- [the group starts to cover Glenn with the Walker guts]
- Glenn: [Glenn groans] Oh God! Oh jeez. Oh, this is bad. This is really bad.
- Rick Grimes: Think about something else... Puppies and kittens.
- T-Dog: Dead puppies and kittens.
- Andrea: [when Glenn vomits] That is just evil. What is wrong with you?
- Jacqui: [Jacqui looks over to T-Dog, about Rick] Next time let the cracker beat his ass.
- [Glenn saves Rick's life from the surrounding Walkers on the street]
- Glenn: Nice moves there, Clint Eastwood. You the new sheriff come riding in to clean up the town?
- Rick Grimes: It wasn't my intention.
- Glenn: Yeah, whatever. Yeehaw. You're still a dumbass.
- [T-Dog tries reaching somebody over the C.B. radio]
- T-Dog: Anybody out there? Hello? Anybody read? I'm hoping to hear somebody's voice 'cause I'm getting sick and tired of hearing mine.
- Merle Dixon: Yeah, well, that makes two of us. Why don't you knock that crap off? You're giving me a headache, boy.
- T-Dog: Why don't you pull your head out of your ass? Maybe your headache will go away.
- T-Dog: [Merle chuckles] Try some positivity for a change. Damn.
- [Rick tells Merle the rules of the new world]
- Rick Grimes: Look here, Merle. Things are different now. There are no niggers anymore. No dumb-ass-shit, inbred white-trash fools either. Only dark meat and white meat. There's us and the dead. We survive this by pulling together, not apart.
- [over the walkie-talkie, Glenn tells Rick the bad news]
- Glenn: [on the walkie-talkie] Hey, are you alive in there?
- Rick Grimes: Hello? Hello?
- Glenn: [on the walkie-talkie] There you are. You had me wondering.
- Rick Grimes: Where are you? Outside? Can you see me right now?
- Glenn: [on the walkie-talkie] Yeah, I can see you. You're surrounded by walkers. That's the bad news.
- Rick Grimes: There's good news?
- Glenn: [on the walkie-talkie] No.
- [Rick tells the group his plan to cover themselves in Walker guts]
- Glenn: If bad ideas were an Olympic event, this would take the gold.
- [over the walkie-talkie, Glenn tells Rick that he needs to make a run for it from the tank]
- Rick Grimes: Listen, whoever you are, I don't mind telling you I'm a little concerned in here.
- Glenn: [on the walkie-talkie] Oh man. You should see it from over here. You'd be having a major freak-out.
- Rick Grimes: Got any advice for me?
- Glenn: [on the walkie-talkie] Yeah, I'd say make a run for it.
- Rick Grimes: That's it? 'Make a run for it?
- Glenn: [on the walkie-talkie] My way's not as dumb as it sounds.
- [Rick asks Morales for the axe back]
- Rick Grimes: Give me the axe. We need... We need more guts.
- [as Rick chops down at the Walker's body again]
- [Shane wrestles Lori down to the ground in the woods]
- Lori Grimes: You scared the hell out of me.
- Shane Walsh: [Shane chuckles] I bet. That's what you get for keeping me waiting.
- [Rick meets Andrea for the first time as she tells him that he just killed all of them]
- Andrea: [Andrea holds her gun at Rick] We're dead because of this stupid asshole.
- Morales: Andrea, I said back the hell off. Well, pull the trigger.
- Andrea: [Andrea lowers her gun] We're dead... All of us... Because of you.
- Rick Grimes: I don't understand.
- Morales: Look, we came into the city to scavenge supplies. You know what the key to scavenging is? Surviving! You know the key to surviving? Sneaking in and out, tiptoeing. Not shooting up the streets like it's the O.K. Corral.
- T-Dog: Every geek for miles around heard you popping off rounds.
- Andrea: [Rick sees the Walkers outside the building first floor] You just rang the dinner bell.
- [T-Dog and Merle fight over who's boss in their little group]
- T-Dog: You're bringing even more of them down on our ass! Man, just chill.
- Merle Dixon: Hey! Bad enough I've got this taco-bender on my ass all day. Now I'm gonna take orders from you? I don't think so, bro. That'll be the day.
- T-Dog: 'That'll be the day'? You got something you wanna tell me?
- Morales: Hey, T-Dog man, just leave it.
- T-Dog: No.
- Morales: All right? It ain't worth it. Now Merle, just relax, okay? We've got enough trouble.
- Merle Dixon: [Merle looks to T-Dog] You want to know the day?
- T-Dog: Yeah.
- Merle Dixon: I'll tell you the day, Mr. 'Yo.' It's the day I take orders from a nigger.
- T-Dog: [as T-Dog charges Merle] Mother...
- [Merle threatens the group on who gives the orders]
- Merle Dixon: [Merle holds his gun on T-Dog] Yeah! All right! We're gonna have ourselves a little powwow, huh? Talk about who's in charge. I vote me. Anybody else? Huh? Democracy time, y'all. Show of hands, huh? All in favor? Huh? Come on. Let's see 'em. Oh, come on. All in favor?
- Merle Dixon: [the group reluctantly raise their hands] Yeah. That's good. Now that means I'm the boss, right? Yeah. Anybody else? Hmm? Anybody?
- Rick Grimes: Yeah.
- [when Rick punches Merle to the ground]
- [Rick cuffs Merle to the rooftop while introducing himself]
- Merle Dixon: Who the hell are you, man?
- Rick Grimes: Officer friendly.
- [Rick holds his gun to Merle's head on the rooftop]
- Merle Dixon: You wouldn't. You're a cop.
- Rick Grimes: All I am anymore is a man looking for his wife and son. Anybody that gets in the way of that is gonna lose.
- [Merle asks for Andrea to uncuff him so that they could leave to together alone]
- Rick Grimes: It's up to us to find a way out.
- Merle Dixon: Good luck with that. These streets ain't safe in this part of town from what I hear.
- Merle Dixon: [Merle looks to Andrea] Ain't that right, sugar tits? Hey, honeybunch, what say you get me out of these cuffs, we go off somewhere and bump some uglies? Gonna die anyway.
- Andrea: I'd rather.
- Merle Dixon: Rub muncher. I figured as much.
- Morales: The streets ain't safe. Now there's an understatement.
- [Glenn devises a plan to go into the sewers for the group]
- Glenn: Look, until now I always came here by myself... In and out, grab a few things... No problem. The first time I bring a group... Everything goes to hell. No offense. If you want me to go down this gnarly hole, fine... But only if we do it my way. It's tight down there. If I run into something and have to get out quick, I don't want you all jammed up behind me getting me killed. I'll take one person...
- Glenn: [Rick steps forward] Not you either. You've got Merle's gun and I've seen you shoot. I'd feel better if you were out in that store watching those doors, covering our ass. And you've got the only other gun, so you should go with him.
- Glenn: [Glenn points to Morales] You be my wingman. Jacqui stays here. Something happens, yell down to us, get us back up here in a hurry.
- Jacqui: Okay.
- Rick Grimes: Okay, everybody knows their jobs.
- [Andrea apologizes for putting a gun into Rick's face]
- Andrea: Sorry for the gun in your face.
- Rick Grimes: People do things when they're afraid.
- Andrea: Not that it was entirely unjustified. You did get us into this.
- Andrea: If I get us out, would that make up for it?
- Andrea: No, but it'd be a start.
- Rick Grimes: Next time though, take the safety off. It won't shoot otherwise.
- Andrea: [Andrea looks down to her gun] Oh.
- [Merle asks for T-Dog to give him the hacksaw out of their bag]
- Merle Dixon: I'll tell you what... You get me out of these cuffs and I'll be all 'Sammy Sunshine' positive for you. Hey, see that hacksaw over there in that tool bag? Get it for me, hmm? Make it worth your while. What do you say, man? Come on. Get me out of these things.
- T-Dog: [Merle jiggles the cuffs around his wrist] So you can beat my ass again? Or call me nigger some more?
- Merle Dixon: Come on now. It wasn't personal. It's just that your kind and my kind ain't meant to mix. That's all. It don't mean we can't... Work together, parley, as long as there's some kind of mutual gain involved. So... About that hacksaw...
- T-Dog: I guess you want me to get that rifle over there, too, so you can shoot that cop when he comes back up, huh?
- Merle Dixon: [when Merle smiles] Huh.
- [Rick learns that the Walkers can tell who they are by smell]
- Rick Grimes: They're drawn by sound, right?
- Glenn: Right, like dogs. They hear a sound, they come.
- Rick Grimes: What else?
- Morales: Aside from they hear you? They see you, smell you and if they catch you, they eat you.
- Rick Grimes: They can tell us by smell?
- Glenn: Can't you?
- Andrea: They smell dead, we don't. It's pretty distinct.
- [Rick reads the I.D. card of the dead Walker they drag in for guts]
- Rick Grimes: Wayne Dunlap. Georgia license. Born in 1979. He had $28 in his pocket when he died... And a picture of a pretty girl. 'With love, from Rachel.' He used to be like us... Worrying about bills or the rent or the Super Bowl. If I ever find my family, I'm gonna tell them about Wayne.
- Glenn: One more thing... He was an organ donor.
- [as the group remains silent]
- [Andrea's group watches Rick and Glenn from the rooftop, as they drive off in the truck]
- Andrea: They're leaving us.
- Merle Dixon: [Merle from behind] What? What?
- Morales: Where they going? Where they going?
- Andrea: No, no, come back.
- [Rick and Glenn devise a plan while driving around in the truck]
- Glenn: [Glenn nervously shakes] Oh my God. Oh my God. They're all over that place.
- Rick Grimes: You need to draw them away. Those roll-up doors at the front of the store... That area? That's what I need cleared. Raise your friends. Tell them to get down there and be ready.
- Glenn: And I'm drawing the geeks away how? I... I missed that part.
- Rick Grimes: Noise.
- [Merle tries begging the group to not leave him behind]
- Merle Dixon: [the group moves to run down the stairway] Hey, that's my gun. You can't leave me. Don't leave me here, you guys.
- Andrea: Morales, come on.
- Morales: I'm coming! We've gotta go!
- Merle Dixon: [as T-Dog hesitates] Morales! You can't leave me like this, man! Hey, T-Dog. No, man. You can't leave me, man. You can't leave me here... Not like this. You can't, man. It's not human. Come on, don't do this.
- [first lines]
- Lori Grimes: [Amy brings Lori back some berries from the woods] Any luck?
- Amy Harrison: How do we tell if they're poison?
- Lori Grimes: Uh, there's only one sure way I know of.
- Amy Harrison: Ask Shane when he gets back?
- Lori Grimes: Yeah, you've got it.
- [Lori tells Dale and Carl that she's going into the woods]
- Lori Grimes: Dale, I'm heading out.
- Lori Grimes: [Lori looks to Carl] Sweetheart, I want you to stay where Dale can see you, okay?
- Carl Grimes: Yes, mom.
- Dale Horvath: [Dale shouts down to Lori from the RV] You too. Don't wander too far. Stay within shouting distance. And if you see anything, holler. I'll come running.
- Lori Grimes: Yes, mom.
- [Rick meets Glenn for the first time]
- Rick Grimes: Rick. Thanks.
- Glenn: [Glenn shakes Rick's hand] Glenn. You're welcome.
- [Rick and Glenn prepare to climb the building ladder with Walkers below them]
- Glenn: The bright side: It'll be the fall that kills us. I'm a glass-half-full kind of guy.
- [as the two start climbing up together]
- [Rick asks Glenn why did he save his life back at the tank]
- Rick Grimes: Back at the tank, why'd you stick your neck out for me?
- Glenn: Call it foolish, naive hope that if I'm ever that far up shit creek, somebody might do the same for me. Guess I'm an even bigger dumbass than you.
- [Rick asks the group what about the refugee center]
- Morales: Hey, T-Dog, try that C.B. Can you contact the others?
- Rick Grimes: Others? The refugee center?
- Jacqui: [Jacqui sarcastically responds] Yeah, the refugee center. They've got biscuits waiting at the oven for us.
- [T-Dog tries stopping Merle from shooting his rifle in the city]
- T-Dog: Hey, Dixon, are you crazy?
- Andrea: Oh jeez.
- Merle Dixon: [Merle chuckles] Hey! You oughta be more polite to a man with a gun! Huh? Ah! Only common sense.
- [Rick tells Merle it's common sense to be polite to a man with a gun]
- Merle Dixon: Screw you, man.
- Rick Grimes: I can see you make a habit of missing the point.
- Merle Dixon: Yeah? Well, screw you twice.
- Rick Grimes: Ought to be polite to a man with a gun.
- Rick Grimes: [Rick cocks his gun] Only common sense.
- [Rick sees the drugs on Merle's nose]
- Rick Grimes: Got some on your nose there.
- Merle Dixon: What are you gonna do? Arrest me?
- Merle Dixon: [Merle laughs, as Rick throws Merle's drugs over the edge] Hey! What are you doing? Man, that was my stuff! Hey! If I get loose, you'd better pray... Yeah, you hear me, you pig! You hear me?
- Rick Grimes: [Rick walks away from the cuffed Merle] Yeah, your voice carries.
- [Morales welcomes Rick to Atlanta as they both look on from the rooftop]
- Morales: You're not Atlanta P.D. Where you from?
- Rick Grimes: Up the road a ways.
- Morales: Well, officer Friendly from up the road a ways, welcome to the big city.
- [Glenn shows the group the ladder that goes down into the black sewers]
- Morales: This is it? Are you sure?
- Glenn: I really scoped this place out the other times I was here. It's the only thing in the building that goes down. But I've never gone down it. Who'd want to, right?
- Glenn: [as the group silently looks at Glenn] Oh... great.
- [Rick teaches Andrea how the safety works on her handgun]
- Rick Grimes: Is that your gun?
- Andrea: It was a gift. Why?
- Rick Grimes: Little red dot means it's ready to fire. You may have occasion to use it.
- Andrea: Good to know.
- [Rick tells Andrea to take a necklace from the department building they're in]
- Rick Grimes: See something you like?
- Andrea: Not me, but I know someone who would... My sister. She's still such a kid in some ways. Unicorns, dragons... She's into all that stuff. But mermaids... They rule. She loves mermaids.
- Rick Grimes: [Rick in a low voice] Why not take it?
- Andrea: [Andrea in a low voice] There's a cop staring at me.
- Andrea: [Rick chuckles] Would it be considered looting?
- Rick Grimes: [Rick smiles] I don't think those rules apply anymore. Do you?
- [Andrea smiles as she takes the necklace]
- [Rick tries to come up with a diversion to not be recognized by the Walkers]
- Rick Grimes: That construction site, those trucks... They always keep keys on hand.
- Morales: You'll never make it past the Walkers.
- Rick Grimes: [Rick looks to Glenn] You got me out of that tank.
- Glenn: Yeah, but they were feeding. They were distracted.
- Rick Grimes: Can we distract them again?
- Merle Dixon: Right. Listen to him. He's onto something. A diversion, like on 'Hogan's Heroes.'
- [Glenn says he's going to hurl as the Walker guts cover him]
- Glenn: Oh God.
- Rick Grimes: [Rick hands the axe to Morales] Keep chopping.
- Glenn: [Glenn groans] I am so gonna hurl.
- Rick Grimes: Later.
- [Rick and Glenn cover themselves in Walker guts]
- Glenn: [to Rick] You suck.
- Rick Grimes: Do we smell like them?
- Andrea: Oh yeah.
- Andrea: [Andrea hands Glenn his gun] Glenn. Just in case.
- [the group from the rooftop watch Rick and Glenn walk along the street of Walkers, covered in guts]
- Merle Dixon: That asshole is out on the street with the handcuff keys?
- [as T-Dog holds the key up from his pocket]
- [Dale and Jim see that they need a replacement hose for the RV]
- Dale Horvath: Boy, that hose isn't long for this world, is it?
- Jim: No sir.
- Dale Horvath: Where the hell are we gonna find a replacement?
- [Shane tells Amy that they can't go after Andrea's group]
- Shane Walsh: No way. We do not go after them. We do not risk the rest of the group. Y'all know that.
- Amy Harrison: So we're just gonna leave her there?
- Shane Walsh: Look, Amy, I know that this is not easy...
- Amy Harrison: She volunteered to go to help the rest of us.
- Shane Walsh: I know, and she knew the risks, right? See, if she's trapped, she's gone. So we just have to deal with that. There's nothing we can do.
- Amy Harrison: She's my sister, you son of a bitch.
- [Glenn and Rick covered in guts slowly make their way through the crowded Walkers]
- Glenn: [Glenn whispers to Rick] It's gonna work. I can't believe it.
- Rick Grimes: [Rick whispers back] Don't... Draw... Attention.
- [as Glenn starts to moan like a Walker]
- [the crowd of Walkers start to stare closer at Glenn and Rick in the rain]
- Glenn: The smell's washing off. Isn't it? Is it washing off?
- Rick Grimes: [Rick in a low voice] No, it's not.
- Rick Grimes: [as a Walker stares into Rick's face] Well, maybe.
- [Merle yells at T-Dog as he loses the key for his handcuffs]
- Merle Dixon: Son of a bitch! You did that on purpose!
- T-Dog: I didn't mean to!
- Merle Dixon: You lie! You did it on purpose!
- T-Dog: It was an accident!
- Merle Dixon: Don't leave me, man! Don't leave me! Don't leave me! You liar!
- T-Dog: [as Merle starts kicking the pipe he's tied to] I'm sorry. Man, I'm sorry.
- Merle Dixon: Don't leave me!
- T-Dog: I'm sorry.
- Merle Dixon: [as T-Dog leaves the rooftop Merle screams] Damn you all! Don't leave me, man! Don't leave... don't leave me!
- [Merle screams all by himself on the rooftop as the group leaves the city]
- Merle Dixon: Don't leave me! You'll die! Go to hell! Damn you! You're gonna rot in hell!
- [Merle yells]
