Surprisingly, this is one of Mikels's better movies
Leofwine_draca17 October 2016
I have to confess that this, the third in a series of films about the zombie menace, is my first ASTRO ZOMBIES film; I've not yet seen the original 1960s movie or indeed the first straight-to-video sequel. By this time of M3 - CLONED, we're in the territory of amateur film-making here, with joke shop effects and absolutely horrible CGI effects which render the whole thing messy and laughable.

However, it says something about the recent career of cult director Ted V. Mikels that this is one of the better films of his I've seen. Sure, there's a lot of boring jawing and terrible acting to sit through, but the scenes of the machete-wielding alien zombies going around hacking innocents to death make for cheesy fun. The rawness of the awful effects work is somehow endearing too, and for the first time watching a Mikels movie, I wasn't bored. Watch out for references to THE CORPSE GRINDERS and THE DOLL SQUAD, random flashback footage to the previous films in the series, and Tura Satana cameoing.

PG- style, good natured sci-fi fun

Warning: Spoilers
I suppose it's not every day that you get to sit behind a prolific director the first time you ever watch one of his films. "Astro Zombies M3: Cloned" was my first experience with the direction of Ted V. Mikels. Before the movie started he turned around and told me I looked familiar. Then he spoke of his children and 25 grandchildren. I'm sure he was thinking of them with the spirit of this film. It took me back to the days when I was young watching sci-fi with my dad on a Saturday morning.

There was a lot of humor used in "Astro Zombies M3: Cloned," but by far the most fun was the exploding zombies that burst into a cheesy C.G.I. ball of flames upon impact with a blow dart. I was surprised to see the plastic my first microscope and hardware that looked more like something out of Radio Shack, than a cloning lab, but since cloning produces a fetus, maybe this could be a more high tech cloning process producing full size Astro zombies. I couldn't reason around it, so I just had to laugh. There were enough ridiculous moments during the film that I ended up laughing a lot, especially with regard to the crazy bad effects. It reminded me of the skeletons in "Army of Darkness" where you could see the strings holding them together. It was entirely intentional. Although I'm not sure that the biological hazard team member who was obviously reading off a cue card was meant to be funny necessarily (even though it was.)

The director, Mikels, played twins in the film, one a general and another a drunk hippie. The peace loving twin commits suicide with cyanide and the effect was that he began smokingÂ…much like Morticia does in the Adams Family when she says "mind if I smoke?" I think that's the tone of the whole flick, just goofy, lighthearted and fun, which could also explain the two dimensional cartoony characters. The film itself was grainy and made almost to feel like 70's exploitation meets sci-fi meets James Bond in some sort of torrid three way.

There were points when a bit of editing would have done wonders for length, but for the most part there was momentum and a decent pace. The film does show slightly more female empowerment with The Doll Squad's emergence to kick some Astro zombie butt than the entirely weak slappity snap of "Sucker Punch." There was no nudity, swearing, sexual situations, and very little gore. My guess is that Mikels made this for his grandkids and kudos to him if true. It is good to know a whole new generation can watch some fun sci-fi like this too.

Who in 1969 Would Have Imagined a Trilogy of Astro-Zombies?

Astro-Zombies: M3 Cloned (2010)

* (out of 4)

Eight years after MARK OF THE ASTRO-ZOMBIES, Mikels is back with the third film in the series. This time out the government is working at Area 51 and want to bring the astro-zombies back to life to use in war. One scientist thinks the zombies should be taught good things but sadly the evil wins out and soon the creatures escape the lab and start killing. Yes, they have their machetes. At over 80-years-old you can't help but tip your cap to Mikels for staying in the business for so long and still cranking out movies. With that said, he certainly should have gotten a better story on hand because what we get here is incredibly painful to sit through and especially at 104-minutes. I have no idea why on Earth anyone decided to have a "Z" grade, shot on digital video flick run this long as it pretty much kills everything fun that can be found here. There's no question that the astro-zombies are still goofy fun in their own way and seeing them running around in groups is rather campy and fun. Seeing their violent murder scenes is another plus as the machetes go through just about every body part you can think of with plenty of red stuff to follow. That is fun but sadly this doesn't happen until nearly the 80-minute mark and everything that comes before this is just downright boring. Everything dealing with the scientist and her boyfriend is boring. Even more lame is everything trying to connect this film to the earlier movies and we even get a brief appearance of the fake head of John Carradine that showed up in the previous movie. The film goes through all sorts of long dialogue sequences and there isn't a single one that is interesting or entertaining. When people watch stuff like this they want exploitation and not just long dialogue talking about everything under the son. None of the performances are anything to write home about but we do get brief bits by Mikels himself as well as Tura Satana and Shanti. The film has a few clever touches including some of the canned cat food previously seen in THE CORPSE GRINDERS. Also on hand are a new group of Doll Squad members who get to kick the astro-zombies around but again this happens way too late. ASTRO-ZOMBIES: M3 CLONED is another really bad movie in a really, really bad series and is only for those who must watch anything they can.
