How do Hollywood creators forge massive universes for their characters? For Ronald D. Moore, executive producer of “For All Mankind” and “Outlander,” it all began with the question: What if the Russians landed on the moon first? From this starting point, “For All Mankind” was born. Moore and his team explored their alternate timeline, weaving cultural, societal, and political shifts with historical events, crafting a rich universe for the Apple+ TV series.
Diving deeper into the intricacies of world-building for Variety’s Sony FYC Showcase, Moore was joined on the “Building a Television Universe” panel by “For All Mankind” co-showrunners and exec producers Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi, as well as Maril Davis, who serves as an exec producer on both “For All Mankind” and “Outlander.” Also on the panel: “Justified: City Primeval” co-showrunners and exec producers Michael Dinner and Dave Andron, as well as Sony Pictures TV drama development exec VP Andrew Plotkin.

The latest round of Outlander spinoff casting includes an Easter Egg for a subset of the book-loyal fandom.
Starz on Wednesday announced the addition of four roles to the forthcoming prequel, Blood of My Blood. Among them: Watchmen‘s Sara Vickers in the part of Brian Fraser’s mother (and, therefore, Jamie Fraser’s grandmother). The character is a housekeeper in the Lovat household, which is good and all, but we’re super into how she’s also named after someone many devotees of author Diana Gabaldon will recognize: Davina Porter, who narrates the audiobook versions of Gabaldon’s Outlander book series.

Outlander: Blood of My Blood filming is officially underway in Scotland and with it comes the love stories of Claire’s (Caitriona Balfe) parents and Jamie’s (Sam Heughan) parents. Chronicling the romances set in World War I England and the 18th-century Scottish Highlands, the show will explore two very different time periods, which eventually come crashing together with the help of Claire’s time-traveling abilities when she takes a fateful trip to Inverness. While the original television series is based on Diana Gabaldon‘s books, some fans may wonder how this spinoff will live up the franchise. (Credit: Theo Wargo/Getty Images for Starz) Well, Gabaldon put minds at ease when we spoke to the author in April 2023 for Outlander‘s Deluxe Collector’s Edition Issue as she revealed her own involvement in the prequel spinoff. “I will be writing a script for the prequel and also one for...

Outlander‘s upcoming spinoff Outlander: Blood of My Blood has already begun casting some familiar characters, which poses a big question: Will the new series include Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan)? In a universe that involves time travel, it seems like the door could certainly be open to the possibility, but considering this will be an original story not previously shared by author Diana Gabaldon, there’s no source material to reference for such Easter eggs. Blood of My Blood will chronicle the love stories between Claire’s parents Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield) and Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine) in World War I England as well as Jamie’s parents Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater) and Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy) in the 18th-century Scottish Highlands. He’s back in the U.K. now to promote Mary & George, premiering April 5 on Starz, but will soon return to set to continue filming the spinoff. The 10-episode series is based on Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire’s (Caitríona Balfe) parents and, as Curran reveals to us, will specifically take place in 1714 and 1914. Exclusive: On the heels of his newest feature Radical‘s Festival Favorite Award win at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, filmmaker Christopher Zalla has inked with Entertainment 360 for management.
Zalla wrote and directed the critically acclaimed drama, based on a 2013 article written for Wired magazine by Josh Davis, which was among the most discussed titles at Sundance 2023. The film is based on the true story of Sergio Juarez Correa (Coda‘s Eugenio Derbez), a teacher in the neglected town of Matamoros, Mexico, who as Zalla notes in his director’s statement, suffered “a mental breakdown” after “increasingly failing to reach his students in each successive year.” When Correa stumbled upon “a new kind of child-directed learning” in a Ted Talk, he decided to try to implement it, in order to turn the situation in his classroom around, to profound results.

The final season of “Outlander” is almost here and the cast are placing their bets on how it all ends.
The show’s leads, Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan, are just hoping for a happy ending for their tragic couple.
“I don’t know, but I would like to see them happy at the end,” Balfe told Et Canada’s Keisha Chante when asked to predict the ending of the show. “You know, I would like to see them just sitting on a porch, being able to put their feet up, have a nice cup of tea.”
While they hoped for greener pastures for their characters, some of the other cast members had more extreme predictions.

Droughtlander isn't over just yet, sassenachs. Though Starz's "Outlander" is ending after its eighth season, there's still plenty to look forward to now that season seven has not one, but two premiere dates.

That time around, it was Jamie envisioning the future - which could be a warning of what's to come for him and Claire. In the teaser, Jamie tells Claire that he dreamed they were surrounded by an unnatural light. "I had another dream," he says. "There was a light around ye. But it wasn't candlelight, nor firelight. “Outlander” might be gearing up for its end, but everybody’s favorite dashing Highland warrior still has a home at Starz. Sam Heughan, the star of the channel’s smash-hit time-travel series, will star in the thriller series “The Couple Next Door” at the premium cabler.
The show, a co-production between Starz and Britain’s Channel 4, is adapted from the Dutch series “New Neighbours,” and stars Heughan as Danny, an “alpha traffic cop” married to glamorous yoga instructor Becka (Jessica De Gouw of “Pennyworth”). When a new couple moves in next door — Evie (Eleanor Tomlinson of “The Outlaws”) and Pete (Alfred Enoch of “Harry Potter” and “How to Get Away With Murder”) in their high-class suburban neighborhood, the foursome become fast friends, but tensions soon form. Especially when Danny and Evie share a passionate night together.

“Outlander” is giving fans a little more time before they have to say goodbye — and giving subscribers more of a reason to sign up for a full year instead of just a few months. Season 7 of the time-travel romance will air in two parts, Starz said on Wednesday, with the first half airing this year and the second half waiting for 2024.
Season 7, as previously announced, consists of 16 episodes, the show’s highest order count since Season 1. Like Season 1, which aired in 2014 and 2015, Season 7 will be split into two eight-episode bunches — the “Droughtlander” is officially over on June 16. “Outlander” has already been renewed for a final Season 8, which will consist of 10 episodes and presumably air in 2025 or later.
It is currently unclear if the show, based on Diana Gabaldon’s series of historical-fantasy romance novels, will completely adapt the entire saga. Each season of “Outlander” thus far has adapted (roughly) one...

Diana Gabaldon didn’t start writing her first novel until she was in her mid-30s. It was the late 1980s, and at the time she was a professor at Arizona State University. She says she had dreams of writing a novel since she was a little girl, and when she turned 35, she decided it was time to pursue it. Her very first book would eventually become Outlander. But if she would have stuck to her original plan, no one would have ever read it.

The Best Exotic Portugal Hotel: Canijo Examines Motherhood as Misanthropy in Masterful Familial Miasma
The women handling the specialty boutique hotel in Joao Canijo’s Mal Viver (Bad Living) have inadvertently created their own inescapable prison. Like the cursed souls inhabiting the metaphorical hell of The Eagles’ “Hotel California, which eerily asserted “You can check out any time you like/But you can never leave,” three generations of women careen towards self-destructive implosion, predatory insects tangled in a web of their own making.
For fans of Canijo, who often operates in the same vein as Mike Leigh in the lengthy collaborations of his scenarios with the same coterie of performers over the past several decades, it’s a return to the acidity of his best traveled title, 2011’s Blood of My Blood, another agonizing familial epic which is more sensationally perverse.…...

Portuguese auteur Joao Canijo (Blood of My Blood) arrives at the 2023 Berlinale with not just one but two films — a diptych shot in the same hotel location with overlapping characters. Bad Living (Mal Viver) focuses largely on the women who own and run the hotel, while its companion, Living Bad (Viver Mal), centers on some of the hotel’s guests. (Both films unfold within the same time frame.) Full disclosure: I have not seen Living Bad, but given that Bad Living was selected for the festival’s main competition presumably it was deemed to be the stronger work. One can only shudder to imagine what an ordeal Living Bad must be to endure. Punishingly slow, grandiloquently depressing and ultimately not even especially convincing psychologically, Bad Living feels like the work of people who sincerely believed they were making great art. Sadly, they were mistaken.

There are stepping stones to carving out a career as a filmmaker. It frequently involves them creating an idea for a short and perhaps finding collaborators willing to hustle. The first short could reach a small festival. It may get commended. Their next short film reaches a larger festival, with more cache. Bit by bit a reputation is built to a height where, if lucky, they get to develop their first feature.
One such filmmaker who has worked to reach this point is Brazil’s, Rafaela Camelo, selected by Variety as one of 10 Brazilian next gen talents.

Portuguese auteur João Canijo (San Sebastián winner “Blood of My Blood”) has a brace of films at the Berlin Film Festival in 2023. “Bad Living” is in competition while its companion piece “Living Bad” is in the Encounters strand.
“Bad Living” follows five conflicted women who are operating an old family-run hotel, trying to save it from going under. The unexpected arrival of a granddaughter to this oppressive space stirs trouble, reviving latent hatred and piled-up resentments. “Living Bad,” which plays out like the reverse shot of “Bad Living,” follows the stories of three groups of guests in the same hotel with glimpses of what transpires in the first film.

Ed Speleers memorably brought Stephen Bonnet to life, making him one of the Starz drama’s most chilling antagonists. Speleers will next be seen in You Season 4, his first series role since leaving Outlander. TV Insider chatted with Speleers ahead of the You Season 4 Part 1 premiere on February 9, and he shared how he feels about Outlander coming to a close with Season 8. He also sang the praises of the series that he says changed the trajectory of his career. “That’s a lot of Outlander,” he says of the Season 8 renewal. Speleers says the Starz period drama has been a net good for everyone involved. “It’s obviously been a huge part for many actors, many creative ...

Katherine Pope was named President of Sony Pictures Television Studios last summer, 15 years after she previously ran a TV studio, NBC Universal TV Studios (now Universal Television). Broadcast networks were atop of the food chain back then, with vertical integration on the rise. Fifteen years later, broadcast and cable has been upstaged by streaming, with vertical integration still a factor in pickup and renewal decisions.
‘Outlander’
Pope is starting with somewhat of a clean slate as several of the independent TV studio’s longest-running hits announced end dates over the past month, The Blacklist on NBC, Cobra Kai on Netflix and Outlander on Starz. There also has been a momentum amid a challenging quarter for parent company Sony Corp., with a string of good news in January, from the strong launches of The Last Of Us on HBO, which already has been renewed for a second season, and The Accused on Fox,...

It’s great news that Party Down is returning for a new season on Starz — but it’s not so great news that these people are still working as caterers all these years later.
Starz has released a trailer for Season 3 of the sharp-tongued comedy (which you can watch above), and the new footage sheds a bit of light on why Henry and his fellow Hollywood wannabes are still serving appetizers and wearing those pink bow ties more than a decade after we last saw them. (Party Down ended its original two-season run in 2010.)

Outlander actor Graham McTavish has recently spoken out about the possibility of him appearing in the Starz network series, Blood of My Blood.
The actor starred as Dougal MacKenzie in Outlander but was killed off in Season 2 of the hit historical time-traveling drama series.
