If Slamma Jamma isn’t the worst movie ever made about basketball, then it’s because some of the actual hoops footage is decent, provided you ignore the fact that the crew and equipment can be seen in about a quarter of the shots. Otherwise, this is close to the nadir of faux-inspirational filmmaking—the story of an ex-con and former USC basketball star who returns home to win back his girl and make the final round of an international dunking competition, directed by the evangelical schlockmeister Timothy A. Chey (The Genius Club, Suing The Devil) in a style that is part student film, part 1940s cheapie. Its impossibly conflict-free hero, Michael Diggs, is played by Chris Staples, a former Harlem Globetrotter with zero acting ability and the vacuum-like presence of Being There’s Chauncey Gardiner. The most interesting thing about Staples is that he has his own name tattooed...

Aiming for some theoretical sweet spot between comedy, courtroom drama and Up-with-Jesus! sermonizing, this poorly sketched and dreadfully acted movie can’t even be saved via an attempted personality transfusion from a ranting, raving Malcolm McDowell, in the title role. Still wrapped up in grief over losing his mother to a drunk driver, a down-and-out Sydney law school student, Luke O’Brien (Bart Bronson), decides to file a suit [ Read More ]...

The spirit of Tommy Wiseau is alive and well in the new, Malcolm McDowell-produced faith-centric indie “Suing The Devil." There’s no way to sugarcoat the fact that McDowell, who stars as the titular Beelzebub, has over the course of his storied career, gone from working with Stanley Kubrick and Lindsay Anderson to slumming it in a low-rent Christian film that makes “Fireproof” look like “Dr. Zhivago.”
“Suing The Devil” concerns Australian law student Luke O’Brien (Bart Bronson), a long-haired rockstar-type and devout Christian having “the worst year of [his] life.” His mother was killed by a drunk driver, his wife is nursing a mysterious Movie Cough… gas prices are too high! To O’Brien, this is a sign that the world has gone wrong, and Satan is to blame. The only logical realization is that Satan needs to be sued. Specifically for eight trillion dollars, and yes he is serious,...
