal girl, dealing with some relationship issues. She is newly bisexual and quickly seduced into casual sex, with the help of intoxicants.

In Contracted a 20-something girl gets what she thinks is an Std after a night of reckless partying… turns out, it’s far worse than anything she could ever have imagined. Writer-director Eric England puts a strange, sexual new twist on the zombie genre, and he’s here to explain how and why!
Dread Central: Ok, so let’s face it… Contracted (review here) isn’t for everybody. How’s reaction to the film been so far?
Eric England: Really positive actually. I am really happy with how they…. I don’t wanna say I am shocked, but I don’t think you go in thinking they are going to love it. It’s been really good.
DC: I would have to say I was shocked, I will use the word, because it's not the kind of movie that is just another viral zombie thing… you really put a unique slant on it.

On November 22nd Eric England's new film Contracted (review) arrived in limited theaters and VOD outlets (including iTunes, Xbox, PlayStation, Amazon Instant Video, GooglePlay, SundanceNow, and more) via IFC Midnight, and we got a chance to speak with the film's star, Najarra Townsend.
Dread Central: Eric told me that you are quite a trooper considering all the makeup and everything you had to go through. Can you tell me a little bit about what that process was like for you, having to sort of do your thing without being able to see?
Najarra Townsend: We luckily had an amazing special effects artist. She just made everything comfortable. I feel like this could have been a disaster for my face, but luckily she was awesome. I just found it to be really fun. I mean, there were challenges that came with it, [but] even the not seeing kind of helped with my character.

Now we’re at the start of the movie’s release and we wanted to find out a bit more information about this gross-out new horror flick. Did the condom-industrial complex (or “Big Propha,” as we conspiracy theorists like to call it) secretly finance Contracted? Probably not. But this new horror film from writer-director Eric England (Madison County) does sound like the ultimate in safe-sex commercials. Najarra Townsend (Me and You and Everyone We Know) plays a young woman named Samantha who contracts a gruesome disease after spending the night with a mysterious man (You’re Next screenwriter Simon Barrett) in what is being hyped as “a zombie film like you’ve never imagined.”

Every time another indie horror film about women hits the scene, I open my reviews with comments on movies like May, Grace, Teeth, Inside, and The Woman: smart, dark, insightful films -- all written and directed by men -- that aim to shed some light on that most fascinating of all animals: the human female. One certainly wishes we had more films like this that come from female filmmakers (like this year's rather impressive American Mary), but at least there are some men out there who clearly take female characters very seriously.
You can add the new indie horror film Contracted to that list. Written and directed by Eric England (Madison County), Contracted is little more than a character study of a woman who is slowly (and literally) falling apart -- but is too busy, too naive, and too damn scared to face her problems and get her life back on track.

IFC Midnight has picked up the North American rights to the horror film "Contracted." The film follows a girl named Samantha who engages in a casual one-nigh-stand with a stranger and begins to show symptoms of what she assumes is a sexually transmitted disease. Eventually, it begins to reveal itself as something far more disturbing and horrific. The film was directed by Eric England, whose previous works in the genre include "Madison County" and recently contributed to the horror anthology "Chilling Visions: 5 Senses of Fear." IFC Midnight plans to release "Contracted" in November.

Anthologies are all the rage now. It seems like not that long ago they were incredibly rare. Then there was Trick r’ Treat and V/H/S (and the upcoming V/H/S/2) and The ABCs of Death (which is also getting a sequel). Now cable is getting in on the action. Chiller will debut the original movie Chilling Visions: 5 Senses of Fear on Friday, May 31.
The short films are directed by some promising newcomers including Eric England (Madison County) and Jesse Holland and Andy Mitton (YellowBrickRoad). As per usual for anthologies the quality runs the gamut, but overall the entire endeavor is lacking in imagination. It only really comes to life in the home stretch. The first three entries are pretty lackluster.

Tagline: "Don't touch anyone." Director Eric England (Madison County) has recently completed the horror thriller Contracted. Starring Najarra Townsend (The Dawning), Contracted plays on fears of sexually transmitted infections, based on the film's plot and promotional material. Now, the film has a second movie poster, which can be seen here. Details on the film's story are sparse. But, the film centrally focuses on the character Samantha. Samantha comes down with a mysterious illness after a brief sexual encounter. Has Samantha contracted an Sti, or something much worse? The second poster for the film (above) shows Samantha and a bio-hazard sign. The graphic alludes to a more deadly infection than a simple Sti and a trailer for Contracted is sure to be released soon. Director/wrtier: Eric England. Cast: Najarra Townsend, Caroline Williams, Alice Macdonald and Katie Stegeman. *no trailer available. Source: Contracted at the Film Catalogue ...

With Michael Berryman, Sully Erna and Nick Principe already in the cast of their upcoming film, you'd think producer Chad Verdi and Woodhaven Productions would rest on their laurels. But that's far from the case as the team has enlisted Tony Todd for their Army of the Damned.
"Tony Todd is a great actor and a horror legend," Verdi said. "He was the last piece of the puzzle that I felt this film needed to be the blockbuster I know it will be."
Todd will join Berryman, Erna and Principe along with entertainer Joey Fatone and former professional wrestlers Tommy Dreamer and Thea Trinidad as well as David Chokachi, Jackie Moore and Tom Paolino in the Army of the Damned cast. The film will be directed by Tom DeNucci and photographed by cinematographer Sam Eilertsen. You can keep updated on the project by 'liking' Army of the Damned on Facebook.

Madison County director Eric England’s poster for his new film Contracted features a haunting image of star Najarra Townsend who plays a woman with a mysterious illness. According to plot details, she’s a “young girl that has a one night stand with a random stranger and contracts what she thinks is an Std... but is actually something much worse."
Simon Barrett who also wrote segments for V/H/S, The ABCs of Death and V/H/S/2 stars alongside Caroline Williams, Katie Stegeman, Charley Koontz, E-Kan Soong, Matt Mercer, Alice Macdonald, Jennifer Gonzalez, Ruben Pla, and Lionel D. Carson.
England said his movie may make you think twice about going home with that cute urban lumberjack from your neighborhood bar and told Bloody Disgusting it “will do for hooking up with random strangers what Jaws did for going to the beach." I can’t wait to see who plays Brody.

Director Eric England rode the slasher train to popular acclaim with his indie hit Madison County but he's up for something far more personal with the upcoming Contracted, a film he once told Bloody Disgusting he hopes "will do for hooking up with random strangers what Jaws did for going to the beach."Now in post, Contracted stars Najarra Townsend as "a young girl that has a one night stand with a random stranger and contracts what she thinks is an Std... but is actually something much worse." Were I the sort to make such jokes this is the point where I would make one about the entire film being a cautionary tale against having sex with Simon Barrett - who appears in a key role...

This past weekend indie filmmaker Eric England (Madison County) celebrated the world premiere of his latest directorial endeavor, the Hitchcockian thriller Roadside, at the first-ever CineMayhem Film Fest in Thousand Oaks.
The flick stars Ace Marrero, Katie Stegeman, Jack E. Curenton, Lionel D. Carson, and Marshall Yates.
