Not entirely convinced by the new cast yet
kohldayvhis19 January 2023
The pilot of the sequel series to that 70's show is at it's strongest when the original cast is on the screen. It really reminds you that one of the reasons the original series was such a hit was because of the incredible casting & chemistry.

There are some really nice nods to the original series in this first episode as well that you will catch if you've ever rewatched that 70's show.

My only concern is that the new characters weren't very fun to watch so far. I found a lot of their lines / jokes a little cheap and I really didn't like how they made Ozzie nothing more than the stereotypical "sassy" gay cliche. Hoping they get stronger as the series goes on.

Reunited with the original gang!

I gotta say I was surprised by the pilot episode of this new series! I really enjoyed seeing Topher reprise his role as Eric Forman. I felt like we never got the proper send off in the 70s finale with Eric. Also seeing Laura Prepon, Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis was definitely icing on the cake. You gotta love when you see long time friends like this! And I gotta say it's been along time!! Cant wait to see most of the original cast in the coming season. I enjoyed this episode and had a blast. I already saw the second episode and believe that this show will have alot of laughs with this new gang of characters!!!

Red still rules

About the only laughs from this episode were delivered by Red. I loved "That 70s Show", but so far this hasn't captured that magic. The really did just copy the characters, but none of the kids have the zang of their predecessors. I enjoyed the cameos by the original kids. I have to keep watching because the "this season on That 90s Show" clips look quite good, hopefully the actual season lives up to the hype and it's not a case of all the best stuff is in the trailer. So far this does seem to at least be better than "That 80s Show", not that I watched much of that one. Ok at this point I'm just trying to pad the size of this review so it is long enough to post.

Good start for the sequel

Warning: Spoilers
Huge fan of that 70's show here Watching this because of how much I loved That 70's Show. The first episode was pretty good. I think some of the kids acting was cringe but it doesn't mean it's bad. If you compare it to the first season of the original show it is similar.

The actors will get better as time goes on for sure. If you are watching as a fan you will totally enjoy it. I didn't laugh at every joke but I did laugh and smile quite a bit during this episode. So you can say I enjoyed it.

Spoilers: I think Eric is a good dad and his daughter Leia is just like him. She is nerdy and she was casted perfectly.

I also love all the star wars references.

It's good to be back!

For context, I LOVED That 70s Show. I watched reruns every day after school. It was hilarious, extremely well cast and acted. You could feel the chemistry in just about every episode. The pilot for that series was pretty solid from what I remember too.

That being said, I have to agree with the others saying that the original cast may have saved this premiere from being super uninteresting? I thought all of the appearances from them were super fun. Seeing Eric and Donna as a married couple, and as parents, was actually great. Eric saying Red's iconic line from the original show was amazingly delivered!

So, the new characters? The main characters? They're just kind of okay so far. I've seen the first three episodes as I write this. I will say that I do genuinely like Leia. She feels a lot like Eric did in That 70s Show, but with just enough charm to be her own character as well. I may honestly keep watching it for her, and maybe for Kelso's son as well. Gwen may grow on me as well. I haven't grown to like any of the others yet. Hopefully that changes as the season goes on.

I'm glad Kitty and Red are here for the whole show. They're as great as they were in That 70s Show.

I will say that this DOES look and feel JUST like That 70s Show. You can tell original writers and producers are working on this.

I'm kind of impressed. Not amazed, but surprised nonetheless. Will definitely finish this season some time this year.

Fingers crossed

That 70's show was a great show and a television juggernaut. I loved watching it as a teenager when it was on TV. There was honestly nothing else like that on TV and it was unique and hilarious.

It is always a tough task to do a sequel to a popular show. That 90s show will have a very hard act to follow. The first episode was promising and not too bad. It landed smoothly thanks to the original cast making an appearance. We had Eric, Donna, Kelso and Jackie star in the episode and we will have Kitty and Red as recurring characters which will be nice. Having these beloved cast members helped carry the pilot but will it continue to be smooth once the new cast take over? I hope there is some promise, so fingers crossed.

Only saved by the original cast members
Lmsmonroe23 January 2023
It was okay up until they introduced the rest of the gang. The "kids" overacting kept me from enjoying anything about the show. The only reason this episode even got 5 stars at all is because of Red and Kitty and the cameo of Eric, Donna, Kelso, and Jackie. Of the 4 aforementioned, only Donna will make a reappearance.

It appears as though there will be cameos of Fez, Bob and Leo as well, but I'm not sure it's worth continuing to watch if I'm just waiting for snippets of the old cast. Might as well go back and watch the original That 70's Show, which is exactly what my teen and I ended up doing. Be careful though, beginning a re-watch of That 70's Show will only further contrast the disappointment of the new with the greatness and nostalgia of the old.

TL;DR - Pilot relies heavily on characters we already know and love in an attempt to trick us into feeling connected to the uninteresting new "gang"
