You might have heard praises of Dev Patel‘s Monkey Man everywhere. Patel’s Labor of Love is an intense, high-octane action-thriller soaked in vengeance and served on a delightful platter of emotion and culturally rich optics. After rave reviews and accolades at film festivals, the movie was finally released worldwide on April 5. And despite stiff competition from Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, the movie has swept into second place.
Among the new movies, Moneky Paw Production’s Monkey Man outperforms 20th Century Studios’ The First Omen, with $10.5 million to $8 million+. While Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire still holds strong. The movie was expected to make around $50 million at the domestic box office but made $80 million.
The box office numbers worldwide were also mindblowing as it made a whopping $194 million instead of its expected $135 million.

Wet Leg, Jason Isbell, Tegan and Sara, and more have contributed to Noise for Now: Vol. 1, an upcoming compilation album benefitting abortion access. It arrives on November 24th as part of Record Store Day 2023.
Noise for Now is also the name of the non-profit that helmed the compilation, and their work has become even more pertinent since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022. The organization launched their eponymous record label to release their first album, which also features exclusive songs from Sleater-Kinney, My Morning Jacket, Fleet Foxes, Cat Power, and more.
Many of these songs were also featured on Good Music to Ensure Safe Abortion Access to All, another benefit compilation from 2022 that was only available as a Bandcamp download for one day. Noise for Now: Vol. 1, however, will be a vinyl-only release, pressed on clear wax and packaged with a “Liberate Abortion” print by Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon.

Lainey Wilson was seemingly everywhere at the Academy of Country Music Awards, collecting four trophies on a night that saw Chris Stapleton win the entertainer of the year honour.
Wilson performed twice Thursday –- back-to-back –- and delivered heartfelt speeches after her wins, which put her next to fellow winners and country music legends.
She won album of the year for Bell Bottom Country accepting the honour slightly breathless after performing her song “Grease”.
Wilson called the album a “labor of love” and said she wrote 300 songs during the pandemic. She said people often tell her how much the album means to their lives, and she said writing them “saved mine.”

From his early success with “The Sixth Sense” and “Unbreakable” to his mid-2000s dry spell that included “After Earth” and “The Last Airbender,” M. Night Shyamalan’s roller coaster of a career has taken him through every level of Hollywood. The multi-hyphenate has found renewed success in recent years directing mid-budget genre films like “Old” and “Knock at the Cabin,” but that doesn’t mean he’s stopped thinking about some of the bigger projects that he flirted with over the years. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Shyamalan reflected on some of the projects that he came close to directing over the course of his three decade career.
“I loved the book ‘Life of Pi,’ and I was going to make it. But Ang Lee made a beautiful movie from it. That was one that I wished I did,” Shyamalan said. “In between the first two...

Peter Jackson’s mesmerizing Disney+ documentary The Beatles: Get Back was supposed to be a six-hour immersion into the recording of Let It Be and the last live concert by rock music’s most famous band before they split up and headed toward solo careers.
“I didn’t want to make the movie about the Beatles breaking up,” Jackson told Mike Fleming Jr. at Deadline’s Contenders TV: The Nominees panel. “It’s not a film about a band that’s breaking up — it’s about a band that’s trying not to break up.”

Fox alternative entertainment head Rob Wade said the quick spread of the Covid-19 delta variant this summer caught everyone off guard — and led to the outbreak of cases registered on the set of “The Masked Singer.”
Last month Los Angeles County’s Public Health department reported 12 confirmed positive Covid-19 cases at Red Studios Hollywood, where “The Masked Singer” was shooting its sixth season. Production wasn’t shut down, however, and Wade says the season — the first with an audience back in studio since the pandemic began — will look and feel much like a return to normal for the show.
But that took a lot of effort — and the outbreak had a “huge impact” on the show, Wade said. “You have to realize with ‘Masked Singer,’ we had done two seasons of ‘Masked Singer’ and a season of ‘Masked Dancer.’ This was our fourth ‘Masked’ franchise within 18 months. It’s all...

A thought-provoking film about the importance of architecture by three-time Oscar nominee Wim Wenders, and an investigative documentary about the troubled life and times of Egyptian heart-throb Omar Sharif are among 30 feature film projects to be pitched as part of the 8th edition of the Venice Gap-Financing Market, which runs Sept. 3-5 at the Venice Film Festival.
The projects, which all have at least 70% of their funding in place already, include the works of many other leading filmmakers, such as Fien Troch, Martin Rejtman, Jean-Gabriel Periot, Marjana Karanović, Aditya Vikram Sengupta and Simone Jaquemet.
Wenders’ documentary “The Secret of Places” investigates the role played by architecture in our everyday lives. It takes viewers on a tour of architect Peter Zumthor’s best-known buildings, and accompanies him during the construction of two recent creations – the new Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the extension of the Fondation Beyeler in Basel.

Universal Pictures has released the official trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s supernatural thriller “Old,” which is set to hit theaters on July 23.
After a group of travelers finds the body of a dead woman on a beach that swiftly decomposes, they begin to realize that there is something mysterious about this seemingly idyllic vacation destination. Hence the film’s title, the chilling trailer shows all of the characters on the beach aging rapidly as they try to find a way to escape the island’s treacherous curse. The film is an adaptation of “Sandcastle,” a 2010 graphic novel written by Pierre Oscar Lévy and illustrated by Frederik Peeters.
After working on two seasons of the psychological-horror series “Servant” for Apple TV Plus, “Old” is Shyamalan’s return to the big screen after 2019’s “Glass.” It also marks the director’s first pic to be shot on 35mm film since 2010’s “The Last Airbender.

With all due respect to “America’s Got Talent,” summer is not exactly the time when Nielsen ratings threaten to fall off the charts — at least, not the top of the charts. And when it comes to new series, a summer slot isn’t generally a vote of confidence from the network.
Due to coronavirus-forced production shutdowns, Summer 2020 should be an especially soft season. Click through our gallery to see how each freshman show’s debut on broadcast television fared in total viewers.

Fox is getting in on the reality dating show scene with its newest TV series Labor of Love. The show centers around Kristy Katzmann's quest to find a long-term partner who will also be the father of her future child. You may remember Kristy from her time on Brad Womack's season of The Bachelor, but unlike the ABC staple, Labor of Love didn't film in Los Angeles.
Kristy's tour de fatherhood (and romance!) kicked off in her hometown of Chicago, Il. We saw some of the Windy City's most notable landmarks as well as a few downtown hotspots like The Coffee Studio, a local coffee joint, and Ova Egg Freezing Specialty Center, where fellow Bachelor contest Whitney Bischoff Angel works as a nurse specialist.

“Labor of Love,” Fox’s new show which matches 41-year old Kristy Katzmann with 15 potential fathers to her child, debuted to pretty poor numbers on Thursday night.
The show’s premiere scored a 0.2 rating among adults 18-49 and drew only 909,000 total viewers, which represents the weakest debut of the season for Fox in both metrics. Earlier on, “Celebrity Watch Party” aired its third episode to a 0.3 rating and 1.4 million total viewers, down about 12% in audience from the week before.
ABC hit the fairway with its first drive of the summer, winning the night overall thanks partly to the season 2 premiere of mini-golf competition series “Holey Moley,” which scored a 0.8 rating and 4.4 million pairs of eyeballs. Ratings: ABC Scores With ‘Holey Moley’ Return, Fox’s ‘Labor of Love’ Debut Doesn’t Earn Lots of Love
ABC scored a Thursday win in ratings and total viewers with the Season 2 premiere of “Holey Moley,” a new episode of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” and the return of “To Tell the Truth,” according to preliminary data from Nielsen.
Meanwhile, Fox’s debut of reality dating series “Labor of Love,” which follows “Bachelor” alum Kristy Katzmann on her hunt for her perfect man/sperm donor, combined with weak performer “Celebrity Watch Party” to land the broadcaster in a tie with Spanish-language network Telemundo for fifth place in the key demo.
Over on NBC, the “Celebrity Escape Room” special was neck and neck with “Holey Moley” and “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” for the night’s highest-rated show.

The summer season on the broadcast networks kicked off Thursday night to decidedly mixed results. ABC's game-show lineup performed solidly and led the night among adults 18-49. Hey, "Labor Of Love" fans. Tonight, May 21, 2020, the series premiere episode 1 of Fox's new dating reality show "Labor Of Love" did in deed air, and two unlucky guys were sent packing at the end of it. Tonight's episode kicked off with the introduction to the headliner of the show Kristy Katzmann. What we gathered from it is that she's 41 years old and really, really wants to find a father for her future child. It was shown that her physical status is very healthy and much younger than her chronological age. Oh, and we just learned that Kristy was actually on season 11 of ABC's very similar, hit reality show "The Bachelor."...

Kristy Katzmann is 41, divorced and wanting to start a family. But instead of visiting a sperm bank or making an arrangement with a platonic friend, she’s going to spend the next several weeks winnowing down a group of eligible fertile bachelors until she’s chosen the perfect person with whom to make a baby.
Welcome to Labor of Love, which sounds like one of Jack Donnaghy’s made-up TV shows but is an actual reality series that premiered Thursday on Fox.

Reality dating shows have been a guilty pleasure among audiences for decades, but a common critique of the fan-favorite genre is the romanticized (for lack of a better term) idea of dating on national television.
Aside from cameras following contestants looking for love — or fame? — in recent years, dating shows have been scrutinized for their choice in contestants. In a day in age where hit shows give lucrative platforms to reality stars, viewers question whether casts made up of genetically-blessed twenty-somethings are searching for a soulmate or a social media sponsorship deal.
With “Labor of Love,” Fox is hoping to avoid unrealistic dating show tropes by casting the most mature set of contestants in recent broadcast history with a 41-year-old established lead, Kristy Katzmann, and a group of male suitors ranging from the age of 36 to 46.

If the star of Fox's new reality show Labor of Love looks familiar, there's a good reason for it. Kristy Katzmann, the 41-year-old woman at the center of the show, was actually on The Bachelor several years ago. Do you remember which season she was on?
Kristy first appeared on our screens way back in 2007, when she competed for Brad Womack's heart on season 11 of The Bachelor. She was 29 years old at the time and listed her occupation as "acupuncturist." On that season, she ended up making it to week five before being eliminated. Of course, Brad's season went down in Bachelor history in the weeks following her elimination: he became the first Bachelor ever to break up with both of his final two women instead of pursuing a post-show relationship with either one. He then became the first series lead to come back for a second season,...

Former “Bachelor” contestant Kristy Katzmann begins her new reality-dating-series journey Thursday on Fox’s “Labor of Love,” a show that follows the 41-year-old as she auditions 15 potential suitors who are hoping to be the man of her dreams and the father of her future children.
The premise for the new series — which, as Fox puts it “levels up dating to mating” — required the executive producers to work within some more narrow parameters during the casting process, not just seeking out partners who would be good husbands (or good reality TV stars), but those who would be good parents too.
Though “good” here was first and foremost defined by Kristy.

Netflix has begun to make itself known more aggressively as a player in the world of unscripted TV, dropping the cheaply-made and goofily tawdry “The Circle,” “Love Is Blind,” and “Too Hot to Handle” all since the year began. Now, the streamer encroaches on — and threatens to do better than — networks with less agility, and perhaps just a bit more shame.
It’s comforting, then, that Fox — the originator of pure and uncut reality-tv spectacle some twenty years ago — still has some fight left. Following in the footsteps of “Temptation Island,” “Mr. Personality,” and “Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire?” comes “Labor of Love,” a show whose relationship to its premise is less urgent than its desire to provide humorous uplift in the form of vicarious embarrassment. No pleasure is truly guilty, but this may come close; that it’s a pleasure all the same, though, is all an entertainment-starved viewer may need to hear.

With the traditional broadcast TV season coming to a premature end for many shows due to pandemic-forced production shutdowns, viewers might be thinking that Fox, ABC, CBS, NBC and The CW will be completely out of fresh programming by the end of May. While you may be right to assume these networks will air more reruns this summer that usual, they will also bring you some new content in June, July and August.
Before productions were halted and delayed across the country, filming wrapped on several TV series — both scripted and unscripted — that will be filling broadcast’s primetime slots between encores this summer. There’s also a few shows that networks had in the can before shutdowns that will be held until the fall, which we’ve noted below.

With the release of “Split,” M. Night Shyamalan saw his best reviews since the 1999 breakout “The Sixth Sense.” As the surprise sequel to 2000’s “Unbreakable,” the 2016 “Split” won over many critics who had become skeptical of his bumpy filmography. But when he completed his trilogy with the January 2109 release of “Glass,” Shyamalan found himself in a familiar place.
“I was in London when I heard the U.S. reviews for ‘Glass’ were poor,” Shyamalan told the NYU’s Stern School of Business, where he delivered the 2019 Ashok C. Sani Distinguished Scholar-in-Residence lecture April 16. “I was in a makeup chair for a TV show, and I cried.”
While “Glass” made nearly $250 million worldwide, it landed the director some of his worst reviews (Rotten Tomatoes: 37%). The filmmaker has always been sensitive to criticism, but he also shared his ability to contend with the backlash, and offered advice for uncertain film students in the room.

In a fitting manner, M. Night Shyamalan's path to notoriety was full of unexpected twists. With this month’s release of Glass, we take a look at the early years of this contentious filmmaker.
M. Night Shyamalan is a popular filmmaker who has gained notoriety for his supernatural thrillers and the manner in which his films often end with a shocking twist. His breakthrough was the 1999 Bruce Willis-starring thriller, The Sixth Sense. That film seemingly came out of nowhere and impressed both audiences and critics with its wit and the performances of its two lead actors. The film would go on to gross more than a billion dollars at the box office (adjusted for 2019), and would give his career a huge momentum boost which would continue over the course of his next few films, which included Unbreakable, Signs, and The Village. Both The Sixth Sense and The Village would receive Academy Award nominations,...

There had been a lot of speculation since Disney’s acquisition of Fox assets was announced last December that the soon-to-be-independent Fox broadcast network, aka “New Fox”, will rely heavily on reality, along with live and sports programming.
While at TCA last week, Fox TV Group chairman Dana Walden stressed that while “we are definitely in the development business, and the mix of programming will remain as it was the past decade,” there has been a ramp-up in the network’s reality portfolio. In an interview with Deadline, the network’s President of Alternative Entertainment Rob Wade talks about the expansion, which started when he joined the network in early 2017. He addresses the fate of the network’s summer series The Four,...

Now that Square Enix’s Nintendo Switch exclusive role-playing game “Octopath Traveler” is on store shelves, the developers are talking about some of the inspirations and challenges involved in its creation in a note on the Nintendo website.

Apple’s scripted television endeavour will soon include a thriller series from the mind of M. Night Shyamalan...
M. Night Shyamalan may have just endured the official cancellation of his secretly-post-apocalyptic Fox television series, Wayward Pines, but he certainly didn’t have to wait long for his television hopes to rebound. Shyamalan’s deal with Apple has yielded a 10-episode straight-to-series order for the television project, teaming him with writer and executive producer Tony Basgallop, of Berlin Station, 24: Legacy, 24: Live Another Day and What Remains fame, to create a mystery series, described vaguely as a “psychological thriller.” Interestingly enough, Shyamalan’s thriller project will definitely distinguish itself in terms of format, since – contrary to genre convention – it will manifest as a half-hour series,...

Looking to shrug off the failure of After Earth, M. Night Shyamalan has been throwing himself into work, overseeing a new TV drama (Wayward Pines) and not one but two new films: Labor Of Love and a mysterious new creepy pic, Sundowning.
