Daisy Ridley, known best as Rey in the "Star Wars" sequel trilogy, has had a pretty fascinating career outside of a galaxy far, far away. From narrating documentaries to failed YA sci-fi adaptations, she's certainly spread her wings. Later this year, Ridley will get the chance to lead a straight-up action flick called "Cleaner." It sounds like a riff on "Die Hard" from director Martin Campbell, who directed two of the greatest "James Bond" movies ever made. We may not even have a trailer yet, but it sounds very much like the film is going to live up to the promise of the talent involved.
The actor was on hand at this year's SXSW film festival in Austin, Texas, to promote her new movie "Magpie." During a panel, Ridley got to talking about some of her more physically demanding roles as of late, including the upcoming Disney drama "Young Woman and the Sea.

In the world of buddy cop comedies, the "Rush Hour" franchise remains a standout. The odd coupling of a reserved chief inspector from Hong Kong and a fast-talking LAPD officer sparked three action-packed, hilarious films popular the world over, amassing over $850 million at the global box office.
Across the three films, Chief Inspector Lee (Jackie Chan) and Detective James Carter (Chris Tucker) solve cases in Hong Kong and the U.S., even paying a brief visit to France, typically involving the Triads and government officials. And while the trilogy offers adrenaline-inducing action sequences, it's the comedic chemistry between the two actors that has endured.
When the first installment of "Rush Hour" debuted in 1998, North American audiences had just become acquainted with Chan following the success of "Rumble in the Bronx," while films like "Friday" and "The Fifth Element" highlighted Tucker as an emerging comedic voice. Their natural banter won audiences...

Sony’s Kraven the Hunter movie is headed our way this Halloween season, and this week Sony has unleashed the official trailer for the rated “R” movie set in the Marvel universe.
Kraven the Hunter will be the very first Marvel movie from Sony to be released into theaters with an “R” rating, with lots of bloody violence being promised.
During the recent CinemaCon panel, star Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Avengers: Age of Ultron) referred to the project as “a Marvel movie grounded heavily in the real world.”
“Fuck yeah, it will be rated R,” he promised attendees.
Watch the official Red Band trailer for the Kraven the Hunter movie below, which indeed delivers a level of violence that will most definitely garner the film that “R” rating.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s potential summer sleeper “The Meg 2: Trench” dropped its first teaser trailer, essentially the same mouth-watering footage audiences saw at last month’s CinemaCon presentation.
As noted last month, the trailer’s tagline is “They’re back… for seconds,” mimicking the refreshingly cheeky marketing that helped turn “The Meg” into a surprise super-smash. The trailer opens with two land-bound prehistoric monsters eating a large bug, with onscreen text warning that for 65 million years one species ruled the world. The answer is not the tyrannosaurus rex, but rather a megalodon which is introduced eating a T-rex.
That was actually the prologue of Steve Alton’s first novel which didn’t make it into the first movie. One may recall that “The Lost World: Jurassic Park” and “Jurassic Park III” included setpieces and ideas from Michael Crichton’s “Jurassic Park” novel that didn’t make it into Steven Spielberg’s first dino blockbuster.

Sony’s Kraven the Hunter movie was previewed during Sony’s CinemaCon presentation last night, and one of the most exciting tidbits revealed about the movie is that it’s most definitely rated “R”! Plot: Ride On tells the story of washed-up stuntman Luo (Jackie Chan). When Luo’s trusty horse Red Hare becomes the focus of a debt dispute, Luo repairs his relationship with his estranged daughter Bao (Liu Haocun). Moreover, with the help of Bao’s boyfriend, Mickey (Kevin Guo), the team of “three people and one horse” set out to protect their family and loved ones. The action choreography in the film is a homage to Jackie Chan’s classic stunts from his previous movies.
Review: It’s hard to watch your heroes get old. However, that also happens to be a plot point and one of the themes in the new Jackie Chan action dramedy Ride On. Chan’s recent string of films has been somewhat hit or miss. He proclaimed that his last all-out action film that recaptures the spirit of his heyday was going to be the third...

World-famous martial arts star Jackie Chan is returning to his Hong Kong roots in news that will have any action junkie positively buzzing with excitement. Longtime fans will hardly need a reminder of Chan's leading role in the "Police Story" trilogy of movies. Made with significant creative influence by Chan (who directed and co-wrote two of the films) from 1985 to 1992, the trilogy follows lead character Chan Ka-Kui, a local cop tasked with assisting in a major undercover sting operation. The franchise was actually rebooted twice with Chan's direct involvement, most notably in 2004 with "New Police Story." That film also starred Chan in the lead role and paired him with immensely popular popstar and actor Nicholas Tse. Now, the two are teaming up once again to deliver a follow-up to that film with "New Police Story 2."

In February 2023, Netflix will remove a bunch of movie and TV series from its library,
Netflix UK and Netflix US takes down numerous titles each month without fanfare, meaning that many things on your watchlist could suddenly disappear.
These removals are due to licencing deals coming to an end. Often, the titles make their way back to Netflix in the following year, but sometimes they leave to go to other platforms.
This month sees a selection of Netflix Originals being taken down, also.
To minimise surprise, we have put together a comprehensive list of everything being removed in both Netflix UK and US.

Jackie Chan has been in the entertainment business his entire life. His 1978 film "Snake in the Eagle's Shadow" forever cemented his name as an action star — this was an actor who performed his own stunts no matter how many bones he broke. Jackie Chan is a household name, not just in East Asia but all over the world.
Chan's contribution to the slapstick kung-fu comedy style of films has made him so popular it's impossible to meet someone who doesn't know his name. He's one of the biggest action stars in the world — and even with all the critical acclaim and existing love for his work, the "Drunken Master" star still believed that he needed to do more to continue working and being memorable in the film industry.

And when we have almost all that we may want, but are still not content, what can be done?
One recourse for the latter would be to turn inward to religion or philosophy — but all of the first and a lot of the second are based on some variety of divine design and control over humans, maybe for their benefit — "the universe conspiring to help you attain something you want," as Paulo Coelho says in ‘The Alchemist’. But, we may also find that the universe could be hostile, or worse, absolutely indifferent.
At such a time, it may be useful to retrace the thought of a charismatic French philosopher with movie star looks (he bore an uncanny resemblance to Hollywood star Humphrey Bogart) — the man who identified the "absurd" existence we find ourselves in, or rather, told us clearly that our life is a meaningless struggle and what we can do about it.

Lionsgate has hired Nasim Cambron as executive vice president of worldwide publicity. The decision was announced Friday by Jp Richards and Keri Moore, president and co-president of marketing for the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group.
In her role, Cambron will report to Moore, supervising film public relations for the company.
“Nasim brings vast expertise and noted publicity success in every kind of film, from tentpole titles to genre pictures to award contenders; with each, we have been impressed with her bold, innovative campaigns that reach each film’s core audience as well as diverse and underserved communities,” Richard and Moore said in a joint statement. “We know filmmakers are equally confident in her ability to create smart messaging that drives box office. The respect that she’s earned from press and her industry peers make her an inspiring and thoughtful department leader, communicator and strategist who will embrace the work and hit the ground running.

By and large, modern superhero cinema is unsurprisingly IP-driven. Marvel and DC superheroes come with built-in fan bases both recent and long-standing — ones comprised of multiple demographics — and appeal to families and solo viewers alike. As Robert Downey Jr.'s essential turn as Tony Stark proved, though, the casts of these films matter. As we previously covered, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has added Harrison Ford to its roster, and DC has endured its share of star turns and casting woes. In "Black Adam," the Warner Bros. tentpole has Dwayne Johnson, who promises to change the hierarchy of the DC Extended Universe forever and, potentially, the company's box-office fortunes (though our "Black Adam" review may disagree).
Johnson is one of the few actors who can open a non-superhero blockbuster. With "Black Adam," he is testing his mettle in modern Hollywood's most tried-and-true genre. Thrillingly, in "Black Adam" Johnson is surrounded by...

Rita Gardner, an original cast member of the long-running Off Broadway phenomenon The Fantasticks, died Saturday of leukemia at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York. She was 87.
Gardner’s death was announced by her friend and colleague Alex Rybeck on Facebook.
In 1960, Gardner, who had recently appeared Off Broadway in the Jerry Herman musical review Nightcap, was cast in what would be her signature role: Luisa, or “The Girl,” in the Harvey Schmidt-Tom Jones musical The Fantasticks. The return of Martin Campbell, the Brit director who successfully rebooted the James Bond franchise not once but twice, on opposite sides of the millennium and gave English-language audiences Antonio Banderas as the title character in The Mark of Zorro, counts as something to both welcome and/or celebrate. That's especially true after a prolonged absence from the kind of stylish, slick entertainments (2011's headache-inducing Green Lantern misfire notwithstanding) that made Campbell one of Hollywood's go-to directors for more than a decade. After two middling, modestly budgeted, ultimately disposable efforts, and now a third, underwhelming film in a row, Memory, a remake of a little-known, barely remembered 2003 Belgian crime-thriller, The Memory of a Killer (aka The Alzheimer Case),...

Martin Campbell shoots straight as a filmmaker and a talker. He knows what he likes and what he doesn't like. For one, he's not a fan of this day and age of largely computer-generated action. The filmmaker is old-school and continues to rely on real stunts to tell his stories, including his latest film, "Memory." It's a nasty revenge movie that's more in line with his dark thrillers, such as "Criminal Law" and "The Foreigner," than his big blockbusters like "Casino Royale."
Campbell's latest is one of the few remakes in his career. It's based on the Dutch film, "The Memory of a Killer." He stuck...

With winter storms still sweeping through the land, it might be nice to stay in and watch some movies on your streamer of choice. While Netflix is increasingly interested in its own original films, they are still committed to bringing you plenty of classic catalogue titles, including a whole bunch in February. It was hard to pick our favorites, but we tried anyway.
Below are the best new movies on Netflix in February 2022.
The Addams Family Paramount Pictures
There’s been so much “Addams Family”-related stuff since the two original theatrical films in the 1990s that it’s easy to forget just how good they both were. The first film, directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and co-written by Burton collaborators Larry Wilson and Caroline Thompson (and later re-written by Paul Rudnick), doesn’t have quite the same edge as the sequel but it did establish the world beautifully. Any filmmaker who has hits like "The Mask of Zorro," "Goldeneye," or "Casino Royale" under their belt is a filmmaker who knows their way around action. It's as simple as that. For Martin Campbell, this year's release of "The Protégé" (along with 2017's Jackie Chan-starring "The Foreigner") marked a grand return to the genre that seems to come as naturally to him as breathing. The U.K.-based, New Zealand director hasn't been shy about sounding off on his thoughts on the current action landscape or giving viewers a peek behind the scenes on the process of making a movie like "The Protégé."

Action star Jackie Chan and director Martin Campbell were a fine match. In The Foreigner, Campbell’s eye for clarity and Chan’s physical prowess resulted in top-notch action. Not only were the set pieces crystal clear yet dirty, they were dramatic. The revenge story, in which Chan’s character loses his daughter in a terrorist attack and […]

Martin Campbell has seen the last three decades of action filmmaking — and helped shape much of it too. From James Bond flicks like Goldeneye and Casino Royale, to the beloved ’90s swashbuckler The Mask of Zorro, to superhero flicks like Green Lantern, and grimy revenge thrillers like The Foreigner, Campbell has had his hands deep in the action genre. At first glance, “The Stranger by the Shore” sounds seductive. This anime adaptation of Kanna Kii’s “L’étranger” Bl manga series promises visually stunning imagery: the character designs are reminiscent of Yoshitake Oima’s “A Silent Voice,” and the animation too sounds promising under the direction of Ghibli-support Studio Hibari. Beauty is only skin-deep, however. As gorgeous as the film is, the anime movie is simply boring – and for all the wrong reasons.
“The Stranger by the Shore” revolves around the blossoming romance between two teenage boys on a remote Japanese island. Shun Hashimoto aspires to be a novelist. In the meantime, however, he works at a hospice for local tourists. When he’s not writing or working, he watches over his next-door neighbor Mio. Shun fusses over him constantly; he sneaks him snacks from the hospice, invites him to dinner, and goes out of his way to greet him on their walk to school.

"We all have to pay for our sins eventually." What’s director Martin Campbell been up to since revitalizing the Bond franchise in 2006’s “Casino Royale.” Well, arguably just never really living up to that promise. Films like “Edge of Darkness” (2010) and “Green Lantern” (2011) floundered, and “The Foreigner“ (2017) was totally forgotten. Well, the director is still at it with what looks like a no-nonsense assassin thriller about killers who cannot outrun their past sins, “The Protégé.” The movie stars Michael Keaton, Maggie Q, and Samuel L.

Katie Leung was just 16 when she joined the cast of Harry Potter, and almost immediately faced hate for portraying Harry's love interest Cho Chang. During her March 8 appearance on the Chinese Chippy Girl podcast, Leung discussed how she was advised to deny experiencing any racism in connection with the role of Cho. "I was, like, googling myself at one point, and I was on this website, which was kind of dedicated to the kind of Harry Potter fandom," she stated. "I remember reading all the comments. And yeah, it was a lot of racist sh*t. Somebody had actually created a website, a hate site. It was like, if you disagree with this casting, click on this button, and it was like a count of who disagreed with the casting. It's so awful."
Leung felt woefully unprepared to address these issues and even spoke to publicists about media training. "I remember them saying to me,...
